    I get how you feel with the hobby being kinda meh now. I look forward to seeing what else you do with the channel though, if you plan to keep uploading on this one at least. Thank you for all the objective reviews over the years as well.

      I entered this hobby because of the satisfaction of typing on them, but now that I've been typing for years with different boards, the "fun" is waning off a bit.

      I'm done now, one more GB left and I've sold a lot of my boards. It's probably the best and worst time to enter the hobby. You can get access to most boards and keycaps at good prices but you need to be careful what you buy, it's hard to resell anything for retail.

      After building several boards, I'm not excited about the hobby anymore. Doing any more to buy and spend time to tweak to get just the right sound seems kind of obsessive over something insignificant and petty. What I have is sufficient and being content with what I have, I can leave the the hobby now.

  • @zkulltastic

    I think that this and your other recent video are a refreshing take on the hobby. At least on UA-cam most content creators usually just present the next keyboard "you just have to get" and dont really ask for how much they last or maybe when to stop (which I get from a professional content creator's perspective). Personally, I'm still interested in the hobby and want to try out many more keyboards. There are just not as many (affordable) options when you dont use ANSI-US.

    Regarding the Lulu, you can use a different PCB, any Lily58 PCB fits. This is what I've done with my second Lulu, I used the Lily58 PCB from Boardsource and two Nice!Nanos controller to make a fully wireless Lulu. It works well and it's probably the closest you'll get to the UniGo66 in terms of wireless functionality and build.

    I'm kind of in the similar state in the hobby, except i still have group buys getting delivered. They all just stay in the boxes they arrived in without ever being opened. Hopefully I'll be intrigued enough again in the future to do some more builds

    Also rarely interested in new boards these days - I'd recommend venturing into the realm of designing your own board if you feel a lack of "satisfaction" with your current collection!

      fr. thats what i do now. the joy of desinging your own is unmatched. it may look bad at the start. but hey its 1 of 1. after spending lots of money i realized that what is even custom when i just buy everything from case to keycaps

    • @9core
      @9core Рік тому

      With a 1 of 1 you are usually screwing the manu over and the logistics of running a gb, even a somewhat small one are too complex.

    • @wyzkun
      @wyzkun Рік тому

      @@9core there are lots of way to do 1 of 1 instead of just went to the manu. at least in my country there are lots of shop that can do small order. and making 1 of 1 with manu is just wasting your money. the mold itself worth probably like 10 keyboard. something that involves casting will be hard unless you do resin cast which you can do at home. but metal cnc are easy to do or you can do wood cnc you just need to learn some program and make a shitton of prototype till you satisfied with it.

    • @9core
      @9core Рік тому

      @@wyzkun I was talking about cnc factories. Most expect runs of at least 50 units after the preproduction. Small runs can lose them money and can also delay other bigger jobs, a lot of factories even banned keyboards for this reason. Consider finishing as well, preparing an ano pot for 1 kb and then throwing it out is super wasteful. Add to that the engineers having to fix your design which is probably flawed and unoptimized for machining if you are only learning design to make a kb for yourself. While it is possible to do one-offs or small runs in a less shitty manner, as a general rule you should avoid them . Alternatively, consider doing something simpler like laser cut stacked acrylic if you just want a unique piece.

    This was very interesting! I will be keeping most of my TKLs and Alice boards. It's funny how we strayed away from rubber domes but we always end up with a Topre in the end. BTW CRP Keycaps are the best, no contest ;)

    I'm in the same boat. Still have a few group buys to come in but haven't ordered anything for about a year also. Have one sitting in the box I still haven't built but I'll prob get around too it. I still enjoy them but there's a lot I don't use even after selling most of them. I also value practicality a lot more now, whereas I'd used to have these mirror-polished and super fragile boards. To be fair I still have quite a few like that lol.

    I understand how you feel about the hobby. There hasn't been much in the last five years that I've gotten excited about, except for revived classic switches like hall effect, capacative buckling springs, etc. I'd love to try Topre switches actually, but never understood HHKB. Only the Ger(?) 80 in your collection wowed me, and your friend's blue TKL with the Alps switches. Shame you won't be doing a review of that. Good luck with whatever comes next. If you're looking for an even deeper rabbit hole to fall into, may I suggest fountain pens? ;-)

    if you're interested in split boards, id check out the dygma raise. ive been using it for over 2 years now, and i much prefer it over regular boards(with the tenting kit ofc). The software it uses is unmatched compared to VIA/QMK. they are coming out with a wireless columnar keyboard too later this year(soon ish actually). which will feature wireless, built in tenting and tons of rgb(the dygma defy). Late this year they are planning on making a wireless version of the raise as well, but its gonna be a while.

    I gave up on normal keyboards ages ago, now I get only the extremely weird ones, which limit my purchases to a couple per year. The weird 40% scene still has a few more interesting boards popping up here and there. I got the lulu as well, peg was so dissapointing, I ended up editing the files by hand. I don't use it that much, the Corne-ish zen is a much more refined product

    I'm glad I have mechanical keyboards because I enjoy typing on them.
    But this is one hobby (at least for me) you can be content with two or three boards.
    Having more just seems pointless.

  • @Ranger629

    I feel you on that, I’ve shaved 90% of my boards away. Keeping only what truly is enjoyable to me. Even then, I still feel like shaving them down further.
    The entire hobby has gotten to the point it’s so tiring to chase after the next project. Most boards are mediocre at best and they sound similar. It’s just a chase of hype and the board that gives you the most fame.
    I’ve dropped off the hobby so much and returned back to my other hobbies. A sweet and bitter farewell at the same time. A hobby that has multiple gatekeepers and toxic kids that believe they are right and everyone else is wrong. I guess, I’ll not miss this hobby once I’m gone.

  • @kirti3839
    @kirti3839 Рік тому +1

    sincei started out in the hobby, i always focused on making each of my boards feel, sound and look difference from one another. i don't have a huge budget so I never wanted to get every board that just kinda looks nice. it helped me make each of my keyboards feel unique and fun, instead of just buying what people are into currently.
    it also helps that a lot of "budget boards" these days are quite high quality and often outright offer more build options that high end group buys. having a board that doesn't break the bank that I can build to my liking makes the entire thing not feel like a money sink but an actual project each time.

    It says a lot that the HHKB Hybrid (Non Type-S) is the one board I would keep if I had to liquidate all of my custom mechs.
    Once lubed and silenced, I added a set of hi-pro keycaps to them. Being a non type-S, the silencing on the shorter stem is amazing. It brings the tactility up even higher and makes it nearly a linear with a great bottom out feeling.
    It sounds great, it works on all my devices, it’s easy to transport, it’s a great format that keeps my hands in place for the most part. And, the wireless connectivity is also fantastic and reliable.
    I can take it into the office (as you mentioned) and people are not only unbothered, but I’ve also converted a few others to the same board.

    Well, I can say that this hobby isn't interesting anymore at least for myself. I still follow some creators like Taeha Types, alexotos, or Lightning Keyboards but for the hobby, I have finished + I don't have the same excitement like before.. back then when I realized that there was a way to make a good thocc sound by applying some mods in a cheap price.
    If you still follow this hobby, yeah I hope you do well!
