This is what happened when I planned a wild camp on the Isle of Arran at the last minute and then forgot to check my gear list. Even after 40 years I can still make some rookie mistakes! Evening Andrew. Only just got around to watching this video. Made a few co*k ups myself over the years. You do learn quickly though 😂. Thank you for you kind words of support. Of course 43 years ago you’d have had no sleeping pad, no phone and no drone, but not only did you survive, but you enjoyed yourself enough to still be doing it 43 years on.
You pulled that one back from the brink without any drama + good man. And good man for reaching out to Paul Messner. It's a tough world at times and easy to get swallowed up by it

It’s so annoying when you forget something. I have a couple of list sheets I’ve laminated, which I check the night before. Not only does it help me to pack everything, but also helps prevent overpacking. Great video. Arran looks so beautiful. Cheers 👍
I have laminated sheets too. Guaranteed not to forget anything and we all know what packing can be like.

Gave me a good wee laugh this, Andrew. And we've all been there! A couple of years ago we had an exceptionally hot summer here in Norway, and I was planning on pitching my tent on top of a local mountain. However, the dried out ground gave absolutely no support for the tent pegs, so I re-packed my backpack and found a nice, green lawn in lower terrain. It's all about adjusting, I guess. Thanks for another great video. :-)

I've only had my UA-cam account a handful of months, and haven't even hit the 500 subscribers mark yet, but I've already had a taste of the pressures that can arise as a result of sharing videos, and the questions it can make you ask of yourself and your hobby. It's definitely one to be careful with, and I think it's really important to make sure that your own enjoyment comes first. I'm glad you're still going Andrew - always a pleasure to watch 👍

I have never ventured up Glen Rosa and your wee video highlighted its many scenic splendours. I was over on Arran 2 weeks ago for an overnighter. I was cycling on the Brompton and camped at one of your spots at Newton Point. It was gorgeous. I cycled back by The String, then the ferry back over. It was well-worth getting away though the Brompton is not best suited to cycling The Bougallie and String. An auld codger like me has to push when the going gets tough.
Aye me too, all my mates have gone e-bike and it looks inevitable for me shortly ! Well done on the circuit though !
I just came across this film, loved it and now subscribed to your channel. Some great filming and wild camping, and the mistakes are much more interesting than when everything runs perfectly 😉 But I totally empathise with the feeling of forgetting vital equipment for intended plans - the amount of times I've forgotten the wrong charging wire or brought the camera with no SD card in it! Or was sure tge tent pegs were in the bag (partly why I bivvy - keep it simple!) Guess it's a bit simpler filming most stuff on my phone too! And good shout out to Paul, I've got nothing but respect for his honesty and it's so important to mentally recalibrate when you start feeling pressure to go in a direction which takes you away from the life you love. I totally celebrate particularly men opening up and expressing these sorts of feelings. Having lost my brother to suicide, I so wish he'd been able to talk about stuff when it all got too much. So much strength and worth in Paul's message for all of us, even those of us who aren't making any money from youtube.

Great video Andrew. It just goes to show the planning involved in an overnight camp, and how one or two basic errors can drastically impact in your plans or enjoyment. Good to see you made the most of it though. 👍
I’m going hillwalking in the morning. I’ll be sure to double check my gear before I go, after watching your video. Btw, 40 years ago I borrowed a tent from a friend and headed off to Glencoe without checking it. As I tried to pitch it I discovered I had no poles or pegs. And it was chucking it down. A very wet night I still remember well 😂
Nice job Andrew Sir.. nothing worse than forgetting things. I always used to do it. Now I have full check off list whiteboard when packing. When it goes in the bag it gets checked off. Takes the thinking and the stress out of packing. Well worth doing. Love the black Diamond tent. Saw someone on an Iceland trip with one. Very interesting design. Good on you Sir. Be safe out there. Took me over 10 years of extremely hard work to survive the hardest battle of my life....
A full on mental, and physical burn out...was suicidal and psychotic many times...
Now ,. Fingers crossed I'm on an even keel...
So....share it. Talk about it. Normalize it.

I know the feeling Andrew; I forgot my pillow on my Dartmoor Wild Camp (and that is after checking my gear into my BackPack) lol. As for your comment in regards to doing solo wild camping; I personally like my own company and even though I'm very good at interacting with folk, I purposely go out not to find people but to find myself! Always been a loner in my personal life, and my wife is happy for me to have me time! Great video m8 and I'm sure Paul will find himself! I decided to start back into Wildcamping after leaving such since my young years; because of life/work taking over! No more at 60 years of age, I work but also now take time out for myself and use UA-cam as a Diary only of my trips and free Cloud storage of my exploits. I'm happy to share my exploits but would never trust UA-cam Algorithm to supply me with the money to live on or spoil my wife. Paul Messner is a brave man, and I wish not only him but all those out there who choose to trust their financial futures to an Algorithimn that can change in its purpose at any time. Liked and Subscribed

I currently don’t use a sleeping mat in order to keep the weight down, and because I roll off them in the night anyway. So I use my backpack and some clothing on top as a pillow. Recently I completely the Ridgeway from Avebury to Tring.

