I started as non-CDL hotshot. Was working on building a F450 to start CDL hotshot but decided to buy a semi instead. Real simple decision after comparing available loads on the loadboard!
@@mikelopez4148 Better money than non-CDL. It's far easier to keep your truck loaded... many more loads mean better paying options. With my non-CDL truck, I rarely ever found a back haul. I've taken loads from Georgia to NY, and deadheaded back home.
@@mikelopez4148 I've had Progressive for a few years thru a local agent. My hotshot insurance dropped so much I was able to pay in full which saved me another $1400+. When I added my semi, it was only $11K so I paid it in full also. The key is low CSA score AND a few years of paying those high rates without any claims.
I been a semi driver since I was 19 I’m 34 now I just started hotshot out of California…when watching these videos figure out what state they live in because alotve these dudes live in Texas or the mid west and they’re perception of “good money” isn’t the same as someone’s perception who’s from California if your already making 75k or more as an employee DO NOT GET INTO HOT SHOT FOR “MONEY” especially if your already a cdl driver…if your a cdl driver and spent time at the truck stops you have an advantage saving receipts and trying. To be in compliance and driving is like having two jobs im getting the hang of it tho

I’m also 22 almos 23 with 2 kids I recommend you to go and get your CDL if you don’t have the money go get it with a company and start working with them if you do have one apply for company and get your experience I have had my CDL for 2.5 years I own a dump truck but I would like to move out of Miami and what I’m going to do is apply for a company to get my experience then sell my truck and start hotshot best of luck 🤞
If you are leased on you can write off all your expenses. Also a new MC a lot of the better brokers/shippers won’t use. There are a lot of good companies that are established with good freight that only charge between 10%-15% so that being said you should consider that as they are dispatching, factering, better insurance rates ect so if you are running your own authority you are going to pay for dispatching, load boards, factoring ect so know the business before just jumping in
Just got my DOT and MC number. In my 21 day waiting period. I’ve got everything done except insurance (got a quote) and annual inspections. After that my hotshot journey begins
If your talking about the waiting period for your MC to age, it needs to be activate for that clock to start. Got to pay for insurance to activate it, no way around it. Your going to be paying for insurance 1-3 months before you start getting consistent loads, so make sure you can afford to pay it out of pocket without the need of hotshot work.

@@truckertavis yeah the Mc wont even become active till you get insurance. You can get the Mc and dot numbers for tax purposes, like getting an exemption for the purchase of a vehicle, trailer and equipment. You need it to be active atleast 90 days before you start getting consistent loads

You can only write off as much as your company has brought in. Any acclimated CPA/accountant should be able to make those refunds look pretty good the first five years in business.

Don’t get your motor carrier numbers first… lease on learn the game get the knowledge then get your own numbers 2-3 years later. Starting out with your own numbers is a 99% failure rate if u don’t have knowledge of the industry. I have 2 non cdl guys lease on that are doing well with two newer truck. Everyone gotta learn there own niche what works for others may not work for them is what people have to understand.

Yes you still can do hotshot trucking but as long as the truck has an automatic transmission and a gooseneck setup. Technically a gooseneck setup is a “ball and hitch” style connection which does not fall under the definition of fifth wheel. Hope this helps!

I have a flat bed so im not a car hauler but I do look for cars when im in desperate need and the price to move a car is horrible. you have to have a 5 car hauler and be ready to work your ass off. there are more cars than anything therefor a lot more people in the car game with 10 car haulers your competing against. You might have to just try it for yourself because one thing I have learned out here is that no one really knows their numbers. I would trust anything but your own first hand research and use other as just guidance but maybe not the whole picture. hope that helps, Thanks Ruben

Ya I mean from what I have heard rates are way down from the covid golden era that I never experienced. I know the 53' Step deck has helped me out on the load boards but if you know what areas to go to and not go to you should be good. My brother is holding his own out there with his 40'
I have a 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. Great benefits but my commission has taken a hit this year so I’m making less than I normally get. Would it be worth it to only hot shot on the weekends. I do have a CDL no restrictions. Thought I might be able to start off on the weekends and if it’s a fit then quit the 9-5 and do it full time.

Or use your new authority and grind it out on your own till your Mc is well matured ?
There are many levels of brokers and the kind of authority they are looking for. Pretty much no-one will touch you if your authority is not at least one month old. Some want 3, 6, 12 or even 24 months. So to get the best paying loads, you need to age your authority so you can do business with the better brokers. So here's how you deal with that. DON'T quit your paying job just yet. Save your $$$ to buy all your equipment. As soon as you are able, get your insurance for your truck so you can get your authority WHILE STILL MAKING A PAYCHECK. Let it age and when you can't stand it any longer, go hit the road. This is what I did. By time I bought a semi, my authority and insurance history was good enough that adding the semi was pretty cheap.

Some brokers won’t work with you at first but just make the phone calls. And sell yourself. Make the broker feel comfortable to work with you. Most have rules they won’t break but after 90 days you’ll be good

@@temitopegbolagade5864 why buy a truck and trailer twice when you could get it from the start? Just start off cdl and invest once instead of having make 2 huge investments. Plus non cdl is very hard to run and not come in overweight. Can’t do much with a 12-16k gvwr trailer once you subtract whatever weight is at the trailer axles form the gvwr. If you think your going to run non cdl, and then step up to a semi truck, not going to happen unless you got real deep pockets. For my MC, I was quoted 57k year for insurance because my CDL isn’t ATLEAST 2 years old. So I will be driving cdl in a 5500 to get the experience I need for the insurance company. Insurance companies don’t want to insure drivers without cdl experience. I can get bobtail insurance for 1800 year, but that means I’d have to lease on to someone and that’s not going to happen.
The $5000 to $7000 to get a cdl is enough to finance a used F250 2016 and a 40 feet trailer and start making small small money and later go get that cdl and later upgrade to a semi. If I have enough cash then I will go do cdl and start with cdl hotshot set up. But for someone with limited funds it’s practicable to start non cdl hotshot and save up.

That's exactly why I have. 01 f550 with 169k. Was a stake body but I removed the body and I'm converting it to manual.

2-3 years ? Some learn and get there number within a year and just past a year
If you can afford it, don’t be someone’s lackey, get your own Mc from the start and reap all the reward for your work.

You don’t need to expense factoring fees since the income from your factoring company already has the percentage deducted.

Factoring is around 2% of load and is deducted before you get your cut. 2% is a small price to pay to guarantee you get paid.

Non cdl is a waste of money in my opinion. Why go non cdl, just to have to upgrade your truck and trailer when you do go cdl.

Plus non cdl is very hard to run and not come in overweight. Can’t do much with a 12-16k gvwr trailer once you subtract whatever weight is at the trailer axles form the gvwr.
If you think your going to run non cdl, and then step up to a semi truck, not going to happen unless you got real deep pockets. For my MC, I was quoted 57k year for insurance because my CDL isn’t ATLEAST 2 years old. So I will be driving cdl in a 5500 to get the experience I need for the insurance company. Insurance companies don’t want to insure drivers without cdl experience. I can get bobtail insurance for 1800 year, but that means I’d have to lease on to someone and that’s not going to happen.

The $5000 to $7000 to get a cdl is enough to finance a used F250 2016 and a 40 feet trailer and start making small small money and later go get that cdl and later upgrade to a semi.
If I have enough cash then I will go do cdl and start with cdl hotshot set up. But for someone with limited funds it’s practicable to start non cdl hotshot and save up.
