- Lionel Sanders is only one of our favorite triathletes on the planet. Watching him limp his way to a 2:51 marathon in Kona in 2017 while taking second place to Patrick Lange said a ton about his toughness. From 2013-2018 he did 66 races and had 58 top threes. In 2019 Lionel dealt with injuries and raced way less than usual, which could be a good thing for him on race day.

This interview was tremendously enjoyable and exactly why I love the sport of triathlon. These athletes support each other. Even ITU triathletes train together than race hard the next weekend and are always there win or lose supporting those around them. It's about the process not the result...to get to the race and then race your the best you can. Love it!

SK and JF are super nice guys and always very helpful with advice to LS. One things Germans do is nail the science of training. Very smart sports people. This coming from a Canadian who trained there for a month back in the day.

Having watched Lionel's updates for a year prior to the race, I'm intrigued that his limping run seems to need a great deal of work. I wonder if Kona 2020 will see a more successful transition into a result that truly reflects his pedigree. The same could also be said of my fellow Yorkshireman Alistair.
