I agree. The wonderful hiking trails, drone shots and stunning scenery are fabulous. On the other hand, the distillery visits are the highlight of your channel for me. More whisky recommendations please!
I learned about the Highland Clearances in primary school. I home educate my own kids now and taught them all about the clearances. Scottish history is a passion of mine and our kids need to know what made us who we are.
The clearances are a shameful chapter in Scottish history, not unlike the potato famine in Ireland that happened around the same time. This period in history is not covered extensively in schools. It was ethnic cleansing and conducted in a brutal way. Whole communities wiped out together with their local culture and language.
A wonderful video !!! Living in the USA, I know I will never be able to go to Scotland, so it is amazing to watch your videos. You have a beautiful narrating voice.
@frednorman1 Money would be the main reason. I've had 5 knee surgeries, 3 level spinal fusion in my neck, a heart attack, herniated disc in my lower back. I am retired now.
sorry to hear that, it can be expensive to do this trip especially when retired, I retire next year so i know it will be different, but the vlogs are great, hope you can make it one day
A short story Ruth: 41 year ago i was on Kintyre to spent my holyday in Carradale. Offcourse i had to go to the local pub every evening😊, so i met a guy from Arran. He allways crossed the bay over to the same pub in Carradale with his own boat. He told me, if i would i could came to to fisit Arran and he lend me and my wife his car. So i could drive the day around the island, witch we did. After i brought the car back to his place, i asket him what the costs where, or what i goold do in return, and he didn’t let me pay for anything not even the boat crissings. That… Ruth was amazing for me, and i will never forget that wonderful experience. So this film of Arran is bringing so many memories… and still thinking how lucky we where. And next i will watch your film of Kintyre ofcourse. Thank you so much for the plessure i had on this film❤
We learned nothing about Scottish history in school. The curriculum was all about the Industrial Revolution and romans. It was not until I left school that I started to find out about my Scottish history. It was quite shocking to see what had happened to the people of Scotland. Great to find out more ❤️
I was never taught about the Highland Clearances at school but have read many books on it and saw the effects of it while living in the Outer Hebrides. I was struck by the events in the Battle of Sollas, also known as Blàr Sholais, a rebellion against the Highland Clearances that took place on August 2, 1849 in the Sollas district of North Uist where 700 tenants were cleared.

husband speaking age 81 - an excellent story of Arran and many beautiful scenic views. I usually do not look at other viewers comments more than 3 or 4 as I really don't care unless the story is very interesting and I would like to see others comments. Many comments on how well you speak and it is like you pronounce each word so precise. Doing a long dialog by yourself is not an easy task since you don't want to keep pausing while you think of what to say next. It was 2 pm on Sunday May 26th and raining again in Wash. State U.S. when I started your story. A very nice way to pass a dreary day. Thank you for your adventure made just for us.
When we were there last year we saw Otters every day. We were camping at a site called Seal Shores - on pitches really close to the beach. We watched a Mother Otter teaching her pup how to hunt - it was fantastic. A couple of miles or so walk along the beach and we found a Seal Haulout area. It was really amazing to see the seals individually balanced on top of the rocks. They almost looked like half moons as their bodies were arched on the rocks.

They have the regular ferry MV Caledonian Isles ferry in dry dock that will not return to service till the Autumn, due to a rotten hull . They need to replace a lot of steel on the hull of the vessel . You where correct, you boarded the MV Isle of Arran a 40 your old vessel that has been used on the Islay route. I know about the Highland clearances because I used to be a genealogist, specialising in Scottish family history - and have strong Scottish roots myself. One of my 2nd cousins lives on Arran. She moved there from England a few years ago. A fab video - thank you. ❤
Finally arrive in your beautiful country. Third trip , my son and I picked up our camper van in Aberdeen and are headed up the east coast to Orkney. Thanks for your videos
How have you found using a camper van to get around, and is there enough room in it for both of you to sleep comfortably? I'd like to visit with my family (3 of us) and Ruth's sold me on the campervan!
@@sandhyapapineau4008 for the two of us so far it’s fine. We are spending one night in Orkney in a Band B. But all in all it’s fine. Getting used to some the smaller roads in Scotland and Orkney. That I got used to pretty quickly
A beautiful place. I lived on Arran in the early 2000s for about 6 years. I lived first in a cottage in Lamlash for the first two years and then a tiny cottage on a farm in Sliddery. One of my favourite places on the island is Machrie Moor and climbing the Saddle via Glen Rosa. I still miss the island even now some 16 years since I left.
