Our Canadian LX Hatchbacks have always come with heated seats and Apple Carplay/ Android Auto. Also, a manual is available in all trim levels of the hatch. Honda Sensing is standard even on the base (LX manual) for 2019. I just started leasing one myself and I love it.
This looks alright. The blacked-out grille is much better than the chrome version on the sedan/coupe. The best looking Civic hatchback was back in 1992, when they used to call them "3-doors". I had a 2015 CR-Z and thought it was a nice interpretation of those 1990s hatchbacks, like a Civic met a Mazda MX-3.
My first car was a hand-me-down from my brother (1990 Civic Si), still the favorite car I've ever owned. All Si's were hatchbacks back in the good ol' days. I've since purchased 4 new cars, two hatches (Mazda Protege5, Subaru Impreza) and two coupes (Honda Civic, Subaru BRZ). Only the two Subaru's are still mine. I've never purchased a sedan. No adaptive cruise with manual? No deal, Honda. Even Toyota can do it. What's wrong with you Honda, Subaru, Mazda, and ...? Mazda case is the extra puzzling one because they offer the combination in other countries.
Well this version comes with a volume knob for the audio so that does make up for the lack of apple car play. A shame no leather interior as an extra option is available on this version...
Great Review Tom. I like this Civic hatch a bunch but rear visibility is not the best even with a camera. Not sure why the are not offering blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert on this model.
Would be more handsome, &even more functional, if they'd made it a fully squared off wagon. The coupe should have the hatch. This 4dr looks nose heavy... That said; just styling, iv never heard of anyone being disapionted after choosing a brand new Honda product. Civic continues to be a very practical, sensible car.
Looking good with thr new haircut Tom! Hoping you'll be able to review the upcoming Si and Type-R as well. Moreover, hope that the NYT will have an access and lend you the upcoming 2018 Ford Mustang . You've reviewed its competitors, the Camaro and Challenger; its been years since your last one and that was the 2011 Mustang V6 convertible.
I will tell Fred you like the cut. He kind of insisted on it. Ford is terrible with press cars in the Northwest where I live. I have asked five times for the Lincoln Continental and still have not heard back from them. So, nothing I can do there...
Driven Car Reviews Fully understood Tom. Some manufacturers don't maintain high fleet levels during awful weather cause they don't want their ride to screw up but the thing is that's what most consumers would like to know and see if their vehicle can hold up to the test. Appreciate it Tom for the prompt reply. Keep it up!
how does it feel in the rain, seems you were in a humid area but not sure if it had rained before, its important since im at Seattle where it rains 8 days from 7
Well, I also live in Seattle and the Civic was fine (it was raining lightly when we shot the running footage). The big difference will of course be the tires. Most buyers overlook that.
FINALLY, somebody does an intelligent review of the base model hatchback. I see a lot I like about that car...but the blacked out areas on the corners of the back bumper are butt-ugly (pun intended). If only they'd tone down the styling a bit, it would be a very compelling choice!
The styling details are not the problem for me. Front grill, tail-lights, those on their own, I rather like, actually. But the proportions of the hatchback just seem a bit off... In an age where automotive design already seeks to push the c-pillar on sedans as far back towards the rear end as possible, there already didn't seem like there was much left to chop off to make a hatchback. With 4 inches missing, the rear just feels truncated.
Hatches are supremely versatile (as are wagons), but if you are going to sell them in the USA, for the time being, they'd better off fantastic styling and sporty handling or someone will just choose a small SUV instead. Get a used Volvo S60 T5 fwd for $20K. It will be 2 1/2 years old and some of them have 5 year warranties, offered as a perk that summer. Faster, safer, handle well, supremely comfortable, and more solid. More luxurious as well. $28K for a Civic with leather and some safety features????? Or, if you want reliabilty most of all, get the Honda.
Is it comfortable to shift with such a short stick and raised center console? Does your arm sort of slides over or bumps into the console? The dash is from the 1980-ies Corvette, and the outside styling is from a transformer toy. Meh, not my cup of green tea.
The official volume of Civic hatch cargo (25 sq-ft) is way bigger than one of sedan's cargo (15.1 sq-ft). How come the hatch can swallow only 6 bags of TP compared to 7 for the sedan counterpart? anybody knows why?
Not sure why that number for the hatch is so much larger, it's some five inches shorter than the sedan if I remember correctly. And the TP doesn't lie.
It does. Although I'm in Canada. In Canada our normal "Sport" model comes fully loaded, minus the leather. In the USA you can't even get half the features standard unless you upgrade to the Sport Touring, but then you can't get a manual, but in Canada manuals are offered on the Touring model....I'm originally from the US and recently moved to Canada, and this makes no sense to me why they have better standard features.
Driven Car Reviews thanks for the reply. looking forward to the next video. also your channel is growing... almost at 50k. your gong to be a 1 million+ channel. I'm calling it.
Hey Tom I was between this and the GTI and I bought the civic hatch in a manual . I feel like I should have gotten the GTI but that was $4k more I got the sport hatch in a manual for $20,500 ! A steal ! I did see your GTI review and said shit did I buy the wrong car? Great videos Tom !
You know, I was behind a Sport hatch today and though "dang, that was a fun car, especially for the price". Agreed, they are giving that car away. Have fun with it!
4th Ave Costco !! That thing is gonna sell like hotcakes in the Seattle area . Honda dealers are gonna be laughing all the way to the bank with the adjusted market value .
Oddly, in Canada the Sport trim has all of those, and offers the Sensing package as well, and includes the Display Audio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It's much more upscale. But there's no EX trim. The next trim up is the Sport Touring (which is offered with a manual as well in Canada).
I don't love the styling, but I could deal with it. What I can't deal with is the real-world selling price. These go for several thousand dollars more than a lot of the competition, and they come poorly equipped at that--no variable intermittent wipers and a mediocre stereo system on this one, and the next trim up (the EX) doesn't even have a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Sadly Subaru and others have abandoned the performance hatchback/five door market. 150 HP is not performance in a car this size. I have enjoyed my 2006 WRX Sportwagon and pine for a new WRX five door. It is not made.
How much toilet paper do these guys use? They get at least 5 packs for every car they review. Perhaps they donate them to the local homeless shelter? Or perhaps they have an agreement with Costco to use them for demonstration purposes. Or perhaps these guys both have chronic severe diarrhea and a house full of teenage girls.
Personally I think the hatchback looks a lot better than the Civic sedan
agreed

