Our 1 year old toddler has been diagnosed as moderately to severely autistic so here are the early signs of autism in 20 month old toddlers. @@lmrharper3586 I actually agree with you that there isnt' a lot that many wouldn't think was "normal", it's why when all the professionals started bringing up concerns and pointing things out I was like "I didn't realize he was supposed to be doing ALL of those things" and its why I made this video. To help let others know hey these are the early signs.. His muscle tone has been diagnosed and confirmed by 2 occupational therapists, 2 pediatricians, 1 physical therapist, the doctor who evaluated him, and the Early Steps therapist who was also a special needs mom. So I can understand how you could watch a 10 min video and say "oh I don't see that" but its just a 10 min clips of very short clips. You can believe it or not. That's not what this video was about, it was to help educate others. I hope you have a great holiday season!

My little brother acted like this from 1 till he was 5 we took him to multiple doctors and speech doctors he’s 14 and perfectly fine now I’m wishing the same for you 💜
He made very little eye contact you would have to get his attention with something he likes such as a toy or object and no he didn’t fully talk till 5 but we did get him a speech therapist from the children’s hospital and he was diagnosed with quiet ADHD
Allthingsperish I also have a 1 year old son and he does the same thing he ignores me all day until he wants to be held and he doesn’t say anything until he wants something I really think it’s development pace every child develop at their own pace I’m pretty sure your child is fine (i hope that doesn’t sound harsh) but I wouldn’t recommend some research and getting a few opinions from other moms and doctors and I pray all goes well and your daughter starts talking soon

My guy also gives full attention when singing. He is 18 months now and was diagnosed yesterday with Autism. Everyone else told me he is fine and just delayed but the doctors think otherwise. Im crushed.
He says and does more than my not yet diagnosed 2.5 year old, and has more clear signs of normal development. 20 months is too early to diagnose IMO. There’s still time for the development of responding to his name and other basic things that might just not have formed in his brain yet at that age. Kids at that age don’t play with each other, they ‘play’ along side each other. ABA is not very humane. My opinion. It teaches that autism is a range of badly behaved symptoms, which is just not true, autism is a difference in neurobiology. It could be good for self injurious or harmful behaviour perhaps, but not for anything else. I know this is old, but I would have let him be for a bit longer. You'll end up making him feel bad for his being his normal autistic self. No parent is perfect, and mum is clearly doing what she think is best, but it’s incredibly different over here in the UK to how we do things. ABA is just not done.

They don't like certain material it feels awful on their skin.They may not like water....so showers or baths can be a struggle.Smells they will let u know if verbal,or put shirt over nose&complain kinda loud.Visually things have to be in the order they like or they may become highly agitated.And loud noises are bad,they may cover their ears and run back to room.

Sensory disorders can look different. In some cases the individual is very sensitive and doesn’t like a lot of sensory or become easily overwhelmed by it. ( being touched, the way something feels, they way food tastes, loud sounds, bright lights)
In other cases the individual may not receive the same response a Nero typical individual would when experiencing certain sensations so they crave thing in more intense amounts. ( loud sounds, very sweet or salty foods, when something feels a certain way “textures” tight clothing, weighted blankets, some my even enjoy hitting or biting themselves because to them it feels more like a hug or a high five. The brain isn’t registering the sensation as intensely as it should so they are attempting to fill that gap.

