  • Stimming is a natural part of being a human being. Everyone stims. Autistic people sometimes stim in more obvious ways, or sometimes in ways that are less social acceptable.
Check out this video to learn a bit about stims.

We stim when extremely happy and excited too. My girls and I jump and flap when happy 😁 You can tell what emotions are going on by the stim if you get to know your person.

I always try to highlight the stims that parents have, especially when they ask us to put a behaviour plan in place to reduce them (which we don’t do!) Stimming is a natural and normal reaction to regulate our sensory systems.

Yeah,I guess that I used to do this as a small kid,but now,I guess some overeagrated blinking sometimes when stressed does it for me. No social connections to that. I'm grown now.

My son is autistic. As am I. He's 5. I'm glad I noticed all of his signs early. Stimming is a critical part of autism. It's very important for parents to understand that stopping a child from Stimming in certain situations can be harmful to the child. Remember that you cannot get them to act or behave as a "normal" child would. To them they are normal and displaying their emotions the only way they know how. Recognize the stimuli which causes your child to stim so can be aware of the triggers. Great video.

Thanks for the support, Yishai! The point I really try to drive home to families is that EVERYONE stims. It's just that stimming for a non-autistic looks more 'socially acceptable'. No one (other than my grandmother!) ever told me to stop twisting my hair around my fingers when I was concentrating. When stims are dangerous or destructive, we always try to find a replacement that meets the same sensory need but is safer.

I'm autistic and I stim because I am happy or I stim because I am really excited or I stim because I need to calm down or I stim because I need to realse some energy or I stim because I am upset or I stim because I am bored or I just stim just to stim or I stim when I am having a sensory overload

      Hi Emma,
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I'm glad that you're able to harness the benefits of stimming and how it can help you. Lately, I've been noticing how neurotypicals also stim but how it's not seen in the same light. I think that we need to accept all stims regardless of who's doing them or why.

That is true. Regardless if someone has autism or not there are all types of different ways to express how they are feeling

I just found out I have high functioning autism and I'm 15. Is it time to get diagnosed? I'm not really sure if I want to be labeled...

Hey there! Thanks for asking my opinion. I believe that if you’ve got concerns then pursuing an assessment can’t hurt. You don’t have to disclose the diagnosis to school or friends if you’re worried about stigma. In Ontario (where I live) you need a diagnosis to access services and funding.

      Thanks for the insight!
I always encourage families to embrace their child's stims (as long as they're not dangerous or destructive) because everyone should have outlets that allow them to self-regulate.
