"Jar Jar is the key to all this"
-George Lucas, 1997
+Crafty Seagull Every scene is soooo.....dense
kylo ren is jar jar binks
*darth jar jar
Damn that was a quick reply
special effects without a story is a pretty boring thing
Ok, hold on.
I take issue with your lack of historical knowledge.
Yes, kings can be elected. It's called elective monarchy and took place for example in Poland for hundreds of years.
Yes, kings can be underaged if they prove themselves to be smart and mature. There are multiple examples in history of underage monarchs without regents. Some of them were even absolute monarchs without Grand Council. And proved to be very efective and independent.
And whatever applies to kings can also apply to queens. It's called cognatic monarchy.
And finally - even if it wasn't the case- It is a science fiction movie. You said yourself that they don't have to be logical all the time.
MJPK13 True that. I was referring to the idea of regency. But you're right that emperors of China are an extreme example for that. The question is - what was their actual power?
+Krzysztof Dąbrowski Thanks for that - But you can understand if you think about it... I have never heard of this practise before and most countries in the world do not teach that this system exists... Its almost always taught that it is a birth right...
You're welcome. :)
I see, sir, that you are British, so it is safe to assume you know your share about monarchy. You surely also know about situations when the line of succession isn't so clear. Then, of course, all the relatives of the late monarch can pretend to the crown, but isn't the winner unoficially picked by the Nobles via financial and military support? And more often than not it is a child that can be easily manipulated, isn't it?
Election is just making it very official. ;)
Well, UK has long and rich history on it's own, so no wonder you don't learn much about the history of the continent. And nothing wrong with that. :)
Warren Marris
+Krzysztof Dąbrowski Yep, the current swedish royal line was democratically elected by the Riksdag with full support of all four social classes back during the days of Napoleon. It was fairly common throughout northern Europe before the crusades and missionaries converted people to christianity.
Krzysztof Dąbrowski You would be surprised how little most of us Brits know about the Monarchy... People think they do but truth is most of us know sod all!!! :) At least I admit it...
The more time goes on, the more I realize Jake Lloyd was a pretty cute child actor. And I think that's the point. It's tragic when he turns into a hormonal teen and then into pure evil.
Hmm. . . After I JUST SAW THIS . . . In a way, the prequel trilogy journey from Anakin to Darth Vader is kinda like Jake Lloyd.
1: Like Anakin who was cute at first, so was Jake Lloyd
2: Like Anakin who turned into a hormonal teen, so did Jake Lloyd
3: Like Anakin who turned into pure evil after being betrayed, so did Jake Lloyd
No, child actors are awful
Who says queens can't be children? KINGS have certainly BEEN CHILDREN.
No king has ruled BEING a child. Someone else takes care of the kingdom like the minister or the current queen while the child grows up.

My bad then
Its still stupid to elect an child.
Henry VI was King of England at 9 months. His father died at that age.
Makes perfect sense to have a Baby King.
Is it bad to say that I don't hate this movie nor do I hate Jar Jar Binks?
+BRRGames No, why would it be bad to say that?
+Dylan Murphy Because fans are fickle especially when it comes to this. I kid you not I got called literally worse than a pedophile for saying that A) I don't think they're bad or that I like them and B) I might think one of the prequels is the best Star Wars movie of the 6. Also I'm told my opinion in movies or anything is null and void if I don't consider Empire to be the best Star Wars anything ever.
KazeAizen It's the same vice versa, believe it or not. I've been called a worthless piece of shit, a "hater," and not a true Star Wars fan all for not liking the prequels.
CarrotGentleman You're not fooling anyone.
+Dylan Murphy ^.^
I liked the Droidekas.
+MisterSmiley91 well, they are supposed to look like walking skeletons...also, they're threatning in great numbers
+TheBrownTown008 Unless you played the original Battlefront's as the republic. Then you would start to hate them.
+MisterSmiley91 I always thought the battle droids were adorable and kind of felt bad when they get killed wholesale. I've been watching the 2008 Clone Wars series for the first time and the battle droids are hilariously tragic characters in that show.
+MisterSmiley91 I think HelloGreedo said it best: The droids in the prequels were only created to show off cool lightsaber action.
+MisterSmiley91 I think anyway what the regular droids were to be meant as a cheap military forces what they can replace with ease. It was more like a "Let's overflow the enemy with a lot of weak robots" than "let's have some few badass robots".
In a way, George Lucas did ruin one person's childhood: Jake Lloyd's. Though really, the rabid "fans" were responsible for that.
Imagine being a kid and having grown ups full on blame you for ruining a franchise. That is so stupid I can’t even pretend I know what he went through.
But interms of Anakin Skywalker written character is more smarter written than people think.
In Episode 1: Fear
Episode 2: Despair
Episode 3: Conspiracy, doubt, manipulation.
It all adds up to how he becomes evil. Compare it to Trump MAGA base and its perfect summary for autocrat system
@@matrix91234 True.
Imagine thinking George Lucas is responsible for something that was a result of unintelligent, bitter and hateful fans lol.
@@Wackaz That is so painfully true it’s not even funny.
I fucking loved this movie when I was a kid. I was one of those people that when they like something I would do it over and over again... sooo basically I watched this movie about 30-40 times or something like that. The part that I'm most proud of is that I didn't skip anything in the movie, ever, I would watch the COMPLETE movie. every. single. time. Just to get to that epic ending. I don't remember laughing at jar jar, only being annoyed that he just fucked up the others shit all the time. Tomorrow I'm going to watch Star Wars: The force awakens, and it feels UNREAL, I'm so fucking hyped, I've seen the trailer at least 10 times.
