A lady that I work with is from Belgium and she was telling me how they celebrated St. Nicholas day in Belgium. It was a really big deal! She continued the tradition with her daughter here in the United States.

My mom in the 50s said she got so excited when she got an orange in her shoe; supposedly, they were like a treat back then.

When I was teaching CCD I discovered the St. Nicholas Center's website. They have tons of information about St. Nicholas and even a children's page. The center even produced a live action DVD a few years ago about the life of St. Nicholas that might be appropriate for older children.

I learned about a German/Austrian tradition of baking Saint Nicholas bread on his feast day! It is simple almost pretzel bread that you shape in the form of a little Saint Nicholas. My husband and I attempted this a couple years ago and it turned out very cute. Maybe we'll try again this year!

You, do a great job always.. I’m a single Catholic woman I live my faith as close as one can possibly do. With that said I love how you always say I’m keeping it Catholic or something to that effect. I know your channel is Catholic but I’m a cradle Catholic with a long lineage of Catholics on both sides of my family. Like I like to say Catholic since before 33 A.D.. some of my family member who claim to be Catholic put up their tree right after thanksgiving and so one and so forth.. Absolutely love your spirit. May God bless you and yours!!

Wow, thank you, Heather, this video is so valuable, and has great ideas.
Definitely, I will do it for and with my grandchildren.
I really enjoyed it, and U took me back in time, where my mom, God rest her soul in peace, did it for my siblings and me, by filling our shoes with candy, pretending it was St. Nicholas who did it, on Christmas Eve.
Thanks again and God bless U. 🥰🙏👍👏❤️🌹✝️🧑🏼‍🎄🤶🎅🎁🎄

Recent Catholic convert and hopeful future mum here - how do you guys work Santa into your Christmas traditions alongside St. Nicholas? Do your kids believe in Santa? I'm undecided of exactly how I'm going to do it myself so I'm curious to hear how others do it :)

    • @ashleyslack5960

Welcome to the church! I'm a convert too! We have three little kids and are expecting baby number four. We simply don't participate in Santa Claus. To us there is no getting around to the fact that it is a lie. There is plenty of magic between the many feast days in Advent and the Nativity of Our blessed Lord. It needs no addition. The other issue I always had with Santa is that it forces us to conflate Saint Nicholas with Jesus Christ's birthday. Except Saint Nicholas's feast day is on December 6th! We should honor Saint Nicholas on his feast day, and we should absolutely honor our blessed Lord first and foremost on Christmas Day. In our home, presents come from Mom and Dad or extended family members and our kids know that. We have tons of fun without Santa and reindeer. This is not a popular opinion, but I promise you it has been well thought out. Good luck and may God bless you abundantly with new life.

Do you still do Christmas with Santa as well? I am a cradle Catholic and celebrated St. Nicholas when I was young in Catholic school. My school celebrated but my parents didn't if that makes sense. So it was something I forgot about when my kids were young. Now as my kids are getting married and engaged, I want to help them become better Catholic parents when that time comes.

  • @amymcminn2004

Do you do Santa on Christmas too? I'm still on the fence about it! I find it hard to stop.

    • @ashleyslack5960
      @ashleyslack5960 Рік тому +3

I know you asked Heather not other viewers, but in our family we do not do santa. We did briefly when my oldest was very little, and we have since stopped. We straight up went the honesty route, because we don't believe we should be lying to our children. Especially when it's not like it's a lie to protect their safety or something like that.
Consider this, Santa Claus is a conflation of Saint Nicholas and Christ's birth. Is that the way God would have it? That we are not only not giving all glory to him on his birthday, but are also celebrating the feast of Saint Nicholas on a day when it isn't his feast day? Saint Nicholas's feast day is on December 6th.
So for us it makes absolutely no sense to participate in the charade. There is plenty of magic to this time of the year when we celebrate Advent and Christmas as authentic Catholics. Just one mom's perspective to another. My oldest is seven, and we have a three and a 2-year-old. And baby four is on the way :-)

You're only young once. It's not like Santa was a serial killer. Let your kids enjoy it. If not they may ruin it for many other believers. That's just my opinion. I have nieces and nephews that are so excited about The Elf on the shelf. Happy Holidays to you and yours! 🧑‍🎄🎄⛄

I personally really like the one from Herald entertainment, Brother Francis. It's a paperback book and it is one of the most historically accurate ones that I have found. It's also very inexpensive, maybe $6.
