We saw Zach do basically this same bit at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle around the same time. Unforgettable energy. We stayed in the venue and a few more comedians did their sets. We were kind of loitering there not sure what stage to go to next. Well Mr. Galifianakis comes back out on stage, he's going to do another set. We (GF and I) decided to leave, trying to get out before he started, but we were too slow and wound up walking out just as he was starting. Zach asked us why were leaving and I kind of started to say "We already saw-" and then he just screamed at us "GET OUT!" and the crowd of course laughed their heads off as we scurried away like mice. Love you Zach, and honored to be the target of your wrath!
I remember that!!!! I was at the show and for some stupid reason sat in the front row, to his immediate left when he was at the piano and thinking to myself "please don't draw attention to myself!" LOL. That's hilarious! I remember him calling you guys out!!!
Better than being the target of a "Bumbershoot." If you are ever a Bumbershoot target, you might want to get out of the way, unless a Bumbershoot is an Inanimate Object, then, you just do whatever you want. See, if i care.
I was part of one of Zach's improvised bits. At a comedy club for the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal, I booked tickets early to see him perform but this being so many years before the Hangover movies, he was not well known and his unusual long name was unfortunately not doing him any favors. The club was half empty, organized with a bunch of little tables and chairs scattered throughout. Almost everyone sat as far to the back as they could but I wanted to be upfront to see him work his magic. He occasionally adopts an straight faced angry persona and after a while, came down from the set to rant about how there are too few people there. He blurts out something like "There are so many empty CHAIRS!" and kicks one across the club. Then, he basically beelines toward me while purposely ignoring me, as if I didn't exist and pushed his belly into my face. He's standing his belly in my face and I'm sitting there with my face implanted firmly into his belly but staying perfectly still. So we're *2* people ignoring the presence of the other and the crowd is laughing hysterically by this point. He does 2-3 jokes and eventually leaves to go back onstage. The crowd gave a huge ovation for that bit. My claim to fame was that I had Zach's belly in my face while he delivered a few jokes, while helping him get some laughs for an on-the-spot bit. :)
I loved his comedy, and he had a talk show for a month, and my friends and I went to the premiere episode because we loved his comedy and Foo Fighters were the musical guest. When Foo Fighters we’re coming on, he went up into the audience and sat next to me and we chatted briefly. He was so friendly and was genuinely excited to watch Foo Fighters do their thing.
He reminds me of comics from the 70's, as far as his creative (almost dated style delivery) material, but with just enough contemporary spin to be currently relevant. Bravo!
Purple Onion is how I discovered him. I thought it was one of the most interesting hilarious sets I’d ever seen. Might still be. Love that dude. I hope he’s over his Odoul’s addiction.
A friend showed me Purple Onion after I was complaining that most stand up comics feel like they are just following a template for how to be a comic. How they hold the mic, how they stand and walk, how they tell jokes. And I said I wanted to see someone do something different, and he said, hold on, you gotta see this. I absolutely loved it.
In the 1986 film The Mission staring Robert De Niro, Italian composer Ennio Morricone has a beautiful song called Gabriel's Oboe, and in this song right there in the orchestra with everyone else is a well dressed man in a tuxedo who's job it is to play the bongo. I always like to think that if I could read his mind he would be saying. "and they all laughed at me when I took bongo at Juilliard."
I ran into Garofalo once in the west village. She was walking her dog. Very down to earth and social. She was talking to people on the street. Very cool
There it is. Someone always goes for this easy joke on old videos of people before they become really famous. It’s not original and it’s only funny to the simple-minded.
Looks like this was from the time when Dave was having quintuple bypass surgery, as shown by Janeane Garofalo guest-hosting in this clip. Some of the other guest-hosts included Paul Shaffer, Regis Philbin, Kathie Lee Gifford, Charles Grodin, Drew Barrymore, Tom Snyder (the original host of The Late Late Show), and Tom Arnold.
