Only one I'm guilty of is the first one, but not badly. I just rest a finger or two on it so I don't take long to shift when I need to, but I don't keep much weight on it at all because my elbow is always on the center console. I've been drive a manual car and truck since I was learning to drive. I'm 26 now, and everything that was talked about in this video is true from a mechanics prospective, since my uncle is our family mechanic. He says exactly the same thing, and I've figure this stuff out on my own too with all the years I've been drive these vehicles. These are older cars though, so I never knew there was a hill assist in some of these newer cars. That would be a very good thing to have.

Great video with some good advice here for people with less experience. :-) High gears and low revs with lots of throttle is called 'Labouring an engine'. Think of it like a push bike with 27 gears. Being in 1st gear is easy peasy and it doesn't take much pressure to turn the crank, no matter how fast or strong you peddle. Whereas 27th gear and forcing the gears and chain with all your leg power will put more strain on the mechanical components. The lower the gear means a lot less torque through the system. I just started driving a 5 speed 4 cylinder manual Nissan and these videos helped, especially your speed shift video. Being comfortable driving a manual in St Louis is a little difficult because most of the drivers here are extremely reckless and aggressive, but hopefully with time driving a stick becomes natural

It can be either because it's used for emergency AND parking AND hill start AND power slide 3 of those 4 things have nothing to do with parking, which is why it's also called a handbrake. Who cares?
I usually just put mines in first gear and turn the wheels to hit the curb if it fails. Only on an incline/decline will I actively use my E-brake/Parking brake.

How 'bout not leaving the transmission in gear with the clutch pedal depressed while waiting at a stoplight to prevent the throwout bearing from wearing out prematurely (shift into neutral & release the clutch pedal instead).
When you are waiting at a set of lights, don't leave your car in gear with the clutch pressed in, take it out of gear and use the E brake as mentioned on the hill starts. The reason being is that when you hold your clutch depressed for too long you will start to wear down the throwout bearing and when that thing goes you will find it hard shifting gears and might need a new clutch.

There are a few issues with what's said here. One is to do with lugging in-general, in that it doesn't just involve throttle. Some engines, especially rotaries, really hate to be short-shifted, and running in too high a gear can seriously damage them. Even if you aren't accelerating noticeably, what's important are your car's shift points for whatever you're doing, and most cars have several for different circumstances. Secondly, hills. Now, riding the clutch should be avoided whenever possible, but sometimes it is necessary to do certain tasks, such as parking on a hill or maneuvering at extremely low speeds. And, when initiating a hill-start, there are a wealth of techniques to use. The handbrake technique you mentioned is the easiest and most common, but some drivers will insist on a foot-brake technique, where you use your right foot to brake and feather the throttle simultaneously. It's difficult, and I don't find it particularly effective, but some people swear by it. Thirdly, if your engine has enough torque and a good bottom-end and the incline is shallow enough, you may be able to just muscle it by quickly throttling up and releasing the clutch before you begin to roll back. Overall, these are good tips for novices, and while I did learn a slight bit, I'm not the best myself. It does seem quite thrift of advice for more advanced levels, but I suppose this is more of an entry-level topic anyway.
Your concern with "early shifting" I feel is more relevant on an engine that doesn't have allot of torque. I do agree in general but the car I got recently (8th gen accord coupe 3.5 EX-L) has enough torque to easily shift at 2500 rpm and does really well. Now if I was stuck in a 4 banger I wouldn't even think of doing this.

+Exact Scope if you're going to be stopped for more than a few seconds just have the car in neutral with your left foot off the clutch and right foot on the brake. Just put it in gear when you're about to get going again.
You forgot about down shifting to slow down, this can kill your compression and your clutch will live half its life. Truckers do this because they're towing 100+ thousands of pounds to not burn out the brakes, but those big diesel engines are built for the abuse.

