      It was a UNANIMOUS decision for WCW creative to make Booker the champ at Bash at the Beach. It's just that Hogan was using his creative control card so he could win the title and Russo countered Hogan by a "scathing promo".

    Russo did good putting Booker over. Was sick & tired of Hogan taking the spotlight & not pushing new talent. Despite WCW dying & hanging by a thread at least people like Booker & Scott Steiner were pushed

      Hogan not pushing new talent?…I recall Goldberg beating Hogan for the title, and no rematch was ever booked.
      Russo had good intentions of using new talent but failed horribly in his execution. Booking Jeff Jarrett to lay down for Hogan is one example.

    Vince Russo had the balls to give Booker the title the same night Hogan walked out on WCW refusing to job to Jarrett, for that alone he deserves huge credit since the majority of the people would've appeased Hogan giving him the belt at the expenses of pushing new talent, since Hogan had all the leverage and the fanfare behind him, Eric Bischoff included

      @@huzaifa8665 Actually the ratings held firm and began to climb over the summer. Go and look for yourself. By September they were above 3.0 in the ratings and at the lowest were doing 2.6 before Russo left in October.

    My only problem is that once he got to WCW, he stopped having someone to filter his ideas. He had some great ideas and loved a lot of it, but he needed someone to say NO, because not EVERY idea should go on TV, and Vince put everything out there, and so much of it was crap....

    The run with Booker T as the working class, Rocky-style champion was the highlight of Russo's WCW run. Absolutely incredible. Goldberg's ego killed it.

      You can say a lot of negative things about Russo because he was, on balance, a _terrible_ wrestling booker, but to give the devil his due, he was always looking for new stars to make and pushing younger talent, even if not always competently. One of the reasons he was more effective in WWF during the Attitude Era (when he had Vince to filter out his worst crap) was that he tried to make sure everyone had SOMETHING to do, giving the company one of the strongest midcard scenes in the history of the business.

    Booker deserves all the accolades for what he was able to do in that transition from WCW to WWE. I personally loved him in WCW, (minus GI Bro 😆) but everything from WWE and on, man he really came into his own. Even TNA, he did some very memorable work. I mean come on, “black snow”?! On days that I need a laugh I genuinely throw that on and it works everytime. 😂

    One of the greatest moments ever! Everyone was so happy to see Booker get that chance to shine! He was always a huge fan favorite but overnight he became another elite main event top guy up there with Sting, Goldberg, Nash, Hogan, Jarrett, Steiner, Macho. Loved seeing Booker up there. We should have seen more of Booker wrestling all those guys. His style could work with anyone. The crowd reactions in the 90s never lied.

    He was right. Without Russo, Booker wouldn’t have finally gotten to main event status or even gotten the championship. He was held down to mid card status for too long and he had all the talent and capability of a main event headliner at the time.

    Booker Steiner Goldberg in the Main Event for the belt was a year or two late. Mostly because of the Nash and Hogans stopping anyone else scared of losing their spot

    And Russo himself has said that making Booker T the world champion is his proudest moment of his career. For all the criticism he gets & a lot of it rightfully so, Vince Russo also did a lot of great things in wrestling, and giving Booker T the chance to be a main eventer is one of them.

    According to Russo, it was unanimous in a WCW creative committee meeting. They knew before Russo walked into that meeting that Booker T would be the one who they should put the strap on him.

    Hogan tried like hell to block Booker from getting the belt.. The best play would have been for Hogan to put him over! We learned later in life why that would have never happened..

    About the only VR story ive ever enjoyed. Booker T is top 5, dead or alive, on my favorites list. He deserved the title long before he got it, just like Ron Simmons.

    Never been a fan of Russo but I will say him making Booker T the champion was probably the best move he made there at least in my opinion.
