- In this video, I show and tell the story about an incredible Beatles butcher cover gift that I recently received. I also discuss some great record pick ups inspired by vinyl livestreams I have been watching. That Beatles proof sheet made from the color separations is really, really cool! That's definitely a keeper. I'm very familiar with color separations because I'm a graphic designer and have worked with printers extensively for many years. Several years ago I was at the annual Festival Of Rock Posters Show in San Francisco and I bought a proof sheet of Journey's Escape album cover. It's basically an uncut sheet from the actual album cover print run, complete with trim marks and color registration bars. The artist who painted that album cover (Stanley Mouse) was actually at that same show that day so I was able to have him sign my proof sheet of the Journey album cover he created!

Marty Balin did have a beautiful voice, I really enjoy the song "Miracles" he also wasn't afraid to jump in the pit, he showed true character when he jumped off stage and tried to stop a group of hells angles from beating up concert goers at the infamous Altamont fiasco. Hi Melinda! Yep, that Mofi Surrealistic Pillow is something else. I have been telling everyone I run across to pick that one up. Abbey Road UK -2/-1 is amazing. It just has a lush yet clear nearly 3D quality. Glad you got one!

Oh wow, I have one of those prints of the butcher also! Thats crazy. I cant recall what I paid for it though. I need to get it out, I think its still in the shipping tube. Very cool item.
Waaaay back in the late 80s or early 90s I use to shop at this cool little shop called Blue Gravy Records (cool name for a shop right?) And on a whim I bought a 3rd state peeled butcher cover. Now I had no idea of the history, rarity etc, I just though it was so cool looking. They guy sold it to me for $75.00. Which was cheap come to find out. Also it is the stereo version, which is rarer than the mono butcher. And the killer part is it is perfectly peeled save for the tiniest tear up in one corner thats basically unoticable.
Back in the early 00's there was a replica butcher cover that a company from japan put out. It is very well done. I compared it to my real butcher cover and the color is spot on. The only thing that is different is the texture. The real butchers have a sort of weaved rough feel to them. Might be able to still buy one, not sure.

Hi Melinda, Speaking of Marty Balin, I have a record of his short lived band, Bodacious DF. Some of the members came from Quicksilver Messenger Service and Country Joe and the Fish. I think it came out in 1973. The band broke up shortly after the release, and Balin returned to Starship. I've seen it recently for 15 bucks. I bought it for the song "Driving Me Crazy". Another nice video, I love your enthusiasm in describing your records and related stories including the one of the guy who wanted cash only but you ended up with a happier ending somewhere else. Other places to stay away are the ones who charge an extra 3-4% if paying with credit cards.

I attended RSD Black Friday in November 2022 at The 'In' Groove. There was no line when I went and I was able to obtain the album I wanted (the bonus was that Mike himself "rang my purchase up" at the check out😊).

I received Surrealistic Pillow #5376 yesterday and I was blown away by what a great album this is, both the music itself and the quality of the sound and pressing. Mofi did a great job on that one!

I wan't aware this album was currently for sale. among my collection of albums from that era, hat one is a glaring omission, because I could never find a copy worth bringing home .by the time I got over the incessant airplay of "white rabbit," and realized it had some of my favored tunes. I guess it was a popular party record.
As always, another superb video presentation Melinda! Informative, educational, fun, exciting, and your personality is simply the icing on the cake! You continue to keep the bar set high! I never would have guessed you’d like any album from Jefferson Airplane. That came a a surprise to me. As for Marty Balin, my favorite with him on lead vocal is the song “Miracles” on the Red Octopus album. I enjoyed your historical explanation of the Beatles butcher album. I am familiar with it, but it was refreshing to hear you explain it all. Another album from back in the day that was a bit controversial was the Mamas & Papas “If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears”. All of them in the bathtub was frowned upon by many, and the record label covered up the toilet that was next to the tub with a sign. Something the band did not approve at the time. Today’s re-release is now printed as the band originally wanted. Thanks again Melinda! You’re the best! 👏💯👍😁

Great finds to add to your collection especially the UK version of the Beatles album. It has been often said the UK pressing are the best not only for the Beatles but for other artists and bands. This video was the very first time I'd ever heard of "Quiex-II". Is this a foreign version of MOFI and AP's "quiet" vinyl formulations? But since when is a debit transaction any less a "cash in pocket" transaction than cash? I was always under the impression that the cash goes right straight from your bank account to theirs. So......huh? I thought only credit transactions charged a fee to the seller....guess I learned something new this day. That album cover slick of the Butcher cover appears somewhat faded.......age? You really came up with a great video this week; thanks so much!
The faded look is just the way the album slick was textured. It looks wonderful in person. ♥️ I was surprised that he rejected the sale too. I honestly haven't had time to research that Quiex vinyl yet. I'm guessing it was made here in the US but I'm not sure. Thank you and take care.

