One of the most captivating orators I have ever seen. I never thought I'd like listening to a history lesson. Boy was I wrong. I learnt a lot about Indian history, but more importantly I discovered an amazing writer. Thank you sbs for the wonderful session!

Just completing his The Ivory Throne - brilliantly researched and lucidly written - this wud be a great way to impart history to students and people in general.

I am shocked to see the sub standard quality of the audience (MBA Class?). Not even one could ask a question eloquently, let alone frame a sentence properly. Manu Pillai is awesome. extremely knowledgeable and a great orator.

It is excellent presentation. Yes our culture was diverse, varied, dotted, layered etc. I think it is still too. Perhaps I am proud too that he being a Malayalee learned more about history of Kerala customs, at least more than I do. But in all, what he has missed to see might be and perhaps blinding others who listen this narration is the idea of a common underlying much substratum of culture of accepting and accommodating others. Be it for some reasons, say money or land or other goodies, which we do have even now. We must ask questions like why this kind of integration didn't happen in other civilizations such as Mesapotomian or Greek? We must know that our civilization is the only ancient one which is still prevailing. All the others simply failed and wiped out from the surface of the earth. Why is that? Be it matrilineal family culture, establishment of other cultures such as European and Arabian by our own people, be it occupation by Afrian people and establishment of dynasties of them, Mughal and even British... All occurred. They accepted and acceded to our culture in the long run rather than destroying our basic civilization. Those incursions did not affect a general underlying framework of culture, which is based on tolerance, inner peace and liberation, insight on our own senses, respecting elderly, taking care of parents, getting money is a means and not the end, upholding our knowledge on eternal being, customs and life styles to understand, learn more on that eternal nature of ourselves and asking and pondering more and more deeper questions of our life. More than 40 of the ancient civilization did not able to do that. Even celebrated civilization of Greece, where most of the modern world eulogizes them as the highest intellectuals and philosophers was simply wiped out from the surface of the world. Let history be learned, but it should learn to understand what prevailed and what is lost. Why certain entities prevailed and others were lost? I think as a common man, I am looking for answers to these kind of questions. I also think that answers to these questions might perhaps find us at a common meeting point.

Honestly Mr Manu Pillai's brilliance is blinding. Hope he is able to stay out of politics and able to generate objective material for future India.. But I am so touched by the youngsters asking the questions. Its very refreshing and raises my hope for a bright future. Sure lot of their english is broken but their thoughts are pure and clear. Let them be truly be open minded and not biased too any idealogy especially communism. Keep it up..

Working with Tharoor a nice gentlemen has been Anglicied beyond limit....rather Victorianized in his own words. He is making political points beyond what is needed and this must be reflecting in his book.