This is a great video, thank you for sharing your experiences. Liam's mannerisms and behaviors are so familiar and bittersweet for me to watch, my own son had almost exactly the same delays and mannerisms when he was Liam's age. His language was mostly words he would echo back and practically non-existent, he had the same stims (especially the head shaking) and he seemed to be in his own world. Now my son is a healthy 16-year-old junior in high school, on the honor roll and looking at colleges, driving himself to school in the car he saved to buy, and holding down a part time job. He still has some struggles with higher order social situations, but he has friends and a well developed sense of humor and he functions like any other high school kid.
Early intervention was absolutely essential - my son had occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and behavioral therapy...in school and privately. My son also had hippotherapy (OT on horseback) which addressed his low tone and poor balance and helped him meet his goal of riding his bike. It's been a long road, but so incredibly worth it!
My unsolicited advice to all the parents who are concerned and navigating an autism diagnosis - become your child's fiercest advocate. Learn about the IEP process at school and find out what kind of supports the school system must have in place. Respectfully request all therapists (school and private) communicate with other so the therapies are in sync. Do not believe that your child is the sum of his or her diagnosis, a diagnosis will never accurately predict what your child is capable of. You got this, your child is capable of so much with you in their corner. ❤
Literally crying as I read this. My 16 month old is showing all the signs of autism and I have been so worried sick and upset thinking that there were would be almost no chance she could have a normal life if and when she gets diagnosed. Your amazing son is so inspirational and gives me so much hope. You are also an amazing parent to have made sure he had every opportunity to succeed. Thank you for sharing your story!
I knew my son had it at birth. I was told he would never talk potty train and be in a institution at 10 years old. He was 5 when he was potty trained. He talked at 3 he still repeats certain things. He didn’t sleep through the night til he was 5. He was super hyper. He is 26. He works in a grocery store. He manages his money. Takes 2 buses to and from work. Looking down and not looking you in the eye is common. My son at 13 started looking at us in the eye. He is not what the experts said

I didn't know anything about autism when I first started watching UA-cam there are a lot of different channels that talk about their autistic children but you really explain it to a point where anybody could understand you have taught me so much and I do appreciate that

I have a question I recently had a family member who was on the spectrum and then taken off by another neurologist a year later. Is there any chance that some of these " typical autistic signs " are just typical toddler behaviours. Only because when they said she was autistic I really felt the kid was slow to warm and her behaviour would change with each interaction. It's concerning cause these labels are defining their care only to be changed just like kids do.
One of the hard part about having a child with Autism is making sure you keep reminding yourself that they love you even though they don't show affection.

This was so so helpful. My 2 year old has been going thru an evaluation for the past month to see weather or not they are going to diagnose him. They come to my home everyday to work with him and study him. November 4th we have a meeting to go over everything and see what our next steps are going to be. He does of the same things as your son does. Except he makes good eye contact and he watches people’s lips when they are talking.

@@carmenliemegne5224 he was diagnosed with level 2-3 autism. He’s currently in an autism preschool program. His twin was also diagnosed with autism. He’s level 1-2 though. They start kindergarten in August. They’re doing a lot better now. Thankful for all the programs my city offers

My 2 year old son does the EXACT same things as Liam. He likes to hold car keys in his hand and walk around with them. My son has his next doctor's appointment very soon....definitely going to get him evaluated, This video actually helped me. Thank you!
Liam is super cute. That red hair is 😍. I know I keep saying this but he reminds me so much of our Luke. It's great that he's saying words already; Luke was well over two when he said his first words. 🥰

I didn't have hardly any help but a couple of books and papers, like Eating an Artichoke--that book described my high functioning Asperger's boy to a tee! It really helped me get the help I needed for him to get him diagnosed and treated!

I have a 7 year old boy with moderate to severe autism. He didn’t get diagnosed until age 6. Started the process at age five but it takes forever due to lack of services in my area. Anyway, looking back I wish that I was educated about Autism because he was showing signs at 6 months! He is my only child and I didn’t know anything about Autism and so I just kept telling myself that he would catch up. It wasn’t until someone on my Facebook friends list wrote a post about her sons journey that I said “OMG, she just described my son” Early intervention is key. Keep up the good work!

It feels like I just watched my own son . He's having his evaluation in a few weeks . He was sent to PT for delayed walking , He's in Speech and OT .
Try using toys as a lure to help walking.. and assist your son whilst walking.. he may be sensitive on his feet..
Does he toe walk? Use shoes on his feet to help aid his walking too.. however, if he shows signs of shoes being funny on his feet (ie, he tries to take them off) allow him to walk without them..
My partner and i, if we notice him toe walking, tell him to stomp his feet like an elephant..

