A year ago i was 283 pounds. We also got a dog - a much higher energy dog than we thought she'd be. My husband suggested that we might not be the people for her - we weren't active enough. I loved her so much that I decided to become the person she needed me to be. In less than a year i've lost 130 pounds. Dogs are life changers. Be the person your dog thinks you are!
How great that you rose to the challenge! You turned a potential incompatibility into an opportunity to turn your life around. Congratulations on your amazing achievement. I love your motto, "Be the person your dog thinks you are!"

@@lanalorenzen : Thanks for the info. I’m vegan and an animal lover not to mention a dog lover. My dog has been thriving on a plant-based diet for the past 2 years (me 4 years).

Very inspiring story. As someone who also rescues stray cats and dogs, I didn't just changed their life by giving them a second chance, they also changed mine and give me a much better perspective in life.
RIP Peety. I loved your story. You weren't just a great dog, but you were clearly a wonderful person as well. Eric owes his enhanced quality of life to you. So inspiring. Eric, thanks for sharing your story with us.

Eric, I, too, rescued a dog and she became my life! She brought such joy to me. I certified her as a therapy dog and together we were a certified therapy couple. We visited the residents of a skilled facility for two years. Andie, my dog, made such an impact on those residents simply by laying next to them, letting them pet her as they shared their stories. She died last year and I feel the same way that you felt about Peety. I believe Andie rescued me. I just wrote a book about our journey together titled Finding Andie. I appreciate the love that you shared about Peety. Thank you
That was great advice from his nutritionist. Peety saved his life, and he saved Peety's life. And running a marathon is a great accomplishment for anyone!
BJ L. I agree. Puppies are more work than a full grown dog. And you don’t really know the personality of a dog when they’re just puppies. And unfortunately, often those hellbent on a getting only a puppy don’t know what a puppy can entail (patience, consistency in potty training, etc). 🐾
Amen!!!! I rescue the one or the ones who need rescuing. Kinda how humans want to adopt babies while soooo many children aged 5 to 15 need rescuing more than the 3 years old and under. My heart has ALWAYS gone out to the "underdog", so you speak. I was always the last one picked for everything. So I know the feeling and they are my first choice. The ones nobody else wants are THE ones that I want.
😢 Peety looks to be a Border Collie or BC mix. Love Border Collies. . . all dogs really! Very moving story of a man went to rescue a dog and they end up saving each other.❤ I know it has been 8 years since Peety crossed the bridge, but Peety is still touching hearts.❤
Sooo inspiring! So sad that Peety died, but you gave him a wonderful life while he was with you and he gave you a whole new life! Now, you are giving another wonderful shelter dog a wonderful life and he, in turn, will keep you fit.

Me too. I was rescued by a 1 year old dog who got lost during a hurricane. We saw each other and that was it. She-take me, take me home and I- I will take care of you. I was headed for the West Coast to Camano Island and my newly acquired dog Heidi just sat on the middle seat (utility box) in my Jeep and off we went. She sat, watched the road, ate and slept with me and always wagged her tail when I woke up in the am. To shorten the story somewhat, we went to Germany together and was totally loved by my friends, even understood "Komme her", We lived in Mexico by the beach for two years and my sweet dog walked the beaches, went for swims, chased off pelicans twice her size and started to understand some Spanish words. My Heidi was the best friend I ever had and was with me for 13 years when her heart was just giving out. She literally crawled to my side and I got on the floor and held her while she took her last breath. It's been 9 lonely months. I admire you Eric to have taken the steps to adopt to lose weight for the both of you. You accomplished it and your dogs live a healthy and happy life with you. I hope I can stop at a shelter sooner than later and free one lonely dog to be with me again also.
"I am going to miss my connecting flight because you're too fat." One could take this comment as being very rude. However, this story proves words of encouragement come in all different forms. If that passenger had not said that, would Eric have gone on living the same lifestyle and died? Then Peety would have probably died alone and Jake would never have been part of Eric's life. One comment and three lives are positively affected. Very powerful.
I watch this while my fur buddy is laying next to me. We try to walk most days but I'm lazy. My pup couldn't care less if we walk, I do though. Dogs are man's best friend for a reason. Thank you for sharing this video. I have seen it in the past but it's always good to watch again. Definitely pulls at the old heart strings for sure.
I have seen this several times and still cry. I've grown up with a lot of dogs, and loved every single one in their on unique way. But one I have now; she and I have a bond like no other. She is getting old and we have had a few scares. Life is fragile. Take care of you're pets. When my Honey dies, so will a piece of me. Make sure to give your pet the best life they can have
Growing up I had a number of difficulties in life. Being born premature, having severe social anxiety and being bullied. My doctor told my mom to get me a dog but my dad always said no. When I was 17 we got the best friend I ever had in my life can his name was pepper. He was a Havanese Bichon. He was more full of love and joy in life than anyone I've ever known. He taught me what a real friend was. When I'd come home he was always there to kiss me and get me to stop crying. He passed in March 2019. He was the best friend I ever had. Months after he passed away my brother waa still hurting he said "i don't want a dog, I need a dog" then we got our new baby Alfie. He was born one day before my Pepper passed. We always say Dogs are a gift from God. I'll never forget Pepper and how he got us over my sister passing away suddenly in 2013. I love you pepper you'll always be my favorite dog.

