There is nothing sexy about denial.
This is the price of a fancy fur trim.
In 2005, I embarked on my second journey ocean campaigning with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, onboard the M/V Farley Mowat (formerly Ocean Warrior).
I brought a camera to capture the tucked away reality of the Canadian Seal Slaughter (the largest marine mammal execution in the world). Here is some of that footage.
I didn't have a mic to create narration for this video. Vince Tocce helped me edit this down from a combination of a radio interview I gave in Montreal and video tape, (in a day and a half.) I've not been able to stomach the footage to work with it in the intense way that is required in order to edit it into the full length, well- constructed piece that it could be. (If someone out there feels called to put it together, talk to me.)
In Canada, it is still illegal for a person to witness, film or photograph any person engaged in sealing activity without a government permit (which is difficult to obtain.) On this campaign, we were arrested and convicted under the Seal Protection Act... Read that last sentence again. Feel me?
So.
This is the Department of Fisheries and Oceans answer to their own gross mismanagement that caused the depletion/ commercial extinction of the cod stocks. (Seals eat fish which prey upon cod. Check that math.)
This is the way that people who take it upon themselves to witness atrocity are dealt with when it goes against someone's business/ political plan.
This is to what extent entities with vested interest will go to prevent people from seeing and spreading shameful truths.
This is how necessary resistance is shut down and how people who attempt to make steps toward positive change are labelled as terrorists and trouble makers, thereby discrediting individuals and undermining real issues.
In representing Sea Shepherd in the court stands, I saw firsthand some of the inherent biases and loopholes in the judicial system which have the effect of strengthening and protecting the travesties mentioned above.

That's a valid question. The situation was indeed charged due to the context. A couple years later while defending myself and representing Sea Shepherd in court, I found a directory of sealers registered to the Association. I called a few of them up and asked if they would come out to a meal to dialogue directly. The conversation was very powerful, respectful and they both said that they would reconsider sealing the following year without my asking them to.
Did you know the must seal hunter are actually Inuit, who suffered greatly when seal skin and meat values drop. 7 of 10 children would go to school hungry and suicide rate increase thanks to stress put on them. The cost of living in those place is expensive, for a example: a $50 would buy you only small amounts of junk food. The seal population is growing steadily even before the ban and it a better alternative than oil companies coming looking around for oil using a special equipment that harms the seal, which turned them deaf, and driven whales underneath the ice sheet, who will drown in the cold sea.
Again, this references the commercial hunt, and not the indigenous hunt.

I was the first one to arrive on the scene. The sealer raised his hak-a-pik at me, shook it and swore at me. An instrument he had used to kill the animal he was dragging a few moments before.
I had nothing on me besides my camera.
During the entire ordeal, the only punches thrown were from the sealers.

I know here in Ireland seal hunting was legal until the 80s. It was reopened in 2021 to deal with the massive seal population particularly in the south west. Its known as seal culling and the quota is about 10 per person a year unless they're threatening aquaculture ( if so you can cull as many as needed but it's generally only 1 or 2). But we don't overkill like the Canadians do as they are a protected species in Ireland
Seals overpopulated almost everywhere they go. I grew up in lajolla California and at lajolla cove, a place that used to be a booming tourist attraction, was colonized by a group of seals, and a bunch of animals rights groups came together and made them protected so now the population is immense and the entire area is constantly covered with a stench of fecal matter from the rocks they stay on. It's illegal to even swim in their cove now.

When I was 9 I blew out my birthday candles with the wish that sealing would end. That night all sealing was halted indefinitely. I went to bed crying the happiest tears and felt like I was magical.
Humanity took huge steps backwards since I was a hopeful child with harp seal posters on my bedroom walls.

Im sorry to say but here in canada the polar bear population has dropped and there are way too many seals 😟 sadly we have to cull (brutaly kill) hundreds, sometimes thousands of them so artic fish like cod and herring dont go extinct and so they dont become a nucance. Though the way they die is violent its not as bad as things like beef farming where the animals live in pain their whole lives. It is nessasary but cruel. 😤😧😢

Seals are a viable commodity and they should be managed like any other livestock. They provide meat and pelts and most importantly, jobs. As long as the stock population is healthy, I vote to harvest them. These activists are wrong in this case. They are responding emotionally and placing themselves in harms way. If they want to argue, go to court. Interfering with a man’s job could get them seriously hurt. Those sealers don’t look like compassionate types.

Who wears a seal coat….that’s ridiculous. I’ll take a wool coat over a dead animal coat any day. My friend raises sheep for the wool and they don’t kill the sheep to get the wool. We shave them, give them little jackets to wear and when the wool gets long..we shave them again. They are used to be shaved and don’t mind it. She gets more money for the black wool but only has four black sheep. They’re rare the black ones.

Just use artificial fur, some of it looks and feels real, or wool. Or the hair of any farm animal just as long as you shave it off and allow it to grow back.

It keeps me from wanting to visit Canada. I spread the word about it too and keep others from visiting that barbaric country. BTW, I don’t eat anything from the ocean or most other animals, except for chicken but I have been eating less of that too because I find meat to be disgusting these days.

Its virtue signalling charities that latch onto seal hunts for marketing when much more ecologically significant problems are everywhere all over the world. I agree with Sea Shepherd for the most part, but the bit about it not being our place to use animals as resources is incorrect. We are animals ourselves and hunting for our food might seem like nasty business, but it is far more humane than anything you can buy that comes from the meat industry. Don't give me any of that vegan crap, I like meat. A meaty diet is great for our health. This doesn't mean I'm saying we ought to club baby seals for their fur, it just means certain forms of professionally trained hunting for food is justified. Like I said, I agree with Sea Shepherd doing this, though I do have to wonder if they would take up the same sort of opposition to hunters who feed their families and shoot bucks etc in a professional manner and with great accuracy.
Your answer lies in the fact that Sea Shepherd only takes action to oppose the commercial hunt, and not the indigenous hunt.
@@SalaamShalomPeace well, no it doesn't. I wasn't asking if the org itself would ever act against indigenous hunters, it was more of a general question about their own personal moral codes. I have to wonder whether or not they themselves would fare on the side of hunters or if in fact they simply would take a personal disliking towards them due to the fact that well, animals are being killed either way. Obviously Sea Shepherd the organisation deals with whaling, but I wonder if there are any sorts of hunting which they do in fact agree with, or better yet I wonder the same about their biggest supporters. Are these the sorts of folk who call hunters evil bigoted murderers for shooting buck professionally to feed their families, or are they at least able to see that hunting is far more humane than anything that goes on in the pig farms/factories etc. The meat and dairy industry are inhumane and vile and have gotten so out of hand that it is hard to see any way back, but hunting offers people a way to honour the animal they kill and to respect it in a way that most others could never understand, due to having to be the one to kill and prep it yourself.

Lisa Shalom you do realize that most of the people seal hunting in Canada are the Inupiaq and Inuit tribes trying to feed and clothe their families for survival. These baby seals are being clubbed to death, skinned and more often than not thrown back into the water they were pulled out of. We see in Canada these seals less and less. They are raised in fear. And all because they have been doing it for a while and there is a market for their pelts? That is no damn excuse. As a Canadian when I look up "Canadian Seals" I dont want to see only these clubbing videos. Where I witness these poor pups last seconds in life.