My son has always made like loud humming? sounds. He’s 13 now and still does it. He’s also always ran back and forth while flapping his hands. All of his tendencies started when he was around 2. Before age 2 he was just very distant and wouldn’t look at us. He still won’t talk.
The humming is verbal stymming.
Thank you so much for making this video and putting yourself out there. It is incredibly informational and helped me visual some symptoms of autism. It also validated my concerns of my son being autistic. He got an official diagnosis yesterday. I feel inadequate to help him right now but I having the diagnosis means we can get started on the work to help him.
I used Dr Oyalo herbs for my son and now my son is completely free, his speaking and behavior is ok. His herbs is 100% working on speech delay and ASD.

Firstly your little boy is adorable 😊 I've had a gut feeling our little boy has autism but I just keep getting hit with, it's his age its his craniosynostosis ect ect we are hoping to get more answers soon, he dose a lot of the things you have included in your video, thank you for making it.
My daughter does something similar with looking at her feet when walking. Shes mostly grown out of it now that shes 5. She also always would run and watch her shadow instead of where she was going. And she has always been bad with like ride ons and bikes with moving around, watching where shes going, turning. Idk if its autism or not, but compared to her seemingly NT sister who's 18 months it seems odd, our 18 month old does ride ons like a boss.
I am sure my granddaughter has autism. I raised 5 children and I started noticing unusual things about her and now that she’s about 18 months. My daughter doesn’t agree with my thoughts and I understand & respect that. What matters is that we offer her what is needed in life. She’s perfect to me.

My friends baby did not talk until he was 3 yrs old. But now at 10 yrs he tutors other kids in his grade.

I had that problem where my speech was delayed. I didn't respond to my parents and their commands. I really was off in my own world, but I had an underlying issue. I had tonsillitis a lot and ear infections. Of course that would hurt so when I got tubes in my ears and my tonsils taken out, that did the job. There's video of me barely even talking to 6 months later singing preschool songs and my ABC's as a 3 year old.
Everyone saying he seems normal...i have 2 girls one with level 2 to 3 autism spectrum disorder and i believe a neurotypical 14 month old. If its ur child u just know...my 14 month old says mama and looks at me and loves other children she chases her big sis and hands me toys.. My4 year old isnt interested in other children with therapy she does listen to her name and has improved upon this amongst other things. She hit milestones on time physically but there are social milestones that u have to look for and my 14 month old is with my 4 year old hitting milestones. There is just a differnce a parent knows. My 14 month old shakes her head but yet everyone has a stim either way. Aba will not harm a neurotypical child it will only help so.even if ur child is neurotypical aba will do no harm and may even help them hit milestones ahead of time.
Yeah I have yet to have one specialist, doctor, or therapist to spend adequate time with Liam and NOT think he's on the spectrum (and that's 3 doctors, 10+ therapists, and 2 specialists). I know it scares others because Liam in these short clips "appears" like a typical toddler but that's the point of this. A toddler can seem like he's just a typical child but have specific things that if you don't know what to look for. I missed these signs. I was an autism mom and I STILL missed these signs in Autism. This video is to help educate and give real life footage, not to argue my son's diagnosis that has been confirmed through so many assessments and tests.
i also have a 13 year old grandson he is autistic but verbal he is aspergers his two year old sister is currently being tested for autism but she non verbal hasn't spoken a word not even moma dada nothing and does some things in this post thanks it was very helpful and informative i will send to my daughter so she can help dr to make a proper diagnosis
thanks for the post it helped my daughter thinks her baby is autistic she is two hasnt spoke a word she is beign tested currently she does acknowledge her mom but a lot others stuff in post she does i have viewed another person post and my grand daughter does a lot that as well so helpful i will send this to my daughter
Just found your channel & so glad I did! We just started our journey with my developmentally delayed daughter. She’s 14m old and has almost every single one of these signs. She does show a tad more “typical” affection than Liam does here, but only when SHE wants to lol. Otherwise it’s a tantrum if we initiate the affection. & She too has the oral fixation, hardcore. I’m not able to really show or teach her anything bc it all goes straight to her mouth to be chewed on. She loves carrying around random objects (right now it’s lotion bottles) and will walk and walk and walk all around the house with it. I recognized all these signs at about 11-12m because my nephew is autistic, so I made an appt with a neurologist who prescribed Speech, OT & ABA which we start next Tuesday!