For rule #2 . Not everyone has a working e brake, me included when I was learning. I think the best this to do is just to use the standard break as long as it is not a very steep hill or long time. Then just practice the hell out of your 1st gear on hills. Plus as a new manual driver it may be hard to remember to disengage your e brake and then foot on the break then clutch and 1st gear all in one motion.

Most of this was common sense I already knew because my father drove manuals a lot, but I'm trying to buy my first manual car now and wanted a refresher, thanks for the tips. When my father taught me how to drive stick I was guilty of clinging to the shifter and resting my foot on the clutch.
In this video, a few good habits to get into, and a lot of hearsay and opinions that aren't based on facts. "The engine builds up oil pressure too fast when you bog it" you do realize that the oil pump runs on RPM right? And at low RPM it has low pressure right? It's precisely because of the fact that OIL and WATER pumps run off engine RPM that bogging down your engine can cause OVERHEATING. If the engine is working hard, and the coolant and oil flows aren't fast because the rpm's are low, and most especially if the actual speed of the car isn't fast, like towing something, or struggling up a long mountain road, then you can overheat the car if you select too tall a gear. Car not overheating? Then you aren't damaging anything even if you're bogging, but you're a 5 speed noob. This video is the standard transmission version of those "You're brushing your teeth wrong" videos where someone repeats things they have been told without thinking about them or trying to understand the thing they are talking about.
Some of these are hard to really reach in practice. For example, my Ford Ranger has the same engine and transmission it came out of the factory with 21 years ago. It has went through 290,000 miles and 21 years of holding hills with the clutch and shifting off engine noise and speed(it has no tachometer). It still runs and shifts fine. My friend has one from 29 years ago with the stock and never rebuilt trans and engine. My dad has one the same age as mine with 330,000 miles on it and he does the same stuff. It's all about care and not banging on them, that's the secret to long lasting vehicles.
I have always heard people say not to rest your hand on the shifter, but since you have to shift so much in town, it is something I have always done. I run through 4 gears by the time I am going 25. My truck has a quarter of a million miles on it and still haven't had any transmission issues. So I am thinking that even if it does cause a problem, it has lasted long enough that I don't mind.
e brake on a hill? just pull it out of gear and put your foot on the brake then when your ready to go put it back in gear and get a higher rev and start letting the clutch out.
Jj George thats stupid as hell. Im from Europe and I drive manuals only. Doing it like you suggest, puts much more stress on the clutch and it wears it out faster. It might seem like you are badass for doing it or that you are some expert on cars, but in reality its hurting the clutch in the long run. While driving off up a hill using the handbrake, is less damaging for the clutch because the rear brakes actually take a lot of the load and weigth, since otherwise if you drive off whith high revs and clutch out, the clutch will also have to handle more counter force that pulls the car backwards down the hill. It has to overcome that force before it can start to move forward.
Andrej Flis I too drive a manual daily, and I don't have a handbrake. it's down on the floor and has a lever that you have to pull. I'm not trying to seem like a badass or anything, or an expert at all. but it is in essence doing the same thing as using the e brake. you do not have to be at a higher rev to take off, it just makes it easier.
if you can find the grab point immediately after letting off the brake and apply a small amount of gas youll get going fine too and it'll be easier on the clutch. but i guess it depends on what you drive too
I would add "Don't down shift to slow down" It's a lot cheaper to replace worn out brake pads than it is to replace a burned out clutch. I've told this to everybody I know that drives a manual and everybody is always surprised when I do.
Down shifting is just fine to slow down, its not putting wear on your clutch if you do it right, and its just called engine braking. The engine is built to have pressure and torque when given the chance. Just do it right and its fine.

