I watch the pod race and Darth Maul vs Qui Gon and Obi Wan all the time. Never gets old. I remember being almost shocked by the trailers back in 99 by how different it looked from the original trilogy but I love how Lucas always had a bigger vision of the universe.
The thing with Qui Gon is the Jedi at that point were super authoritarians and too far to the light side. They were blinded by their dogma, stuck in their bubble and had no idea what was forming with the dark side. Qui Gon rebelled against the dogma and without him dabbling with the dark side, the Jedi would have never discovered being one with the force. Once the Empire came to power, things were swung too far to the dark side. Luke brought balance. It's almost like there's a political and life lesson there. The Yin and the Yang.
Qui Gon DID try to free Anakin's mother, but Wotto wouldn't have it.

George actually didn't want to direct this movie. He tried to get several directors such as Robert zemeckis and Steven Spielberg amd Ron Howard to direct but they all told him he should do it.
It's funny that you mention the Jaws shark. Apparently that same constraint helped Ridley Scott make Alien so scary; he thought the Alien was good, but only if you couldn't see it was a guy in a suit, so he mostly hid the body of the creature through the whole film until the very end.
I always thought it was implied that Qui-Gon knew Padme was the Queen when on Tatooine. He was trolling her with some of his comments, ie, "The Queen doesn't have to know".
Also, I think you mistake over-confidence with ambition. Creating the first fully CGI character was ambitious and could not have been done with your "blended" approach.

Shout out to Ahmed Best, and every other Star Wars actor that fans eviscerated for no reason. It’s gotta be tough for him, when him and Andy Serkis are both the pioneers for Motion Capture animation, and Serkis is beloved by all, and Ahmed Best suffered depression after this movie
I like Star Wars in general and the prequel trilogy as a whole, but the things Ahmed Best and especially Jake Lloyd went through after Phantom Menace were dark as all hell.
I actually met Ahmed about 5-6 yrs ago via his wife Rocky who’s one of my web design clients and ended up designing his website. Very nice and intelligent guy who was in good spirits and vibes.
When I saw this at the midnight premiere, I felt like I was on ecstasy, as the movie was starting. By the end, I felt like I was on thorazine. 15 years to write this story. Most people could've written a better screenplay with 15 years. You are totally right about Qui Gon, he's a f**ker, and so is Obi Wan in this movie, the only thing they have in common is Lightsabers and manipulating people. The best thing was Darth Maul, being a Ninja/wild animal, who was less talk, all business! And of course, they kill him off at the end. What a waste of money😂 At least we'll always have Empire Strikes Back, and nobody can take that away from us, unless, god forbid, they remake it😮
Not sure Lucas would feel flattered to hear his work described as an 'enormity'.

I saw this film opening morning. And the thing I remember most about that iconic day is being in the crowded theater line with 2 child-friends ... and suddenly seeing the guy from the Got Milk/Aaron Burr commercials of the time. He had a big smile on his face too. Almost like he knew I was playing his commercial in my mind ---
"Who shot Alexander Hamilton?"

The fart was the best part.
You're so right that George Lucas did a great job setting up the stakes and mapping out the beats for the pod race. As a result, the pod race sequence has epicness, clarity, humor, and suspense, building to a tremendously satisfying conclusion. Disney Star Wars gave their action sequences little to no setup (J.J. Abram's frenetic pacing is partly to blame). As a result, none approach the imagination and impact of Lucas's pod race.
Thank you for your insight. George Lucas knew what he was doing in 1977, in 99 he just had luck with a great creative team that exercised their creative muscles for very little that Lucas gave. He's stil the creative force and the parent of this franchise.

