A unique style of comedy from a very peculiar guy! God bless him! Nonstop laughter! | The character of Emo Philips is widely known for his unique look and onstage antics, appearing as a fidgety, possibly mentally disturbed, nervous but highly intelligent individual obsessed with coleslaw. Philips constantly moves throughout the routine, often shifting from sitting to standing positions, wandering from end to end on stage, playing with his hair or clothing, or going as far as to partially undress as he delivers punchlines. His comedy, which is largely self-deprecating and ironic, is often delivered in a modulated falsetto. His look (occasionally described as geeky, disco and vaudeville-inspired), particularly his hair-a 1970s-style bob with straight-lined front fringe-has been a signature part of his appearance and act for most of his career. - Wikipedia
I'm only 4 minutes in and I'm beginning to think he never plays the trombone - but carries it and keeps dropping it on stage the whole act because he's awesome
I first heard of him when "E=MO squared" came out (late 70's? Early 80's?). Had the big black vinyl disc 33rpm of that album. Licorice pizza as you would say. Lucky enough to catch him in Oahu maybe 93 or 94. He fiddled with the trombone throughout the set, taking it out of the case, fumbling around with the parts while delivering his humor, completely assembling it to only eventually disassemble it and JUGGLE the three parts of a trombone. Mind you (not a musician) the three parts are the horn part (BIG), the slide part (BIG) and the tiny mouthpiece maybe as big as a big grape. He freaking expertly juggled these three parts. Two giant things and one tiny thing. One more story from that show because it was so damn funny. I was smart enough to sit back from front row. You are BAIT to a comedian in the front row. He saw a couple and asked "Are you married?" they said yes. He asked "How long?" they said "8 years". He asked "Any children?"" they said no. He said "Try flipping her over" and then ran away to the other side of the stage as if the guy would come after him. There is no one like Emo. This video did not have a per-recorded laugh track. I like Chappell, Jeselnik, Louise CK. Actually Ricky Gervais is great but listen to the reaction to the crowd. A master of the surprise ending (Like Jeselnik).
6:00 My favorite Emo line: "A lot of you are probably worried that.......................I'll reproduce." Who can get more laughs with a 2-word punchline?
Amazing set! Different vibes in 2019 if played in a room of people lmao, but the crowd there even booed which I've never seen before. He's extremely talented!
To his credit... he didn't mind onbe or two booed jokes and keeped on telling his routine like nothing happened. good control of the situation i must say
@@pfolsom1337 same! He still has it! We were chanting his name and clapping when he was done. Then when Weird Al came out he said "it's always nice to close a show for Emo"
GOOD STUFF KEEP FINDING GOLD LIKE THIS OH PLEASE.... I just realize I capped that meh I meant that all shouty sure why not where am I oh Its Emo I am tired of being the guy saying hey this guy is funny then I show my friends and or whomever and they are all like mehh the 80's seems like a time of wonder and other worrying things
One of the greatest unsung comedy performances of all time
Never heard of him in all my years of watching all comedians, but this guy is definitely all original and one for the books! :-)
8 met him back in 84 he was a great guy. We drank a couple of beers and told each other a bunch if jokes. It was greeat!! He's a great guy
@@michaelfornell4467 You lucky dog!
That coffee enema joke really got people on his side - can't believe this is almost 40 years old, these jokes are just as funny today.
This guy is a comic genius!
Saw him live twice many years ago. When he comes out and gets started he's startling looking and sounding but soon realize he is comic genius.

Saw him open for Weird Al

Chicago Symphony Center
Both did great
6:00 My favorite Emo line: "A lot of you are probably worried that.......................I'll reproduce."
Who can get more laughs with a 2-word punchline?
Here is another famous 2 word punch line from Emo: "I'm a great lover.....I bet".
The man's a legend!
Holy Moly!!! What a gem of historical comedy!
I just want to hear him play that trombone...
Go for it , MO
13:24 Emo might be the only comedian who suppressed booings with moaning.
Amazing set! Different vibes in 2019 if played in a room of people lmao, but the crowd there even booed which I've never seen before. He's extremely talented!

I just saw him last week and he KILLED. got a standing ovation
He was far ahead of his time.
@@pfolsom1337 same! He still has it! We were chanting his name and clapping when he was done. Then when Weird Al came out he said "it's always nice to close a show for Emo"
They felt more like "oh my god did he just go there?!" boos rather than "I'm deeply offended" boos. Shock not disgust. A sign of a great comedian imo
I want him
this is great
A TRUCK!!! love this guy
I saw Emo in 2006. His jokes have lost momentum. But here...absolute master.
Back before the internet when you could go around the country telling mostly the same jokes.
A man who is brilliant and also lost his mind. I totally relate.
the best
This is like giving someone who's tripping on acid or ecstacy a trombone and watching what they do with it
2:54 he just nails it
Genius
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve seen this guy in real life
So Sorry!!!M O'B
Funnier than 1987 HBO Special!
Fkg funny 😭😭😭🤣🤣
11:33 It's so ridicilous that it's hilarious😂
I guess coffee enemas weren't a thing yet in '83.

Emo is a genius. The people who get it get it and those who don't *really* don't