My boyfriend has been driving manual for 13 years straight and I had a 13 year gap from the first time I learned. I know all about how a manual transmission works and how to drive it right including what NOT to do. Once I finally bought a new car with a manual transmission, I tried to teach him about all the wrong doing he’s been doing for 13 years... he gave me sooo much shit because as he says, “you’re telling me how to drive a stick? I’ve been driving this for years! You just now got a car and and trying to tell me what I’m doing wrong”. 🙄 Men. He can’t stand when I know more about what “a man” should know than he does. I just learn how to drive stick in my eco boost mustang 2020 and the only thing that is hard for me is down shift third to second cuz I don’t know how do it smoothie 🤔but the things that u say in the video I don’t really do it so I think this really helps me a lot

This videos old but I’d like to say in my 2000 Toyota crown (jzs171) only came automatic but was swapped to a R154 manual 5 speed. There is no dead peddle and I do notice I rest my foot on the clutch but I wouldn’t call it resting it… anyways I have to just bend my knee until I have to shift it’s kinda annoying lol. Well let me start out by saying i agree with you however i live in the UK and in our driving lessons / test we are expected to learn and demonstrate "Clutch Control" Which is doing exactly this holding the car on a hill using the clutch for a short period of time. My 2018 limited does have “hill assist”, it also has the auto lane change turn signal blinkers that I also saw in another video about the BRZ where the guy said it was a “fail” that a “newer” car didn’t have that feature.
ok the "dont rest your foot on the clutch" I learned the semi-hard way First big boy car (G6 GTP) I would hold the clutch down at stop lights like a fucking noob. So now, my throwout bearing makes really annoying rattly/rumbly noises when the clutch isn't pressed, but my clutch is still in perfect condition. Inevitably, I'm going to have to replace the still-good-condition clutch because i fucked my throwout bearing before i learned not to hold the clutch at stops.

like he said, you wreck the throwout bearing, that's the bearing that the clutch fork presses against the clutch diaphragm, if you hold down the clutch at a stop, you are putting maximum pressure on that bearing the whole time you are stopped, if you release the clutch in neutral you are putting no pressure on that bearing, which was only designed to be used while shifting

michael Lawrence Since it's a separate brake system than your regular brakes, if your regular brakes give out for some reason, you pull the E brake. it's a parking brake, but it's also a just in case measure

I'm definitely guilty of #1 (resting hand on shifter), but I don't put much pressure at all on it so I'm not worried. I also am "guilty" of #5 (continuously touching foot to clutch), but there are multiple reasons why I must do this. I have long legs which makes using the dummy pedal difficult in city driving and to be honest, probably dangerous considering where I live. I also usually have an ankle holster on, which would make it even more difficult. When I'm in 5th and know I'll not likely need to downshift or stop for awhile, I'll move my foot over. In Phoenix, AZ, you really need to be able to shift quickly in traffic, especially in rush hour. Your foot would fall off if you had to swap it back and forth, hundreds (yes, HUNDREDS of times) in an average 30 mile commute. That being said, I'm very aware of my clutch free-play, and while my foot is touching the clutch, I am not applying enough pressure to get even close to the end of that free-play. I've put 70k miles on my clutch and everything has been just fine.
2,500 RPMs is considered an early shift? The optimal shift points in a manual are the same as an automatic. If you are shifting at 3,000 RPM in a car that red-lines at 6k, you are burning excessive fuel and putting more stress and wear on your engine. If you find you have to goose the throttle, you can always downshift. And that brings me to my next point. You omitted the one thing that will cause more damage to your clutch than just about anything. Never downshift without rev matching. This will burn your synchros quickly as you release the clutch and the engine speed significantly mismatches wheel speed.
Glenn K - incorrect. Two identical cars can have the same red line in either automatic or manual, but totally different gear ratios. Please learn about transmissions before you comment.
Yes they will have different gear ratios but they will also have different final drive ratios and when you factor the two together, your ideal shift points are the same assuming you have the same number of gears. If you have an 8 speed automatic vs a 7 speed manual, yes the shift speeds will be different but the RPMs will be pretty consistent. Check your owner's manual and it will tell you ideal shift points. I can promise it won't be 3k. If someone wants to stress their engine (especially when cold) and burn excessive fuel, that is there choice.
on flat roads or down hill, I shift at 2k. And down shift when it starts to drop below 1500. I'll shift at 2500, 3k, or 3500 depending on the hill or if I'm merging on the highway with moderate traffic. worked fine in my 2000 focus zx3, mazdaspeed protege, fiesta se, and my current fiesta st.
I don't ever sit with my truck in gear. Probably comes from wearing out a couple throwout bearings in my gremlin, but from deceleration to a stop and until I start moving again, my vehicle is in neutral. My ranger also really doesn't like to go into first unless it's sitting near still.