Do you know the odd number episodes are subtitles of the dark side and the even numbered episodes have subtitles of the good side? Each episode has the characters in the opposite order of when they appear and what they're going through. Anakin arrives at 32 minutes of an indoor location in Episode I because Luke arrives at 16 minutes of an outdoor location in Episode IV. There are many other layers throughout the series.
Jabba the Hut was in the directors cut of New Hope so he can arrive in Episode 1 and the creatures in the bleachers of the pod race are mostly the ones in the bars Obi-Wan and Luke go to in Episode 4. Darth Maul's death reverses Obi-Wan since he was killed by Darth Vader. I watched Episode 4 and realized I was right all along and the opening scene in Episode 1 reverses Episode 4. This is why Obi-Wan appears early in Episode 1 because he was late in 4. Vice versa with C-3PO.
The opening of Episode 4 starts with Storm Troopers blasting characters with guns leading to an explosion of black smoke in which the smoke contrasts the white interior of the spaceship and Darth Vader emerges from the smoke. C-3PO appears in the scene. Leia gives a message for help to Obi-Wan. Later, C-3PO and R2-D2 leave the spaceship. Episode 1 opens with four characters approaching the spaceship (including Obi-Wan) where a female version of C-3PO greets them. An explosion occurs where white smoke from another room emerges contrasting the dark interiors of the spaceship. The Jedi's emerge from the smoke and do battle with robots. Queen Amidala gives a message for help.
Then I watch Episode 5 to see if Lucas did this all along in the first trilogy and he did. The opening of Episode 5 takes place on planet Hoth instead of Darth Vader's spaceship. That's why I knew Han Solo would arrive early in 7 because he arrived early in 5, but late in 4 and 6. Notice we hear his voice before seeing his face in 5 and 7 which I predicted would happen before seeing Force Awakens. Obi-Wan appears early in Episode 5 and tells Luke to see Yoda instead of Leia needing to see Obi-Wan in the start of Episode 4. Yoda is a reverse of Obi-Wan since he's also a mentor to Luke, but Yoda's short, non-human and talks backwards. Obi-Wan is tall, human and talks forwards. The final lightsaber duel in Episode 5 is a stalemate since it's the middle of the trilogy. The end of 5 is inside a spaceship with the characters backs turned to the audience in tragedy. Episodes 4 and 6 open on Darth Vader's spaceship and ends on a planet in joy where the characters are facing the audience. I discovered all these character reversals on my own and there's many more.

The problem with Jar-Jar is that he's formula for the sake of formula, a very calculated effort toward comic relief. The humor in the original trilogy arose organically from the characters...at least until Threepio's turn in Jedi, which anticipated Jar-Jar. With the prequels, rather than organic humor risng from the material, Lucas imposed it on the story per recipe for epic storytelling...and with no sense of genuine humor. It feels intrusive because it _is_ intrusive. Naturally it fell flat and turned grating. That's not even touching the Steppin Fetchit factor.
I do still like a lot of aspects of the PT, but...yeah.
I wish they would've kept the big twist that he was actually a Sith all along. he would've been a reverse Yoda, and all of the "forced humour" would've suddenly made more sense: this isn't a genuinely funny gungan, this is a malicious creature trying his best to play dumb

The film as WHOLE is suppose to feel quirky and innocent before things get crazier so I would say Jar-Jar flows well with the world building and shouldn't be taken seriously as a separate plot device.

When I saw the behind-the-scenes making of The Fellowhip Of The RIng, I was so happy with all the practical effects and thought "This guy gets it." But then, years later, Peter Jackson goes full Lucas and CGI's the crap out of The Hobbit, and it shows.
I loved CGI in its infancy, but it has been utilized beyond literal belief.
Do you think Lucas surrounds himself with yes-men or that the talented people around him trust his vision (and with good reason)?
In fairness to Lucas, nobody wanted to direct Episode 1. I know he approached his friends Ron Howard and Bob Zemeckis to direct, but they turned it down knowing the expectations would be crazy.
The one thing that Lucas does (and you admitted the movie shaped you as a kid) is he brings in new generations of fans. The older fans who grew up from 1977-83 didn’t see that in 1999 and were expecting the movies to be made for 25+ year old adults now. That’s not what Lucas does, rightly or wrongly.
You say you watched the movie 60-70 times as a kid. We’ll, Lucas did his job (from his point of view) because you were the target audience in 1999.
If Lucas directed 7,8,9 instead of selling to Disney he would have made those movies for GenZ. The irony would have been that the Prequel Millenials would have probably had the same gripes as the GenX kids in 1999. Those you don’t follow history are doomed to repeat it.

Being 12 when it hit cinemas. I liked it a lot. Not till I was bit older did the gaping cracks appear. It's funny how like you say here it does have redeeming qualities but it's Dragged down most by the wooden dialogue.

Star Wars The Phantom Menace(1999) has Ray Park as Darth Maul. He was more than a match for Qui Gon and Obi Wan Kenobi. The music score by John Williams was really good.

The "yes men" argument is fine within itself but it's pretty clear that Lucas knew of his faults. He was more used to being called clumsy than genius. He directed it because his director friends didn't want to.
Its funny looking back at the prequels I thought that would be it for anymore star wars movies.