Haha! you're not alone. I've been hiking and camping for 40 years (only) and just this summer I drove 4 h into the mountains, all dressed up and geared up, only to find out I forgot MY HIKING BOOTS !! 🤣 I had only low sneakers on. Where I was going, neither my feet nor the sneakers would have made it. So, I had to abort immediately. Thanks for sharing!

If you ever forget your mattress again you can always go old school and dig a hip hole, doesn't have to be very deep and if you are careful you can easily replace the turf.
Hello Andrew from NZ ,Forgetting gear is one thing But remembering it and still not able to use it is another. I had occasion to abandon a trip once ,after I had got to my destination, put down my bag and unpacked, went for a short walk (5 hours) came back and found that mice had got into the food bag and had a good go at everything in it, including the tea bags. There was no point in staying couldn't salvage a thing what with 'poo and wees' and that smell of vermin that accompanies it. So wild campers 'beware'. A nice touch about Paul. Cheers from NZ.
Well done considering you forgot some gear, you did well. What a beautiful area to camp in and achieve some great drone footage, I get away camping on my motorcycle a lot in Cornwall, I always forget something, a good shout out regarding Paul , respect to that, all the best Andrew 👍

Brilliant relaxed video, the irony is Nicol that runs Glenrosa campsite you were on often has left over gear from not so responsible campers which I am pretty sure he would have given you a kip mat and helped you out with other bits and pieces.

its nice to know we all make mistakes first time me and my lad climb mount Snowdon half way up I realised had forgotten the sleeping bags
we all done it mate, at my very first mountain bike packing adventure, i forgot my TENT, had to buy a cheap one from argos nearby town (lucky it was in stock!)
There are things called universal cables which are charging cables with three ends. Micro usb, USB-C and apple lightning. If you keep your battery in a pouch with one of those cables you will never be stuck like that again. Anker do a good one, though it is about £15.

I once brought the wrong gaz for the stove I had so went to to Loch Trieg pick up the little sticks and head to Stoinaig bothy, picking up more sticks to cook with! So it does happen. Nice for Paul.

Oh my! I bought the same tent two years ago. Used it once, never used it again… that thing is a condensation trap like I’ve never seen before. I used it on a week trek in deep woods. When I woke up every morning I was swimming in condensation with no way to get rid of it. My down quilt would not dry up. I had to cut my trip short. I finally gave it to my 6 year old grandson to play with in the yard. At least HE had fun with il! But the trekking poles were good though!
Yes I can imagine it would be a nightmare in these conditions. I'm tending to use it in dry windy hill days and as a result it's worked better than expected. However it was humid or still I swap it out for another tent.
Sounds like you had a bit of kit-brain-fart there! Glad it all worked out ok and your drone still had some puff in it for those beautiful aerial shots.

I returned from camping yesterday and my self inflating mattress is going straight in the bin and I am getting a £20 camp bed from Halfords.
My phone lasted 3 days so I can sympathise totally with you. Been camping over 50 years now.

I always looked across to arran when I was driving to Glasgow from cairnryan. It’s quite a large island. I always thought it looked nice from the mainland but its s much nicer location than I imagined. I haven’t been camping in about twelve years. Last time camping was in Dorset. But i do hope to ho camping some weekend this summer. I live in the north of Ireland. We have had a really miserable start to the summer weather.

Your misfortune reminds me of how glad I am for writing down my often-teased lists, and triple checking them--once, for when the item is in the "camping pile," once, when it is packed, and once, when it is in my vehicle. I'm nearly 67 now, so I can relate to your dismay. By the way, my list notebook also has the section marked, "Things I Forgot." So, in spite of all my planning and preparations, some things have not made it to my lists. Like I've said many times in my life, "It keeps me humble!"

What a beautiful spot to camp. Once forgot the fuel canister for my stove. A friend of mine once forgot his walking boots - discovered after a five hour drive to the start of the walk. More dangerously been in a group where someone forgot their raincoat on a five day walk.

Lovely drone footage, I love Glen Rosa. Stating the obvious here mate, lists!!! Draw up a checklist. I reached my nadir when I was spooning out boiling pot noodle with a debit card. Forced myself to draw up a kitlist after that......it works.
Ive got a kit list taped to my gear cupboard, still an eejit :-)

Did you have a mat 43 years ago? I didn’t. The key is to spread the support for the torso to prevent pressure points. On a beach, it’s easy to shape a hip hole and this works really well. I woke to a bloke shaking me because he thought I might be dead! On a groundsheet, I use spare clothes to create a ridge to support the small of my back. Pre Goretex, I had enough spare clothes to make a pillow as well. These days, I use a mat but, in summer, that’s just a torso sized piece of foam and accept any help I can get from the turf. I’ve had my share of stupid mistakes, too. E.g. arriving at the Fords of Avon to find I’d left the tent pegs behind. Luckily, they’d done up the refuge because the night reached -7C.

