Thank you for the thorough review! One thing I haven't been able to confirm looking through the manual or in your video, and others, is if the receiver will record to itself or if it must be connected to a camera or other device to record the audio. I know the transmitters will record locally but curious if I always have to have the receiver connected to something of if the system will work standalone. I'd like to have a track, perhaps the "Ms" mode on the transmitter, and also have the receiver record as well, without a phone or camera. Or even just the mic/transmitter by itself without the receiver at all.
Receiver does not have a mic on it only the transmitters. I went to NAB this week and got to talk to a brand with some interesting looking stuff. Hoping for some units to test with a mic on the receiver and has Sony Hot Shoe with zero cables.
Thanks for the response. I didn't mean to ask if the receiver had a mic on it, rather if it had its own memory to store a recording without being plugged in to a camera or phone.
The lav he’s talking about for the DJI is Shure MVL Lavalier $69 Amazon. Here’s my take after 20 years in film and video production industry. Tech evolves, and I know we all try to save a buck; but you will never know how good something is until you put it in your hands. I like the DJI because of the extra options. The lav attachment is shady to me but it’ll be great for gorilla film making & hiding the lav. If you’re going to do a big project for a client you may get away with this but I would use XLR lavs. More of a solid sound and I would never just record through the camera. Always record separate. Good review
I only have had experience with pro UHF wireless. I really don't understand why the average UA-camr would want a wireless system. You have added layers of complexity to your work -- batteries and charging, potential for drop outs, syncing recorded audio if breakups occur-- For the fast 5 years I have used pocket recorders from Tascam and Zoom. The Tascams get the most use. I only have to put in a fresh AAA battery and ready to go for a day of use. I have never had any issues during a shoot. I don't know why anyone would want to add this layer of complexity to their production. But, the review was good and both units sound good to me. Cheers
Honestly I rarely use the built in audio recording i don't want to deal with syncing audio, but its nice to have if something goes wrong. My friend has been using the built in audio recording and man.......syncing just takes so much time to sort through all the audio and video clips. It is only great for backup, but ideally you never want to use it. Good thoughts! Thanks for watching!
@@pauldittus depends on budget and needs also what camera system you use. I use Sony and the new DJI mic 2 with the DJI hotshoe for Sony was a must for me….no cables. Hey buddy, question. When outdoor vlogging with the action 4 and the x5 what settings should i use? Mono or stereo? What gain should i set the action 4 too? Do i need to use backup audio setting? Anything else you can think of please let me know. Thank you so much
I would leave the X5 at level 2 or 3…..I just do mono (with 1 mic) I use stereo with two mics (so each mic is panned two one side and I can separate them). For me I don’t really use safety. I use the internal record at the same time for sure. I am getting an action 4 soon I believe. How does the X5 work with USB-C into the action 4?
@@PaulFeinberg it connects super easy directly into the action 4 usb-c port on the side. Although you can attach the reciever also to the top of a cage if you buy one for the action then use usb c cable. The action 4 is incredible btw, really impressed how well and how easy it works.
X5 because it has internal recording, the ability to plug-in an external Lav, and can plug it up to a smart phone without a crazy long cable coming out of it.
you can plug the transmitters up to a computer via USB-C and it acts like a USB flash drive. You just grab the audio files off of it. Of course as long as you press the record button on the side of the transmitter for it to record internally.
Yes, ran out of time to show tests in the video. Both DJI and Fulaim can plug in external lav. The DJI is very picky with what lav models will not make background hiss. The Fulaim I have no issues with the lavs that I own (where the DJI dose hiss with my lavs).
@@WillNewcomb not released yet that is why. Ya I have been super happy with X5 (actually sold my DJI system lol)….the X3 is only USB-C & Lightning though no 3.5mm.
Im not sure about the Fulaim, Ive listened to two reviews were it sounded tinny and not very good. One of the reviewers actually sent it back. Can I ask did you pay for your Fulaim mic.
I paid for it to do this review and then full aim found me after this video and sent me another one for free (then I used that free one for a giveaway). I think the full aim sounds thinner than the DJI mic so slightly. But the price is so good. It’s hard to beat and I can fix it in post. It can’t hurt just to buy it on Amazon. Try it out and if you don’t like it, just return it. No cost.
Which one of two mics being used in completely the wrong way sounds better? All you hear in that first section is the clipping from overloading them, They are lav mics, both sound awful in front of your mouth.
I've listened to some Rode Wireless ME reviews and it's sounded better than the X5. Could you do a comparison? I now have the X5 for use with my iphone12pm. Do you have any suggestions about settings etc? Blessings.
If I could get my hands on one I would for sure review it. Volume on the x5 on the lowest and only use noise cancellation if in really loud environments. Once recorded drop the files into Adobe Podcast beta (just Google it) I don’t believe you need a Adobe subscription while it’s in beta but it works wonders for auto good sound.
With further testing I've stopped using the noise reduction and instead use Brusfri in Lumafusion. I try to keep the mic close to my mouth by clipping it high up near my neck on my shirt.
@@WillNewcomb Yes I don't use internal noise reduction for the same reason. Always get the best sound closer to your mouth for sure. I also use adobe podcast to upload the audio and it makes it sound really good. I don't believe you have to have a paid adobe account to use it at this time.
Thank you for this video, I am almost sold on the X5! - A couple of questions though, can the X5 act like a USB-C audio interface plugged into a laptop? - and how secure is the wind shield attachement (it keeps falling off my Rode Wireless 1 which is annoying!)?