What do you think about the sequel movies now.
ThursAfternoon I freaking love the sequel series
It's a disconnected mess
Yes, children can be monarchs.
Bright Sky
Not just them, if I remember right, several European monarchies had child monarchs.
Douglass Whipple King Edward VI of England was a child king
Douglass Whipple it's Star Wars. It's their own rules
Monarchs can be elected too, Vikings anyone?
The last chinese emperor agrees...
While this movie is bad,it had a lot of things that I liked about it,so I gave it a pass.
+kristof gergely same here
+kristof gergely - Me too

+WREQUIEM ok
I think the pod races are cool. and the action and the score 'Duel of Fates'.
Nowadays, I just find this movie to be alright. I'm more or less tired of all the complaints this movie keeps getting. Personally, I'd say the weakest is the second movie.
Though, honestly, I don't quite understand how Jar Jar is a stereotype. The others, maybe, but for him, I find it harder to believe.
I don't think Jar Jar is "racist", he's just incredibly annoying.
+Shade2800 I personally don't see the stereotype as strongly as others, but if you're interested, his "well-meaning doofus" personality and use of jargon such as "meesa" are *very* reminiscent of the racist archetypes used in blackface minstrelsy.
Now, I can completely understand the stereotypes seen in the other aliens (I don't necessarily agree, but I can at least understand where people are coming from). Jar Jar, though? I think he's just meant to be stupid, and nothing else. Lucas is a bad director, but I doubt he's some bigot who's taking his thoughts out through film.
+Shade2800 The reason Jar Jar is considered a stereotype is because his portrayal is reminiscent of the way African Americans were portrayed in minstrel shows from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Personally, I don't think that this was intentional by Lucas, but I can't make myself un-see it now that I've made that connection.
+Shade2800
I never understood this "stereotype" thing. What, is every alien with an accent suddenly racist? Is Obi-Wan racist against English people? Because he's an extraterrestrial, too.
Ikrani It more boils down to specific design elements, mannerisms, and patterns of speech than just, "aliens with accents".
If you look at old Asian stereotypes, then compare them to some of the aliens featured in the movie, you will see a lot of striking similarities: The way they talk, the way they dress, the way they act and react. Add to that the fact that they're _aliens_ (e.g. "illegal immigrants") and you have a recipe for a bona fide racist stereotype.
The reason why someone like Obi-Wan isn't considered racist is because he isn't portrayed in a negative light.
I honestly don't understand why people hate the prequels SO MUCH. Sure, they're not perfect, but they are far from being as terrible as people say they are.
I like them for the action scenes and the politics aren't really that hard to follow. Jarjar is stupid and Padme/Anakin dialogue is stilted but I can live with that, but I started SW with the Phantom Menace and was 9 or 10 at the time. I can understand where the critics are coming from though, I feel the same way about the last two seasons of Game of Thrones.
They are still pretty bad.
I personally did not get it when people said that there were racial stereotypes in this film. Against which races or ethnicities? Even to this day I can't place the accents of the characters people say are offensive. Jar Jar Binks wasn't exactly that funny to me, but he wasn't horrifically awful like everyone says he was. He got a smile once in a while. With the politics, even as a little kid, I personally found it only slightly interesting, but it was still easy enough to understand. It was kind of cool to see how Palpatine slowly slithered his way up the chain of government to eventually come to control everything. The secondary antagonist was one of my favorites. I loved Darth Maul and his saber staff even though we really weren't told much about him. When you looked at him, he didn't only look evil, he felt evil. My skin crawled the first time I saw his eyes. You wanted to learn more about him and find out what led to him being Palpatine's apprentice.
Dan Eyal They're the follow-ups to one of the most beloved movie trilogies ever made. And they're not very good films.
They are not bad if you compare them to star wars a holiday speical or the 2 ewok movies.
This Movie didn't kill my Childhood but disappointed my Adulthood.
Mike Stoklasa, is that you?
I agree but then again, the movie was made for 12 year olds and not adults.
This movie didn't kill my childhood. Attack of the Clones did.
Good god, it wasn't a BAD movie! It's a decent prequel story. The politics got slow at parts, but the story itself was decent. Stop having "nerd gang mentality".
@@lisardo no, it's bad. Bad dialogue, bad effect, poor camerawork. But! It's still the best in the Prequel trilogy.
Honestly speaking I think Attack of the Clones is far worse. As bad as Menace was I give it credit for at least looking like a film, with props, sets, costumes and an ''okay'' balance of practical and computer generated effects. Plus two creative scenes such as the Pod Race and the Darth Maul fight. Clones feels utterly and completely soulless in almost every single frame.
Bane Knightfall it kind of fits though, many of the clones that fought on Geonosis were souless thoughtless killing machines.
I don't give a s about how a movie looks like a movie. The story is fascinating in all three of the movies.
I love the set up to the eventual betrayal of the Clones where the Republic is extremely desperate for an army, to the point where they do not think about a possible catch with the army so conveniently handed to them. The whole trilogy feels like something of a real life future conspiracy.
