  • A nine-year-old girl born with one eye, who refused to even leave the house due to bullies, has had her life transformed thanks to a state of the art bionic eye replacement. After raising £15,000 to fly to the US, Myah and her mum Lauren returned home with not one, but three brand-new prosthetic eyes - including one with a heart-shaped pupil that glows in the dark! The two join us in the studio to talk about Myah’s new high-tech eyes.

I had microthelmia and congenital cataracts at birth. I am 57 now. At the time there was no one that could help me. At 9 years old we found one doctor that fixed my right eye. The left eye went blind because of previous failed operations. With my one eye I built a career fixing computers and designing websites. Young lady don't let anyone stop you. You can do anything you want too. Good luck I know you are a superstar in the making.

    Kids can be so cruel.
i'm blind, and it took until college before people started treating me like someone worth talking to, and it was a shock when they did. I'm not sure what's worse, being ignored or being bullied. Probably bullied. My heart goes out to Maya for all the nastiness she heard from other kids.
I'm so glad she has this bionic eye. I wish they'd gone a bit more into how it works, how it communicates with the brain. What they did here, saying they would buy her a new eye, was truly precious and generous. So kind and compassionate.
Praying for only good things for Maya and her sweet mom.

It's funny I had no idea my wife was blind even though we were best friends for 11 yrs before we got married. She never discussed it cause she didn't want people to treat her differently. There are levels to blindness ,it doesn't always mean your completely in darkness.

I'm blind with light perception. I can see shadows, if something is big enough and it crosses in front of me--by big enough I mean practically right in my face, and I'm not sure how to explain how big.
That's really cool about your wife. :)
See my other reply. If YT ate it for some reason I'll repost it.
Totally blind, and blind with light perception are similar enough, depending on someone's light perception. Some can see colors close-up, but could never read print. But there are others who are legally blind who can read print with magnifiers.
I don't use my thumbs to type on a smartphone keyboard. I dictate most of my texts. lol. OR I get out my Bluetooth keyboard. I can peck at letters on the touch screen, but it's a pain.

I lost my left eye when I was 8 years old in the early 1970s. And the bullying was horrendous. It mentally messed me up for a few years. I learned to make people laugh by taking it out and making jokes about it and that was the best decision I made.👍 I was a short skinny kid so bullying me was easy but when I got older I grew to 6ft tall and started going to the gym etc and the old bully boys got some payback😆
I enjoyed every encounter with each one of them.💪

This was me 50 years ago! I had micro-opthalmia in my left eye. That small eye was kept, with a prosthetic shell (artificial eye) covering it, until I was about 33. Then, it had to be removed, due to glaucoma. Now my new artificial eye is fuller, and it moves so much more, due to the titanium pin attached to the muscles and pearl of sea coral to allow blood vessels to hold everything in place. This is the most movement I've ever had in a prosthetic eye. Growing up, you have to have a new eye made every few years, which is expensive, and most insurances won't pay for them (only limbs, etc...). Now that I'm an adult, it will last me several years at a time. I wish I had been so adventurous to try cool ones like the pink glitter heart!!! You look beautiful!

The only thing they accept is there own and no one else different. I was bullied all my younger life and its not easy I am glad to hear she is doing better and glad to see she got the eye but she was and is beautiful inside and out no matter what and so is her mother.
