I learned about the Highland Clearances in primary school. I home educate my own kids now and taught them all about the clearances. Scottish history is a passion of mine and our kids need to know what made us who we are.
The clearances are a shameful chapter in Scottish history, not unlike the potato famine in Ireland that happened around the same time. This period in history is not covered extensively in schools. It was ethnic cleansing and conducted in a brutal way. Whole communities wiped out together with their local culture and language.
A short story Ruth: 41 year ago i was on Kintyre to spent my holyday in Carradale. Offcourse i had to go to the local pub every evening😊, so i met a guy from Arran. He allways crossed the bay over to the same pub in Carradale with his own boat. He told me, if i would i could came to to fisit Arran and he lend me and my wife his car. So i could drive the day around the island, witch we did. After i brought the car back to his place, i asket him what the costs where, or what i goold do in return, and he didn’t let me pay for anything not even the boat crissings. That… Ruth was amazing for me, and i will never forget that wonderful experience. So this film of Arran is bringing so many memories… and still thinking how lucky we where. And next i will watch your film of Kintyre ofcourse. Thank you so much for the plessure i had on this film❤
I’m West Coast central belt and adore Arran …. the one thing i couldn’t quite grasp is why this lady has a pure super heavy Glasgow Uni accent which only became really prominent around 2017 by 17yr old males and females . Its a dialect not from these shores. Other than that it was quite informative
We learned nothing about Scottish history in school. The curriculum was all about the Industrial Revolution and romans. It was not until I left school that I started to find out about my Scottish history. It was quite shocking to see what had happened to the people of Scotland. Great to find out more ❤️

Thank you Ruth - I've only just come across your videos. Wonderful, you are very, very good at getting across the aspects that matter on your adventures. At 75 you've given me a push to get on and do my own exploring. Thank you and take care.

husband speaking age 81 - an excellent story of Arran and many beautiful scenic views. I usually do not look at other viewers comments more than 3 or 4 as I really don't care unless the story is very interesting and I would like to see others comments. Many comments on how well you speak and it is like you pronounce each word so precise. Doing a long dialog by yourself is not an easy task since you don't want to keep pausing while you think of what to say next. It was 2 pm on Sunday May 26th and raining again in Wash. A beautiful place. I lived on Arran in the early 2000s for about 6 years. I lived first in a cottage in Lamlash for the first two years and then a tiny cottage on a farm in Sliddery. One of my favourite places on the island is Machrie Moor and climbing the Saddle via Glen Rosa. I still miss the island even now some 16 years since I left.
I am always inspired to watch Ruth's Adventures because it should called Ruth's Ruthless Adventures with all the uncertain obstacles you have encountered to bring us content.
I will not be visiting Arran until they have sorted out the ferry issues . They have the regular ferry MV Caledonian Isles ferry in dry dock that will not return to service till the Autumn, due to a rotten hull . They need to replace a lot of steel on the hull of the vessel . You where correct, you boarded the MV Isle of Arran a 40 your old vessel that has been used on the Islay route. A much smaller ferry than the normal ferry. They should have a new vessel in service on this ferry route later in the year , known as the Glen Sannox , but I will believe it when I see it in service. Too many delays and false hopes with that new ferry. Another great video from you, thanks.
When we were there last year we saw Otters every day. We were camping at a site called Seal Shores - on pitches really close to the beach. We watched a Mother Otter teaching her pup how to hunt - it was fantastic. A couple of miles or so walk along the beach and we found a Seal Haulout area. It was really amazing to see the seals individually balanced on top of the rocks. They almost looked like half moons as their bodies were arched on the rocks.

Where to begin! Arran is my happy place in Scotland. I camped there just a week ago at Lamlash. Those sausage rolls are amazing but, sadly, I was there on a Wednesday and the Pier Tearoom is closed that day 😢the museum is just a great little place and VFM at a fiver. Regards the clearances, I was taught about this at school but I think it’s a generational thing because I am old 😂
Hi Ruth, Arran looks like a great place, my brother and his wife go there often, another youtuber, Eddie Burns did the glen rosa hike. I really must get over there myself, I'm not a whisky drinker but the sausage rolls look good.
