  • This #R107, #560SL Video: Installing Rocker Arms
In this short video, I install the rocker arms. This video is relevant to all #M116, #M117 Mercedes-Benz 8 cylinder gas, 3.8L, 4.2L, 5.0L, 5.6L engines.
Please subscribe if you would like to support this project. You may need my help one day and I will be here for you.
I am documenting every part of this vehicle as I put it back together. The idea is to end up with the best documented 560SL rebuilds on the Internet.
Links to the manual and links to all tools used in this video are below.
I want everyone who visits my channel to know about a friend of mine named Tasos. His videos inspire me to be more like him. He is so much better than I am. You can find his UA-cam channel at:
    / @tasosmoschatos
My videos are not sponsored by anyone. The products and tools I use are products and tools I have purchased with my own money. I include links below to any special tools or products used in this video.
I used Driven Engine Assembly Grease to lubricate all rocker arms prior to installation:

I bought the valve spring compression tools many years ago. Where I bought mine is no longer in business. That said, I did find this site that claims they have it available.
    shop.ktcautoto...
You can purchase the Mercedes-Benz Go-No-Go gauge from eBay and other vendors. That said, at the time of this video I found this tool on Pelicanparts.com here:
    www.pelicanpar...
That's all the special tools and products I used in this video.
Here is a link to the on-line manual that I am somewhat following:
    www.startekinf...
I will be doing a UA-cam live when I start this car for the very first time since 2008. Make sure you get notified when I publish a new video so you don't miss this special one-time event.

For the rockers you can also use an allen wrench into the oiling hole to take them on and off.

Great idea! I didn’t think of that.

Nice work Tony - you’re making it look easy!
I’ve got a lot of valve / rocker noise from my 560 and will be watching this video many times to see if I’m up to the task of replacing some of this stuff.
Good luck on the intake manifold! Watch your back, that thing is heavy.

Thank you Trevor. Installing the rocker arms is easy when you have the right tools, but to be honest it still took all day to do 32 valves!

The build continues. I’ve been extremely busy lately. My daughter is graduating from college this coming week. She has three days of events and I am videoing all three. I also ran into a small problem while I was installing the intake manifold. There were missing washers and incorrect bolts so I had to order new. I’m still waiting on the parts. I hope to get the intake fully installed next week.

Hope everything goes on graduation. We’ll all be here waiting the next one👍

Hi Tony. I'm rebuilding the motor in my 1972 350SL. I'm no stranger to fully rebuilding high line autos. Past experience with MB was with a 1962 300d, 1972 600 Grand and a 1991 300SE. I can tell you that I'm so disappointed in the engineering of this car, especially the motor. It is a Rube Goldberg design from the start. The valve train and associated guides along the path is a joke along with the rockers. I can't wait to get rid of this project and continue with my passion rebuilding and collecting Rolls-Royces from 1966 to 1981. They do not have any timing chains or belts to deal with. Nite and day from MB. Continue the great work! Rob from NY

I agree! I have always said this engine is an over engineered block of aluminum. For me I think I prefer the old air cooled Volkswagen engines. They are as simple as a lawnmower. There is no timing chain or guides in VW either. Loosen 4 bolts and the engine is out. 4 more bolts and the intake is removed and 4 more bolts and you have a cylinder removed. All done with a floor jack. What could be easier than that?

@@MariaQueenGames yes I believe febi is ok. I know of plenty using febi without problems. Make surre you check the compensating elements for proper clearance. I have a video for that. 560SL - Adjusting Valve Clearance / Compensating Elements / Go-No-Go Gauge