Hey Melinda, nice video. So cool to have that proof of the Butcher cover. It will look great framed. 😊 Your 2nd state should increase in value as apparently there are fewer copies of unpeeled Butchers these days. I have a 3rd state mono myself. It took me a while to finally bite the bullet on buying one. 😮 All of my first Beatles first pressings are Australian stereo & mono though I did snag a nice UK first press Pepper mono a couple of years back. I have a set of later UK pressings and have been content with those. I think if I had a grail item it might be German pressings of "Please Please Me" & "Magical Mystery Tour" as they're apparently quite superior sound wise. Love your work as always. Cheers ❤😊

Print of Abbey Road, oh yeah it’s like you’re sitting in the studio with them just jamming out ha, also I just seen that 1st stage Butcher cover at a record show, was $1,200 too much for me, but was still very cool to see it, great video, this was fun!!😎🤘

The British 60s mono records and the singles/ep's right up to the white album are the way the Beatles intended you to hear them. The quality of those old records created by white coated boffins who were at the cutting edge of their science is just incredible.
I am blown away at the depth of the soundstage of Please Please Me which unlike stereo has its own three dimensional sound that starts at the front and pushes the sound forward till its like six feet in front of you. I had to keep checking the label to make sure it was a mono recording.
I would highly recommend parlogram auctions on youtube for the ultimate Beatles vinyl guide and Vinyl Rewind for great vinyl comparisons. Also, I can't recommend enough owning an original U.K. Peppers or Magical Mystery Tour ep for their sound reproduction which both sound completely different to the stereo mixes.
I have a UK first pressing of Sgt Pepper so I am definitely sold on the sound quality. ♥️ I do watch Parlogram Auctions from time to time. Andrew does a fantastic job. Thank you and take care.
I was watching the live stream when you cracked on the 1984. I also received my back order of Cookin' and Relaxin', I only have four more to complete that Prestige series. I was too slow on the Surrealistic Pillow and hope I get another crack at it, I did get the Jeff Beck Truth though! Cool story on the Butcher cover. Tell Phillip to hurry up and come back on, I always enjoy the two of you.

Always great content, Melinda! Quix II pressings usually have excellent sound. They are not necessarily different or better mastering, but a higher quality and quieter vinyl used than regular pressings. I wonder why most, if not all were promo freebies to the media and not available for sale to the public. Nice Beatles butcher slick repro! Hmmm... How many times did you use "controversial" on this episode?
Last time I was in New York I found a Quiex II pressing of ‘The John Lennon Collection’ (you know, the ‘80s compilation with the beige cover) - it was a steal for about 15 bucks at a record shop in Greenwich Village. Turned out to be a great find, it sounds brilliant (and a pretty rare record, I understand)
Awesome buy! I have an opened Quiex II in near mint condition and one still sealed. I got both for about $20. I used to live in NYC and went to all the record stores in Greenwich Village at least 3x a week.

It's my personal Van Halen record - Gotta check out Donald Fagen always loved Steely Dan - My mom gave me SURREALISTIC PILLOW by Jefferson Airplane for my 13th Birthday in Mono - still have it! I always thought the US 1st pressing of ABBEY ROAD by The Beatles to be incredible - Paul's Bass was cut perfectly - still sounds good today - Great video Melinda you get an A+

Alot of info indeed...super cool info on the slick and learning how they were cut depending on mono or stereo versions. But in you showing them next to each other basicly..The griped about butcher cover...the guys were having a blast...no faking those smiles whatsoever. Then you look at the trunk replacement...they look like they all got stuck in detention after school...not happy and faking the expressions pretty much. i wonder how well it would have sold if originally left alone and then did the trunk for reissues...hmmm...guess we'll never know.
And as for the cluck who wouldn't sell you whose spent x amount in their store prior but would run plastic for a $7 record...great call on putting it back and walking out...even better still...not having returned since. If you help your customers out...ESPECIALLY regulars...life will be great. BUT, if you do what this cluck did to you Melinda...your expression pretty much nailed it...I wonder if the cluck knows you have a heavily watched YT channel...LOL...you shoulda thrown that in his face...subtly though...as you walked out the door. Good going Melinda:-)
As for the Quiexx II pressings ...they are amazing...i've had one of Elton Johns albums..great sounding record.
I was just so shocked that he wouldn't sell that record. I would never want to use this channel to hurt a business for something like that. Maybe he was just having a bad day.
The looks on the Beatles faces are a sharp contrast. The backlash to that album would have been severe in my opinion. We will never truly know. Thank you and take care.
Yes the record companies would raise or lower the slick for mono or stereo. (Example) If you look at any Herb Alpert & TJB albums from the 1960’s, the same procedure was applied also. The stereo release was lowered, the mono was raised. It was cost effective to do it that way. Columbia did the same in the 1960’s too. Great video as always Melinda. Thank you.