Autism isn't a disease a child "recovers" from, it's lifelong and apart of who they are. Therapies can help with certain aspects like communication, fine motor, gross motor, sensory, social skills, etc. For us, we have seen a tiny bit improvement in receptive skills and engagement.

It just seem to be non existent. He has a main friend,only real close friend.....me.And I have Lupus plus other debilitating illnesses.My daughter took us in when my husband left for younger woman 10 yrs.ago.He was mean a lot.Has bipolar 1 but won't take meds....so he is way out of picture because of his treatment. I think pretty common of that era which was be a man,don't look weak, get over it,deal with it.I had the key to turn to get into my son's world,but there is change every day.With touretts,rheum.arthritis&schizophrenia, bad irritable bowel,he sees 4 Drs.i want people to tactically help now so their child at 40 has 1 real friend.the key into My son was noticing I have it also.Thank you for you getting info.out to people,so people just won't just ignore what they don't understand and love these people because they are way more sensed into reality than others,sweeter,kinder people.Have HOPE every day and just do what u can in there world to make them know how wonderful they are.

Hi stephanie, my son is asd. He just turned 3. His red flags were nearly all identical to liams. I always felt liam reminds me of my son. My son always needed sensory input. He used to jump a lot, inverted feet by w sitting, he put everything in his mouth. His receptive lamguage was soooo far behind. he didnt acknowledge other kids let alone babies. He didnt look up at us. He was very much in his own world. And never had any words let alone functional words. I want to give you huge hope as my son has improved so much and these are the things we did and are still doing. Firstly for his receptive language, aba will be perfect for that in particular. I too trained to learn the aba techniques with the consultant so i can do a lot of the techniques myself. I would take him to each activity i want him to learn and say 'do this' ..only use those words and then i would do the activity....so that he can learn that I am asking him for a request. Once he learns to do it both his imitation skills improve and his understanding. You then do other simple demands and again keep showing him what the demand is and requesting him to do it aswell. Each time reinforcing with a little treat. I usually give crisps -small pieces or whatever he likes.
With the eye contact i initially started with the ipad. I would put on his favorite nursery songs. After 10 seconds i would stop the clip. Call him name. The second he looks i say 'good looking' while pointing at my eye...and then press play on the clip again. Do that as much as u can until he understands when you say 'liam look' ...that means u expect him to look at u. Move that onto treats aswell. Everytime he wants a treat try to get him to look. With my son...once he learned to look at me ,(he was improving with us at this point) we then would want him to hold the stare into the eyes for 2 seconds rather than 1. Then 3 seconds. Im currently at 5 seconds and generally his eye contact has improved so much. I think he looks at me everytime i call him
In terms of the sensory, we still struggle with that a bit. But what has helped is being on top of it. Which will be hard as u have a lot of other responsibilities. But for a few weeks you can try these techniques: everytime he is jumping direct him to the trampoline. To teach him that he can do it there. Also body weights. Hes clearly seeking. Gets everything weighted. Blakets. Ankle weights. Anything. Also tight clothes lol. Iv heard keep them in thicker and tighter clothes they like it. My son still tries to put everything in his mouth. We tried chewy tube. He does like it but hes obsessed with stones which are dangerous. He would put them in his mouth even at nursery. And i was always scared he will choke on one. So i made him necklaces with stones on them. Stones he likes. But at least he cant accidently swallow. Also i give him an electic tooth brush daily. This has all rly helped get this need out of hos system.
Label everything. Hold his eye contact before e.g blowing the bubble.
In terms of having him acknowledge his siblings. I bought my son a toy dolly. I let him chose one at the store so i know he likes it. I bring this baby doll with him around the house. When i feed him i put the doll next to him and feed the doll after i give him a spoonful. So he learns to share food with the doll. Then i take his hand and taught him to feed the baby doll aswell. This all helps with pretend play which u might find does not exist in his behaviour. It didnt with my son. Then when i change his clothes i also change the dolls clothes. I hug the doll and teach him to hug the doll. Then i eventually introduced his baby cousin to him and the other day he cake and kissed and hugged his cousin!!! You can maybe use Penelope in this technique rather than a doll but you really want the doll so he can hold it how he likes lol.
Theres so much more i have to share if you would like let me know. My son is now 3 and doing really well. We are a family with 2 kids, living in the uk. His sister is typical and he is asd, we are from iraq originally so initially we spoke both english and arabic. But we are now only speaking english at home and keeping all talking around him in 1 to 2 words to keep it simple. I wish you all the best xxx