To this day one of my favorite memories in a movie theater was the opening to Phantom Menace. I was about 9 and had grown up thinking that the effects/choreography in the original trilogy were amazing and couldn't be beat. However when Obi wan and Qui Gon burst through the door and started tearing through droids, deflecting blaster bolts, and actually using the force against them, to say that I was blown away would be an overwhelming understatement.
I only saw this on VHS growing up, but I was also hugely impressed by the opening and particularly loved Qui-Gon throughout the rest of the film. It holds a special place in my heart all 'round.
I thought Maul was the coolest guy ever as a kid. Especially when he showed the double blade. And Maul VS Qui gonn was the most epic thing
Watch "The Clone Wars." That show is a million times better. The characters are all interesting, the stories are well-written, and you get sucked into the world much more easily because of it. I 100% recommend it.
An actually heroic and emotional Anakin!
This aged well.
Definitely not good for your trilogy to rely on a show to make it good.
"The effects WAY too computer generated" while showing a practical explosion of a Naboo miniature fighter
ok :D
In my opinion, Obi-Wan, and Qui-Gon, especially as a master and apprentice are pretty great in this movie. It's never usually stated, but they have a lot of scenes together, and they do talk a lot. I feel you get a sense of the relationship, so by the time Qui-Gon is killed it feels impactful. I don't know, just my opinion.
Surprised he didn't mention the Podracing at all.
Reveal Patten Its clear a lot of effort went into the visuals and sound design. The best sequences in the film are when the characters shut up and the visuals and sound take over. No toddler humor, no boring dialogue, no robotic acting, just a celebration of spectacle.
And then we follow it up with Courasaunt.
The Phantom Menace is a bad movie saved by decent sequences such as these. Attack of the Clones doesn't have that redeeming action moment. The action is enjoyable but only because we are grateful that something is finally happening. The boredom arising from politics and romance was too much that we are at a point where we'd be grateful for any kind of action no matter how meh.
+jstarwars360 I dunno, in Attack of the Clones, I thought the Battle of Geonosis was pretty cool. And I guess I'm one of the few people who found the political battles of the sequels just as interesting as the physical ones. Especially when you realize...that it plays a VITAL role to the series. It explains why the Republic became the Empire. and I thought that was fascinating. I still don't like the two movies that much because of the cheesy dialogue and terrible romance, but there were quite a few things that I legitimately liked about them.
+jstarwars360 The podracing scene looks amazing, but it is terribly directed. Thankfully you get a clear view of everything that is going on, sure, but the pacing is terrible, it goes on too long, and the shots are surprisingly repetitive (watch Chris Stuckmann's review to see what I am talking about)
Robert Wild Just saw it. Stuckmann ruined the Podrace for me forever.
jstarwars360 Sorry, but it needed to be done, hehe
Hey Doug ... Are you an angel?
anxhelo preci Why the hell would I want to see Jar Jar for 2 hours?
What?
The Guy Named Kazeram general kenobi
I grew up with the prequel movies and no matter how hard I try, I can't dislike them
I thought you said you'll never review this.
So, how and why are alien characters racial stereotypes? I don't understand that.
Clyde Marshall I don't see what people are talking about either. Like why do people keep comparing jar jar banks to black people?
They were doing that? I always thought of ducks or platypuses when someone mentioned Jar Jar.
Clyde Marshall A couple reasons. One, with his accent and long ears that act almost like dreadlocks, the Jar Jar is a big stereotype of Jamaicans. The fact that he's played by a black man doesn't help. Boss Mass as well has an accent that's very Jamaican/African.
Watto's accent is based on Alec Guinness's role as Fagin in Oliver Twist, and Fagin is considered a pretty awful stereotype of Jews.
And the Viceroy and his lacky... just look at their faces and listen to their accents and try to tell me they're not Asian stereotypes. It's actually pretty painful...
Yeah but they're aliens from a long time ago and far far away.
ChadtheDJguy lol that's the excuse that George Lucas thought we'd all accept. There's no getting around the painful accents and stereotypes. Lucas probably thought it would be funny, but it's what happens when a terrible writer thinks he can do satire.
Outside of Jar Jar, Watto, and the other computer generated characters, I actually think the effects are absolutely phenomenal. There's a lot of great use of miniatures that blend well with background CG, as well as some actual for realsies sets. Sure, there's miniatures and sets in Episodes II and III, but they never blend quite as well as they do here.
I have no problem with the midichlorians
Christian Ogden I personally used to have a problem with midichlorians, but then Star Wars The Clone Wars (Great TV show by the way) explained during the sixth season that midichlorians were just another part of the mystical force and that it wasn't very important.
Jake The Snake yeah it was the same with me.
4:56 Who here was caught off-guard by that expression and thought he was talking about Palpatine wearing no clothes?
The darth Maul fight is still my favourite fight in the series, just incredible
Just watched this movie again in prep for Star Wars Episode XI this year. Yep, starting from the beginning. While my nostalgia came through and actually made it watchable, but as the first chapter in a major film franchise like Star Wars, what a letdown...
I agree that the movie sucks, but the “fans” who sent death threats to Ahmed Best are the scum of humanity.
💯💯💯💯💯
Soooo true.
I don't get why people are so hard on the Midiclorian (or however it's written) thing. To me it made sense and doesn't change anything we knew about the Force. It's not like they say people have the Force because of the Miclorian, they have high Midiclorian count because they have the Force. Qui-Gon (or however it's written) says that Midiclorian are micro-organisms that tend to get near the presence of the force. That's it. Basically it's animals that have a sixth sense in feeling the Force in others, and he hears what these animals have to say.