I know about the Highland clearances because I used to be a genealogist, specialising in Scottish family history - and have strong Scottish roots myself. One of my 2nd cousins lives on Arran. She moved there from England a few years ago. A fab video - thank you. ❤
Thank you from a South African. Three of my grandparents were Scottish. I actually have a picture from the Isle of Arran, taken in 1913. My great-grandparents would go there for their annual holidays. I believe it was a haven of happy memories. Many of the young men who would wait for an invitation to join would have been killed in WW1.

Many many years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Arran, from Bute and the method of travel to get there was on The Waverly, a fantastic experience to say the least. Fantastic video btw.

So glad to see this Video, I am planning a trip to Arran next week, 🏴. I had a student trip in October 95, the distillery had just opened and I can’t wait to have a return visit. Only problem I don’t drink anymore. 😀
Wow I am so glad I found this channel. I find it hard to express how wonderful and educational this is for a Canadian who had no idea Scotland has so many wonderful islands. So many fascinating places to visit. I am very ill with end stage pulmonary fibrosis and your videos are a highlight of my day. I am so glad you are travelling enjoying life and staying safe. I wonder if you ever thought of taking a wee puppy along with you. Take care Dr. Holly from Ladysmith
I am a Scot on both sides of my parents although it’s my dad’s side that I have the most connection with. My Grandparents and my dad and uncle’s moved to England for work so I grew up in England. My Grandfather hated to see me growing up in England and so he would fly me to Scotland during school holidays. My uncle would pick us up at the airport and then drive us to my great Aunt’s house in Maidens, a gorgeous little fishing village where I would spend hours on the beach investigating wildlife. You can see the Isle of Arran very clearly from Maidens…
@ruthaisling I think the restaurant might be newish as I was visiting there from the age of 9/10 and that was like 1988 until about 1998. When I used to stay there, there was a pub obviously 🫢 which my Grandad and Great Aunt would drag me to and there was the bowling green that my Aunt attended religiously and a small shop. My Great Aunt Jamison used to go to Aire to get anything more than absolute essentials. Now I have been looking into my lineage Clans and tartans and all that juicy stuff and I found my Great Grandad had Tunnock as part of his name and whenever I visited Scotland my family would pile me with Tunnock biscuits and I was starting to think that there was a connection 🫣🤭 so please assure me: is everyone in Scotland mad for Tunnocks or was it an obsession of my family? I must say I thoroughly enjoy your videos maybe you could make a visit to Maidens and show some of the fantastic veiws☺️🌟
Very impressive young woman & wonderful tour guide. No words wasted with cliches or BS, just information & delivered with a lovely voice. A fantastic walking companion.
In answer to your question Ruth, no, we were not taught anything about the clearances when I was at school in the 1950s. At the time there was a deliberate policy from Westminster of not teaching Scottish pupils of anything that might be considered anti-English, including much of Scotland's history and the Gaelic language. We learned nothing about Bruce or Bannockburn but plenty about Alfred burning his cakes and Harold getting an arrow in his eye at the Battle of Hastings, nothing about the covenanters or the corruption that led to the Scottish Parliament passing the Act of Union in 1707
We learned a lot of Scottish history at school in Stirlingshire in the sixties. Our school was actually on the field of Bannockburn and our history teacher told us about the battle as if it were taking place right in front of us. I’m always sad that other school pupils didn’t have the same experience.