@@harpreetkaur-oc3yy no problem harpreet! Do try finding aba therapy. Here in the uk I have to pay for it myself. But maybe in canada its different. Regular therapy is good too. Try to involve your child in your daily routine as much as possible. And get as much help as you can. Autism is a set back but its not the end at all! There is a lot of hope and these kids are super clever. We need to just help them achieve their potential. Be positive and strive for you son and it will get better for sure !
I also want know if your son have or had sleep issues? My son wake up in middle of the night and than doesn't sleep for 2-3 hours .... what can i do for that?

My 4 year old has Asperger's or high functioning ASD is what it's called now. She's in therapy. She's VERY smart, I have high functioning ASD as well. Mine is much different than my daughter's, and you family's kids. Literally this UA-cam channel keeps me from feeling lost. It's hard to find help in rural Arkansas. So, yeah. Haters gonna hate? But I know I NEED to this channel, because it helps knowing others who are like our family. Hard to feel normal when EVERYTHING and EVERYONE either doesn't get the Spectrum part, or the Autism part. THANKS for being a normal family for us.

@@roudlinepoulaille5215 The first 3years is a critical developmental stage in our lives, a window of time that we never experience again. Early intervention minimizes and can even prevent delays. Whether it's Autism or a speech delay, sensory disorder, whatever, the earlier a child starts receiving help the better. It's like waiting to fail a test to finally start studying. You might pass the test if your lucky but the odds are not in your favor.
Do any autistic toddlers (20 months) make excellent eye contact? Cause my toddler does some of these signs but makes very good eye contact
Some do. And some might appear to have eye contact but once you get closer you realize they're looking at your nose or mouth. Or they might have brief eye contact. A toddler can have some of these signs and not have autism but having good eye contact doesn't mean they don't. Liam has decent eye contact, not great but not horrible.

