I finally figured out who the NPC Bonnie Jean Wilbur (Zelda's VA) voices. She's Brinda, the midwestern lady in Faramore's tavern who wants the starry earrings and gives you the health canteen. And as Vinny was told, yeah, Jeffret Rath (Link) is also Skelvis, the skeleton Elvis dude. Very cool, because I would not have realized that unless I was told; the voices they're doing for those NPCs are really something! Like Vinny said in the stream, if they're interested in doing more VA work, I would absolutely love to see them appear in more games.
Also i don't know if Vinny reads the comments on these videos, but he really should open next stream by just entering Daimur's Lair; there's an NPC _right_ at the beginning he can talk to that will start a chain reaction to him getting a very important upgrade.

You act like Vinny's music ramblings is a bad thing, considering his knowledge about music is extremely impressive. like even if you don't care for it, it's still fun hearing Vinny talk about something that he genuinely enjoys, maybe even learn something you wouldn't know other wise.

I love Vinny's music talks, the overlap between video game fans and music fans is pretty small, so it's rare I get to enjoy both at once
26:12 - I have to agree; the original CD-I Zeldas were definitely NOT poorly animated. They used an actual animation crew from post-Soviet Russia (and USSR was always solid at classic animation) for an outsource, it's having barely any art direction and weirdly translating hand-drawn into MSPaint pixel type graphics that gave the games most of the uncanny valley vibes. Animation Magic later went on to hone their art with other games, like e.g. Mutant Rampage Bodyslam and I.M. Meen (which look way better and less jittery, resembling late Soviet animation standards more, compared to Zelda games), got accepted by BLIZZARD to make an (alas, cancelled) OFFICIAL WARCRAFT POINT-AND-CLICK SPIN-OFF, and later their staff got their way into many other gaming and animation projects! Their story is truly a legend of the most epic grind.
I imagine the language barrier also played a major role - the script was in English, and so the animators had at best a translated version, which probably left out important information and context, as well as pacing and tone. So they were animating blindly for the most part.
Maybe not poorly animated on effort alone; but their constant animating on 1s at least on the CD-I games definately isn't the best for workload or timing. There's a good reason why most things in animation are done on 2s and 3s; not only it's less frames, you can manipulate the weight of actions instead of everything feeling like jello.
CDI-zelda and Lord of the Clans was the same animation studio? Neat!
Eh, I don’t blame anyone for calling them bad, maybe not from a technical standpoint, I sure wouldn’t know how to animate like that, but the end result is undeniably bizarre,
The way camera angles shift, the way characters move, character designs being really weird.
It’s like the voice acting, from a lot of angles it’s not that bad, but in the ways it counts it is really bad. But that might just be how bizarre the dialogue is or the direction of the actors.
As an animation wingnut I'm a huge defender of the cdi cutscenes.. like yeah, there's some bizarre pauses and timing in some spots, but some sequences are just insanely detailed and animated on ones entirely. Zooming in and out of a character is so fucking difficult to do, drawing hands is extremely difficult to do, and both are done in the games cutscenes nonstop. Some sequences in both cdi games are actually insanely well animated, I think that one robot-looking dude comes to mind, shit is so geometric and buttery smooth. Its really interesting to see fully animated fmv in a game so weird and old, and clearly it has appeal even with all its inconsistency and jank.
Nothing will make you realize that the 'style' is really really difficult until you try to make your own 'cdi style' cutscenes.. I've been messing around with the style a bit more these days (Im stupidly attempting to make a few scenes from The Room into fully believable cdi cutscenes and it is fucking mental how many frames it takes to 'look right'). Its why some scenes in Arnette are clearly utilizing some shortcuts like using a 2.5d (3d?) looking rig in some shots to get some of that zoom in and zoom out motion (idk who that animator is but kudos to you, super cool technique I really love it)
This rant didnt add anything of value, but for sure the russian animation influence is felt... that iconic linear pose to pose movement is very very Russian and very nostalgic to me as someone who studied and binged a lot of that stuff in my baby art career lol
Game got updated to 1.1.0 today. Good stuff.
The Arzette community quickly discovered that there is tech to learn with some of the powerups.
And yes, there are a couple intentional sequence break secrets in this. One of them is required for a secret achievement.
Patch fixes my only (small) gripe with the game: now the NPC introductory cutscene plays the first time you talk to em even if you have the item.
@@masternorg Yup, that was much needed. I'm glad they fixed that so we get a chance to see demon girl's intro cutscene on stream.
@@masternorg My favourite part is that it's still optional; you can create an empty text file in the game's installation directory named "sceneskip.txt" and it'll switch back to v1.0.0's cutscene behaviour.
Nice for when you're on your umpteenth run of the game and you're practicing speeding through it as quickly as possible.