Hi Ruth, as always, a pleasure to watch your travels.Great scenery, superbly shot, think you would put the BBC to shame with your professional footage. Thanks for sharing.Neil.x😊
Ruth really reminds me of the Lonely Planet hosts I used to watch when I was young, she would have been my fave if she was on back then. I can't believe she films this all herself!
Hi Ruth, Arran looks like a great place, my brother and his wife go there often, another youtuber, Eddie Burns did the glen rosa hike. I really must get over there myself, I'm not a whisky drinker but the sausage rolls look good.
Thanks for the tour. You're annunciation is excellent making it easy for a guy in Canada to understand you despite the Scottish accent. Not too much whiskey, lovely lassie.
I’m West Coast central belt and adore Arran …. the one thing i couldn’t quite grasp is why this lady has a pure super heavy Glasgow Uni accent which only became really prominent around 2017 by 17yr old males and females . Its a dialect not from these shores. Other than that it was quite informative
Hope you got a chance to go to Dunoon , very close to Gurock. I lived there in the late 80’s and thought it was so pretty! Beautiful woodlands and walks along streams with ferns all along the walls of the creek side. I treasure my memories of Dunoon.
Many many years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Arran, from Bute and the method of travel to get there was on The Waverly, a fantastic experience to say the least. Fantastic video btw.
So glad to see this Video, I am planning a trip to Arran next week, 🏴. I had a student trip in October 95, the distillery had just opened and I can’t wait to have a return visit. Only problem I don’t drink anymore. 😀
Thank you from a South African. Three of my grandparents were Scottish. I actually have a picture from the Isle of Arran, taken in 1913. My great-grandparents would go there for their annual holidays. I believe it was a haven of happy memories. Many of the young men who would wait for an invitation to join would have been killed in WW1.
Ruth, I think the amount of editing contained in your videos is exceptional and I for one am extremely grateful for taking us along to all these wonderful places. Well done from my Narrowboat lurking somewhere quiet on the English canals. 😊
We were there a couple of weeks ago - 24 degress C and wall to wall blue skies. I could live on Arran. Did you miss the Library in the Woods? Or are you saving it for another video? It's truly amazing.
In answer to your question Ruth, no, we were not taught anything about the clearances when I was at school in the 1950s. At the time there was a deliberate policy from Westminster of not teaching Scottish pupils of anything that might be considered anti-English, including much of Scotland's history and the Gaelic language. We learned nothing about Bruce or Bannockburn but plenty about Alfred burning his cakes and Harold getting an arrow in his eye at the Battle of Hastings, nothing about the covenanters or the corruption that led to the Scottish Parliament passing the Act of Union in 1707
We learned a lot of Scottish history at school in Stirlingshire in the sixties. Our school was actually on the field of Bannockburn and our history teacher told us about the battle as if it were taking place right in front of us. I’m always sad that other school pupils didn’t have the same experience.
Done Arran at least six times in the car and by motorbike. Saw most of what is in this episode, it's a great wee island and so accessible for me. One day while sitting on a rock admiring the coastline. An otter came ashore making it's way towards me, unaware of my presence. At the same moment a car stopped sharply on the road nearby, out jumped a woman shouting otter!!!. Never saw the creature again....😮
Fantastic wee video Ruth! The first time I was in Arran ,I was 21, in 1989. The next time I went was 2012 with a friend and we walked most of it; we went up to the old farm with the standing stones, and camped overnight there. Loved this video you were all the places I have seen, and brought some great memories back. You're a breath of fresh air Ruth, and am now hooked. I now live in the Scottish borders, which is also beautiful, but do miss the west coast as i'm originally from Glasgow; though I stayed in Kilmarnock for many years. Anyway keep up the great work young lady ; loving your videos. God bless!
Oh WOW Ruth this was such an amazing trip that brings back many memories as well. Thank you for sharing your accomplishment of climbing Goats Fell. My son traveled from Michigan to do the same in 2019. I remember visiting Arran as a 10 year old girl meeting cousins for the first time in Ardrossan (we stayed at their home) and while on the ferry a submarine came up beside us. The whole boat was in awe! Later, I found out they did drills in that area of the sea? from a relative there. I was hoping to get over to honor my 60th birthday this year (and 50 years since being in Scotland) but I keep having home repairs that are eating my funds. Now, I can visit through you!
