Just when I thought this review couldn't get any better, you start shooting a scene in Fremlin Walk 😂Outstanding! Merry Christmas mate, hope you have a good one!
Man I love your reviews! Im not buying anything without a replaceable battery ever again. Even with a good warranty on the battery, it's too much trouble sending a unit into warranty after spending time arguing with the warranty customer service (looking at you RODE). Too many bad batteries, wasted time, and time without the product you paid for.
I guess the chances of such devices using the same battery is minimal, especially when so tiny. And if the company has to offer spare batteries for customers to fit themselves, then they have to make and store them to meet worst-case-scenario needs, and of course the manufacture would need to be phased so that they didn't die of old age before being sent out. So one way or another, the environmental effect of making more batteries than needed might not be good, and you can bet the supplier would up the cost of the device to cover the wastage. So while the whole concept is well intentioned, in reality it's debatable in terms of real benefit. Maybe.
Great overview and breakdown of what each microphone is good at! Too bad there isn’t “one to rule them all”, however in a few years that hopefully changes! I hope your life is making a turn for the better, we all go though rough times, just know that there are people who care about you even if they only know you as “the video drone cat man on UA-cam”! Happy Holidays!
I've been playing around with the DJI Mic Mini, and it's got two noise reduction options. For a sound that feels more real, you could try the lower setting-it makes a difference. A lot of wireless mics do noise canceling, but the DJI Mic Mini is tiny and still manages to surprise me with how well it cuts out the background noise. It's pretty cool for something so small!
If you do pro or client work, the Rode Wireless Pro and Dji Mic ii are your choices. For smartphone only, get the Rode Wireless Micro. If you have the osmo cameras, get the DJi mic mini. The Larc 2 is great if you on a budget.
Interested in the wireless go 2. I have it but have trouble making it work with my Nikon DSLR. Anyone have a link to a video about how to set it up properly? I have better success with the DJI mini 2 mic.
What a great Christmas present from Mr Bloom! Disappointed my Hollyland Lark Max didn’t make the 32 bit cut but I’m watching the whole thing anyway 🤷🏽♂️
Great and entertaining review, thanks. At times with all the little lights on, you looked like a walking Christmas tree. Perhaps you hoped that someone would leave a gift at your feet. Anyway, there is one use of these types of device, especially when very small, which I seem to have uniquely demonstrated here, namely using a stereo pair of wireless mics as a binaural (or pseudo binaural) recording device. I clip my Rode Wireless Micro transmitters either side of a baseball cap, and use my phone to record using the excellent "Field Recorder" app, which offers more options that almost any Android app out there for any purpose, with huge meters. The mics end up close to my ears and are relatively inconspicuous on a black cap, especially when wrapped with a bit of insulation tape. And the stereo image and audio quality are excellent, with no wires involved. Maybe give that a try, if time weighs heavy on your hands post-Christmas - and I hope you enjoy the season.
Listening on a pair of Sennheiser HD 650's through a FiiO Olympus 2 DAC and I personally keep favoring the Rode Wireless Pro - really feel it's got some legit honesty to its sound. Though the low-end feels heavy but - Sennheiser headphones tend to pump the lows I think. Want to hear against a Sennheiser G4 pack/lav sample. Also: Your mom's a legend also. Love her vibe. Hope she and ya'll are doing well, sir. Love this sort of video. Love the experience. Also: Go Storyblocks.
I think the Hollyland Lark M2 mobile stereo option is app specific. I believe if you use an app like the Final Cut Camera or Blackmagic App, you can split the audio to stereo.
Thanks Philip and Merry Christmas. I’ve been happy with my Rode Wireless Go II with lav, I just long for an option on a less congested band than 2.4ghz.
Really useful Philip. Thanks for sharing. Would have loved to hear your thoughts on the new Sennheiser Profile mic and how it compares with all these others.
Dude I love technology so much that I'm sold on so much of this stuff and never use any of it not once but just love technology so much. I'm a freaking Nerd🤷🏽♂️. Ive bought so many items in the past. I have to refrain myself.
I use the Rode Wireless Pro all the time and it’s a great bit of kit apart from the size and the lavs. Lav pops off its clamp too easily and I’m no fan of the forward facing pickup location. But once replaced with a different lav then it’s far better.
In terms of cinematic film production, the Wireless Pros are a truly wonderful product. 40+ hours internal 32-bit float has made the established industry standard Tx/Rx set-ups redundant, at half the size/cost. And they can record a timecode track onto any camera with a mic input!
They're great but you still can't blindly trust internal recording or 32 bit and disregard shooting for safety. I had them for two shoots before a Tx crapped out and couldnt be accessed to copy the internal recordings. During the second shoot I was having some out of range issues and did extra takes for safety, this ended up being the only audio usable!
Nice video, but why doesn't anyone use the PicoMic? I have two systems with 4 microphones and used them for over 5 years. They are the smallest and have a straight eq-curve. Their version 3 compare to these others would have been interesting.
Know you are very busy, but would have liked your opinion on this new DJI/Rode competitor which was just released recently. On the fence if I should go for Sennheiser signature sound only and ignoring the bells and whistles of 32-bit float.
Yep. It’s not great. They could all in theory have swappable battery modules, even the small ones. But I guess the very low price for those means they won’t bother. All my higher end wireless mice (not 2.4ghz) have replacement battery packs. The main thing is actually running out of juice during a shoot. With some offering just 6 hours of battery life that means you need to have additional TXs which is what I have with the DJI Mic 2 for that reason. They are my most used ones due to their Pocket 3 connection.
I don't prefer Rode anymore because it requires connecting to a computer for every setting. You have to make settings from the screen or buttons on it. That's why I don't prefer any Rode product. I bought Rode Wireless Go 1, it was the same. I bought Wireless Go 2, it was the same. I bought Rode NT USB+, it was the same. In other words, Rode needs to completely abandon the process of installing applications on the computer. By the way, Wireless Go 1 creates background noise. Wireless Go 2 creates crackling and disconnection. I haven't tried the Pro model, but Go2 no longer works on Samsung phones without Snapdragon. I'm creating 3 studios at home. One is for the kitchen, recipes. The other is for desk narrations with RGB backgrounds, the third is for live broadcasts on the computer and I will buy cameras for these. The last 2 locations will include vehicle shootings and vlog shootings. Vlog can be done with a phone, an action camera is needed for the vehicle. For this reason, I'm thinking of DJI Mic Mini or DJI Mic 2. But I couldn't decide. I'll use NT USB+ on the computer, I couldn't decide what to use for my phone and studios.

For example, I am camping, I use a standard device so that I can hear the sounds of birds in nature, etc., but I have to walk along the highway and I should be able to turn on the noise cancellation with a single button. It is very illogical to use a computer or phone for this. Disconnect it from the camera, connect it to the computer or phone, plug it back in for 2 minutes, fix it, these are just torture.

All mics that use standard Bluetooth are 16khz. So none of them.
The M2s .. Nothing beats the form factor and the price ..

I really like my Lark M2 system but I agree that not having stereo with USB-C and Lighting is a huge drawback.
