I've come up with a theory, the reason that Carter McLean is so good at the drums because he has the word clean in his name and thus has a lot of expectations to live up to
Number 5, I think has the best balance of crispiness and clarity, without being too harsh, and still having rim shots that stand out in a good way. Of course it depends on the project, because 1 and 6 both have really uniquely tasteful sounds.
It's a Pioneer and I own a '60 non-serial badge and it's an incredible drum!! It survived a flood in the basement, the white painted interior is probably what saved it! Sadly, the mint duco finish has been flaking off ever since. It still does sound fantastic! Lots of presence and character. I keep saying the Pioneer is to the Jazzfest what the Acrolite is to the Supra. Whenever I'm doing a song with rim clicks I use the Pioneer, they ring so hard!!! Drum number one though did give me the itch to finish a long standing project... I'd built a 15x8 Super Sensitive snare out of a cut down 15x12 3-ply marching snare... Problem is I used a shell from a mach lug snare and I had to plug up a lot of holes. A pair of these holes ended up straddling other holes I drilled to fit small classic lugs. This created a line of weakness along each lug pair and after 2 gigs I had to retire the poor thing. Stress cracks started to appear and I could see the shell bulging around the tail of each lug. It did sound fantastic though! Very fat with tons of clarity and articulation. I've acquired another 15x12 shell but with small lugs, so I can just cut off one end and add fresh holes and this one should be fine... I'll do the french polished clear mahagony finish again on that one as well!!
Not the kind of tuning I prefer but honestly I like them all! It world also be interesting to know which one is YOUR favourite! Great playing by the way, as always!
Love the Raw Copperphonic… my trigger finger is sooooo itchy! I reckon with a hide drum-head that’d reduce me to a puddle. ❤ Liked #3 also; would sound v. good tuned low, I think. Thanks Carter.
Well they all sound great to me. Like many #5 would edge the others out. But Carter your hand technique is fantastic. Wish i could afford a few lessons from you. Maybe one day. Cheers. Bill.
I think number 5 was my favorite. The rimshot sound was a little more controlled, and it had a warmer sound overall to me. It also had my favorite sound for backbeats. Number 4 was my second choice.
#5 sounds great with that kit. They all sound good, but might fit in better with different kits. I should pull down my little clubdate, they're fun to play and they always make the studio seem a bit bigger!
All these snares sound great. Honestly, it’s difficult for me to hear huge differences in the tonal qualities. Maybe cuz I just came from a gig, maybe cuz this guy’s shit-sick hands are blowing my eyes out!

Impossible task, loved them all. Impeccable playing by Carter, as usual. I wouldn't be able to pick just one.........
Mr. Perfect Tuning made it again! Impeccable, as always. Can hardly notice the difference between snares.
Snare 1 for me. Soft attack, low end, some cool hollow cave sound. Must be great for soft and hard playing as to me sounds like it’ll never get harsh.
They're ALL great! I like 5 the most with this kit and tuning!
Snare number five is making me rethink my entire life. What a great sound!
That copper sounded just right. 👌
Man...those Promark Firegrain McLean Drumsticks are 🔥👏😎
P.S. I LOVE that snare at 6:25! What is it?!
Sticks are one thing, but it's down to the bugger holding em =)
..are 💸💸💸

Mambo #5
All of them sound fantastic! Really love #6
All good. 5 and 6 have the most character. I think. If I listened again I’d probably switch it up😂
Number 5. Perfect balance of attack and body. Nice dynamic, clear rimshots, very musical.

