- ‘Deftly and with great vividness, Manu S. Pillai takes us through 400 years of roiling history and returns the Deccan to the centre of our attention - where it belongs.’ SUNIL KHILNANI
‘Minutely researched and yet instantly accessible . . . Rebel Sultans will bring the fascinating history of the medieval Deccan to a whole new generation of readers.’ WILLIAM DALRYMPLE
‘In this lively study, Manu S. Pillai does a superb job of re-orienting the narrative of late medieval and early modern South Asia towards the Deccan.’ MUZAFFAR ALAM
‘In Rebel Sultans, the Deccan is presented in seven engaging chapters, each focused on a pivotal moment, character or symbol, that together trace the dynamic history of the region and convey its unique flavour.’ NAVINA NAJAT HAIDAR
In 1707 when Emperor Aurangzeb went to his grave, the Mughal empire began to crack into a hundred fractured pieces. It was the lure of the Deccan that drained this conqueror’s energies, putting him on a course of collision with his most threatening adversaries. After all, the Deccan was a land that inspired wonder. Its treasures were legendary, and its kings magnificent. It was a horizon of rousing adventure, attracting talent from beyond oceans. A traveller here could encounter bands of European snipers, available for military hire, or forbidding fortresses where African nobles scaled the heights of power. Diamonds and pearls lay heaped in the Deccan’s bazaars, while in its courts thrived Persians and Marathas, Portuguese and Georgians, presiding over a world of drama and betrayal. A thousand fortunes were made in the Deccan, drawing the formidable envy of generations of Mughal emperors.
In Rebel Sultans, Manu S. Pillai narrates the story of the Deccan from the close of the thirteenth century to the dawn of the eighteenth. Packed with riveting tales and compelling characters, this book takes us from the age of Alauddin Khilji to the ascent of Shivaji. We witness the dramatic rise and fall of the Vijayanagar empire, even as we negotiate intrigues at the courts of the Bahmani kings and the Rebel Sultans who overthrew them. From Chand Bibi, a valorous queen stabbed to death, and Ibrahim II of Bijapur, a Muslim prince who venerated Hindu gods, to Malik Ambar, the Ethiopian warlord, and Krishnadeva Raya on Vijayanagar’s Diamond Throne - they all appear in these pages as we journey through one of the most arresting sweeps of Indian history. Unravelling a forgotten chapter in our medieval past, Rebel Sultans reminds us of a different age and a different time in the Deccan - one that ended an empire and rewrote India’s destiny.
Good to see 2 Keralites discussing about Marathi, Telugu & Kannada dynasties..!!😊
Sympion is oudaded now ids all android
Oh boy.. we need intellectuals, historians, writers like Manu who writes his books with tremendous amount of research, hard work and rational thinking not like people who just copy paste some clip in FB and crave for some cheap comments.. books last for years and remains in heart forever unlike comments in FB...distorting history has become today's fashion to show some political stunts..where r we heading?
Superb! !
The future of this nation is in hands like yours.
What has future to do in this?
This pillai at such a young age coming with solid information makes me thinks that he is the future elite historian of India.
Thanks Juggernaut! For a formidable panel and a fantastic discussion on Deccan History. The more we learn the more the spirit of India makes sense and it makes me proud!
It's such fun reading some of the comments of illiterate, ignorant, biased and brainwashed people calling names of two of the best writers in the country, who help raise the prestige of this country with their immense talent instead of actually taking their time to read what they have so skillfully put down. But then again, if they had the courage or the will to actually read and think, they wouldn't be here being keyboard warriors.
Rightly said...keyboard warriors...
Unlike the previous work The Ivory Throne published by Harper Collins based on Trabancore History, this book was not publicised widely.. I feel this particular work actually needs more wider audience as it transcends a greater canvass and characters..
Thanks
The History what we have learned was distorted and biased without doing justice to fair presentation of facts, cause and actions. All this time it was meant to propagate the political, economic intellectual interest to any major cult. In due Course it mirrored the views of the colonial British, the Nehurvain socialist and utopian leftist and extreme rights and fringe groups.I believe this charismatic young guy have to guts to recreate the history as such it had happened without compromising on its chastity. Thank You Mr Manu , You are opening the new window to look back to the flamboyant and panoramic view of history with out that old glass of prejudice.

💡
Please make a bio- graphy of Sivaji from your research.
Where r these research materials available...i would love to read / research more about the “real” Indian history ...
I think we can start with the Footnotes and then dig deeper perhaps.
Sarita, Manu has access to libraries outside the public domain ones esp abroad as a genuine research scholar and author plus his proximity to Tharooor Sir allows him a clear gateway to lot materials at the Indian Parliament historical archives, too.. Then much more than this resources one must have a vision of what exactly his plan of work is, be diligent on that.. And 2 years Is a typical time period needed for a good book..

Britishers also employed Indians in civil and military services....by the same logic we should'nt have struggled against them..
When Persian texts translated into English then we got to know how they converted Kashmir population to Islam...not translated by Britishers but by Indians Post Independence
That's not true
@@nihadabdulhameed7365 that's true , muslims are violent invaders 1000 times worse than British
Perhaps you need to read Marx's thoughts on the effects of British rule in India, and contrast that with Mughal rule, and that of other Islamic rulers before them, to understand the difference.

You guys are glorifying a telugu kingdom without even bothering to find out how to pronounce their name. They are Kakatiyas with the stress on the first a and not the second one.
sgk999 كيفك. ؟
“Kaakateeya”
Facts are important in history than pronouncitation😉
@@alanalan268 How do you believe they are stating facts when they did not even research how to pronounce the name? A foreigner can be forgiven but one should have serious doubts if an Indian is claiming to tell history but cannot even say the name right.
@@sgk999 Check out who is Manu s Pillai, he had Started research at the age of 18 and took long six years to complete his first book.
Sir say shivaji maharaja
How can you expect someone to respect a dead and gone totally unrelated character when you use slave language to address him...Sir is a British title conferred by the Queen...No respectful citizen called any Tom Dick and Harry as Sir...only slaves did...
Why maharaja?? He was one of the people only not kings or emperors but ordinary people should be on the limelight.
Why say maharaja?
Shiva konddev , his father was Dadoji Konddev