Great information. And another great video. Some of the signs he has and Noah has an Lex has they all remand me of stuff I had and did as a kid..... I had childhood ADHD and have it still in Adult form. But my family esp on my dad's side always had it . starting with his dad then at 72 my dad was ofically diagnosed as having it. Even though he thought and still thinks he has Astburgers. I think I might have and alaways had that too. But don't know yet for sure. And would to be reevaluated to see if I really have that. My dad too. And esp now since its considered part of the Autism spectrum
ADHD has a spectrum too from what I last heard. And even though ADD doesn't exist any more and it's all just straight ADHD. The quiet non hyper active destructive disruptive ones. Just are hyper active more quietly. Like tapping a pencil finger or foot rapid my or doodling all the time. I know alot about ADHD. I have books on it and try to study about it and keep up about all the time. And want to find a channel on UA-cam that talks about it more and gives current up to date info. Or we could share stuff in this coumminity about it. I don't have money to be on pateron or by March but if I did and could I would support you guys hands down. Because you guys are so open and honest and keep things real. As real as they can be for a channel on you tube. Speaking about ADHD and it's spectrum again and I will finish and let everyone get on with there busy and hopefully good day. The last I heard. That there are different types of ADHD and how they affect ppl differently more then just ppl are different. There are certain different types that affect the brain in different areas that happen so much they are put into these distinct types. And they can tell which type you have by doing a brain scan and which are ether light up or darken depend ing on what type you have. And I think they can better talior fit. Meds and threapy and all treatments to better fit each person on what type they have. And I find that fascinating. It used to be every hyper kid had ADHD and that was just it and you take meds for it and that's that. Iam so glad it like other things in the brain and body are being studied more now and better understood and more ways of treating things are being given and are proven to work now. So meds and over diagnosing are not the only solution anymore or just meds will fix everything approach is being changed when meds are need yes use meds. I use a few and the help alot. But use threapy s exercise diet and life style changes and meds are some magic thing that you can take forever and the cure all and every is maticly cured. No meds are excellent tools to help use and are vitaly needed sometimes but are just tool . And as ppl are selves and. As ppl who are parents of children with unique gifts to give to this world. I like that better than saying disorder or sydrom or disease. It just sounds better and more positive to me. And still is real. Parents and other adults who work with kids with these gifts. They have to work harder and the kids them selves have to work harder too. Just to get the world out there that we are ok good ppl and have a right to be here and we can do things just in a different way and maybe not as much as others and we are all valuable. And fight stigma s andppls ignorance and ops mis conception s about us and things. And not ppl with bad atttudies and stuff make us feel bad about are selves we are good ppl and not stupid ppl ruin our day or influence us into having bad attitudes and not treating ppl fairly or kindly. Don't let hates get you down iam trying to say. And in my family besides my dad who is 80 who has ADHD there's me 40 who has it then my nephew who is 8 who has it too. And on my late mothers side of her family tree all different cousins in different family's all who were realeted to her and my uncle now by blood all have too. So yeah is command in my genetics like depression and city and physical stuff to. If you can't tell. Iam really into biology and genealogy of my family's history and stuff and many other things. Iam trying to lead by example for my nephew and niece. For my nephewit is to take care of my self and my needs and to be healthier in all ways. I can explain all I want. But kids learn from there parents family members and other trusted adults more by seeing doing observing experiencing than by explaining most of the time. My mom and dad did the best they could forme and my sister growing up. Now my sister is a super mom and I didn't think it was possible but she's doing more and being better at it then even my own mom was my bro in law too. I just remembered a lot of love growing up and aceptance and being free to have an open mind and heart. That's what my sis and bro in law are doing with the kids. And you and Lonnie Sr , Stephanie you guys are doing that with your kids. The world needs more super parents like you. Don't let haters who don't understand you guys or your life get you down. And don't worry even though iam a weird quirky cat mom person. I am not scary. I do not want your home address. Or to know where exactly guys live. Agreed. For us, it wasn't like a few. It was that he had every one and that's the difference. Putting things in their mouth is VERY common and not really an autism trait.

He's 1 Yr old still a bavy, all baby's struggle with talking and language nit all babies talk. I thunk uts so wrong labelling babies with autism before they've. Grown up a Little bit. I'm sure oarsnts these days expect there babies to be talking and communicating like adults. They are NOT perfect. They don't always listen and respond to there name
He is now 6.5 and very much autistic. There’s a difference between typical children differences and autism. They should respond to their name at least once or twice considering they start responding to their name at 8 months
I didn't see or understand the signs y'all seen in him, till after this video, because to watching y'all's video he does what other babies do, smile, giggle and play. Now that I seen this video I understand now, this was definitely a detailed enough video for me to understand what autism looks like in a toddler. I love those red curls that he have. He looks like Noah in the eyes too and lex looks like Lonnie Jr. The little Bros looks like the big Bros.
Autism with toddlers is very subtle and it's easy to be missed or not understood. It's more of what they don't do! Thank you so much!!!!
Has he had a hair mineral test done? It will show the levels of heavy metals which plays a huge part in autism. If you catch it now you can reverse some of the side effects.