One of these things passed me on I5 today and immediately got my attention.. nice to see the hatch...back.
i like the hatchback better only because it has a lot of trunk space....and i can sleep in it in case my wife locks me out

"...will tempt many to play '90s music." Hey, that's a good thing! '90s music is the best. :P
Great Review Tom. I like this Civic hatch a bunch but rear visibility is not the best even with a camera. Not sure why the are not offering blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert on this model.
man! excellent hear cut! and I like the civic but for practicality I go with the golf sport wagon that I have one and I LOVE IT!
Yep, it's a nice car and available in AWD.
Now we wait, for you to get your hands on the Type-R....
Tom Voelk reviews gets an automatic upvote.
The 6 speed has 177 lb-ft of tq. It's 162 for the CVT
A simple cu ft. number, along with the TP packs, would be useful when comparing vehicles.
Sorry, that's what you get from me. It's how I roll.
You can find that info anywhere on the internet. These videos offer a great real-world demonstration of what really fits.
I see what you did there, Tom. :P
I like this car. The Hatchback is so much fun
Love the Iroquoi haircut
This Civic Hatch is starting to grow on me. I dismissed it as a Crosstour that's 2/3rd size.
Would be more handsome, &even more functional, if they'd made it a fully squared off wagon.
The coupe should have the hatch. This 4dr looks nose heavy...

How is this compared to mazda3 hatch and impreza? Which would be most refined with the most tech and safety features?
Tech Defender you're looking at the exl or sport touring trim if you want more tech
finally slumming it Tom, thought you'd never drive a 5 figure car again, LOL!
The styling details are not the problem for me. Front grill, tail-lights, those on their own, I rather like, actually.