I understand criticism from a storytelling point of view, saying that that scene is too scientific and clashes with how mystic the Force is supposed to be, but I believe in the prequels they wanted to make the Jedi look realistic, since they were still around, while in the original trilogy they were more of a legend. Either way it doesn't change anything in the movies' continuity.
+KrossoverGod Most haters were like 20/30 when TPM came out and grew up glorifying the original trilogy like they weren't kiddie movies too. But they hate for hate's sake and criticize stuff they don't even try to understand.
+KrossoverGod
I think the main reason people hate the Midiclorian thing is because it takes away some of the mystery of the force.
+buck342443 Which it doesn't, if you stop to think about it. The only thing they "ruined" was the notion that it was one's own "power" that allowed them to tap into the Force. It still exists and you can still be sensitive to it, it just has a little bit of science in there too. It's the same thing as Mass Effect's biotics or StarCraft's psi powers, and you don't see those getting the shit the poor midichlorians get.
LucianCanad
Well most people weren't thinking of it like that at the time and for myself I could have cared less, because it didn't really add anything of any real substance, it's not like our new found knowledge of midiclorian came back later for something really important.
+RexVergstrong I was 13 when TPM came out and I LOATHE the addition of Midichlorians. Hell as far as most can tell except for TPM that idea has been completely and totally eliminated from the Star Wars Mythos.
Truthfully, I never really saw the offensive stereotypes. Maybe because I'm not familiar enough with those stereotypes to begin with to really see it with the mask of aliens, but even having been told what they are, it's not something that really affects my opinion of the movie.
The racial stereotypes don't exist in the Latin-American dub and the acting is slightly less bad
+BENDROWNED33 how did you guys dub it??? its an american movie though.
+joey8062 Not sure if trolling or...
+BENDROWNED33 Yep, i noticed that in the dub from Spain too, the translations are made so that the meaning is still the same, but the way of delivering that information is changed where it needs to be so it doesnt get cringeworthy ( the "i wish i could wish away my feelings" part is portrayed more like "i wish i could change my feelings, but i cant", in Revenge, Darth Vader loudly groans before the "NOO!" and in the Blu Ray version of Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader remains silent at the end, like in the original version (he doesnt say NOOO!).
The delivery is THAT monotone either (but still is a bit monotone since they must stay close to the original performances, they cant change them, its not like the dialog, they cant change one or two things in the acting and still keep the same message, in this case, the same delivery).
I guess that, the ones that watched the PT in its original language had a more irritating product than those who live in a country that dont have english as their first language (Like Latin-America, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, and so on)
+BENDROWNED33 about stereotypes, why these stereotypes are offensive to you people? if it was say, an arabian stereotype you wouldn't complain, if it was an australian stereotype you wouldn't complain.
so what type of stereotypes were these characters?
I don't get it, hoe can there be racial stereotypes if they are aliens?(and what are the stereotypes? I am not american so I don't know.)
As a kid I didn't have much of a critical mind for movies so I didn't hate it. After all, the villain (Darth Maul) was cool as hell (in fact, I'm still salty for the fact that it got killed so quickly...same with Greevious), Liam Neeson and Ewan Mcgregor looked great.
I mean, the design of a lot of things was still star wars-y, and that, I believe, is what I enjoyed mostly of all the movies.
So yeah the thing I'm still salty about is...How the heck do you waste such material?
But thanks to that, they got awesome story arcs in the Clone Wars Netflix series!
Supertron
Because at least some people knows how to use GOOD CHARACTERS :p
+Michele Castellani honestly, i never cared for Darth Maul. he is definitely the weakest with there is. heck, i don't even think he gets a line in this film.
*sith
Thomas Hall
Yes but that's because of a bad script. The design is awesome
So I’m one of those kids who grew up with this film and I easily say that nostalgia plays a HUGE role in my opinion of the film.
I know it’s bad, there’s a lot to make fun of.
But I can’t get myself to hate the film no matter how hard I try.
And I know for a fact that I’m not the only one who has this mentality.
The same guy who said Last Jedi is an awesome movie:
Nostalgia Critic killed my childhood.
Well at least episode VII brought the series back to life.
It seems unfair to say that the critics were wrong because they had a different response to the anoraks.
stereotypes of what? stereotypes of talking CG frog people? I don't get it.
+Phillip Covey The "frog people" were seen as racist Asian stereotypes because of their accents, attire and appearance.
See "I was not aware...... of such failure" line
Straight out of a racist cartoon
+ScotRail380018 really never got that from Jar Jar were do people see Asian? I just saw a silly cartoon charter
+Phillip Covey
The trade federation guys are asian stereotypes and the Skywalkers' owner is a jewish stereotype. Jar Jar might be a jamaican stereotype? I don't have a firm grasp on him.
These aliens are fiction, created by humans. They are humanoid in appearance, manner and speech. Thus, they are connected more to real humans than to anything else. Creators of fiction always draw inspiration from the real world and quite frankly, fiction is useless if it can't tell us anything about our own reality.
+ScotRail380018 So basically, if any species resembles a race, it's offensive stereotyping? Gosh, this world we live in cares too much. It's more "innocent" to hold onto these supposed stereotypes than to denounce them.
Monarch can't be elected?.
