I love all these ideas! Adding holidays and celebrations to the lore of a world is such a great way to bring it to life. In the original fiction, I am working on, the dragon race lives for thousands of years, so they definitely don't celebrate birthdays. When one of my dragon characters learns that humans do, his response is, "That's terribly depressing. You already live so few years, why would you tick them off as you go?" Also, I think I know a halfling who needs to have some parties thrown for her....:D
I could imagine an elf's century celebration having a moment/hour of silent contemplation, for all the previous guests (mostly human ones but ocasionally dwarves and other longer lived races) who died of old age and could not come to the current one.
I like the idea that certain D&D races/cultures that have a defined concept of "coming of age" to celebrate birthday's regularly when they considered a child, but not much after that. e.g., young elves are sometimes said to consider themselves to be children and go by child names, until they decide that they want to be/act like an adult. Edit: Also, I appreciated that outtake at the end XD
I remember something about birthdays in AD&D 2nd addition. They had source books for each race and in them they talked about birthdays and rites of passage.
Sounds like a great hook to write up party/celebration encounters or adventures. Adventures tasked with tracking down and taking 3 or more boars in preparation for the feast.
Thank you! And you should! My favorite thing is make my own traditions! Birthday adventures are my favorite! (I am also the type who celebrates my entire birthday month, so, true Halfling here 😂)
True…but they still have to be born. So would they celebrate birthday days? Or even remember how old they are? Or have any concept of physical age? …so many questions
if you were a player in a campaign what would you do if it was your characters birthday? or what event in the campaign would you arrange with the DM for your birth?
Oh my gosh! SO. In the campaign I am currently playing in, my sassy Halfling wizard is about to have a birthday, but she is somewhere where there are NO shrines to Yolanda, so, that will be fun. And once a player in my group was a Druid and had his birthday and his PC’s birthday be the same day. So I made a three layer strawberry cake decorated with edible flowers and the whole session was a surprise birthday party for both the player and PC!!! It was amazing. Both the birthday and the cake 😁
As a fellow DM, how do you deal with large combats? as an example, what if you wanted to have a swarm of zombie merfolk surround party and wave after wave attack them.
Ooo! Fun question! I don’t do that very often. But grouping enemies would be important so the players don’t have to wait 2 years for the DM to roll to hit and roll up damage. I would do groups of 5 or so go on the same initiative, same “to hit” and roll all the damage together. For waves I usually do rounds, eg. after 2 rounds 2d6 more show up. However, if they are just low level monsters that don’t really pose a threat and are just there for the players to feel awesome, I don’t do “real” combat. But I will save that for a video 😊
@@HalflingHobbies I love the 2d6 idea for random numbers. I have always done groups but have been kind of boring and had the same numbers swarming in. Thanks for the response. Keep up the good work and I will for sure watch that video.

LOVE that!
Awe... Thank you 💖
You’re welcome! I hope you have a wonderful day!!

I agree! I think that would make a big difference in how you role play a character.

I will have to pick that up! Thank you!
@@HalflingHobbies I find the term “humanoid” offensive! If anything, you should all be called elvenoids, as we were first! 😡
@@oldsoldier4209 🤣
Happy Birthday! Thank you so much Hannah!
Of course! Happy to 😊

Heck yes! Always fun!
I want to implement this. Happy Birthday, fellow PCs and NPCs.
Almost makes me wish I celebrate mine. Maybe I could start my own ritual. Great vid!

In mythology Elves are immortal like in JRR TOLKIEN'S MIDDLE EARTH.

May try to find some mid 90's Dragon magazine issues. They did issues centered on a particular race that included cultural aspects and festivals.
Awesome! I really wish there was a 5e edition..