Very impressive young woman & wonderful tour guide. No words wasted with cliches or BS, just information & delivered with a lovely voice. A fantastic walking companion.
I love this channel you are such a sweet person your videos are amazing and also like myself you are Scottish enjoying watching all your videos working my way through them.
Where to begin! Arran is my happy place in Scotland. I camped there just a week ago at Lamlash. Those sausage rolls are amazing but, sadly, I was there on a Wednesday and the Pier Tearoom is closed that day 😢the museum is just a great little place and VFM at a fiver. Regards the clearances, I was taught about this at school but I think it’s a generational thing because I am old 😂
Hi Ruth I was raised in Ardrossan and spent many a summer in Arran ( lamlash) in a scout hut Brandyburn cabin . I believe it’s long gone now. I never learned anything about the clearances but it was spoke about by locals when we went over. Great video.
Scotland is dotted with interesting islands, especially the IsIe of Arran. I want to try cheese, oatcakes, and sausage rolls that suit my tastes, and Beam, which I drink to manage my health. I'll buy this right away, There was also a sad incident on the Isle of Arran, but it's a wonderful island and I want to go there, Thank you Ruth-san for introducing me to such a wonderful island and I wish you good luck on your future travels.
Thanks for all the insights about Scotland’s remote islands. Went to Edinburgh in 2019 and want to explore the Highlands. I’m Just an American here in California., so it’s a long way. But it’s on my bucket list. Someday.
Hi Ruth! I'm from the USA and we learned about the highland clearances in our history classes in 10th grade in high school. Also, I wanted to thank you for turning me on to Nitework. I love them!
At the factory I work at they use PPM (Parts Per Million) for quality control. Our goal is 50 ppm. The Scot's really love their whiskey, At Jack Damiel's distillery, any whiskey loss via aging in barrels is called the Angels cut.
Whisky distillery cabinet…LOL…love it Ruth. My wife and I are watching and enjoying your latest episode. We are visiting Ireland in September and then heading back over to Scotland as well. The Isle of Arran has been an Island we would love to visit so thanks again for this Introduction!
So impressed by all your videos Ruth. Last year I visited Fingels Cave, Mull ( and large sea cave!)+ Skye for a week of waterfalls walks + Iona. Arran looks well worth a visit thanks for your tour!😊
We drove up to Ardrossan to go over from Newcastle to do some fishing . I managed to get a massive Stauner in L;amlash just off the pier some of the locals said it was the biggest one hey had ever seen !!
Hi Ruth just watched your Video whilst having breakfast on holiday in Lochranza been coming here since I was 11 years old and am now 67. I wish I was younger as am waiting for a new hip and have osteoarthritis I cant get around like I used to so watching your Video is a delight. Keep up the excellent work
Miss Ruth, I just love your enthusiasm! It is so refreshing & a wee delite to enjoy! By the way, do you know what Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny & a Smart Blonde all have in common? It's all make-believe!
Ruth, thank you so much for publishing prices in American dollars as well. I know that they are just estimates, but it is so helpful to us over here. I have "liked" about 3 or 4 of your presentations so far, and just hit the subscribe button today. I am also ordering a Fair Island Sweater because of you. Your filming style has a way of making us feel that we are right there with you. To us, you sure do talk funny though. ...(Just kidding!!! If you don't know already, Americans LOVE your accent. It's so warm and friendly.) Great job!
I am loving your videos! AMAZING! You deserve all the best things in the world. Robert the Bruce is in my ancestry lineage so that was really cool to see the cave. I just found your channel this morning and have been binge watching all your videos!
Hi Ruth, loved your video. I was there about 18 months ago and did very similar things. Arran is a great place to get away from the crowds and it’s so accessible being closer than the other islands to the central belt. Enjoy your week. 😊x
The place you are parked at around 28:00 is where I would stop for a drink every day when I had to cycle from Lochranza to Brodick for work when I lived on Arran. The hill just before it on the way back every night was murder (the Bougille)
Excellent. I'm going on my 57th visit to the island next month with an American friend. An idea for another video would be Glen Clova, Glen Doll. Not so very well known area, Loch Brandy is nearby, some amazing cliffs in the area.