The Polish-Lithuanian,Malaysian and the Vatican actually does.
(yes, Vatican city is technically a monarchy).
When I was a kid, they never showed the original three in TV here where I live, so for the longest time, this and the episode II were the only Star Wars movies I knew. I honestly even had no idea the original theree existed, because this was the number one, so it had to be the first, right? And.... I loved these two movies like crazy. My parents recorded them for me on VHS and I watched them A LOT. They actually what started my fascination with sci-fi and space in general. So, this movie and the one after it might be objectivally bad, but for me, they will always have a very special place in my heart.
Personally, I think checking out bad art can be as influential as checking out good art. Looking at bad stuff helps you to see what not to do, which can be just as helpful as knowing what to do. Watching a bunch of Doug's videos have given me a good idea of what goes into a good movie or story in general, both what to do and what to avoid.
The best thing about this movie is the imagery. Yeah, I know it would have looked a lot better if Lucas used a lot more practical effects. However, I like the space ship designs, droid designs, planets and so on. It was all really cool and unique.
Honestly people don’t appreciate the practical effects in these films
Mustafar snd kamino we’re both miniatures and I don’t think most people know they just assume it’s CG
...and the no.1 Movie-Review I will never make is:
+Ska Mensch
It's not a full "review", it's just a Disneycember spotlight…is probably not a good enough argument, so yeah, he probably just changed his mind, which I think he said he could do, I'm don't remember for sure.
*AS NOSTALGIA CRITIC*
Anime avatar... heh, colour me surprized
The thing I remember most about this movie:
The day I saw it was a week after a horrible bout of the flu. I walked out of the theater, walked about 5 minutes to the local grocery store and vomited into their open trash can. A true story.
Anywho... I think it's ego with directors, they make something great, they think can do it again. I heard, *I can't remember where* That the next two movies were HORRENDOUSLY controlled by other people. They had an iron fist on Lucas and tried to keep him from making horrendous mistakes that they knew would doom the series.
For the prequel: He hired a bunch of "Yes men" and went to town on his own ideas and beliefs without wanting to listen to anyone else except himself. It's the same for a lot of people, they make magic and then they try to repeat it over and over again without listening to anyone else. Look at the video game industry if you ever want a prime example.
So, as someone who only recently viewed these movies, can someone explain why Midichlorians are so bad? When I found out that they were what made a Jedi a Jedi, I was like "Ok, now we know this fact", not "OMG this is the worst thing ever".
They don't make a jedi a jedi
Because the Force had to do with spirituality before. It was vague, mystical, and you could project many different things onto it. The prequels told us that it's just biology. It's not something that ever needed to be explained, and it ruins some of the fantasy aspect of Star Wars.
+Zaziuma (Patrick Jensen) People complain like retards and didn't understand them. Midichlorians are NOT the Force and they don't change the mystical aspects of it. They are parts of cells of beings which help the Force flow better through them. And that gives people with more midichlorians per cell a better chance to be atuned to the Force. It doesn't automatically makes them Jedi or be able to control the Force like professionals. It's more about potential, not power.
Manuel Alberto Romero
The more you have, the better the Jedi you are, that's why Anakin is so special, or did I totally miss the idea?
Jacob Oehlenschlager
Who says spirituality cannot have those kinds of aspects? Yes, it's not how it is in the real world, but did you forget that it's a sci-fi movie?
...So in other words, Episode I is the "The Room" of Star Wars?
i really never understood the hatred for the prequels. they explained a lot about the force, the star wars universe, and Anakin's decent to the dark side, and I enjoyed them...hell i'm probably one of the few people that thinks jar jar was actually funny. granted the originals were infinitely better but the prequels were at least decent movies....also what racial slurs was he talking about?
+clericofchaos1 the trade federation with their accent and design seem kind of like an Asian caricature. The one I've never been able to pinpoint though is Jar Jar. Even after I started paying attention to that kind of stuff. On another note the prequels did one thing, mostly because they had a budget, better than the originals. They actually gave us a sense of life in the galaxy beyond the frame. The galaxy actually feels alive in the prequels where in the OT not so much.
Not slurs you idiot. Insensitive stereotypes. Jar Jar is a stereotype of an 1800's slave. You can tell due to his speech patterns and lack of anybody of education. The trade federation were very obvious Asian stereotypes, talking in very stilted English. Watto is a middle eastern/Italian/Jewish stereotype. I guess George just wanted three stupid insensitive clichés for the price of one with him.
+clericofchaos1 "They explained a lot"
That's the problem with Shamyalan movies. They explained, not demonstrated. Told, not showed.
+Jacob Oehlenschlager No you idiot, Watto is obviously a Southern stereotype! He's poor, likes Space NASCAR, and owns slaves! And Jar Jar can't be an 1800's slave since he's supposed to be Jamaican! (See, you can make any alien a "stereotype" if you stretch enough.)
+clericofchaos1 Have you watched the Clone Wars? If not them I STRONGLY recommend it, both the drawn one and the longer CGI one. Both are freaking amazing and I can't help but feel that they are what I wanted the prequels to be.
Anakin is sympathic but rash and at times ruthless, Padme is a diplomat, Obi Wan gets a really nice backstory, the new characters are pretty damn awesome, the settings are fantastic, the pacing is great. And there are mandalorians.
