    I stepped off the QM2 about 12 hours ago after having crossed the Atlantic and our crossing was apparently one of the smoothest ever. How different it could have been.

    I've made three North Atlantic crossings in her, in 2004, 2005, and 2016. By the last one, things had changed. Mostly young Eastern European hotel crews, and "Hamilton Bermuda" was on her stern, instead of "Southampton." That Cunard magic was gone as well.

    I stood on the Golden Gate Bridge as she passed under. The deck was close enough to the bridge that you could jump off the bridge and safely land on the queen. Not very many pedestrian bridges in the world that allow such a close view while stamding directly over such a large ship.

    There is a pilot boat in each port which comes alongside the ship when he is finished, it will also deliver him to the ship when it is arriving into a port. He will call the boat on the radio and then an Officer escorts him down to a hatch in the side where he climbs down a ladder to embark the boat to take him back to shore.

    I always considered it interesting that a P&O Captain was named Commodore of the Cunard Fleet. Bypassing the Cunard captains who had worked for years to be in line for the promotion. Then there is Alistair Greer who was a P&O employee for years. To shed light on why some of you may have heard Cunard feels "very P&O" is because Princess/P&O runs, manages & designs for Cunard. QE/QV were designed by P&O Lead Designer Therese Anderson & didthe recent QM2 refit. Cunard is a shell of its former self

    BTW, Titanic was also an American owned ship. Britain's White Star Line was owned by the IMM-an American company that owned several shipping lines. It later reverted to British ownership before merging w/Cunard in the 1930s,

    Queen Mary 2 is NOT a cruise ship like the Oasis of the seas, Carnival Dream, Disney Dream, Norwegian Jewel…etc.

    @hurro67 It's also British designed, operated and managed. P&O handles a great deal of Cunard's operations while Princess Cruises handles much of the onboard operations and design og both Icky Vicky and the QE. Lead designer Therse Anderson, who gave us the Love Boat, also designed the last refit for QM2 and her upcoming refit at the end of the year. She may have strong UK owenrship ties..but she is a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel. NO desire to even look or travel on these Carnival ships

    @Lufthansa631: On a 7 night crossing (they've slowed the crossing time down due to fuel prices since this show was shot) there are 4 formal nights where most men where a tuxedo. The first and last night is "elegant casual" (jackets but no ties required) since everyone's still busy packing or unpacking. There's one Semi-formal night where a dark suit is appropriate.

    Nobody would yell that on today's ships. A radar would detect it and the bow thrusters would be turned on making the ship shift to the side much faster. Before the rudder and shaft propellers were the new. Now the QM2's mermaid pods eliminate the need of a propeller, she has a stronger engine and bow thrusters (propellers on the side of the front of the ship) to make her move faster.

    On night of the September 10th-11th 1995 the QM2 was slammed by a 95 foot high wave, followed by two smaller waves. The captain, Captain Warwick, reported winds to 130 miles per hour with average wave heights of 40 feet.
    The 95 foot wave hit as most passengers were asleep in their beds at 4:10am.
    The captain said, "At 04:10am the rogue wave was sighted right ahead, looming out of the darkness from 220°, it looked as though the ship was heading straight for the white cliffs of Dover. The wave seemed to take ages to arrive but it was probably less than a minute before it broke with tremendous force over the bow. An incredible shudder went through the ship, followed a few minutes later by two smaller shudders. There seemed to be two waves in succession as the ship fell into the 'hole' behind the first one. The second wave was of 28-29 meters, whilst breaking, it crashed over the foredeck, carrying away the forward whistle mast.

    Thats why you read your contract before taking the job. There are some great contracts , my wife used to be part of the deck crew and was making around 3,800(clear) a month + full benefits. Ontop of that she got free use of amenities ect ( provided a paying customer wasnt using) , she says it was one of the best jobs she ever had. So the pay isnt fantastic but its better than equivilent kind of jobs on land.

      @viktoralmen1060 5 років тому

      Dont think a bowtruster had make any differens for TT. Because when a ship make way into the water in high speed the bowthrusters doesent have any force. Turbulens from the waterstreaming in high speed make them useless, thats why QE 2 have doors in the tunnels and close them in the sea. Maybe a radar had gained them but like so often in history it wasent invented at that time.
      1 st ship who had it.. Hard to know, some kind of workboat and ferrys where early to aply it.

    It's Commodore and Captains came from Cunard's managers P&O/Princess Cruises
    It's company is British in name, managed and operated out of Miami Florida
    It's funds are Miami controlled
    It's maiden voyage was from Britan, and an unmitigated disaster.
    It's headquarters RECENTLY was made in the UK, largely in name only. Beforehand Cunard was headquartred in Los Angeles sharing operations and staff with Princess Cruises. Before that, Cunard was based in Miami.

    I heard jobs on cruising shit are rubbish:
    1) If youre doing "dirty job" youre not allowed on the deck between passengers it means for months you're prisoner under deck ,no chance to enjoy travel
    2) There is no "minimum wages" on ships thats why there are so many guys from Third World working for peanuts,so money is poor ( apart from officers etc.)
    3) They can grab you to work at any moment-"day off" for waiter means you dont work dinner time but you still have to work breakfast and supper

Carnival Corp also owns 100% of Holland America which is an even more 'seperate' division than Cunard. Cunard was in fact run by California based Princess Cruises for a short period after QM2 was built. Today Cunard is run out of Carnival's UK offices BUT Cunard line is still 100% American owned and the Miami offices makes ALL the final decisions

    @transonicbuoy1 I perfectly agree. We have strived in our quest to become economically viable, to such an extreme that we have become little more than an island with a magnificent cruise line. Once, we were synonymous for our navy. Now, we are renowned for our tea.

    ITS A BRITISH SHIP. And was funded mostly by Britain.

    • @NazmusLabs

      Mr. Sir a cruise ship cannot cross the Atlantic Ocean. An ocean liner like the RMS Titanic and the RMS Queen Mary 2 as seen on this video are designed to cross the Atlantic even on stormy weather. A cruise ship would likely topple over and sink. Also, an ocean liners are faster and more powerful.

    • @cafsixtieslover
      @cafsixtieslover 6 років тому

      I was on the QM2 a couple of years ago. Ocean liners have a totally different atmosphere to cruise ships, an atmosphere of elegance and classiness and an era of time gone by that you don't find on a cruise ship.

    • @steve1978ger
      @steve1978ger 6 років тому

      There are plenty of cruise ships that cross the Atlantic. But an Ocean liner is faster and more sea worthy, like ships were built before transcontinental air travel. Most cruise ships today are just built to carry as many paying passengers as possible, and they go around the worst weather which is possible today thanks to satellites.

      Really? I heard that horn once, in '67 when she arrived in LA harbor. My mom came to America on the 1st Queen Mary, we had to see the ship arrive, & we were on a hill in Palos Verdes with what seemed like every Brit living in Southern California. When they sounded the horn pretty emotional moment for those British folks.

    I am disappointed to learn Cunard is a traded name only, a brand. Cunard's oeprations in the US are overseen by Princess Cruises. In the UK it is overseen by P&O Cruises. P&O/Princess has one design department and they also design Cunard's look (look at any Princess main lobby..it is all Cunard). Too bad...but everyone being owned by Carnival says whatever they touch will be cheapened.

    Do they really have formal night for the first night? If so, that is true class. Every night was formal night in the days of Titanic, Lusitania, Mauritania, and several other hstoric ocean liners of the past.