Any comment on the visibility (especially rearward and 3-quarters rearward)?
3/4 not bad. Rearward? Glad it has a backup cam.
Is it comfortable to shift with such a short stick and raised center console? Does your arm sort of slides over or bumps into the console?
The dash is from the 1980-ies Corvette, and the outside styling is from a transformer toy. Meh, not my cup of green tea.
It was not an issue for me Lead.
Thanks!
Would love to see an Elantra Sport review!
But... no variable intermittent wipers.
The front end is rather nice, but the cars rump gets too fussy for my liking.
I really like the design of both sedan and hatch and I'm not a Honda fan
Nice from the front, but not so from behind.
@Driven Car Reviews Agreed! I would not buy the hatch mainly because of the cargo space.
Elon Y. Kim Even if the trunk were slightly smaller the big hatch opening makes loading stuff a lot easier than the sedan.
I don't know why the sport is barebones. Low end audio, no proximity keys, no LCD instrument panel... For the price I don't get it.
I would immediately buy this if it had blind spot monitoring, it's a must for me
It does. Although I'm in Canada. In Canada our normal "Sport" model comes fully loaded, minus the leather. Do you have a neck injury?
you know what I really like Tom? the refreshed 3 hatch. edit: please review the 2017 Mazda 3 hatch
I'll be doing the new MX-5 RF and CX-5 first. Sorry, I'm just one guy.
Driven Car Reviews thanks for the reply. looking forward to the next video. also your channel is growing... almost at 50k. your gong to be a 1 million+ channel. I'm calling it.
it's a love or hate design
2017 hyundai elantra sport dct?
It's on the list but will be awhile.
I'm still subscribed to your channel. I enjoy your reviews and puns.

$20,500 plus tax and destination, right?
please review a juke nismo!
4th Ave Costco !! That thing is gonna sell like hotcakes in the Seattle area . Honda dealers are gonna be laughing all the way to the bank with the adjusted market value .
Honda stinged on the sport model. No sunroof, no proximity key, blank buttons, cmon Honda! No one should have to upgrade to the sport touring
Hey Tom, will we be hearing from your Evil Twin in any future videos or did he get fired?
He has been 86ed after that incident with the twins in a Ferrari on a frozen lake in Minnesota. Well, almost frozen...
Don't forget the new Subaru Impreza if you're looking at hatchbacks!
Yup. That should be in there. I'm starting to see the new ones and they don't look half bad.
Compared to the Civic the Impreza is a beauty queen.
So nice looking...very handsome..and the CAR ain't bad looking either!
Its a shame this doesnt have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.. If it did, it'd be perfect.
then honda puts it towards the end of the generations run d'oh honda
I don't love the styling, but I could deal with it. What I can't deal with is the real-world selling price. If Ford would put some adult sized seats in their Focus ST that would be the choice in a manual.
By adults do you mean fat people? :P
NORTH AMERICA HAS THE HATCH NOT JUST MERICA SMH
How is it possible for such an attractive vehicle. have such cheap features inside
Sadly Subaru and others have abandoned the performance hatchback/five door market. 150 HP is not performance in a car this size. I have enjoyed my 2006 WRX Sportwagon and pine for a new WRX five door. It is not made.
I definitely think the styling from the last gen was a lot easier on the eyes...
I wish they would ditch cvts
93Adamv23 I wish all companies would. Sucks the life out of most cars. Oh and that cvt drone....
sweet
The rear end of civic is just too much....
Toyota4Life it's really not they looked at the Germans to make their car!
Better than AFV
It's too bad they made these so ugly. Certainly looks better with black trim, though, as shown here in the Sport trim.
Way way over styled.I can deal with the front, the rear bumper has to go..
Rage red
Too bad it's hideous. You could get a more fun used car for the same price.
Not digging the style...much prefer the Elantra GT.
Midlife crisis hairstyle 😉
I wish my hair were still that thick.
Or maybe Fred just went ahead and cut it that way without asking me...
You rocked it though, I'm 31 and you have more hair than I do, lol

Yet another civic..ughhh
That is ugly!