At least watch "Rookies" in the first season, it is the episode that gets a lot of people hooked. No jedi, no characters from the movies. Just two badass clone veterans and a bunch of new clone troopers fighting on their own. Really shows their personality, their worldview and how the Confederacy is such a threat.
This was the first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters and I LOVED it. To this day, I still REALLY like it. I've seen the original trilogy, and I DO like them more than I like this one, but not by much.
And I'm not ashamed to admit it.
I may be blind or unbearably naive but: WHAT STEREOTYPES!!!
There aren't any. Haters just be looking for trouble
I have a feeling that it's only racists who are looking at these aliens and seeing some some sort of racial minority.
The obligatory "if you like it, great" section at the end was less then complimentary but you could tell he was trying XD
I like Watto and the Neimoidians. I never saw them as stereotypes as a kid, I saw them as unique characters with different visual and vocal styles. Bsides, Watto is apparently a war vet in the canon, so that's funny enough to make me respect him.
Since the Disney Trilogy finished, I can safely say that the prequels were actually pretty good movies.
Agreed. The prequels respected Star Wars lore while also built the world further.
Except the prequels weren’t good movies
At least sequel Defenders Defender movie on its own merits not by other movies
In Germany, the Trade Alliance were speaking with a Monthy-Python-Holy-Grail-like french accent and its hillarious :)
I love the fact that there is no message from the movie, is the movie itself the one that it's a good example of a bad example
This is the perfect way to review the Prequels, and to do it in such a short amount of time is amazing. Doug actually makes the Prequels feel nostalgic all of a sudden, even if they were mostly bad. Too bad I rewatched them all recently...
This film was bad, but Attack of the Clones was MUCH worse imo.
true especialy the stupid robot factory part.DULL
Personally i don’t agree i love AOTC more than TESB
I used to have no idea that there were Star Wars prequels for the longest time when I was younger. I was introduced to Star Wars through the original trilogy and was obsessed with them, watching them over and over again. And once I found out that there was more and more to come, I needed to see them as soon as I could. And I gotta say that I like the prequels too. They're by no means perfect but I still love them. I can't quite put my finger on why I enjoy them so much but I definitely think that they don't deserve the amount of hate they get. Most of the hate is probably just generated from the hype many people had for the prequels due to the long wait, while people like me didn't need to wait as long. Nine times out of ten, you'll probably think what you originally grew up with is better, combine that with a ton of hype met with disappointment and hate for what's new and different is born.
Even worse, Lucas didn't even write all the humour and memerable parts of ANH, his friends did! Directing wise, the actors had to practically direct themselves, because Lucas was almost a mute on set.
I understand everyone has the right to like what they like, but it's just so suspect that a movie, 3 movies in fact do great it the box office , and with critics then lose all that acclaim 10 years later, and now all of a sudden it's because we were ashamed to admit they were bad when we say them the first time? give me a break, what an insult! I'm not double minded, nor am I weak minded, if I like something I like it, am I to believe that millions of people were intimidated to say they didn't like a movie? clearly that's not the culture we live in. it's just become cool now to give undeserved hate to a movie, it's a fun foolish movie with flaws as were the ot, which I grew up on.
The phantom Menace is my favourite of the prequels
I started my Star Wars experience with Star Wars Battlefront, so I kinda got to see both the prequels and the original movies represented equally, and that's kind of how I still stand where it comes to Star Wars as a whole. I've watched the movies, I've played the games, but all in all I like every part of it. I don't feel biased toward any aspect, and I don't downright hate any aspect. The creativity in the designs, the limitless potential for new ideas, the amazing battles, I think there's plenty to make up for any negative products the Star Wars franchise has brought out.
Darth maul is criminally underused.
I swear if this movie was made now it would get even a worse reaction for the politics.
at least it gave us darth maul
I gotta be honest, I think the prequels are decent
They are more than that. Fanboys simply can't stop bitching.
Kharmazov yeah, they are still relatively good movies, especially the 3rd one. They just weren't as groundbreaking as the originals.
+Kharmazov dude, they as movies alone, were not good. they had no main character, no character development, and a boring all over the place story line. to love them just because they are star wars, is ok, but some people just don't apreciate the lack of effort. the fact that these were written so quickly, so lazily, to take our money, thinking that we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a good movie and a bad movie simply because its "Star Wars" is insulting. I've come to accept them, and I don't want them rebooted for nostalgia's sake, but I will never say they are good, let alone great.
Rogue Skywalker
I humbly beg to disagree. Anakin developed quite nicely despite the Hadersons faults. Same goes for Obi-Wan. And don't even let me mention Palpatine. And on and on.
Let me guess, you actually like The Force Awakens. If you think these were just written to take our money, you haven't seen episode 7.
As someone who saw this in a movie theater in 1999, still to this day, I feel like a lot of the hate it gets, is people feeling emberrassed that they saw it, and they have to force hate on it when discussing it with others, as though it's expected or demanded. No, it's not a perfect Star Wars movie, but I feel like anyone's definition of a perfect Star Wars movie is going to be stifled, because to many of the Star Wars fans, if it isn't Empire Strikes Back, then the person is dead wrong. The perfect SW movie to me is Revenge Of The Sith, and yes, I had seen the original, unaltered trilogy in the 90s before I saw the prequel trilogy. I do love the original trilogy, but I also love the prequel trilogy. They're fun and gave way to some really good spin-off media and video games. I remember my cousin watching Clone Wars all the time, and it was a really good show. I still absolutely love the games created from and around the prequel trilogy, which are still way better than the SNES trilogy, which I DID grow up with playing.