Man, trying to hill start in my old truck was such a pain in the ass. Think of San Francisco grade hills in a truck that will brake traction if you use too much go peddle when trying to engage the clutch and you have some ass hat automatic driver right up your chuff. I enjoy the hill assist on my 2011 WRX. I know a lot of people don't but there are times I count on it... then again Its caused me to stall a few times lol. I agree with your 5 points!

It depends on the situation. If you are between cities driving 600+ miles a day you switch your grip all the time and 90% of the time only one hand is on the wheel. In the city with heavy traffic you may need to use both hands depending on what is happening around you.

On a hill, i do this: transmission in neutral, right foot on the brake and left foot on footrest, when light goes green - clutch in, first gear, clutch out a little until i feel it grabbing, then right foot off the brake and on gas, build some revs and and let some more clutch off and away I go. (sorry for my english)

yeah, i know its got quite a different ratio for starting but what most people do is short shift 1st to 2nd and lug the engine in 2nd. using more of 1st is better than lugging in 2nd... also remember he's driving a sports car. the 1st gear in that wont have such a short ratio as a normal car that needs to be capable of towing ect.

Only one I'm guilty of is the first one, but not badly. I just rest a finger or two on it so I don't take long to shift when I need to, but I don't keep much weight on it at all because my elbow is always on the center console. I've been drive a manual car and truck since I was learning to drive. I'm 26 now, and everything that was talked about in this video is true from a mechanics prospective, since my uncle is our family mechanic. He says exactly the same thing, and I've figure this stuff out on my own too with all the years I've been drive these vehicles. These are older cars though, so I never knew there was a hill assist in some of these newer cars. That would be a very good thing to have.

High gears and low revs with lots of throttle is called 'Labouring an engine'.
Think of it like a push bike with 27 gears. Being in 1st gear is easy peasy and it doesn't take much pressure to turn the crank, no matter how fast or strong you peddle. Whereas 27th gear and forcing the gears and chain with all your leg power will put more strain on the mechanical components. The lower the gear means a lot less torque through the system. Exactly the same as our dear cars :-)

I just started driving a 5 speed 4 cylinder manual Nissan and these videos helped, especially your speed shift video. Being comfortable driving a manual in St Louis is a little difficult because most of the drivers here are extremely reckless and aggressive, but hopefully with time driving a stick becomes natural

Good video. Driven a stick for 50+ years and your advice is spot on. But please STOP calling the parking brake an E-brake. It can be used in an emergency but its primary use is for parking. Particularly in a standard.
It can be either because it's used for emergency AND parking AND hill start AND power slide 3 of those 4 things have nothing to do with parking, which is why it's also called a handbrake. Who cares?
I usually just put mines in first gear and turn the wheels to hit the curb if it fails. Only on an incline/decline will I actively use my E-brake/Parking brake.