@@G60syncro Congratulations to this excellent snare drum, and thank you for providing the details!
Not sure which I like... that's a tough one. I'm still using an old Rogers snare from the mid 80's accompanied by my 1967 Ludwigs. (Ringo Edition)
Guess I'm going with #5
First one is the most articulate, airly, defined, silky with a balanced tone.
Snare 4 is my favourite sounding!
Not the kind of tuning I prefer but honestly I like them all!
It world also be interesting to know which one is YOUR favourite!
Great playing by the way, as always!
They all sound pretty nice, but if I could walk away with one I’d take #5!
Hello Carter, 3 and 5, really nice Stuff, recording sound and beaty drumming as always. Regards from Spain.
Love the Raw Copperphonic… my trigger finger is sooooo itchy! I reckon with a hide drum-head that’d reduce me to a puddle. ❤
Liked #3 also; would sound v. good tuned low, I think.
Thanks Carter.
2 and 6 for allround playing, 5 for jazz😍
Snare 4, blue duco one. Fat! Crispy enough, not to much. Would love to use this one in the studio for old-school music styles.
All great but #4 for me . Amazing hands !
Hi Carter, Hope all is well. Scott Chard You Da Man as usual
Wonderfully tuned snares. Would you have the brand names of these and of course your playing them are awesome. The kit looks like a Ludwig jazz?
Number six but all sound great.
The Red Duco has an incredible rimshot 6:54
The first was my favorite
1 and 5
The number 5 is amazing!
Well they all sound great to me. Like many #5 would edge the others out.
But Carter your hand technique is fantastic. Wish i could afford a few lessons from you. Maybe one day. Cheers. Bill.
Eyes closed and/or in a mix, I wouldn't even be able to tell you were changing snares. They all sound so alike. cool collection though!
I think the Neusonic snare is a steal. I just love it.
They are all sweet, there's something about number 3 that I like though! It's seems a bit mellower but just a nice tone
All that no possible with a électronic Snare , amazing
What is snare #3? Sounds incredible.
I like the 6th then 4th. I usually prefer the sound of metal snares, so no surprise here
I think number 5 was my favorite. The rimshot sound was a little more controlled, and it had a warmer sound overall to me. It also had my favorite sound for backbeats. Number 4 was my second choice.
#5 and #6. Tie. I could hear your depth transition more in those 2. Outstanding.
All sound great, would love to hear that copper snare in a more shallow depth.
#1! Soo good!
You seemed the most inspired by snare five, so that’ll be my pick!
Wow, except for #5, the others sound remarkably similar. And they sound good. Real good.
Number six sounded best to my ears, followed by number three, then number five.
I like the characteristics of the 1st and 5th.
#5 sounds great with that kit.
They all sound good, but might fit in better with different kits.
I should pull down my little clubdate, they're fun to play and they always make the studio seem a bit bigger!
number 6 has great low end and articulation, but i think i like rimshots on number 3 the best!
I’m a fan of number 1 and 6. Leaning to number 6 because I tend to like metal snares better.
woahhhh firegrain signatures, are those coming out to the public??
Stay tuned early next year 😁
Each one you pick is fine .
4 and 5 for me the best
4 and 5 got the mojo!
IMHO, snare 5 the winner. Snare 6 is my second favorite.
Snare #5 imo has the best sound :D
#5!
Snare 1 !
What drum head are you using on that ?
Its an Evans calf tone I think
Carter, what heads do you use to get your bass drum sound, I assume no damping?
Snare nr 4!
5 and 4 😍
#5 is best match with that drum set
All these snares sound great. Honestly, it’s difficult for me to hear huge differences in the tonal qualities. Maybe cuz I just came from a gig, maybe cuz this guy’s shit-sick hands are blowing my eyes out!
nah, I agree. they all sound extremely similar.
5,6,4 and 1 in that order for me.
6 😎 🥁
Gotta be no. 5!
No 1
Interesting (but understandable) that people in the comments gravitate to the brightest sounding snare (most transient as well)
They all sounded great, the copper was a little different
#5 wins for me. It is a Ludwig Pioneer. 6-lug wood snare.
4
Hahahaha you made me laugh with the mario bros theme
3, once you loosened it off a little, then 6, 5, 4, 1 and finally 2.
Snare 6 favorite, then snare 1.
#1 🥇
All quite crisp and nice. I like #5. What is it? My guitarist wants me to invest in a better snare. Of course it could be my skills LOL.
number #5
I liked #5 the most, crackin...
How about #7 ?
4:45 I like that one
Three and five.
#1
Snare 2 clears the rest
Gotta be #5
It's going to be hard to beat number 6, wow
#4 & #5
1. Snare 5
2. Snare 4
3. Snare 2
Probably #1 or #5
1 then 4 then 6.
Number 2 sounded the best to me, but number 5 sounded best with the kit you’re using.
5
#3
The copperphonic
Always..
all snares are much more similar than what manufactures want us to believe... :/
no 3
They all sounds pretty much the same, nice fat wooden sound.
Number “FIVE “ ,…….. Is alive
First one!!!
1 and 6!!