I just wish that other SW fans could just accept that others are going to have different opinions from them, and that it is alright. Nobody's telling them they're wrong for worshipping Empire Strikes Back, or that eny of the prequel movies are better than the original trilogy. I just like one or two of the prequel movies a bit more than the original movies.
I grew up with the prequel films and I remember loving them. Now before I saw them, I had seen the originals before hand so I had prior knowledge of what to expect but I was only a kid when I saw the prequels. Looking back on it now, I see that they aren't very good but they do have some good things in them.
Thank god for the prequels because now we know what not to do for The Force Awakens
+Elijah Martinez Like have George Lucas take absolute control over everything?
+Elijah Martinez Like not make it at all. That movie should be scrapped from history. Never should've been made in the first place. Star Wars should be over and done with the movies now.
YTWarrior100 Like the prequels should never have been made?
I swear to fucking Christ if I see one more comment saying “the prequels are good” I’m gonna throw Kylo Ren’s satansaber through the commenters face.
The deleted scenes in A New Hope had politics there, but more grass-roots perspective on it: the empire was forcefully buying out farms on Tatoiine, and there was a risk the Owen farm would fall victim for this and the family would be reduced to tenants.
i did grow up with only the phantom menace, i used to like jar jar, i kind of like the effects, but they hardly hold up today. up until i was 11, this was the only star wars film i saw. so yes, i see that its bad now, but it's still nostalgic for me to watch it.
This is one of my favorites!
I used to like this movie when I was a child. But years later I did what Doug said: Rewatching the prequels, thinking about their stories and realizing they don't make any sense.
The good thing about it is the final message of Doug for artists. Oh, and the racing videogame.
As someone who actually was a kid when this came up, I actually could somewhat follow the plot.
I get that Lucas missed the mark on with these prequel movies demographic wise in such a spectacular fashion, but I also kind of saw what he were trying to accomplish as sort of the analogous cautionary tale of what America can become if we let it slide to far using the roman republics fall and transition into an empire as model using the Star Wars universe, sure that was a tall order doomed to fail but I totally appreciate the sheer oddity and originality of that idea.
I was introduced to Star Wars from these movies so they're important to me.
I defend this movie but Revenge of the Sith is still my favourite of all Star Wars products.
I like the mediclorians. It gave a sense of how much of the culture has become clouded and forgotten.
the same amount of hype came 15 years later in the days before episode 7 was released. I am happy to assure you that it is worth the wait. IT looks very realistic compared to the prequels, there are no awkward lines, and it brings back old characters played by their original actors (though one of them dies by the hand of the sith lord with the cool lightsaber and has the best voice of any sith).
I find it interesting sometimes how a dub can change some characters in different ways. I have rarely watched the movies in English because my first language is French but for example, the Neimoidians don't have an asian accent in the French dub.
I never got the jar jar is black thing? did you really see jar jar for the first time and see a black person? maybe Lucas isn't the racist one here?
+w7100 I don't see a black stereotype; I see an italian stereotype.
+w7100 Because it's not a black stereotype of our day. Nowadays the stereotype is "thuggish" or "ratchet." But back in the day, it was about how black slaves and descendants were not educated and their way of pronouncing things. Actually that can still be applied to nowadays, but the pronunciation and uneducated behavior was different. Please don't talk about things you don't understand and then say that we're the ones being racist for pointing it out. It's very similar to their behavior, the same way that other species were based off of stereotypes.
yes I've seen enough Jack Benny and bob hope movies, even managed to get a copy of south of the south I know the type you assume I don't so please don't assume I'm ignorant of such things, but you know what I see when I see jar jar? a bad comic relief cgi alien that talks funny and steps in the poopy
+w7100 People are just trying to find something to get offended at, instead of criticizing relevant things. Like inconsistencies, and illogical plot holes.
+RabbitGirl It's a fucking sci-fi movie, it wasn't racist. IT WAS A FUCKING ALIEN, SPEAKING IN A CERTAIN WAY. That's all there is to it.
I'm so relieved that Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is getting outstanding reviews. Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times says the movie is “A beautiful, thrilling, joyous, surprising and heart-thumping adventure”. Calvin Wilson from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens brings fresh energy to the franchise while adhering to the storytelling values that made it matter in the first place” I’m so happy that Star Wars fans got to see the sequel trilogy they waited to see for 32 years, and George Lucas was able get the help he wanted from J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, and Michael Arndt Now that there’s a bright future for Star Wars, there’s no need to blame George Lucas for anything anymore. George finally did what he wanted to do with the prequels; he put Star Wars in better hands after 16 years of being scorned. Peace be with you George. I can’t wait to see the movie in 10 days with my family.
Nice pun there at the end.
I enjoy this movie. I disagree with everyone who says it's bad. I don't think anyone has been able to prove that it's a bad movie from a film making perspective. It's all opinion and taste arguments that have swayed the consensus.
I don't think Jake Lloyd is a bad kid actor. I've known kids that act like he does in this movie in real life.
I don't think the acting is wooden. I think it's more realistic than charismatic. How can anyone be as charismatic as a smuggler, a princess, and a couple of fugitives in a political environment?
