    I think that Inside Out is a good lesson on toxic positivity. Most don't like sadness cause she's, well, literally sadness and no one likes feeling this emotion. But Joy's insistence to be the dominant emotion, without balance, is what caused Riley to crumble down. Sometimes we gotta be sad and let out our emotions, to feel happy afterward.

      @@SB992REBORN Toxic positivity is a very real thing. Throughout the film, Riley’s parents ask her to remain happy- saying things like ‘Thank you, through all of this confusion you’ve stayed our happy girl. If you and I can keep smiling, it’ll be a big help’. Not the best thing to say - that shs needs to keep smiling otherwise it’ll add to the stress. We see that Riley must remain happy to support her family; despite the fact it should really be the family prioritising Riley. This is what causes all of her personality ‘islands’ to collapse, and ultimately causes her to feel no emotion at all, no matter how hard Fear, Anger and Disgust pull levers or push buttons. Joy is complicit in this as well since she didn't understand why sadness was important until the end of the movie. She thought that if Riley is smiling and 'happy' despite not really feeling it, everything will be fine. It is the same thing as telling a depressed person to think positive, smile, look on the bright sight. It is more complicated than that.

      I completely agree with this completely, but I want to point out that in a way they all carry out Reilly’s will. Just like Sadness loosing control is forced upon her by Riley feeling nostalgia, it can be theorized that joy and reiley are also of the same will(somewhat subconsciously?), and that possibly the desion to suppress Sadness was just as much Riley’s as it was Joy’s, so she could be their “happy little girl” for her parents.

    I don't know of you truly got it but my theory as to why sadness can turn a memory permanently like that is due to nostalgia and how looking back on past good memories amidst a stressful time can sadden you pretty much. So every good memory could feel bittersweet when looked back upon and that's why the core memories( the most important memories that shaped Riley), which are mostly happy ones, quickly turned sad.
    Edit: I forgot to mention that this is probably why sadness is also beckoned to touch the memories is because the memory "calls" for the emotion "sadness" automatically. Also explains why this id also happening just now.

    • @neolithiumproduction
      @neolithiumproduction 3 роки тому +12

      Not to mention, she needed to be able to let go of those core memories in order to heal and grow as a person. Notice at the end that her new core memories are all mixed emotions, because as we grow, emotions become more complex. No straight happy or sad memory. We can't be shaped forever by the same few memories from early childhood.

    It's very hard to look out of the picture when sadness is an actual character here, but if you start seeing it on a metaphorical level, Riley can't control her emotions
    So when Joy and Sadness left the headquarter, she couldn't feel them anymore
    Sadness isn't trying to sabotage Riley, she isn't in control of her actions

      Yeah I never understood people who said Riley was "controlled" by the emotions inside her head. No, she creates them and controls them. Life controls the emotions, that's why Sadness "infects" Riley's memories, because Riley is sad and events "provoked" that sadness within herself. Sadness and Joy and all of them aren't "sadness" and "joy", they're Riley. Joy pushing Sadness back, is Riley pushing her sadness back to try and be joyful like her parents asked her to be. All of these characters are voices of Riley's thoughts, nothing else.

      As someone that has experienced depression specifically because I was pushing myself to be happy and perfect for others around me, I was amazed at how well this movie shows it without saying anything out loud. I knew the moment Riley lost the ability to feel happy and sad and the console turned black and unresponsive that that was Depression. First, you lose the ability to feel happy or sad, and you're just left with disgust or anger or fear over the fact that you can't feel happy or sad anymore. And then you just stop feeling all together and push everyone away, because you don't understand and they don't understand and its so hard to explain why you just "can't be happy".
      This movie is great at teaching that sadness is ok and necessary, and being happy to the point of lying and sacrificing yourself is bad, but it also really did amazing at expressing what depression is like.

  • @serpentmaster1323
    @serpentmaster1323 3 роки тому +35

    This is the rare movie that has not a twist villain, but a twist hero. In the beginning the rush to get beck to headquarters is that without joy, she can’t be happy. What was far, far, more important was that she couldn’t be sad. Even before she got the idea to runaway stuck in her head, expressing any emotion other than sadness would not have helped, and while joy would have kept trying to find things to be happy about, the practical effect of that is just bottling up your feelings.
    I also feel like that of all the emotions, how sadness helps is the hardest to put into words. Joy says at the beginning, anger cares that things are fair, fear protects from danger, and disgust protects from physical and social poisoning (wich makes sense, but you kinda have to think about that one). Sadness can’t be explained as simply except in negative or semi negative terms, or terms our society has deemed negative for centuries. Showing weakness, being vulnerable, throwing a fit. In a way sadness is the emotion that shows us that live isn’t a zero-sum game. If it was, sadness would never have evolved, because the role of sadness in helping the sad person is showing others that they need help, showing other that they are in a state of weaknesses. Nobody wants to be weak, almost by definition so sadness is seen as bed. But the truth is we are social and as rotten as it can be, the society and connections of a person, especially in today’s world, can be their greatest strength.

