- In this video I'm going to be showing you the procedure to reset the BMW E46 Throttle Position sensor. If your pedal feels rubbish or your acceleration feels rubbish or not right then this may be a trick for you to do. This will then re-learn your driving style.

What ghost were you chasing? Limp Mode gremlin? I am chasing that now.

I had this issue for a week.... check engine light, EML light , traction control light.....did this trick for my 2000 bmw e46 323i, worked like a charm.....then I cleared the check engine light...thank you sir!!😊😊(01/29/2024)

Could not recommend this enough. Drove my car home last night from my parents and I couldn’t get it to go without it flicking down a gear or being laggy. Did this before I went to work this morning and it’s like a completely different car. Thanks so much
I just did this on my BMW 325i m sport automatic, and it worked a dream. It was so laggy now it's perfect it seems to have helped my mpg as well it's it's not lagging between gear changes or acceleration. Cheers mate
my wife did this in our 740i but she got confused , she pressed the pedal to the floor then started the engine then held it , counted to a minute ,and i heard boom there were bits of pistons and oil all over the garden even in the street and next door .and the screen is cracked .
i do this once a month but you shouldnt , it will screw up your electrics .

I have a 01’ 530i, and I was messing around in INPA. I cleared the throttle adaptations in INPA and it instantly gave my car an EML light. You could clear the light, but when you restarted the car it would come back. This fixed it! Cheers mate
I bought my 2011 328i used. Thought it was strange that the gas pedal seemed to be very heavy to press like it was "sticky". This trick was brilliant my friend. Now the gas pedal feesl like butter again pushing down on it. Crazy it learns your driving style but this was a great hidden trick of these vehicles. Cheers, Mate.

Bro you just fixed my 4 month issue with my throttle body I would drive for like 10 mins then a eml light would come on and car would go into limp mode I tried this rn and took it for a drive I drove for about 40mins and drove amazing no eml issue fixed !

My throttle position sensor suddently went “Aaarh! I don’t know what I’m doing!”, and I was caught by the side of the road with the check engine light, the EML light, and the code P0220.
This TBS-reset procedure made my car drivable again, and turned off the EML light so that I could get home. I deleted the code to turn off the check engine light, and it hasn’t returned since (Yet… 190.000 miles after all).

This has worked massive. To my 2004 325 automatic. No throttle no longer like on off switch and mpg has gone up 5mpg and same route

Do you happen to know how to reset brake pressure sensor?
Glad that I've helped you. Regards to the brake pressure sensor, is there a yellow light illuminated on the dashboard? (turns red when handbrake is applied). If so, check the brake fluid level. Could possibly be low or going bad. Also I believe it would need plugging into diagnostics to reset.
or after changing the brake pads you can reset the yellow light by pressing the brake pedal por 30 seconds with the key in the second position or before starting the engine

Glad this helped!. What I would do now is check the actual throttle pedal and make sure it's clean, etc.. sometimes if it get stuck, it can happen while driving so it's definitely worth checking it.

hi jono can this be done on an e46 me smg car?? i get a bit of kangerooing at times and i also feel my throttle response is a little sensitive so was thinking of trying this out if its applicable to my car as well
Works on all E46s, it resets the parameters of the throttle position sensor, etc..

I know this is an old video, but after reading the comments I'm really hoping you can help me. I have a 2006 X5 3.0i. did the CCV and the next day while driving the trans failsafe program came on. Same time code for MAF sensor. I replaced MAF and that code is gone but trans failsafe keeps coming back seconds after starting car. Any ideas? Thanks I. Advance!

Sounds like a communication issue, have you made sure you've connected everything back up? Also make sure to clear the fault codes.

i change my alternator and charge good but if i go for 1 hour my battery discharge ,maybe throttle problem ? any help?
Change battery and see how that goes. Batteries can die during cold weather
I turned the battery and still loses the power while walking, but the alternator indicates that the battery is charging 14.5.When I wait 10 minutes the machine turns on again and again loses power while the battery does not light up the car again.me has left in the street but I changed the battery and the car momentarily switched on. But again it loses its power while walking, but not when the car is standing because it shows that it runs 14.5.maybe mass air flow sensor ?
is it workable on e46 with cable throttle or dbw or both also can?
Faizal Halim pretty sure or only works on Fly-by Wire pedals. You’d need confirmation though.

My rpm keeps jumping up and down like crazy mainly when I got my ac on and I’m in idle, would this help? I have an E90
CJ Carpenter in general when you turn the A/C on, the revs will go slightly higher. But as it's jumping up and down, It sounds like a fault MAF sensor. Try unplugging it to see if it's any different.
I have similar problem with my E46, and also i've noticed turning on the a/c also kills my mpg. I've already cleaned my ICV and rebuilt my DISA valve as well as unplugged and replugged my MAF a couple times during these lil bits of maintenance done so far. I kinda have a hunch its my CCV/ oil separator, but i've yet to do anything to that yet as I lack the time... Any other ideas?

Works on both. All this does is reset the parameters on the TPS because the vehicle learns how you use your throttle if you know what I mean?
I think I know,but if you have some spare time,you can explain it.my problem is that the idle RPMs are to low (only when a car gets to normal operating temp)
Normally they sit between 600RPM - 800RPM Usually controlled by the idle control actuator. Mine generally runs low when warm. However, if it was a rough idle then that's a totally different story.
if it is ICV it would have problems immediately when I start the car,no?this happens like when an engine switches from closed to open loop mode (sensors)...also when I disconnect the TPS idle rise up just a little and dont fall down below again.but I tried another one tps (not new,but in ok correct condition) and the symptoms remained the same.
Hmm, this sounds odd. Do you have access to any diagnostic tools?

Iv heard it’s spark plugs and then someone else told me fuel injectors I have an 08’ BMW 328i sedan it’s going up and down like crazy when I am stopped at stoplights.

Defo icv 👍 don't need to buy a new one just remove old one and spray Gt85 inside it and shake it like mad until it starts to slide free when you shake it then refit 👍
Have you topped the oil up recently? Mine did this after topping up with oil. Mine did the same and ended up being that the oil cap wasn't quite on tight enough.

Nah it means press slightly on the pedal. I held it for 30 seconds total position one 2 and off completely

After resetting the throttle, it's fairly responsive. It's because after time, the car adapts to your driving style and decides on the throttle response. I personally do this reset every now and again because I've noticed after motorway driving, it goes a bit rubbish. Saying that I use cruise control most of the time lol..

With this method the eml light is out. The car was not burning gas while the EML lamp was burning. now he is very good gas. I will try for a few days. I hope the problem is solved. 2000 e46 3.28i.

my bmw 728i , was limited to 140mph. The guy at bmw said go in the glove box , The LRS switch on the laft side , Turn it off , so i did, Now my car is not limited will do 158mph ,but i wont push it anymore than that , Becouse of the tyres . boy its quick ,

Best thing to do is plug it into a suitable diagnostics to see what it says. What sort of problem are you having? Some type of misfire?
Jono's Auto Repairs no misfire the engine work better than before but feel like there's a lot of petrol going in
Check all vacuum hoses for leaks and anything going into intake. Maybe take your spark plugs out? Check for fouling. Search up on Google on a chart on fouling in sparkplugs