Done Arran at least six times in the car and by motorbike. Saw most of what is in this episode, it's a great wee island and so accessible for me. One day while sitting on a rock admiring the coastline. An otter came ashore making it's way towards me, unaware of my presence. At the same moment a car stopped sharply on the road nearby, out jumped a woman shouting otter!!!. Never saw the creature again....😮
So impressed by all your videos Ruth. Last year I visited Fingels Cave, Mull ( and large sea cave!)+ Skye for a week of waterfalls walks + Iona. Arran looks well worth a visit thanks for your tour!😊
This was great. My mum and her family spent summer holidays on Arran in the 1930s, so lots of the place names were very familiar to me though I haven’t been there…yet😊. Thank you…made my day
Ruth, I think the amount of editing contained in your videos is exceptional and I for one am extremely grateful for taking us along to all these wonderful places. Well done from my Narrowboat lurking somewhere quiet on the English canals. 😊
Hi Ruth just watched your Video whilst having breakfast on holiday in Lochranza been coming here since I was 11 years old and am now 67. I wish I was younger as am waiting for a new hip and have osteoarthritis I cant get around like I used to so watching your Video is a delight. Keep up the excellent work
You asked about history in school, my take is that a lot of gas lighting has taken place over the years as far as Scottish and particularly highland history goes. Yes it's true, the old phrase "history is written by the victors" but we now have so much more detailed investigation and research but we are slow to change history books and other official commentary. The clearances, despite denial were a genocide plain and simple. Back in school in Inverness in the 80's we had a teacher who deviated from the curriculum and had lots of history projects for us including WW1. Quick note on boots, Scarpa leather "attack" boots were my go to for hiking in the highlands for over 15 years. Nowadays mostly hiking in Canada I've switched to Salomon quest 4D.
Hope you got a chance to go to Dunoon , very close to Gurock. I lived there in the late 80’s and thought it was so pretty! Beautiful woodlands and walks along streams with ferns all along the walls of the creek side. I treasure my memories of Dunoon.
Hi Ruth, loved your video. I was there about 18 months ago and did very similar things. Arran is a great place to get away from the crowds and it’s so accessible being closer than the other islands to the central belt. Enjoy your week. 😊x
Whisky distillery cabinet…LOL…love it Ruth. My wife and I are watching and enjoying your latest episode. We are visiting Ireland in September and then heading back over to Scotland as well. The Isle of Arran has been an Island we would love to visit so thanks again for this Introduction!
Ruth, Ruth, Ruth: To start off with. I swear you become more beautiful with every video. I will stop there, I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable. This video is as always , crazy good. One of my favorite foods are sausage rolls, especially Scottish ones. Your reaction to tasting the one you had was priceless. WOW! You have the ability to bring out so many emotions. You are a joy. I see the number of comments keeps going up. I will attempt to lessen my future remarks. Till then, be safe.
Hi Ryan's mam Sam commenting... I loved this you did such a good job I live in whiting bay and most videos made from Arran seem to skip Whiting bay as not much happens but we have some beautiful walks 😊 plus I did not know that they was another Distillery in Lagg 😮 so thanks for that 😊
Thanks for the tour. You're annunciation is excellent making it easy for a guy in Canada to understand you despite the Scottish accent. Not too much whiskey, lovely lassie.
My grandfather and his forbears lived on Arran in Lamlash. His father had a bicycle shop on the main road across from the shore. It is now a B&B. He moved to Portsmouth during WWI to become a riveter on the warships being built there. I visited the Isle back in 2004...Unfortunately the B&B was fully booked so I couldn't stay in the ancestral house! I decided that one day I will move back to Arran from the US when my time is up! It is heaven on Earth.
Excellent. I'm going on my 57th visit to the island next month with an American friend. An idea for another video would be Glen Clova, Glen Doll. Not so very well known area, Loch Brandy is nearby, some amazing cliffs in the area.
Love your blogs. You bring back so many memories of my rough camping days in the Highlands with my lovely Sheltie. Later i did many diving trips and live aboard trips on both West and East coasts. Now i live in Thailand, so i miss the the Highlands and Islands. Your distillery visits are a bonus. Single Malts are wonderful. The diversity of flavours is amazing. Very limited choice of malts in Thailand, and they are heavily taxed. Still i have my memories and your videos.
I didn't go to school in Scotland but I learned of the Highland Clearances as part of a British history class back in the 70s. In elementary school, we learned of the legend of Robert the Bruce and the spider, it was a morality lesson for us. I would be surprised if kids are taught any Scottish or British history today. Thanks for the great video.
I'd appreciate interviews with one or two of the locals on some of these islands. It'd be interesting to hear how they came to live there, occupation, etc.