When you are waiting at a set of lights, don't leave your car in gear with the clutch pressed in, take it out of gear and use the E brake as mentioned on the hill starts. The reason being is that when you hold your clutch depressed for too long you will start to wear down the throwout bearing and when that thing goes you will find it hard shifting gears and might need a new clutch.
Tip #6: buy a wink mirror for maximum JDM

Love the video! Really good tips. I've been using my clutch on hills like a fool haha my Eclipse floated into gear around 25-2800rpm when cruising but my Accord loves 3000 or higher
There are a few issues with what's said here. One is to do with lugging in-general, in that it doesn't just involve throttle. Some engines, especially rotaries, really hate to be short-shifted, and running in too high a gear can seriously damage them. Even if you aren't accelerating noticeably, what's important are your car's shift points for whatever you're doing, and most cars have several for different circumstances.
Secondly, hills. Now, riding the clutch should be avoided whenever possible, but sometimes it is necessary to do certain tasks, such as parking on a hill or maneuvering at extremely low speeds. And, when initiating a hill-start, there are a wealth of techniques to use. The handbrake technique you mentioned is the easiest and most common, but some drivers will insist on a foot-brake technique, where you use your right foot to brake and feather the throttle simultaneously. It's difficult, and I don't find it particularly effective, but some people swear by it. Thirdly, if your engine has enough torque and a good bottom-end and the incline is shallow enough, you may be able to just muscle it by quickly throttling up and releasing the clutch before you begin to roll back.
Overall, these are good tips for novices, and while I did learn a slight bit, I'm not the best myself. It does seem quite thrift of advice for more advanced levels, but I suppose this is more of an entry-level topic anyway.
Your concern with "early shifting" I feel is more relevant on an engine that doesn't have allot of torque. I do agree in general but the car I got recently (8th gen accord coupe 3.5 EX-L) has enough torque to easily shift at 2500 rpm and does really well. Now if I was stuck in a 4 banger I wouldn't even think of doing this.

You forgot about down shifting to slow down, this can kill your compression and your clutch will live half its life. Truckers do this because they're towing 100+ thousands of pounds to not burn out the brakes, but those big diesel engines are built for the abuse.

For rule #2 . Not everyone has a working e brake, me included when I was learning. I think the best this to do is just to use the standard break as long as it is not a very steep hill or long time. Then just practice the hell out of your 1st gear on hills. Plus as a new manual driver it may be hard to remember to disengage your e brake and then foot on the break then clutch and 1st gear all in one motion.
Put it in neutral too on the hill while foot is on the break, just in case it wasn't obvious to new drivers:)

Most of this was common sense I already knew because my father drove manuals a lot, but I'm trying to buy my first manual car now and wanted a refresher, thanks for the tips. When my father taught me how to drive stick I was guilty of clinging to the shifter and resting my foot on the clutch.

In this video, a few good habits to get into, and a lot of hearsay and opinions that aren't based on facts. "The engine builds up oil pressure too fast when you bog it" you do realize that the oil pump runs on RPM right? And at low RPM it has low pressure right?
It's precisely because of the fact that OIL and WATER pumps run off engine RPM that bogging down your engine can cause OVERHEATING. If the engine is working hard, and the coolant and oil flows aren't fast because the rpm's are low, and most especially if the actual speed of the car isn't fast, like towing something, or struggling up a long mountain road, then you can overheat the car if you select too tall a gear.
Car not overheating? Then you aren't damaging anything even if you're bogging, but you're a 5 speed noob.
This video is the standard transmission version of those "You're brushing your teeth wrong" videos where someone repeats things they have been told without thinking about them or trying to understand the thing they are talking about.
Some of these are hard to really reach in practice. For example, my Ford Ranger has the same engine and transmission it came out of the factory with 21 years ago. It has went through 290,000 miles and 21 years of holding hills with the clutch and shifting off engine noise and speed(it has no tachometer). It still runs and shifts fine. My friend has one from 29 years ago with the stock and never rebuilt trans and engine. My dad has one the same age as mine with 330,000 miles on it and he does the same stuff. It's all about care and not banging on them, that's the secret to long lasting vehicles.