Vinny's got a point by saying this game is a massive risk. There have been comments and reviews that say outside the novelty of it being a CD-i Zelda throwback that doesn't suck, this game doesn't have much to offer. In particular certain reviews note the gameplay itself is "simple" or "basic", which is a step above the CD-i Zelda games, but it does make one wonder if anyone who doesn't really care or know about CD-i Zelda would bother with this game otherwise. I suppose what I'm getting at is that it's an incredibly niche game, and it makes me feel good to hear all the positive buzz surrounding it. I'm hoping that word-of-mouth will care it to being a bigger success.
The game is incredibly charming, even outside of familiarity with the source material. I kinda love all these weirdo characters and this universe, even removed from the greater context of the Zelda CD-i games. I hope other people feel similarly.

As someone that doesn't know anything about Zelda CD-i, other than some memes, I think the characters and wacky animations are super fun, also the sprites and backgrounds for the games are extremely well made so it's clear that this game goes beyond the "haha remember funny bad old game" gimmick and a lot of passion was put into it, of course passion projects don't always make money but I hope everyone involved in this is satisfied with the results :)

I've noticed that the main character isn't hilarious or psychotic like Link and Zelda but is instead a totally normal good person who won't GOOD after murdering somebody. I was unsure about that at first but it is honestly funny how it feels like a regular person is suddenly in that ytp world and has to react to all those insane people.
I love her reactions to Not-Link's antics. And also, how she instinctively draws her sword at the weird old man at 24:18

I like the animations in this game, it reminds me of something you mostly only see in old cartoons, where the animations themselves are funny, and not just a way of telling a joke that can be told through other means.
All I know about Mr. Beast is the thumbnails and ads that show up, but I always notice that forced, joyless smile. The eyes give it away.

(1:10:00) Another Wii U exclusive was Art Academy: Home Studio which actually worked really well as a teaching tool. Was download only, so unless it gets ported there's no legitimate way to get it since the Wii U shop channel was closed.
I hope Jeffrey Rath (Link) and Bonnie Jean Wilbur (Zelda) have made good livings outside of voice acting, but it's honestly so funny knowing that they both did the CDI games, did _no other voice acting_ for _30 years_ (except one other project for Bonnie), then jumped _right_ back on the saddle for Arzette just for the meme (and hopefully a good paycheck), lol

Not only the Arzette game replicated the Zelda CD-i gameplay and the art style, but the cutscenes are spot-on that it's like a love letter to UA-cam Poop.
What helped with the gameplay replication, was that the dev's previous work was remastering the CDI 2d Zelda games.
That remastered CDI engine was most likely used to make arzette.
I'd love to see a Castlevania-like from this developer.

Very funny vinny mentioned shantae at the end there, that's exactly who the princess reminded me of last stream, I ended up looking up fighting game female and eventually found it. Couldn't remember the name but the character stuck. Love the music, animation, and voice acting in this game.
I was hoping the game would turn into a Metroidvania so seeing hints of it, does make me happy!

We briefly had a CD-i growing up. The Wand of Gamelon was actually my first Legend of Zelda game, how's that for a first impression! Also had Burn:Cycle, The 7th Guest, some Golf game and a copy of the move Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country but that's all I remember of it.
I really liked this game though backtracking is a bit intense.
This game is weirdly charming. It certainly really knows how to laugh at itself.

Zelda's VA voices the opening narrator (and Dopply has mentioned that she voices some other NPC's, though I don't know which ones), and Link's VA voices the tutorial narrator and Skelvis.
The backgrounds in this game are giving me serious _Monkey Island Special Edition_ vibes, with the exception of the ones that are good enough to be more in line with how I _wish_ the backgrounds in those games looked. The island ones stand out as the best so far.
