I don’t think him knowing her as a child is that weird because that isn’t how he’s seeing her now. It would be different if he’d been anxiously waiting for the day she turns 18 so he could pounce, but she’s 27 and he hasn’t seen her in years. If two people had known each other since they were 5 and then when they were adults, they got together, that wouldn’t be weird because they no longer look at each other as 5 year olds. He hasn’t seen her in a while, she looks completely different, and he no longer looks at her the way he did when she was a baby, he looks at her as a 27 year old that he’s attracted to.

Monica has a lot of self-control: Richard was a sexy, charming, gorgeous, smart and funny man. I would have had a really hard time keeping my hands off him once I realized the attraction was mutual. Breaking up with him also showed a lot of strength of character and maturity. Walking away from a man like that, even with good reason, would have killed me.

When I first saw this, I didn't really see why people thought the pairing was weird. Monica was wise far beyond her years, sophisticated, and a mother to the friends, and so Richard was perfect for her.

But some guy that didn't live so close to them and that the parents used to visit or hang out without the kids... I understand why Monica would crush on him, and I understand he’s a beloved actor, but I think it’s really shady on his character’s part to have dated her. He’s a friend of her family and knew her since she was small. He watched her grow up...that’s super predatory. Glad she ended up with Chandler.
