I wouldn't say the movie is about faith, it's more about love. Love for our family, love for our children, love for all mankind. And how we should reach outside ourselves in the name of love to help all of us prosper. Love unconditionally, uncontrollably.

    • @MrBreezeLI516

And yet also how love IS conditional, and in fact, controlled easily, under the " right " circumstances and with the " right " variables in play. This is called the absence of faith; supplanted by the all-consuming SELF bound by the present. 💬

Brand was right about Edmund's planet but only by accident, not because love was telling her in any real capacity. Her argument about love was wrong foundationally; love is not like gravity that it has a direct causal relationship with another universe. The love we take with us is that guiding emotional energy which does give us the ability to try one last push before death, a self triggering mechanism for a last ditch attempt at survival. Love is what allowed Cooper to navigate infinite time to find the right moments to give Murph the data she needed.

I'm very sorry to hear about your father. I can see why this film affected you the way it did.
I travel all over the US for work, and my wife and daughter are home during that time. My schedule is typically 3 weeks on, one week off. This movie always hits me hard thinking about every time I have to leave home again to fulfill my responsibilities. The only reason I still keep to it after 5 years is because I get way better quality time at home during that week off every month than I would working local in my trade. I'd literally have to work about 70 hours a week to make the money I do on the road, wouldn't have weekends, and I'd only get two weeks off a year at most with exception of a few national holidays. I also have never been turned down for a time off request in 5 years because my superiors worked their way up from field technician positions themselves and know how it is. 12 weeks off a year is hard to beat.
All that said, it still sucks to leave home every month, and I miss them like crazy while I'm gone.
I don't know how long it's been since your father passed. But he must've been a great dad for you to still miss him the way you do for a movie like this to get you that emotional from your memories of him. And my heart goes out to you for your loss.
I wrote a poem for a friend of mine who lost a loved one last year and still have it saved in my phone. I would like to send it to you if you would like to read it and have a way for me to send it. It's not depressing, but meant to be an encouragement.

My condolences to you on your father passing, that’s always rough.
I am glad though that you’ve boiled down the essence of the movie into simple sentence: “a father coming back to his kid”.
It was love that Cooper used to find the specific points in the 5th dimensional tesseract to send himself the message, it was love that Murphy felt the moment she didn’t have evidence but just knew it was her dad in the bookshelf, and it was also love that told Murphy that her father was coming back to her one way or another so she put herself into cryo.

Thank you for a powerful reaction. I'm very sorry about your father. This movie is very much about a father / daughter relation and when it came out my daughter was 10, around Murph's age, and now she is 19.
You asked about how the humans who left earth dealt with water supplies. The equation Doctor Brand and older Murph were working on had to do with understanding and controlling gravity, so they could lift all those stations off the earth. So they could probably lift water and equipment. Also there's plenty of ice in the solar system, especially around Saturn, so they could probably bring equipment to process that ice into water and then start recycling it.
You should consider watching Contact, which shares a lot with this movie. It features a strong Father/Daughter relationship, a strong very smart female leading character, pays close attention to scientific accuracy, and even includes Matthew McConaughey as a costar!

    1:25 "That's true"
Is it? Love is the one thing that can transend dimensions of time and space? I didn't really get what Brand meant. What about other emotions like hate? Does hate transend dimensions of time and space? How does love transend time and space anyway? Brand loves Edmund but her love exists inside time and space. To me what she says seems to be nonsense. Yet later Cooper says Brand was right. 🤷

I’ve always taken it to be metaphorical. I mean, yes internally to the movie/as a character she seems to mean it more directly but it’s there in the film to examine the themes of importance of human connection. It’s not really any more nonsense than being able to survive inside a black hole, they’re both there to tell a story bring up concepts Nolan likes to explore.