I'd appreciate interviews with one or two of the locals on some of these islands. It'd be interesting to hear how they came to live there, occupation, etc.
Thanks for the feedback. I have tried to do this sometimes but I’ve found it quite tricky to find people to agree to be on camera… especially as there will be a large number of people who likely watch the video.
@@ruthaisling That kind of exposure is just what people in tourism businesses crave. And as a former journalist I can assure you that it is commonplace to pay for interviews as well.
I didn't go to school in Scotland but I learned of the Highland Clearances as part of a British history class back in the 70s. In elementary school, we learned of the legend of Robert the Bruce and the spider, it was a morality lesson for us. I would be surprised if kids are taught any Scottish or British history today. Thanks for the great video.
I loved the Arran hikes. I sensed you were a little tentative meeting the collies - a reaction to your bad experience? I hope you and pooches can become friends again. I look forward to your next adventure.
EE have the contract for the emergency services , so is the best network in Scotland... Outer Hebrides was very patchy in 2019 , but going there this year it was brilliant as EE had been putting up masts to fullfill there contract... I use 1P mobile which uses EE as its carrier..
Your story about the spider is very True, l remember that story as well, I'm glad you remembered that story, ... enjoying your videos Immensely they are very interesting.
The spider story that you were talking about is down in the south of Scotland l don't think it's on Arron, but I could be wrong cause I've been down to whare Robert the Bruce's cave is in south of Scotland.
I'm surprised about the presenter not knowing about the clearances. It may be a generational thing, I was born in the 1960`s in Glasgow and I learned ALL about the clearances, as school children we were very well versed in this part of history. Our books were Scottish and written by Scottish people. I learned almost nothing about English history except when it intersected with Scotland. I also learned extensive information about WW1 and in fact went on a school trip to Belgium to visit the WW1 memorial sites, one boy in our group took a photo of the Menin gate of his grandfather's name who had died in Belgium, he was the first member of his family to visit.
Why nobody has head hunted you as a presenter professionally is beyond me, an absolute natural. Enjoyed so much, Thankyou.
That’s so nice of you to say, thank you!
I reckon Ruth is happier being her own boss having her own link on YT and earning more money than being a TV presenter. What say you Mr Parkinson?

Thank you from a South African. Three of my grandparents were Scottish. I actually have a picture from the Isle of Arran, taken in 1913. My great-grandparents would go there for their annual holidays. I believe it was a haven of happy memories. Many of the young men who would wait for an invitation to join would have been killed in WW1.
Wow that’s so lovely! I love looking at photos of my family from those days too!
Ruth, I think the amount of editing contained in your videos is exceptional and I for one am extremely grateful for taking us along to all these wonderful places. Well done from my Narrowboat lurking somewhere quiet on the English canals. 😊
Wow, thank you for the kind comments. Enjoy your narrowboat trip!
Enjoyable and informative video, as always. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and adventures Ruth. 😊
Thanks Dan! Glad you enjoyed the video! ❤️
Hi Ruth. Sent you a recent email via your website. 👍🏻
We learned nothing about Bruce or Bannockburn but plenty about Alfred burning his cakes and Harold getting an arrow in his eye at the Battle of Hastings, nothing about the covenanters or the corruption that led to the Scottish Parliament passing the Act of Union in 1707
Your so right I was in school in the 60s never taught any Scottish history not even rabbie burns it was deliberate not to teach Scottish history
We learned a lot of Scottish history at school in Stirlingshire in the sixties. Our school was actually on the field of Bannockburn and our history teacher told us about the battle as if it were taking place right in front of us. I’m always sad that other school pupils didn’t have the same experience.
@@rosemarymee I was taught Scottish history either it was wrong not teaching own history
@@albertreynolds9287 Do you mean you “weren’t “ taught Scottish or you were?
@@rosemarymee yes I wasn't taught Scots history lol typing error
Great video! your videos are so interesting always having all the possible things you can do wherever you go! So cool!
Thanks for watching!
I grew up watching the sun set over Arran.
Beautiful! 😍
Thank you Ruth, I love your videos, your accent plus your love of whiskey.
Ahhhh no at least you got to see it briefly!
Ruth is back!! Fabulous videos, Ruth! I will visit Scotland one day!! God bless
Happy to hear you will visit someday!
Very impressed by the professional editing: lots of interesting camera angles, drone shots, informative overlays and maps. Cheers from Seattle!