      Another good way to look at it is...Sadness expresses when something is wrong. Sadness also equals empathy. We understand and care for other people when they are in pain, because we know what that pain feels like. A person who's always happy can't understand why someone isn't happy, and that's why Joy struggled hard to cheer up Bing Bong yet Sadness did so easily. It wasn't until Joy finally felt sad herself and cried that she was finally able to understand what Sadness does.

The flow from suppressing sadness (or putting sadness in a circle) and forcing yourself to being happy even though you’re not leading into a total emotional breakdown, and ultimately becoming so depressed that you can’t feel emotions is so on point. I love the little touches and details in this film, like how Joy's eyes and hair are blue, foreshadowing that sadness is related to her, or her dress pattern, which is little blue patterns surrounded by a green background, meaning Sadness disgusts her (or at the very least used to disgust her at the start of the film).

    There is a reason why Sadness is the smart one, happiness is a bit delusional at times. If something is bad, and you don't like it, being "happy" about it is lying to yourself. Sadness confront things a bit more honestly and well, does a bit more deep thinking. Sadness is by nature reflective and rhuminating.

    Sadness is as necessary as any emotion. It's what lets us heal, grow, change, and feel for others around us. And sooner or later, we grow emotionally to have memories and feelings that mix the different emotions. This movie is amazing in teaching this, and I love it so much. It even does an amazing job of showing an idea of what happens during depression, with the emotion console completely shutting down.

    You can't selectively numb emotions. Either you feel all of them: joy, sadness, anger, fear and disgust, or none of them. That is what people mean by toxic positivity. It isn't healthy or realistic to expect anyone to only have positive emotions at all times. The more we try to avoid all the negative emotions the less we are able to access the positive ones.

    It took me a while to fully comprehend how deep this movie was. Like, imagine if we were just watching this without the emotion characters. It would be a completely realistic depiction of a little girl trying to cope with moving to a new place. If you ignore your sadness, you just get more and more angry. Being sad is completely healthy and we have to acknowledge it.

    This movie is the best portrayal I've ever seen of depression, because joy is gone from headquarters, but so is sadness. You arent sad all the time you're kind of just empty.
    Anyway a part of the movie that didnt really stick out at first is that I'd argue the emotions arent necessarily making Riley feel a certain way, they are making her react a certain way. If they are in headquarters then the emotion is already in there then she's already feeling them in situations where they trigger an action. It also explains why sadness was compelled to go around and touch things at the beginning of the movie - Reiley was already sad - the move and the drive and everything, but Joy wasn't letting her experience it until Sadness started changing all the memories to sadness, because that was in there and she was bottling it up. She wasnt experiencing or processing things as something other than positive happy experiences even if they weren't.

    ItsTotally Cody! you seem to be wondering why bing bong jumped out of his rocket at 20:22 in this video, it’s because bing bong knew Riley was running away back to midisoda and joy really needed to get back to headquarters as quick as she could so she can make her happy again, and bing bong also remembered that the less people there is on his rocket the longer his rocket can fly for, So bing bong decided to give his life away just to get joy out of the dump so she can save Riley and make her happy again

    Oh I think you didn't notice but sadness taking happy memories makes them nostalgic. They're still happy but you still get sad when you think about it, aka nostalgia.
    Also notice how Joy tries to forces herself onto Bing Bong? It does nothing. But sadness listened to him and he felt better. That's because you need sadness to feel empathy.

  • @Lexi_Zone
    @Lexi_Zone 3 роки тому +2

    The whole movie is very metaphorical, isn't it? They (Joy especially) spend most of the movie trying to keep Sadness from doing anything, just as most of us try to push sadness away when it enters our own lives. But it's a valid emotion, and the movie does a good job of showing _why_ Riley would be sad with everything that was going on in her life. If you suppress sadness and try to force joy when things aren't right, it'll catch up with you eventually.
    Emotions are like the weather. You can't tell them what to do, but you can make the most of them.

    The ending of this one always gets to me. The unconditional love that's there throughout the scene when Riley finally gets to break down and be vulnerable with her parents and that they validate her feelings is something that needs to be shown more often and it makes me think of my relationship with my own parents and the times we've gone through similar experiences. I'm also so happy that they flipped the usual dichotomy of sad = bad and joy = good, since they really hammer home that you need both for balance, and people won't be able to help you unless you share what's making you sad and forcing happiness into every situation can become toxic and unhealthy (I really recommend Cinema Therapy's video on that). Truly one of Pixar's best!

    Interesting fact - There are actually 7 emotions, but the writers reduced it to 5 kind of blending in the other 2 with the 5 they gave us.
    The other two are:
    Surprise - Which was blended in a bit with Fear
    and
    Contempt - Which was blended in with Disgust.
    I saw this on a behind the scenes of the creation of the movie.
