I recall looking her up at one point because I loved that voice so much, but I think this is the last role she ever did. Maybe she decided voice acting wasn't for her? Kinda sad because she killed it!
There is someone else who voices a young Robin later in the series, unfortunately. Anzu Nagai's presence in this flashback is iconic and does a great job of making people forget that Nico Olivia is voiced by the same seiyu that does adult Nico Robin!
The lore in Robin's backstory is a turning point on the series, absolute gold.
Also the declaration of war towards the World Government will always be top 5 moments in this series. Absolute cinema.

One thing that isnt immediately obvious but gets me every time is that Robin is a grown ass woman.
Luffy and the others are just kids. Yes they can sink ships, can fight Marines, other dangerous pirates etc but they are still not even past their teenage years. Their blood is burning to follow their dreams and push back any obstacle in their way.
Robin is twice as old. You dont even need her past to give up on dreams or goals. Her entire life since she was 8 she has faced the entire world just to survive another day. To her, Crocodile was her last chance as far as she was concerned. She even begged Luffy to let her die in the ruins. Joining Luffy on random adventures was, to me at least, just a whim of a woman that had already given up. She was travelling with them but was always at a distance putting up barriers between them.
Seeing her finally breaking that barrier and crying, saying she wants to live from the bottom of her heart is always heartbreaking.
Yeah, I think making Robin older than the rest was really important. She was probably thinking about how young and full of dreams they were when she gave herself up. And I guess she was greateful that her death could buy the lifes of people she cared about and thus not be so utterly meaningless

It's such a well executed twist, the way you anticipate that something is up with Robin when she joined, we let our guard down after a while and oda came back full throttle to that anticipation we forgot about, we just knew something was up with Robin because it felt like she didn't earn her spot, then this twist.. how we were pretty much punished for doubting her. It's so fuggin good I was in tears too for the 6th or 7th time
@@AnimeIntrospective I can't count the amount of times I've seen these scenes, and just rewatched the show in general, but I always cry in these moments xD. I vividly remember the amount of times where I'd use One Piece compilations to distract myself from anything stressful or bad xD. Naruto and One Piece are probably the most influential Anime I ever watched in my life.

18:13 His name is Kuzan, his Code/Nickname is Aokiji, which means Blue Pheasant, Certain Vice Admirals and above are given these names with a Color and a Animal, if they are not given one of these nicknames they typically have a title instead while using their real name
I thought only admirals got codenames which is why he was called Kuzan in this and not Aokiji

They were recommended to become admirals after Sakazuki became fleet admiral and Kuzan left, but Issho and Aramaki were picked instead, so they might have gotten the names for that reason, its not fully clear
Specifically, the color/animal ones are typical for admiral candidates at the least.

@@Wildcard-Jack-47 if you're cool or did a major accomplishment you get a code name. it has nothing to do with rank. all the admirals are cool and have accomplishments. other people can still get code names. like in the real world. no one says you cant have a code name because you're not a manager haha
It wasn't included in the reaction, but the way the light sudden blasts away the darkness around Robin after Sogeking shoots the flag was one of the most memorable little touches in that last scene for me...

For me, those moments definitely rank high. But there is one thing (that I cannot mention because spoilers) that sell me even harder on this arc. All I can say is very vaguely that it involves both gratitude & regret. If you know, you'll know.

Yeah, this one broke me too. Every time. Robin's voice actress knocks it out of the park with that delivery, hits like a truck.
This moment with Robin is one of the crowning achievements within One Piece and one of the main reasons many fans unironically (well, slightly ironically) call Oda "Goda". He is a true master of set-up and pay-off and not just within flashbacks, either ! Robin's story wouldn't hit nearly as hard if we didn't have the build up at the end of the Alabasta arc and throughout the Water 7 arc.

Each Admiral gets a nickname that is a color followed by an animal. This was before Kuzan became an Admiral, so he wasn't Aokiji (青雉, literally meaning "Blue Pheasant") yet.
Stunned by Flashback of Luffy, Zoro, and Usopp; choked up of Sanji's flashback and leaving Zeff, tears fell for Nami and Franky, Chopper and Robin's backstories BROKE me... will leave it there for now.

In my opinion Robin is the one who had it the roughest from all of the Straw Hats. That's why I love her so much, she deserves a lot of love.
This Arc truly shows the atrocities the one piece world government has committed in order to silence knowledge
Kuzan/Aokiji a real one for letting Robin go, he wanted to grant Saul's wish of letting Robin live, he's one of the best Marine characters out there, he has a moral code unlike that dude that destroyed that ship with hundreds of innocent people and children
Aokiji is more good than many marines but he is not even close to marines such as Coby, Smoker, T-bone and Fujitora
He's always been more level headed than the average marine, but he has still done some dirty work.
I don’t think we get “I want to live” without them burning the flag letting her know that the government is gonna have to kill them before they can turn her in. She ran from every crew and didn’t trust anyone until this crew proved their loyalty by declaring war for her…without even knowing her story btw

Yup, this is another big moment in the entire series. Much like Nami asking for help, Robin saying she wants to live is still one of the most iconic scenes, and one many still consider their favorite

for the ice admiral and the other admirals too they all have nicknames while being admirals, so kuzan is his real name and aokiji meaning blue pheasant is his admiral nickname, this backstory takes place before he was an admiral, therefore he is reffered to by his real name
It is amazing how Oda has taken famous actors and made the admirals and then mixed in the charactertraits of the animals from the famous story Momotaro.

yeah, Robin's had it ROUGH, imagine growing up all alone and when you finally find friends that you want to protect, you have to betray them to keep them alive, it's no wonder that she wants to die.
but Luffy's like "no bitch, you gonna live! if the world is your enemy, then it's our enemy too! we're in this together, come hell or high water!"
Robin in DUB i feel delivers the I Want To Live scene better, you can watch that in your own time of course, wouldnt expect you to make a reaction squarely for a couple minutes. XD
but yeah, now we know that the World Government is evil to the core, with the Marines varying from good (Smoker) to neutral (Aokiji) to scum (Sakazaki, whom we'll learn about later.) Luffy knows all he needs to know to decide to declare war on the World Government.
I really feel like a lot of English speaking UA-camrs, miss out on a lot of dialogue by exclusively watching in sub. They also miss out on pronunciations of certain names too.

I remember watching this through tears years ago (Still tear up now) and seems I missed one interesting part during my first watch. Sakazuki. The bastard decided to shoot civilians all on his own. Truly a man of Justice.
This is where Robin truly becomes a Straw Hat.
These specific episodes and this specific arc is why I deem One Piece as my favorite anime of all time.