I just finished reading your book - the Spanish edition - while my students of Spanish read silently during class. I got to when Peety died and of course cried. My dog is 12 and losing her hind end, so Peety's passing is a raw spot for me.
Great story : dogs are such lovely animals, they give us so much affection. Comparing to humans, who are not even able to respect one each other. Thanks God for having created animals.
A gift for you all; Peety, Jake, & Eric. Truly sorry for your loss Eric. It is a "Spoken Word Poem" in honor of Preston our beloved 16+ years old Tibetan Spaniel who was an unbelievably amazing, exceptional, and proud animal who passed away from cancer in Oct. 2022. The Poem has never been sold, nor paid for, as it was a gift given to us from Preston. It is all Preston, I just wrote it down on a piece of paper while going through similar events. Your Heart Grows By: David O. Roberts Just when you thought the worst was at hand. There you stand, and your heart grows. Just when you thought that you did not need a friend. There they stand, and your heart grows. Just when you thought it would be too much trouble to care for them, too much trouble to show them the right way, and too much trouble to love them. There they stand, and your heart grows. There they stand waiting and watching for your every movement, hanging onto your every spoken word, watching your every gesture; even trying to anticipate your every wish and thoughts that you may have had about them, or for them. There they stand, and your heart grows. People say, well it’s just a pet. Well, it’s just like any other person’s dog, it’s just another animal that you will have to take care of and do everything for. There you both stand, and your heart grows. You wonder what, when, where, and why you would need or want such companionship to feel any kind of emotions that you may feel right now. Then, there they stand, and your heart grows. They wait for your guidance, for your every move, your commands, your discipline, and your love and affection. And in return, not only do you receive everything that you have given to them; but what you may have needed in return also, and so much more. Then, there you both stand, and your heart grows.
I just finished the book, "Walking with Peety." There is so, so much more to this story! It's too bad this video wasn't 30 minutes long; it didn't hit the really high points, either. Mr. O'Grey doesn't mention the fact that his health changed dramatically (as well as Peety's health) after they both went on a food regimen completely free of animal products and oils. O'Grey had to learn an entirely new way of thinking, eating, and living. He had to do these things while also caring for Peety. I highly recommend the book. Though I generally shy away from an author and a co-author, O'Grey provides the story while his co-writer, Mark Dagostino, provides the writing. They truly are, in the best sense, co-authors of a life worth living.
Hi Eric, What a great journey you and Peety shared. I admire you and Peety for what the two of you achieved. I also miss my Frasier a lot. He knew all my stories, he was my true best friend. We traveled the world together. It's been several years but I find it hard to get a new dog, maybe I am not ready just yet. You and Jake keep it going, you're in my mind.
I LOVE THIS STORY. But I also love the fact that Peety saved his life, once he pulled out of his hole, it was time for him to go... and now.. this new dog will lead the rest of the way... dunno if I explained myself, but I think this story es beyond poetic to me. P.s: I also believe they saved each other. ;v;
Incredible story!! I feel the same about both my dogs. They have changed my life for the better. Unconditional love I have never received from a human. For the people that hopefully accidentally clicked dislike, you don't have a soul if you can't love an innocent animal that will love you more than it loves itself.
You can rescue even in a rental. Pick a smaller dog. They are spunky, spirited, great watchdogs, and if you give them exercise there is no barking or annoying behavior. Just downsize. Go get yourself a life buddy!
I love this story. I keep watching this video. I'd love if I could be saved by a shelter dog, after loosing the love of my life 3 years ago.. I can't live without her. Maybe another pet dog, a needing, I shelter fog could help me.... 😢
From one marathoner with rescue dogs to another - thank you for rescuing Peety and Jake and for sharing your story with the world. You are an inspiration!
I just didn't realize how much my beautiful cat was grieving when we moved and he lost his home and his friend, the cat next door. When we moved again he disappeared after a few weeks, never to be seen again.
Great Story !!!! Nowadays more and more people, good people are finding out how special dogs really are. Around here we know what they are and they are more then friends they are our guards, protectors where ever we go.
We have had two rescue dogs and each one has given us more love and devotion than was imaginable. We share your amazement at how the rescued and the rescuer are mutually benefited. We will continue to provide a loving home for other adopted dogs as long as we can. Your's is truly a love story! Thank you for sharing it.

