  • In this video, I encourage you to develop what the famous poet John Keats called "negative capability." This is the ability to hold many uncertain ideas in their heads at once. Here I explain why it is essential to challenge your beliefs to change or further instill them in your mind.
Robert Greene is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, Mastery, The Laws of Human Nature, and most recently, The Daily Laws.

There is a law called harmony. This law says that we are constantly harmonizing and being influenced by the dominating factors of the environment in which we exist. Interestingly enough, this law can also operate remotely. Which means you can harmonize with other people and absorb their ideas and knowledge without having to meet them in person. The problem is that this law can have negative effects too, especially when the person is exposed to negative influences of his environment. Thank you for choosing Robert. I am his mentee as well.

I would like to think the first book I bought and read to the end was 50th Law. I always felt the elders were misleading us and raising us with a lot of dishonesty. I also felt like everybody was conforming and afraid to tell or talk about certain truths. I therefore had a deep lack of trust towards older people or elders. When I read the first chapter of 50th law I couldn't believe... I couldn't believe I found elders who were so brave and telling the truth as it is, who were addressing a lot of concerns I had about a lot of stuff. U improved and/or changed lives with your writings. Thank you.

I have developed critical thinking somewhere in my 18 and through long time experience I can say that it helps you not only to reson but also to master difficult concepts as when you question everything you spend more time with the subject and develop stronger associations as well as glance in the aspects of the idea that were not initily stated.
On the other hand displaying such way of thinking in social and work environment is not a good idea, people often cannot understand why would anyone argue with themselves, they like certainty and critical thinking offten leaves conclusions out, general population do not like uncertainty so if you give your boss reasoning instead of an answer he doesn't like it too much.
Critical thinking is a beautiful thing, an ability to argue with yourself, once developed you will also have more constructive arguments with people because you will argue with their ideas for the sake of finding the best answer instead of arguing with people for the sake of dominating them (if the partner of your argument is a sane person of course).
And of course I am thnkful to Robert as he opens my eyes everytime he says something- that part where he explained that my thoughts are not mine, it really clicked with me, I cannot stop thinking about it. Thank you.

One of the biggest challenge a human mind face is not that it should question everything. In fact human mind is designed to question everything. But the challenge is when mind doesn’t find an answer to something, it forms an answer(or rationalise it) based on it’s limited knowledge. For eg: if we ask ourselves “what are we even doing with our life”, and as courageously this thought may have occurred to majority of us, very few would pursue this thought forward and rest would just accept that “life is……”. And the most dangerous part is they also attach an emotion to it.
In nutshell, mind is designed to question, also it designed to make meaning of abstract ideas/concepts, and because we are in constant flux of emotions(as robert mention in video) we attach that with every thought we have. Challenge is to keep the questions separate from the answers you find for them. Just because you can’t find answer easily, doesn’t mean your question is wrong, and not necessarily have to feel a certain way, and settle for assumption. Like in the above example, just because you can’t find answer to “what you are doing with your life” doesn’t mean you have to be sad, find meaning in everything you do in life.

    This is excellent, excellent advice!
We need streamlined thought process through structure, and Robert displays one that’s solid.
You don’t know what you don’t know - you DON’T EVEN KNOW/AWARE of what you don’t know!
Who should you listen to? Not your parents usually - unless they actually achieved how you want to be/do/have. Physical evidence and it’s observable to you - a reliable indicator.
Willingness to learn and willingness to change your mind - because everything we think we know almost, is wrong.
Many believe when they read or hear something and comprehend it well that they “know it” now. NO! Comprehending isn’t knowing and it takes thousands of repetitions and hours of being with that info and putting it to use before you actually know it. Knowing it means it’s automatic.
Be careful not to know something false. The Universe (1Verse) is mental, THE ALL is Mind. We live in the mind of GOD.
Robert clearly displays this understanding in depth. Knowing we know nothing boils down to humility - for anyone who’s ever been around addiction programs that’s the biggie they’re getting at.
Add to that you must do everything possible to Feel Good at all times. Feel as good as you can (without drugs/alcohol) and learning to feel better and better.

Robbert, I really like your books and your writing! I appreciate all the mental feast you forged for the readers! I really hope you can talk about how to be a writer, or how to actually start writing. I am a writer of beginning level. I will be grateful if you can share gems you collect as a wonderful writer. I knew it and dived deep into
This topic for all recent years. It is fascinating to know what in other people’s heads and how and why do we think what we think.
As a software engineer I can totally say that garbage in -> garbage out. We just operate on the data we were fed and massive impact on its digestion are making physical aspects of our bodies and how do we feel emotionally during this time
Looking forward to read what you will write in your book

I would add to this. Be patient. It's easy to fixate and waste time concentrating on a thought to determine if it's real. I find it better to write it down, move on, and set a time to think about it and only lot 30min or so to it. Whatever progress you make, write it down, then repeat it again if you're still uncertain. Overtime, the clarity you seek will be revealed. Be patient yet productive.

I'll practice being contentious about having two contradicting ideas and make a choice. I'll probably watch myself like a movie and watch it unfold as I eat pop corn. I make sound funny, but it will be done. Thank you Robert for you hard work.

Well philosophical skepticism may freed me from the insecurity of being "wrong" with the false sense of "being right about knowing anything" but I think it hinders my pursuit of knowledge. I feel there is gratification in reaching a "conclusion" and I feel even more gratification when the previous premise is rebutted and new knowledge is added.
I use it as a default setting but in low quantity to keep myself curious.
Personal opinion, just from this clip, I'm aware a clip or comment does not reflect a whole person's pov.

This is also why, when a “friend” tells me I’m overthinking, she doesn’t know that I look at her, as an underthinker…

The thing about being someone who sees things in contradicted sides.. Is that people think you have no value because you don't pick a side.