Thanks for the feedback. I have tried to do this sometimes but I’ve found it quite tricky to find people to agree to be on camera… especially as there will be a large number of people who likely watch the video.
@@ruthaisling That kind of exposure is just what people in tourism businesses crave. And as a former journalist I can assure you that it is commonplace to pay for interviews as well.
I am loving your videos! AMAZING! You deserve all the best things in the world. Robert the Bruce is in my ancestry lineage so that was really cool to see the cave. I just found your channel this morning and have been binge watching all your videos!
Many thanks for the visit to Arran. One tip: you can make a Google doc available off-line by locating it in Google Drive and checking under the 3 dot menu. It works for any file you have in Drive.
The place you are parked at around 28:00 is where I would stop for a drink every day when I had to cycle from Lochranza to Brodick for work when I lived on Arran. The hill just before it on the way back every night was murder (the Bougille)

You are so very good at this. I am a New Englander with roots in Scotland and using your tours to accompany my books for self study. thank you so much.
Hi from Australia! Thank you for your tour of the Isle of Arran - most interesting and enjoyable. My parents brought us to Australia in 1961, when I was 13. We lived in Edinburgh, and I have very vague memories of a holiday on Arran when I was about 3 or 4 or 5 years old. We stayed at Whiting Bay and went on a walk and got lost - has to make our way though some marshy land, as I recall, with mum carrying my baby sister! I have no recollection of being taught about the clearances in primary school in Edinburgh.
I loved the Arran hikes. I sensed you were a little tentative meeting the collies - a reaction to your bad experience? I hope you and pooches can become friends again. I look forward to your next adventure.
When I visited Scotland in my wee motorhome I was told to get an EE SIM as every other network was so patchy. EE was pretty good everywhere. When I got back I switched from O2 to EE permanently.
Part of the problem with potholes is when they are "fixed" they just dump the material in and compact it but leave the underlying issue so when they come back it's often with an even bigger hole. Traffic is also much heavier and higher volume than it used to be so with satnavs telling drivers to use the wee roads to avoid traffic the amount of upkeep and repair work is spread even further.
@@lizzy-wx4rx I've had someone knock my door and refuse to believe I live there because their stanav told them they'd arrived at the house they'd used the postcode for not realising that the further out of towns you go the bigger the area it covers. Technology should be used as a tool or aid rather than the sole source. My cars built in satnav is muted and only rarely used for directions, its a map.
Can confirm that the view from the top of Goatfell in good weather is stunning - my first time was also in heavy clag so I came back a couple of years after - managed the round trip from Brodick (on foot the whole way) in about 3.5 hours or so... but I was a LOT younger then :)
Agree. Our club climbed it two or maybe three years , coming down by the back of Brodick castle. The huge rounded boulders at the top are stunning. I got a beauty of a picture from the top that the Herald used so I was dead chuffed! I lost my expensive DJI gimbal-mounted camera along the sandy seashore as we walked back to Brodick. Sweated how I was going to break it to my wife who bought me it: then another hiker presented it to me as we waited for the ferry!

I know that place! Great seafood restaurant there
@ruthaisling I think the restaurant might be newish as I was visiting there from the age of 9/10 and that was like 1988 until about 1998.
Enjoyable and informative video, as always. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and adventures Ruth. 😊
Thanks Dan! Glad you enjoyed the video! ❤️
Hi Ruth. Sent you a recent email via your website. 👍🏻
Very impressive young woman & wonderful tour guide. No words wasted with cliches or BS, just information & delivered with a lovely voice. A fantastic walking companion.
Wow, thank you Mick!
In answer to your question Ruth, no, we were not taught anything about the clearances when I was at school in the 1950s. At the time there was a deliberate policy from Westminster of not teaching Scottish pupils of anything that might be considered anti-English, including much of Scotland's history and the Gaelic language. We learned nothing about Bruce or Bannockburn but plenty about Alfred burning his cakes and Harold getting an arrow in his eye at the Battle of Hastings, nothing about the covenanters or the corruption that led to the Scottish Parliament passing the Act of Union in 1707
Your so right I was in school in the 60s never taught any Scottish history not even rabbie burns it was deliberate not to teach Scottish history
We learned a lot of Scottish history at school in Stirlingshire in the sixties. Our school was actually on the field of Bannockburn and our history teacher told us about the battle as if it were taking place right in front of us. I’m always sad that other school pupils didn’t have the same experience.
