- In today’s video, we’re doing a walk around and overview with this 2024 BMW X5 xDrive 50e! This X5 is finished in Skyscraper Grey Metallic over Cognac Sensafin. It is shown wearing 20” M Star-Spoke bi-color wheels, style 740M. The X5 50e features BMW’s B58 turbocharged inline 6, paired to a plug-in hybrid drive system with a 29.5kWh (gross) battery. This hybrid drivetrain sends power to all four wheels via xDrive. The 50e produces 483 combined horsepower and 516 combined lb-ft of torque. This is enough to propel the X5 xDrive50e to 60mph in a quoted time of just 4.6 seconds.

If this vehicle offers standard 2 wheel steering then I believe it would really sell well.

Love mine. Mid April build. May 3, 2023 delivery. Almost 9000 miles now. Great drivers car. Dealers are still learning about this car. For the price of just the Level 2 pigtail for the included BMW EVSE, I was able to get an entire EVSE (charging cable) that I’ve permanently mounted in my garage for just a little bit more than just the price of the pigtail.

Please advise, I just p/u my 50e, and cannot wait 34 hours using the 120v “easy adapter”
My home is able to accommodate full electric charging. I am not sure what to purchase in order to have L2 charging… Can I use the included charging cord and have the electrician install a nema 14/50 wall outlet? Or do I need to purchase the $600 BMW Wall charger and new charging cord? I am confused, can you advise plz. TIA!
@@blazinmark1 You'll want to have your electrician install a NEMA 14-50 outlet, and then purchase the Level 2 adapter from your local BMW dealer parts department. Use this adapter with the cable that came with the car and you'll be good to go.

Air suspension is standard on the X5 50e.
This engine needs to be installed in the 3 series lineup !
That would be something! We're hoping to see it in the new 5 series, but I wouldn't expect it in the 3 series.

Can you get the m sport on the x5 40i with blue calipers and air suspension but without the msport professional ?
Air suspension cannot be ordered with M Sport, so no. You can get the blue calipers without M Sport Professional though.
If you set it to "Electric" mode, when the battery is almost exhausted, does it automatically switch itself back to "Hybrid" mode?
Yes.
I haven't finished the video yet, but have to correct a few things regarding the charging -- as someone who has owned a 50e since mid-June.
1. On level 2 chasing, the car charges from "empty" (or whatever minimum buffer it lets you get to) in just over 3 hours, not 7. I used either the included BMW flexible fast charger connected to a 240V outlet using the Level 2 pigtail OR I use a 48 Amp Juicebox. In both cases, it's just over three hours and the charging rate is pretty consistently at about 7 kWh. This is a critical point that should be corrected as it may affect someone's view of whether they will be able to get nearly all-electric use out of this (as we have).
2. BMW should include the Level 2 pigtail rather than charging you $200+ for it. He is right, that it is NOT standard, however a number of dealers are including it as a goodwill gesture as it greatly enhances the ability to juice up and go if you are, for instance, doing multiple drives in a day that would exceed the electric-only range. My dealer included it. BMW of Morristown should too (for a car that's likely going to sell at >$80K. They were difficult to source for a while, but I believe they have been stocked more regularly by BMW in the U.S.
3. Not sure where the get the electric-only range as 39 miles. Not a big deal, but everywhere else I've seen 40 miles as the projected range. More importantly, we are generally getting closer to 45 in our actual usage -- including in the summertime here in the US where the AC is being run regularly. In the US, due to required warranty coverage for, I believe, 8 years, BMW includes a very large buffer of unusable capacity. Theoretically, were that buffer not employed, range would be quite a bit longer, as I believe is the case in some European locations.
The BMW USA website says 7 hours for level two, so that's what we go with. However, you're experience does align with others we've heard. Perhaps BMW quotes a slower, more conservative level 2, below the cars 7kW capability.
The level 2 adapters are much more accessible now than they used to be, thankfully!
As with every number I quote in these videos, that 39 is pulled directly from the BMWUSA website, where the EV range is quoted as 39 miles. Awesome to hear that you're outperforming the range estimate though!

Mine is showing 48 miles max electric range. Just purchased, only 80 miles on my odometer.
Can you run the ac on battery mode and closed doors - when you go shopping and the car is left out on the sun? I can do that with the 2014 with engine on and locked car.. but it’s a terrible option

Charging time in my 50e from o% to 100% is 3.5 hrs with a level 2 36amp house charger . Real life electric only range 44miles

I am on verge of buying a fully specced one. Test drove today. Seamless between power trains. Can you help. I put it in electric only but if I fully planted my foot the motor fired up. I thought it was meant to just stay in electric. I double checked it twice but motor still cut in even when I pressed electric. ? Was I missing something
Sounds like yes, you were missing something. If you put your foot down in full EV mode, the engine should not turn on. However, I'm not sure if this remains true when you also press the kickdown switch at the bottom of the pedal. I have not tried that in full EV mode and we don't have one to test it right now. That might've been what you missed!
1) Approximately, how much charge the battery must have in order to be able to pre-cool the vehicle for 5 mins with MAX A/C?.
2) Are the full 483hp only available when the battery is charged?. When the battery is depleted, is the vehicle slower?.
3) In order to get the 58mpg, does the battery has to be charged?.
4) Let’s say you leave home with a 100% charged battery for a long road trip and you drive in the most efficient mode always (hybrid I assume). At some point, will the battery go down to 0% and then you will have a much lower efficiency than the 58mpg?.

1. No exact figure to give here, but I'd guess it can be close to empty and still work. As long as the battery isn't depleted, I don't see why it couldn't use its remaining charge to pre-condition.
2. Yes on both accounts.
3. Yes, that is correct. When the battery is depleted and the gas engine is the only thing powering the car, MPG gets worse.
4. Eventually yes, and yes (see question 3 answer).
I wish the X6 had the 50e as an option. It's kind of dumb it doesn't since the shape is more conducive for the EV aspect of it.
I wish the 50e could have the B&W stereo system.

Does the battery charge from the gas engine while driving or you have to charge by plug in
It is not possible to use the gas engine to recharge the battery, other than using a hack to recapture a mile or two. But this is, I believe, different from the 45e. There is a battery hold button in the 50e, but that's exactly what it does. Holds the battery where you are discharge-wise. So if you exhaust the battery, you will really have to plug in.
It does charge through regeneration when braking.

No, the gas engine will not directly charge the battery.
Does this car have a spare wheel? I know some hybrid cars have no room for a spare wheel.
No this one does not have, same as some other hybrid cars

When are the hydrogen fuel cell cars coming out? My understanding is part of the reason BMW worked with Toyota on the Supra is so that they would share tech from their hydrogen car the Mirai. Great video btw, I just thought BMW was gonna release a hydrogen car soon.
No timeline on that stuff. There's a lot of limitations to hydrogen still... look at the Mirai's spec sheet. There's some exciting work going on right now with alternative fuels, but there isn't an exact timeline, or plan in place (as far as I'm aware) for BMW to mass-produce a hydrogen powered vehicle. There have been concept cars as of late, like the iX5 Hydrogen, but no production plans as far as I know.
