Good luck in the race! Two quick things. 1 - The HED Jet plus 60 gives up next to nothing in aero to the 90 and is way more stable in gusty crosswinds. Getting out of position, pausing pedalling for a moment or even correcting/head movement will cost way more time than the 60 gives up at higher yaw. 2 - Take it easy and taper smart! Don’t get sucked into bullshit efforts. Your body already knows how to ride for 4-5 hours. Given your tendency to over train take your planned workouts and cut them back even further. Don’t blow your race. You’ll feel antsy and want to do more but don’t. You want to go into the race feeling like a dog straining against a leash wanting it to snap. A 3 week taper is not a bad thing especially with the tune up race in between. Don’t blow it man...go really easy this week
Oh my. Lionel, instead of constantly “reminding your body” you should probably “remind yourself” that tapering with confidence is a good thing you have missed out on in the past couple of years. To quote Sebi Kienle in his interview with Talbot: “When others are skinnier than me they are probably too skinny, when others train harder than me they probably train too hard.” Wise words. The work is done. Your body will have several hours to remember what it’s like to do an Ironman. No need for another reminder. You ought to be prepared. Don’t overtrain again, please.
Agreed. Did he go 101% or did he go 99%??? Because the prior is a recipe for disaster. But daaaamn he is looking lean, hope that this year is his year...but...
Sounds like he planned to do an easy "6 hour ride" initially, all the way back down again, but it only ended up being 4 hours because of the "scary" winds, so by chance. The "I flexed a little too hard" worries me too. Not needed. No gains to be had. Hopefully the wind saved some of his energy for race day.
Don't do such hard trainings in the week before the competition. You won't improve anymore. But you can certainly get worse. You have to start hard on Saturday, man! Taper, taper! I keep my fingers crossed for you Lionel! Go smash it!
Ok Lionel, NO MORE!!!! You have a good build up. Don't mess it up again with overtraining in the week before like you did last year. Trust your fitness!!!
Lionel’s transparency is what makes him human, his raw talent is what makes him a fierce competitor, but it’s his truth that separates him from the others. His truth is you don’t stop until you win...and that’s a journey. In this journey, there’s learning, improvement, hard lessons, then some serious production. It’s time to win Kona, Lionel. The entire triathlon world is watching you......
I volunteered at a run aid station at IMAZ in '17 the second year Lionel won. I received priority registration for my first IM the following year. I was amazed watching LS and enjoyed supporting, following and cheering ever since. Good luck in Kona! I hope our paths cross again at some race again, you'll know its me because I'll have a Sharpie and I'll want you to sign my Canyon, race kit and helmet. Maximum respect, Lionel.
@@Mike.A. Hi Mike, Yes, I have the Speedmax CF 8.0 LTD. I live near Oceanside, CA. Canyon has a showroom there where I was able to demo the bike. I came off a 10 year old Felt that was too big (58) for me which I used for my first 2 IM's. I just completed my 3rd IM in Italy with the Canyon, still getting used to it, bike fitter has me in a lower, more aggressive position.
Dude you look refreshed, relaxed and ready.. learning to rest and relax the body is a big part of training.. looks like that humble pie 🥧 did you well!! Definitely cheering for you.. much luck and have fun!!!
No doubt that Lionel can put serious power on the bike........but I'm still surprised by his fitting on the bike, he s all over, his knees are going in and out!!! He s a stud and hard head but he can win the race at any given time!
Thx for the video Lionel !! Don't over train this week ! Trust yourself man and do the best you can, we will support you 100% no matter what 👍👍 Good luck !!
Lionel, as the others said, pleeease taper properly. Winning a 70.3 is not a taper week and the race is Saturday. Move, get out there this week, but stop "reminding your body". There will not be any hypercompensation from multi-hour hard efforts until the cannon fires on October 12th... Race your race
Yeah I agree, this 'reminding the body' is an 'excuse' for his unwarranted lack of confidence and still wanting to push his training past days that he should be.