@@rosemarymee I was taught Scottish history either it was wrong not teaching own history
@@albertreynolds9287 Do you mean you “weren’t “ taught Scottish or you were?
@@rosemarymee yes I wasn't taught Scots history lol typing error
100* accurate about the potholes. Nearly wrecked my 4*4. Cost over £1K to repair. Won't be back to Arran.
You can blame the Westminster's (de-funding) wrecking ball for that. The pot hole problem is a problem everywhere, Scotland, England, and Wales.
Ahhhh no at least you got to see it briefly!
Oh, the more I watch the more I want to spend months road tripping in Scotland! I’ll get there eventually!
Please visit sometime!
I grew up watching the sun set over Arran.
Beautiful! 😍
There’s just something cool about putting your car on a ferry and enjoying the sights while onboard traveling on the water. Great video. Cheers Troy 😊
Thanks Troy!
@@ruthaisling your welcome
So impressed by all your videos Ruth. Last year I visited Fingels Cave, Mull ( and large sea cave!)+ Skye for a week of waterfalls walks + Iona. Arran looks well worth a visit thanks for your tour!😊
I hope you manage to visit Arran!
I hope so too... depending on when next I visit from my home in Sydney, Australia!
Spectacular! Another addition to my bucket list. And the dogs were friendly😂
Thank you! Haha they were friendly! phew!
I thought ‘The Highland Clearances’, were something to do with the ‘January Sales’ at The Kilt Shop. 🏴😜
This was great. My mum and her family spent summer holidays on Arran in the 1930s, so lots of the place names were very familiar to me though I haven’t been there…yet😊. Thank you…made my day
Thanks for watching, hope you can visit sometime!
Ruth, I think the amount of editing contained in your videos is exceptional and I for one am extremely grateful for taking us along to all these wonderful places. Well done from my Narrowboat lurking somewhere quiet on the English canals. 😊
Wow, thank you for the kind comments. Enjoy your narrowboat trip!
another vid ive already seen popping up on my feed, but its ok, its like watching it new again
Hi Ruth just watched your Video whilst having breakfast on holiday in Lochranza been coming here since I was 11 years old and am now 67. I wish I was younger as am waiting for a new hip and have osteoarthritis I cant get around like I used to so watching your Video is a delight. Keep up the excellent work
That’s lovely that you are on the Isle of Arran now! I hope you have a great time there and your hip replacements goes well. 🙏
You want to see something that will leave those lovely views for dead, then go to South Island N. Zealand as the views there will blow you away.
Lived for 6 years in North Ayrshire and enjoyed many a visit to Arran. Fun to see you highlight this gorgeous island.
It’s a lovely place! 😍
Reading the comments below, they say it all and the only comment I could add is to; keep up the good work young lady! Brilliant stuff.
Thank you!
My home 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed the island.
What a great place to live! 😍
Hope you got a chance to go to Dunoon , very close to Gurock. I lived there in the late 80’s and thought it was so pretty! Beautiful woodlands and walks along streams with ferns all along the walls of the creek side. I treasure my memories of Dunoon.
Ruth, Arran is my favourite island.I would love to live there. Thank you for this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Ruth, loved your video. I was there about 18 months ago and did very similar things. Arran is a great place to get away from the crowds and it’s so accessible being closer than the other islands to the central belt. Enjoy your week. 😊x
Thank you for watching! Sounds like you had fun exploring Arran 😊
Whisky distillery cabinet…LOL…love it Ruth. My wife and I are watching and enjoying your latest episode. We are visiting Ireland in September and then heading back over to Scotland as well. The Isle of Arran has been an Island we would love to visit so thanks again for this Introduction!
Hope you have great trip to Ireland and Scotland!
Brodick castle garden is so cool.
Don't remember being taught about the clearances.
Thanks for watching and glad to hear you are enjoying the videos! Even though that was a unusual sausage roll it was really great!