Love Jefferson Airplane! Marty was a great singer and songwriter. What record store doesn't want to sell records? That was a rotten thing to do. Glad you found a copy later and even cheaper too. He ended up doing you a favor! The Beatles slick is really cool. I have a lot of Ventures, Herb Alpert and Chet Atkins records from the 60's mono and stereo versions and now that you have pointed out how they use the same slick for mono and stereo I can see how that is the case with these records cutting the top or the bottoms off when needed. Hello 👱♀Melinda; Starting in the early 80's Butcher cover slicks were available in NYC. Stores that carried " bootleg" recordings had both the Mono & Stereo repros. Along with at the Fest. What the buyers did with the slicks who knows? ( frame or create a counterfeit cover ) As we owned a legit Butcher, Mono cover we didn't purchase the slick. Any cover slick can be reproed. Now that print of the Beatles would be a nice collectible to own. I can kind of understand the guy saying you have to have a minimum purchase amount to use a card, but not to someone who has bought records there before. One of my main record stores actually only takes cash. So I always have to get cash ahead of time. He rarely charges me tax. Normally that’s one of the few things I have to use cash for anymore. I picked up a reissue of the Butcher Block album at Toad Hall a couple years ago for $30. It looks to me like an exact copy of the original. The only differance I could see was the record was colored vynil. I kinda wish I would have gotten 2 or 3 as they went fast..

Melinda, you need to seek out a 1973 France Contract -2 -1 vinyl pressing of ‘Abbey Road’. This was cut when Abbey Road Studios was closed for renovations. Have listened to over 25 different pressings of ‘Abbey Road’ & this pressing wins the shootout. The vocal harmonies & Paul’s bass playing are on a whole different level. Frank

Thanks Melinda great video! You showed me a VH 1984 pressing that I never knew existed! I only have the 2015 remaster, which sounds Pretty good but suffers from inner groove distortion. This is my favorite VH album. The second I saw this, I went on Discogs in search for it. I found a near mint copy and bought it immediately 🤘😎🤘. I hope it lives up to the hype, cuz it was not cheap! Lol. But I’m always willing to spend some good $ for the best pressings of my favorite albums. Have a great day!

@@MelindaMurphy I got it today and I’m spinning it now. It definitely sounds fantastic but I have to admit that it doesn’t quite blow me away. I always thought the distortion on Drop Dead Legs was inner groove distortion, but I guess it’s in the recording! Cuz it’s here on this pressing too. This is almost identical in sound quality to the 2015 Chris Bellman cut I already have. Maybe just a slight bit better. Kickin myself just a Tiny bit for spending 110 on this. But hey! At least I have a Rare mint condition copy of 1984 that was actually released in 1984! Lol. I love it. Now that I got this, I definitely won’t be dropping my $ on the supposedly upcoming Mofi digital one step. No way. This is my last copy of 1984 and I’m perfectly happy with it 👍

Totally agree with you about Marty Balin - he's why I became a huge Jefferson Starship fan in the late 1970s, and I love his solo stuff too...although "Hearts" is a great song, the video is a stinker IMHO, Balin is a great vocalist but doesn't come across as a convincing actor...heh heh... I remember working retail back in mid 70s and when Bankamericard became VISA they had a policy that the minimum amount you could charge wax $5.00...they found out that that was illegal and had to discontinue that policy.

One thing you should note is that the butcher block was a protest on the way the American releases were chopped up. Starting with Sergeant Peppers, the tracks on the American and UK releases were the same.

After having bought ALL the Beatles US LPs. I discovered the UK versions in the 1970s when record stores had "JEM Imports". I soon replaced all my Beatles LPs with UK versions and the Hor Zu German pressing of MMT. Alas I sold the whole set to a friend in around the year 2000 when I got rid of my entire vinyl collection. The UK pressings are worth having.

It seems so many people one hears about live as though actions have no life effects, and that self centered living is the only way, with the golden rule being only for chumps, instead of a productive social device.
I have taken to writing comments on enjoyable sites because I have learned it affects the financial algorithms. on a personal note, I have that same Van Halen album with the same quiex 2 hype sticker , only not a promotional copy., Some say a promotional can be better because some were identified as primarily going for radio play, some dispute this as a possibility,. other promotional records were just taken off the line and sent out, with the promotional identifier the only difference from other pressings. glad I saw this video, ;previously I had assumed the quietx II was some sort of signal processing that needed an electronic decoder that I didn't have to play properly, like a dolby recording, but , curiously, it still sounded good.
Some people seek out promotional copies because it is believed that they were printed first with the fresh stamper. That's probably the only difference between this one and yours. Both sound great. Thank you and take care.

The Butcher Cover Beatles album (original pressing) can fetch anywhere from $2000 to $10,000, depending on the condition. Perhaps even more than that.

I have that Quiex VH too. Unreal. Have a few other Quiex, Heartbeat City most notably. Can't recommend that enough. I honestly wish there was a Quiex pressing for every album. Imo they're the best sounding albums I have. Mofi, Japanese, UK, Acoustic Sounds or whatever just don't hit like those Quiex.
