Why don't you soak the pellets? I have used pine pellets for horse stalls and the pellets are still very absorbent even after being initially soaked. By soaking them the bedding is softer, they fluff up and you save money and you can still control dust by taking a spray bottle to the top between cleanings.
It would be better to cover all those hard pellets temporarily should be ok but just picture your self walking all your life on hard wood pellets is not confortable at all you should cover them with fleece or chande bedding.
Animals are different than humans. We walk on 2 legs/feet. We are heavy and all our weight is centered on one of the most delicate/tender places on our body, our feet. Yes, walking on pellets everyday would be very uncomfortable. But animals like Gp's walk on 4 legs/feet which means their weight is evenly distributed in a wide area/s instead of just one like humans. Also, they are light animals, and so therefor they don't hurt their paws with heavily built bodies. Guinea pigs dig, in anything, dirt, wood, etc. They are animals that are born in the wild, who walk on the hard cold earth, they don't NEED blankets. I do however buy little teeny tiny beds and put them in there sometimes, just because I think its cute when they lay on them!
great video. I'm thinking do this and fleece combo.