I now live in the Scottish borders, which is also beautiful, but do miss the west coast as
i'm originally from Glasgow; though I stayed in Kilmarnock for many years.
Anyway keep up the great work young lady ; loving your videos.
God bless!
Thank you so much 😊 I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
It sounds like you have great memories from there! I hope you can visit again sometime soon! 🤞
Very impressive young woman & wonderful tour guide. No words wasted with cliches or BS, just information & delivered with a lovely voice. A fantastic walking companion.
Wow, thank you Mick!
Lived for 6 years in North Ayrshire and enjoyed many a visit to Arran. Fun to see you highlight this gorgeous island.
It’s a lovely place! 😍
queen of campers, a credit to all campers so educational really worth watching these videos. thank you God Bless.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you! I hope you can try all the food from the island sometime! ❤️
There’s just something cool about putting your car on a ferry and enjoying the sights while onboard traveling on the water. Great video. Cheers Troy 😊
Thanks Troy!
@@ruthaisling your welcome
Thanks for all the insights about Scotland’s remote islands. Went to Edinburgh in 2019 and want to explore the Highlands. I’m Just an American here in California., so it’s a long way. But it’s on my bucket list. Someday.
You won’t regret it 🙂
Hi Ruth! I'm from the USA and we learned about the highland clearances in our history classes in 10th grade in high school. Also, I wanted to thank you for turning me on to Nitework. I love them!
I love Niteworks too!
Don't remember being taught about the clearances.
Hope you have great trip to Ireland and Scotland!
Ruth, Arran is my favourite island.I would love to live there. Thank you for this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So impressed by all your videos Ruth. Last year I visited Fingels Cave, Mull ( and large sea cave!)+ Skye for a week of waterfalls walks + Iona. Arran looks well worth a visit thanks for your tour!😊
I hope you manage to visit Arran!
I hope so too... depending on when next I visit from my home in Sydney, Australia!
Love your videos Ruth plus you love Japan my youngest daughter is obsessed with Japan she speaks at bit too thank you for sharing your fab videos ❤️
That's awesome!
We drove up to Ardrossan to go over from Newcastle to do some fishing . I managed to get a massive Stauner in L;amlash just off the pier some of the locals said it was the biggest one hey had ever seen !!
What beautiful land to explore 😊 Thank you, Ruth 😊
I've just realised that I have watched this twice. that's how bad my memory is 😆
13:00 you can make a document offline in a google docs :)
I was on Arran for a week years ago, and loved every minute of it. I’d love to go back.
Hi Ruth just watched your Video whilst having breakfast on holiday in Lochranza been coming here since I was 11 years old and am now 67. I wish I was younger as am waiting for a new hip and have osteoarthritis I cant get around like I used to so watching your Video is a delight. Keep up the excellent work
That’s lovely that you are on the Isle of Arran now! I hope you have a great time there and your hip replacements goes well. 🙏
I see Arran every day from Irvine if I do say so myself Ayrshire is a beautiful place to live (minus the crime rate lol)
Thanks so much William and glad to hear the USD conversions are helpful!
I am loving your videos! AMAZING! You deserve all the best things in the world. Robert the Bruce is in my ancestry lineage so that was really cool to see the cave. I just found your channel this morning and have been binge watching all your videos!
I once went round the Ailsa Grag on the Waverley with lots and lots of people, and there was thousands of seagulls on the rock.
Hi Ruth, loved your video. I was there about 18 months ago and did very similar things. Arran is a great place to get away from the crowds and it’s so accessible being closer than the other islands to the central belt. Enjoy your week. 😊x
Thank you for watching! Sounds like you had fun exploring Arran 😊
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Ruth that's brilliant. Take care. Tom.
Thanks for watching, Tom!
29:53 you adventures go to mountain corbett. i'm never seen before. you made it to the top that stone Goatfell. i'm so proud you. congratulations.
Thanks!
I loved the Arran hikes. I sensed you were a little tentative meeting the collies - a reaction to your bad experience? I hope you and pooches can become friends again. I look forward to your next adventure.
Yes! There were about 6 dogs and I think I only managed to get a few of them on camera!
Thanks for remembering the distilleries!
How could I miss them?!
Cool whiskey "glove box" in the van. I have to get another van. They are the so "go anywhere anytime vehicle."
Yeah they are great. I use mine as my main vehicle too.