I just finished reading your book - the Spanish edition - while my students of Spanish read silently during class. I got to when Peety died and of course cried. My dog is 12 and losing her hind end, so Peety's passing is a raw spot for me.
😢 Dogs wrap themselves around our hearts. May your memories help soften your loss.
I read your book in two days. I cried like a baby. Cried for you and Peety. Amazing story. Thank you for writing your story❤
Beautiful story of just how humans and dogs can impact each others lives in an amazing way. Rest in Peace Peety
It's even better that he adopted his companion! :)
Great story : dogs are such lovely animals, they give us so much affection. Comparing to humans, who are not even able to respect one each other. Thanks God for having created animals.
😢😢😢😢😢 Well done bro ☺ One thing didn't get smaller from all the exercising, your heart. Damn man 💜
A gift for you all; Peety, Jake, & Eric.
Your Heart Grows
By: David O. Roberts
Just when you thought the worst was at hand.
I'm so sorry and your poem was beautiful ❤
Petey was beautiful - you both were lucky to have each other. Thank you for sharing your story.
I'm sorry 😢
I LOVE THIS STORY.
But I also love the fact that Peety saved his life, once he pulled out of his hole, it was time for him to go... and now.. this new dog will lead the rest of the way... dunno if I explained myself, but I think this story es beyond poetic to me.
P.s: I also believe they saved each other. ;v;
happens every single time I re-watch this: tears of joy
Peety sent you Jake because he knew he was the dog you needed.
Oh this is so perfect! Most people once they get sick they abandon their dogs. :(
Hi Valia! Love your channel.
Incredible story!! I feel the same about both my dogs. They have changed my life for the better. Unconditional love I have never received from a human. For the people that hopefully accidentally clicked dislike, you don't have a soul if you can't love an innocent animal that will love you more than it loves itself.
beautiful. I will be rescuing a dog once I have my own place
You can rescue even in a rental. Pick a smaller dog. They are spunky, spirited, great watchdogs, and if you give them exercise there is no barking or annoying behavior. Just downsize. Go get yourself a life buddy!
WOW! I'm crying too. This is such a wonderful story of health, life, gratitude and love. Thank you for our animal shelters around the country.
I'm a big guy n im crying like a lil baby right now....Peety is an Angel I need me a Peety :(
That story made me cry animals are our life.. Peety was beautiful. Happy for your new one
I love this story. I keep watching this video. I'd love if I could be saved by a shelter dog, after loosing the love of my life 3 years ago.. I can't live without her. Maybe another pet dog, a needing, I shelter fog could help me.... 😢
This is just one of many reasons you should own a dog! #PeetyRescuedEric
😢
Great Story !!!! Nowadays more and more people, good people are finding out how special dogs really are. Around here we know what they are and they are more then friends they are our guards, protectors where ever we go.

Except the best/good quality dark chocolate, which is quite beneficial.
Beautiful story. Dogs are so amazing and special. RIP Peety.
Excellent story, excellent film. And Eric -- you and Peety rescued one another.