Arran certainly has everything,,,, including huge portholes
😂😂
Hi Ryan's mam Sam commenting... I loved this you did such a good job I live in whiting bay and most videos made from Arran seem to skip Whiting bay as not much happens but we have some beautiful walks 😊 plus I did not know that they was another Distillery in Lagg 😮 so thanks for that 😊
Thanks for the tour. You're annunciation is excellent making it easy for a guy in Canada to understand you despite the Scottish accent. Not too much whiskey, lovely lassie.
Thanks for watching from Canada!
Wow what a lovely story and thanks for sharing. I hope you can visit the BnB next time!
Thanks Ruth that's brilliant. Take care. Tom.
Thanks for watching, Tom!
Ruth thank you very much for your videos. I went online after seeing your dram purchase to find something similar, rock on.
Thanks for remembering the distilleries!
How could I miss them?!
Cool whiskey "glove box" in the van. I have to get another van. They are the so "go anywhere anytime vehicle."
Yeah they are great. I use mine as my main vehicle too.
Many of the people ended up on Cape Breton Isle. It’s very Scottish. I love the oat cakes there.
Excellent. I'm going on my 57th visit to the island next month with an American friend. An idea for another video would be Glen Clova, Glen Doll. Not so very well known area, Loch Brandy is nearby, some amazing cliffs in the area.
I'm Australian ,and we learnt about the clearances in our history classes .
That’s interesting to know, thanks for sharing!
So glad you are enjoying them! Where in Thailand do you live? I've spent a lot of time there over the years.
Inland from Pattaya. Nice countryside to walk my 8 dogs every day. Away from the resort madness. Been here 18 years.
Thanks for sharing!
Very impressed by the professional editing: lots of interesting camera angles, drone shots, informative overlays and maps. Cheers from Seattle!
Ruth is back!! Fabulous videos, Ruth! I will visit Scotland one day!! God bless
Happy to hear you will visit someday!
Totally agree you would be an amazing TV presenter.
Thank you for your kind words 🙏
I am loving your videos! AMAZING! You deserve all the best things in the world. Robert the Bruce is in my ancestry lineage so that was really cool to see the cave. I just found your channel this morning and have been binge watching all your videos!
Many thanks for the visit to Arran. One tip: you can make a Google doc available off-line by locating it in Google Drive and checking under the 3 dot menu. It works for any file you have in Drive.
Scarps are Italian. I use mine intone winter and have Merrill’s for summer.
The place you are parked at around 28:00 is where I would stop for a drink every day when I had to cycle from Lochranza to Brodick for work when I lived on Arran. The hill just before it on the way back every night was murder (the Bougille)
I've visted Scotland 20 years ago drove around it and I went to kintyre very beautiful. I'm from southern NewZealand the scottish part of NZ and I learned about the clearences. My grandmother is from clan Graham
The stones feature in the film holding back the night ..
My favorite scotch is Lochranza Reserve, I am definitely putting this on my list of islands my daughter and I are going to visit.
You are so very good at this. I am a New Englander with roots in Scotland and using your tours to accompany my books for self study. thank you so much.
I’m glad the videos are helpful!
I’ve just found your channel and am addicted! What a great teacher and videographer. You describe the areas beautifully! Thank you from the 🇺🇸!
Welcome aboard and hope you enjoy the videos!
I loved the Arran hikes. I sensed you were a little tentative meeting the collies - a reaction to your bad experience? I hope you and pooches can become friends again. I look forward to your next adventure.
Yes! There were about 6 dogs and I think I only managed to get a few of them on camera!
That's an interesting point about satnav--never thought of that! (Why does technology always seem to have these unintended downsides??)
Interesting, thank you for sharing this information!
I have noticed you really enjoy eating, I love that. I am half Irish and half Italian so food is a big part of my life, I love to cook.
Yes I love trying different foods when I’m out and about. 😋
29:53 you adventures go to mountain corbett. i'm never seen before. you made it to the top that stone Goatfell. i'm so proud you. congratulations.
Thanks!
I’ll need to plan another trip sometime so I can see the view for myself! 😍