The whole galactic politics thing was perhaps too big of thing to wrap up in thee movies alongside with whole Jedi/Sith thing and as well having focus on the story where Anakin is slowly turning to dark side and also giving some screentime to build the story for up-coming Luke and Leia. That's also what I find is the biggest issue with sequel movies. There's just too much different things going on. I can imagine how difficult it's actually to write a proper script where you convey say rebels/empire and light/dark side thing and also all possible individual relations between characters and then wrap up everything in 2h screen time.
Look forward to the attack of the clones review. Nostalgic favourite for me, detective Kenobi, Jango fett and Natalie Portman in a black corset
I really liked your take on the dialogue here. I remember when this came out everyone was complaining about how hokey the dialogue was - but to me, that's Star Wars! I love the original films, but they were filled with silly dialogue and cheesy acting. So, in that way, the prequels still feel like Star Wars to me.
I was 10 when Phantom Menace was released, so I felt like I was growing up with Anakin as each prequel movie came out. I like the overload of information as that's kind of my thing.
Qui Gon Gin. He's always drinking the gin, that's how you understand his character and everything he does in the film.

Midichlorians (the concept of) ruined Gen Xers like me who thought the force was accessible to everyone. Ironically, The Last Jedi brought a bit of that idea back despite not being very good
I never felt the prequel story needed to be told. Vader was a better character when his history was shrouded in mystery. There was never going to be a prequel story told that lives up to expectations. I wish we had gotten a sequel trilogy instead of the prequels.

I think a big difference in folks opinions of the prequals comes from what kind of fans they are. You have film fans who love the original star wars because they are decent films, acting, script, cinematography, music, mood, in camera effects etc You have sci Fi fans who perhaps love starwars for other reasons, story, characters, world building, lore, spaceships, aliens, etching etc. Obviously too simplistic but. But the prequals give me very little about what I love about films. I presume that All 9 SW films apeal to a sci Fi fan, who is looking at completely different elements to me.

I'll say, that I really like the second trilogy, I don't really understand why people hate it so much, the second trilogy adds more complex plots, and yes, it set referential frames for the SW universe, so I really appreciate the explanations, but I usually like a lot movies or stories that take time to set the universe framework properly.
Maybe people don't like it because they look terrible and are less concerned with story and more concerned with boring lore?

Or that absolute masterpiece that was American Graffiti. He was indeed one of the most admired and revered film students in film school, no wonder Coppola and him hit it off very quickly. But people apparently really think that he somehow managed to direct three or four masterpieces in spite of being the director, not because of it. "He is an ideas man, not a director..." Ah... BULLSHIT.

I found Phantom Menace to be an odd mix of being sometimes TOO adult and complicated in some ways, and TOO childish in others. The balances were all wrong. And the imbalance made it all a bit.....boring.

Yes, I agree with you about the overconfidence of the director. From the very beginning - the opening script we are presented with the blandness of the ‘taxation of trade routes’ cos George thought the kid’s would appreciate some dreary dry business accounting references.
Jar Jar Binks was such a colossal waste of space, an idiotic boring background character who outrageously attempts to steal the limelight.
The Podracer section was so so dumb; as if Qui Gon and co would allow a young child to ride one of those death traps. Surely they would sought a far far better alternative to winning the child’s freedom. Frustratingly he ends up flying a space fighter during intensive dogfights?!?! ‘Weeeeeeeee’ *facepalm*
Agree too - the dialogue is horrific..I’m still trying to process the magisterial muggle headed nonsense of ‘midichlorians’. Why do the aliens have to sound like they of kindergarten age…the Otagungens from the watery world & also the unimaginative pseudo Japanesy Trade Federation aliens.
I always felt that Qui Gon was a supernumerary character. Lucas should have combined Qui Gon and Obi Wan. This would have given Obi Wan personal responsibility for Anakin's rise towards the darkness. Wjy not have Obi Wan take on Anakin as a padawan against the wishes of the Jedi council?
I recommend strongly the Lucas audio comment tracks from the DVD's. You can find them here on youtube, it will give a better understanding on his perspective as a director. I love him too, he's not a great filmmaker, but a great visionary.