Lmao pretty sure he knows his body better than you do. What works for you mentally or physically doesn't work for him. He has lots of great people around him giving him sound advice. He's not reading your UA-cam comment and taking anything from it
I think Lionel is the person here that trains 20h+ per week AT LEAST so please shut the fuck up he knows what he is doing don’t pretend like you are smart
It feels like we are training right next to him and feel the fatigue after a massive training day. He does not. This guy is at one with himself finally and we have no idea what pathways his body has created. Crash or burn come race day we will see this guy leave it all out there. ✌️🇨🇦🇨🇦
“I am excited because of the unknown”. True that, brother. I am excited because of the unknown. I am the most excited about seeing this race than I have been in many years. For that, thanks, Lionel.
Hey Lionel, could see you Surfin' The Wind' out there, good to experience that Pre-Race, and it clearly told you what Race Wheels to use on Race Day. Get Sharp & the Chill Bro Everyone back Home is ridin' with you, Go Fight it out, you're Lionel Sanders, nothing else you'd rather do than B.A.T.T.L.E....!
Good luck Lionel, you look really fit. Over taper, don't empty any gas out of tank this week. Not that I know enough to offer advice, just worrying for you man!
Good luck for this last week - and don‘t forget: Don‘t let even the unconscious doubts in your (too hard) training in these days! On raceway is everything allowed! Let‘s go!
Go Lionel! You're my most favorite pro athlete in the universe! I have a feeling we're going to see an amazing performance from you this weekend. BTW, I think some of the people commenting here need to stop telling Lionel how he needs to train/taper. Lionel is an experienced pro athlete. Lets let Lionel be Lionel and get out of his way.
From the Front view it Looks like you ˋve got. to get more aero on the bike. Reduce the Drag with your legs. Think you Could Save some watts by closing in your leg’s to the Frame of your bike.
Honestly I think it's all about the way your body works. I keep my legs very close to the frame not because of the aerodynamics, but simply because that is how my body is built. If I force my legs to work away from the frame my knees start to hurt.
Sure, you should feel comfortable. I just noticed his Position on the bike and thought he can get more aero there. Nowadays its all about aero and lightweight, as we saw in nice the Pros cut off Things of their bikes to Save Energy and Most of them used TT bikes instead of normal road bikes... i just saw a possibility of improvement for Lionel in regards to his positioning on the bike, but yeah your probably right, he will know Whats best for him. Thanks for your thoughts and your answer have a nice day!
I'm a huge fan of your work ethic and find you inspirational, most of the time. But, I have to say that I do worry when I hear "I probably flexed too hard" 1 week out from your A race. Who cares if it's Brownlee, Frodeno or Froome riding past? Do you NOT trust in your own process, as a self coached athlete?? The time to race is next weekend. Leave the ego/chip elsewhere. They don't give kudos and podiums for showing how fast/tough you are before race day. If they did, you'd win!! 9:52 What do you mean a 3 week taper?!?! You raced and were pushed for a fair bit of that Augusta 70.3. So the 6 day taper counts for very little, after that race, I would think. So your body definitely still needs another taper going into Kona if you've been training between Augusta and now, or risk being fatigued, like last year. 4:16 Alistair had the right idea. On an easy training day, to get the distance done, draft. Save a tonne of energy and still get the time in the saddle done. But hey, what do I know, I'm a shitty AG triathlete at best. But as you said "It's done". All the best on race day!!!
@TheDomLouis. Relax a bit dude. Sometimes doing something unconventional before a race changes the mind and gives you more strength. As another AG my last race I did a taper where I didn’t put in enough work and was totally flat and in pain the whole race. My time was still okay but most people were beating their PB because the conditions were great. I was pissed of anf this race trainer in full up to the day before the race. Came second and beat my PB by 3 minutes. Granted these were Sprints and not an IM but the training is in and he really just needs to nail the nutrition and have the right mind set.
@@rogerc23 Did you follow Lionel's prep last year just before Kona? Do you not see some similarities? I really hope I'm wrong and as you say something unconventional works as I really want Lionel to do well. We'll find out next weekend!
@Krzysztof Kajetanowicz. Oh why don’t you list out for me all the times Lionel blew up at Kona or any other IM for that matter. And then list for me the crazy thing he did before the race that caused the blow up since you know he has a massive history of doing this, especially versus us the IMs he’s won
I agree 100%. He is more tapered than ever. Surely he is not overtrained, so if you include his mentals into the equasion he will absolutely obliterate any challengers.