I have always heard people say not to rest your hand on the shifter, but since you have to shift so much in town, it is something I have always done. I run through 4 gears by the time I am going 25. My truck has a quarter of a million miles on it and still haven't had any transmission issues. So I am thinking that even if it does cause a problem, it has lasted long enough that I don't mind.
e brake on a hill? just pull it out of gear and put your foot on the brake then when your ready to go put it back in gear and get a higher rev and start letting the clutch out.

Jj George thats stupid as hell. Im from Europe and I drive manuals only. Doing it like you suggest, puts much more stress on the clutch and it wears it out faster. It might seem like you are badass for doing it or that you are some expert on cars, but in reality its hurting the clutch in the long run. While driving off up a hill using the handbrake, is less damaging for the clutch because the rear brakes actually take a lot of the load and weigth, since otherwise if you drive off whith high revs and clutch out, the clutch will also have to handle more counter force that pulls the car backwards down the hill. It has to overcome that force before it can start to move forward.
Andrej Flis I too drive a manual daily, and I don't have a handbrake. it's down on the floor and has a lever that you have to pull. I'm not trying to seem like a badass or anything, or an expert at all. but it is in essence doing the same thing as using the e brake. you do not have to be at a higher rev to take off, it just makes it easier.
if you can find the grab point immediately after letting off the brake and apply a small amount of gas youll get going fine too and it'll be easier on the clutch. but i guess it depends on what you drive too

I would add "Don't down shift to slow down" It's a lot cheaper to replace worn out brake pads than it is to replace a burned out clutch. I've told this to everybody I know that drives a manual and everybody is always surprised when I do.
Down shifting is just fine to slow down, its not putting wear on your clutch if you do it right, and its just called engine braking. The engine is built to have pressure and torque when given the chance. Just do it right and its fine.

I know all about how a manual transmission works and how to drive it right including what NOT to do. Once I finally bought a new car with a manual transmission, I tried to teach him about all the wrong doing he’s been doing for 13 years... he gave me sooo much shit because as he says, “you’re telling me how to drive a stick? I’ve been driving this for years! You just now got a car and and trying to tell me what I’m doing wrong”. 🙄

This videos old but I’d like to say in my 2000 Toyota crown (jzs171) only came automatic but was swapped to a R154 manual 5 speed. There is no dead peddle and I do notice I rest my foot on the clutch but I wouldn’t call it resting it… anyways I have to just bend my knee until I have to shift it’s kinda annoying lol. But this was a great video. It explains a lot and verifies other things such as the e brake method for hills that I wasn’t sure was the correct way to go about starting on a hill
Just a quick thing i thought i would mention about your 2nd point about don't use the clutch to hold the car on a hill. Well let me start out by saying i agree with you however i live in the UK and in our driving lessons / test we are expected to learn and demonstrate "Clutch Control" Which is doing exactly this holding the car on a hill using the clutch for a short period of time. For some reason its seen as a good thing by instructors and shows vehicle control to a test examiner

My 2018 limited does have “hill assist”, it also has the auto lane change turn signal blinkers that I also saw in another video about the BRZ where the guy said it was a “fail” that a “newer” car didn’t have that feature.

First big boy car (G6 GTP) I would hold the clutch down at stop lights like a fucking noob.
So now, my throwout bearing makes really annoying rattly/rumbly noises when the clutch isn't pressed, but my clutch is still in perfect condition.
Inevitably, I'm going to have to replace the still-good-condition clutch because i fucked my throwout bearing before i learned not to hold the clutch at stops.
WigglingWaffles you can just do the throwout bearing if you're confident clutch is good. dont let anyone tell you other wise. its only recommended to replace clutch since they are obviously right next to each other

It may also be the input shaft bearing, my car developed that problem right after I bought it -.-
like he said, you wreck the throwout bearing, that's the bearing that the clutch fork presses against the clutch diaphragm, if you hold down the clutch at a stop, you are putting maximum pressure on that bearing the whole time you are stopped, if you release the clutch in neutral you are putting no pressure on that bearing, which was only designed to be used while shifting