I think that was the entire point. we only knew the Jedi in the original films as this mysterious group of space wizards who were supposedly a force of good in the galaxy. and then the prequels shows us that they fell for a reason, even if they had great potential. it would've been excellent if the sequels focused on Luke building a new Jedi Order from scratch, learning from the mistakes of old while infusing it with a new purpose. from what I understand, that was the plan before the IP was sold to Disney

@@jonathannoble9465 well, let's just assume that there MIGHT be some amount of truth to the Kubrick-Moon Landings thing... well, I've been having a bit of skepticism about the Voyager project...The Probes. The timing is just SO perfect. All major gas giants allegedly just happen to line up just as the Apollo program is winding down. Man those planets in Star Wars look SO realistical maaaan. hhahahahah. I'm only partially joking. That wouldn't be the only reason, to give legitimacy to the photos being constructed from images beamed across millions of miles. I'm just skeptical of the ability for this to be done especially over these distances. Like HOW STRONG would that signal have to be? also the amount of corrective burns to slingshot the Voyager properly to hit each gas giant is just a bit TOO intrepid. Even with ultra mega geniuses working at NASA... If you see the alignment about to happen in a few years which is what they claim, you also have to allow for the travel time in between Saturn and Uranus for example. and then how much power would it take to transmit these photos through space??? But Star Wars is very elaborate and kinda realistical hahahha. Sure there aren't space lasers and Death Stars but gee these Voyager Rovers see SO plausible.... Moons of Tattooine. Feel free to convince me that Voyager program and all Nasa stuff is 100% legit. oh and I'm certainly not some kind of flat earth moron... that's just idiotical hheheheh... Earth being flat is for me closer to believing the Voyager stuff. I seem to remember some documentary saying that the probe went around Jupiter several times which would take away the benefit of a slingshot tactic using the gravity. which I would think would require quite a bit of fuel...to 'burn'. Plus in general I don't at all get a low-budget vibe from Star Wars...Those sets probably cost a shit ton to build. All of it. Kurbrick probably had help from Government agencies for 2001 and it would seem reasonable to surmise a similar collusion with Lucas to make Star Wars what it was... but honestly, I don't even know what the official budget for either of these films is...just my gut feeling.. I could CERTAINLY be completely wrong... I only had this idea about 2 months ago when I was going through many of the Star Wars films and Voyager documentaries around the same time

I m not sure about the wooden dialogue, the stuffy and the goofy aspect of the movie. But yes, in 1999,when it was released, the film already looked pretty dated : and that was mainly due to "Matrix" who s now considered as the Star Wars of the 90 s.
Yet u miss several points. U don t emphasize how ambitious is the storyline. A political plot and a trade agreement that actually will unfold over the whole prequel trilogy: can t we just thank Lucas to respect his audience intelligence?
About the fan service, sorry but it might be the most irritating trait of this movie. It constantly refers to the original trilogy at a point that it shrink the whole SW universe.
About tve Darth Maul combat: it was NOT filmed by Lucas. So its success maybe.

I still feel bad for those who paid to see this such anticipation in 1999. I believed I shared that pain with the final season of Game of Thrones.
My cousin and I walked out of the theater in shock over how bad it was. To this day I still wonder if this movie was a joke from Lucas

I agree so much with you. Alot of what you said about this movie can be said about the whole trilogy and especially the point about it feeling like star wars, something that I missed in the sequels. It is trying something new and yes, the execution was sometimes pretty bad, but it is keeping the mythos alive. The podracing scene or the beginning of the fight against Maul, when duel of the faiths starts playing, they stay in mind.
Overall it is a great concept, with great talents working on it, but it could have used some revision and some pushback against George Lucas' ideas.

I was 9 years old as well when this film was in theaters. I remember it was my friends birthday, we all got together, ate at Godfathers Pizza, and went and watched this afterwards. I still like the film today, I think it holds up fine.
For the hype the movie was a big disappointment! One of the all time let downs! The whole movie is a mess. Jar Jar is just the cherry on top!
George Lucas never wanted to direct TPM - it was offered around but nobody wanted to direct. Eventually, as we understand it, Spielberg convinced George it was his baby and he should direct it himself… not Spielberg’s finest hour!!

Fair Play to you for giving this Film your review. Personally, I walked out of the Cinema during Star Wars VI back in 1983. The moment the little Teddy Bears made their debut, I was out. I haven't bothered with the franchise since. So I am curious to hear what you have to say. By all accounts the Prequels were somewhat of a financial success and a Fan/Critical mess. If anyone likes these films, then good for you. They are for kids, not for me.

Next time I watch the prequel trilogy I think I'll skip The Phantom Menace and just watch Weird Al's "The Saga Begins" video instead. Tells you all the relevant plot points and only lasts five minutes, truly a work of genius!

I have to say, for as much as "The Force Awakens" and "The Last Jedi" are flawed in different ways, I can say that I never found myself bored as shit in the same way I was with "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" during the majority of their runtimes.

This prequel trilogy is George’s bloated hubris on screen. This film is beyond putrid. In retrospect, the hideous Special Editions should’ve made clear what was in store for all of us. Wish I could forget it all.