I've been doing this for 40 odd years too and I've never forgotten anything. Ooh look, a flying pig! You don;t see them that often... It is annoying though.
My last camping trip I forgot sleep mat, bag and pillow. Slept fully dressed with a wool blanket I keep in the car..... expensive day out in Kendal the following day.
Nice video and yes, I’ve left stuff behind too but I now print off a list and religiously tick it off before I leave. I’m fact I’ve another list that I check before I leave the car such as hide valuables, Vaseline to my heels, etc and the last one is to lock my car keys in the internal zipped pocket of my rucksack.
Despite all of that three weeks ago I managed to walk half a mile up the Langstrath Valley before I realised I’d forgotten my trekking pole which was in the boot of my car.
This getting old is a pain sometimes. 😊

I remember once forgetting my fuel for my canisterstove, I was 12 miles in and was late, just pitched my tent and realised I'd left it, ate cold dehydrated beef stew that nigh, wasn't pleasant but managed 😂
I agree what you said regarding Paul Messner. Most people who have experienced anything like that will be able to identify with Paul. We all wish him well.
Hmmnn...If I recall correctly, Mr Park, your first wild camp was with me on Beinn Bhreac above Loch Lomond when we were both 15. Used your Ultimate tramp tent, woke up to thick mist and ended up melting snow from an old snow patch for water. Mind you, that was a few years ago - so my memory might well be playing up...

Ahaha yup. I’m having a chuckle at that but hey we were carrying a tent once split between us and genius here brought all the important bits, very careful and all… so organized! Finally evening comes, and after a bite to eat it’s time to make a pitch deep in the forrest - and only one thing was missing. We go back and forth. “you don’t have it?” …”no I don’t have it?” …”you’re sure?” ...”Nope, don’t have it”… ….bloody tent poles! Yup, kind of important :-)

Never been to Arran. It looks like a I really should. The day we become perfect and error free, it the day we become robots and appreciate nothing.
You should definitely try to get to Arran. There is a direct train to the ferry from Glasgow Central.
I stayed at that camp site last year on my DOFE gold and the midges and ticks are awful there

Belts and braces approach can be handy sometimes. I’ve let myself run out of charge and it’s a horrible experience. My ‘proper’ camera ran out of juice as soon as I got to Pollok Park and I was forced to find out how good my iPhone13 was at video. Amazingly good as it turned out. I now carry two charge banks and so many cables I feel like an electrical shop. Even more stuff to remember and to lose😂. I think we could all feel Paul’s angst. Sharing it with us and knowing we are all behind him is probably helpful. PS Enjoyed Goatfell, Arran myself on Saturday and temporarily lost my camera before I got back to Brodick. Not safe to be let out !
I’ve been wild camping since 1965 and still do it,oddly Arran was the very first week of wild camping apart from Loch Lomond being a first night🏴🇫🇷🏴

I recently got caught out bike packing. My exped mat had popped a while ago and I fixed it but it failed again on the first night. Should’ve just chucked it in the bin and got a new one before the trip. I had a small £5 multimat sit pad which I had under my hip but had four night of shocking sleep and discomfort. Then had to cycle 50 miles every day. Was fun ha…I think there’s a lot to be said for a fail safe foam mat. Not having anything at all is heinous I must say, hope you didn’t suffer to much man! 🤪
Wow, have no clue where U're @, but the background scenery is awesome. Nice drone, I always prepak my drone in2 a single pak. Nice shots of yur trip 2 France, especially the church, which is beautiful. Ever considered putting photo on a photo bank. People will your awesome photography work, especially the mother nature scenes. From watching yur vdo, U have fantastic sceneries. Thx 4 sharing on Utube.

Thanks Rodney, it worked well in all the times I used it , it was generally fairly breezy so condensation was not a major issue thankfully.

One of my passions is motorcycling, I taught others how to ride for about 10 years, gave that up due to not wanting to ride so much in my spare time. Whatever it is, if you turn your hobby into a job, you'll lose the interest in that hobby over time.
Thats kind of a paradox...at 58 years old, for the very first time I had the experience of "If you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life" .....I found that you will absolutely work ....your ass off most of the time. But its not connected to the hour of the day, or the amount of hours worked in a day....nights weekends and holidays be damned. It's kind of a disconnect from time and compensation associated with it.
@@nedanother9382 Henry Cole once said something similar, he messes around with automobiles/motorcycles/tractors/junk everyday but he hasn't actually worked a day in his life. He makes most of his money via his TV production company I'm sure so not the average Joe is he.