I think the racism is a stupid knit pick, because the originals were just as racist. I think it's clever racism, not at all hateful, and not at all exclusive to any specific race of people. He got the Indians with the Ewoks, the Caucasians with the Balls Chins, the Latinos with Lando's co-pilot, and the Asians with the Jawas. He was too scared to make a black stereotype though, and just included a singular black man. Played it smart with that one.
I think it's enjoyable for what it is, which is a political drama with action elements. It's not as fantastical as the originals, no. But for what it is, there's actually not that much wrong with it. I think it was constructed as lore, so the only way it could be translated to film was a bit more rigid in style. I think there's emotion in this movie, if you can stretch out with your feelings and look past cynicism to feel empathy for the pain of others, even if they're annoying children or stoic warriors of religion. I enjoyed the pod-racing, and felt like I was in the podracer. My favorite humor moment of this movie is where the droid gets sucked through the engine and survives with a thrilled cheer. I think that was hilarious.
I think at one point George realized there was no comedy in his script, something that had become essential to the franchise in the originals, and frantically added a bunch of jokes (in ill taste - absolutely) centered around a character with less restraint on role in the story. Jar Jar's introduction was actually somewhat witty if you can understand what he's saing. It's not until the life debt comes in that he becomes over bearing and down right cringe-worthy at times. Yes, the poop jokes are bad. Nobody likes poop jokes, except people who don't mind sitting in their own poop.
There was no way this movie could live up to it's predecessors, but it's not bad. It's just not the taste for many fans of the originals. I think this particular movie is made for fans of the lore, hardcore nerds of the universe rather than casual Star Wars fans, which is why I think the hype surrounding it is why the general opinion these days is a retarded collective nay-utterance. It's made for people who ponder over questions and genuinely want answers. My personal opinion is that it's brilliant, but highly inaccessible to casual movie goers.
"What can i say about the most despised moie prequel in history?"
Its better than attack of the clones
muskatDR nope in my opinion
To be honest the people that "see offensive stereotypes" may well be the ones with the issue.
Especially since the majority of people suddenly seeing "racism" or whatever trash happened in this decade.
Not to say this movie is good, but that is not one of its problems.
I live in México, we don't know any of that american-stereotypes you talk about when i was a kid, this was my first Star Wars movie and i enjoy it, it introduce me to the franchise and make me interested at the original films, so, its still a very good movie to me.
I enjoy this movie because I grew up with it, but I will never say it's a great movie. I fully acknowledge that it's a nostalgia thing for me, and really nothing more. I agree with every single flaw, but for some reason, I still watch it every now and then. I guess the power of nostalgia can overpower the knowledge that something is actually bad.
I like Jar-Jar. Great review!
You like Jar-Jar, huh? Be careful where you say that. There's people out there who'd crucify you for saying that!
+MiscellaneousSoup Good for you.
+MiscellaneousSoup I love him too!
Midiclhorians are speculated to serve as the link between the human/alien body and mystical energies of the force. The idea wouldn't have been all that dumb if it was explained like that.
Even though its bad you still get to see the original characters from the last three films like Jabba The Hut,R2-D2,C3PO,The Emperor,Yoda(puppet version not CGI until episode 1 was re-release in 3D and made yoda CGI),Obi Won Kenobi,And Anakin Skywalker who later became Darth Vader.
I totally get your point, and agree with it. But this movie did what it had to did (at least to me). As a 3 year old girl, a lot time ago, I kind of almost liked this movie. It was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw, and it made me watch the next one, and then the next one and so on. And now I love Star Wars.
So yeah, as crazy as it sounds, episode 1 invested me into the Star Wars universe.
I know I’m here pretty late but it seems like a lot of people are getting offended by Doug’s viewpoint on this film. Just keep in mind that it’s okay to enjoy bad films, I know I do. I’ll always have a soft spot for phantom menace but that doesn’t mean I can’t see what a poorly made film it is.
meh, episode 2 is much more boring.
I'll be perfectly honest here. I never watched Star Wars as a kid. My first time watching them was with my half brother. We grew up in different households. I told him I'd watch Star Wars if he watched Back to the Future. We watched them in Chronological order, not release order. I can see why people get upset about things like poor acting throughout, but honestly, I enjoy all 7 just as equally. (I haven't seen Rogue One yet)
I don't love it, but I don't hate it. It has a lot of good and bad things. I love the sith, the lightsaber battles, space battles, and I love seeing this set up what would become empire, with Palpatine pulling the strings. For those who don't know, Palpatine was the senator of Naboo, and used the Trade Federation to take control of the senate.
I loved Phantom Menace, it’s my childhood.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved the lightsaber duels, Jar Jar, the pod racing, all of it.
THANK YOU
OlafttheGreat1998 your welcome ^^
It offended many people with its stereotype?
Give me a break, it is so funny to see how people always tries to be offended nowadays. it is kind of a new game, they have to find something offensive in everything.
F**** them deep!
True freedom is also to be able to make fun of othesr or even being able to tell them how much you dislike them.
I've seen very split opinions on the pod racing, but as a kid, I was in freaking love with it. It was the coolest thing ever, and I wanted to one day be a pod racer. But I don't understand why some people didn't like it. Is it seriously only because of CG? Why does it matter? Does CG somehow take away from what was a very enjoyable and clearly high octane race? Is it that hard to appreciate that the CG artists were able to accomplish something like that?
I completely agree with Doug in the opening. The first Star Wars movie was a lucky fluke. It was saved in the editing room.