I'm definitely guilty of #1 (resting hand on shifter), but I don't put much pressure at all on it so I'm not worried. I also am "guilty" of #5 (continuously touching foot to clutch), but there are multiple reasons why I must do this. I have long legs which makes using the dummy pedal difficult in city driving and to be honest, probably dangerous considering where I live. I also usually have an ankle holster on, which would make it even more difficult. When I'm in 5th and know I'll not likely need to downshift or stop for awhile, I'll move my foot over. In Phoenix, AZ, you really need to be able to shift quickly in traffic, especially in rush hour. Your foot would fall off if you had to swap it back and forth, hundreds (yes, HUNDREDS of times) in an average 30 mile commute. That being said, I'm very aware of my clutch free-play, and while my foot is touching the clutch, I am not applying enough pressure to get even close to the end of that free-play. I've put 70k miles on my clutch and everything has been just fine.

2,500 RPMs is considered an early shift? The optimal shift points in a manual are the same as an automatic. If you are shifting at 3,000 RPM in a car that red-lines at 6k, you are burning excessive fuel and putting more stress and wear on your engine. If you find you have to goose the throttle, you can always downshift. And that brings me to my next point. You omitted the one thing that will cause more damage to your clutch than just about anything. Never downshift without rev matching. This will burn your synchros quickly as you release the clutch and the engine speed significantly mismatches wheel speed.
Glenn K - incorrect. Two identical cars can have the same red line in either automatic or manual, but totally different gear ratios. Please learn about transmissions before you comment.
Yes they will have different gear ratios but they will also have different final drive ratios and when you factor the two together, your ideal shift points are the same assuming you have the same number of gears. If you have an 8 speed automatic vs a 7 speed manual, yes the shift speeds will be different but the RPMs will be pretty consistent. Check your owner's manual and it will tell you ideal shift points. I can promise it won't be 3k. If someone wants to stress their engine (especially when cold) and burn excessive fuel, that is there choice.

on flat roads or down hill, I shift at 2k. And down shift when it starts to drop below 1500. I'll shift at 2500, 3k, or 3500 depending on the hill or if I'm merging on the highway with moderate traffic. worked fine in my 2000 focus zx3, mazdaspeed protege, fiesta se, and my current fiesta st.
I don't ever sit with my truck in gear. Probably comes from wearing out a couple throwout bearings in my gremlin, but from deceleration to a stop and until I start moving again, my vehicle is in neutral. My ranger also really doesn't like to go into first unless it's sitting near still.

Think of San Francisco grade hills in a truck that will brake traction if you use too much go peddle when trying to engage the clutch and you have some ass hat automatic driver right up your chuff. or on hills, just be fast. On the clutch, move fast to the bitepoint while simultaneously pressing the gas, the once it gets going, slowly release clutch

It depends on the situation. If you are between cities driving 600+ miles a day you switch your grip all the time and 90% of the time only one hand is on the wheel. In the city with heavy traffic you may need to use both hands depending on what is happening around you.

On a hill, i do this: transmission in neutral, right foot on the brake and left foot on footrest, when light goes green - clutch in, first gear, clutch out a little until i feel it grabbing, then right foot off the brake and on gas, build some revs and and let some more clutch off and away I go. (sorry for my english)
come on mate, you go into first then rest your foot on the dead peddle? Then you are ruining your car and giving bad advise. 1st gear is a start off gear not a driving gear ( unless you are doing a racing start). keeping it in first for too long will ruin your engine.

yeah, i know its got quite a different ratio for starting but what most people do is short shift 1st to 2nd and lug the engine in 2nd. using more of 1st is better than lugging in 2nd... also remember he's driving a sports car. the 1st gear in that wont have such a short ratio as a normal car that needs to be capable of towing ect.

I, too, rest my foot very lightly on the clutch, only because it has a _huuuge_ dead zone way above the engaging area that makes me pull up my whole leg up every time I have to press it.
