I feel that Charles Messier was so influential to astronomy, that I too would donate to keep the grave cleaned, at lease the initial deep cleaning. Keep up the interesting videos, thanks!
OMG I honestly had the exact same idea as you guys about crowdfunding to pay to take care of Charles Messiers grave!? I think it's a brilliant idea! Regarding your vid/trip to Messiers grave, I think that is the coolest trip ever! Messier did so so much to further humankinds understanding of the universe we inhabit, and our place within it! Tending to his grave and also continuing to pay our respects to him and his legacy is our duty impo! Wes, Liverpool UK.
I had no idea he was buried there. I'll be going back to France in the Spring and I'll definitively make sure to stop by and pay my respect to this great man. The idea of fundraising is awesome and I would definitively contribute. His grave is part of heritage and it would take too much time to lose it forever. Keep it up guys and keep inspiring us.
It’s a lovely idea for the Astronmy Community to take care of his resting place but you’d have to careful how messier grave/stone is treated. We wouldn’t want to do any harm that might be irreparable future generations. Like sandblasting, use of chemicals, just so it looks pretty. Guidance from a conservator, might be your first port of call, before trusting it in a contractor. Maybe reach out to a french Astronmy club who might take it on to remove weeds (and wash with a very soft brush.). Just my 2cents worth.
I know firsthand the difficulty in looking for and finding gravesites, so I applaud your diligence. Especially for Charles Messier, who contributed so much to astronomy. I would definitely support your quest for the 100 year upkeep (or whatever works). Happy Hunting!
Cool idea guys! - but surely it'd have to be cleaned for 110 years, one for each Messier object! :-D (I'm unsure the cleaning company would be operational still though to carry out said work!)
What a great video you guys ! I think that it was very cool that you found him and paid tribute to his final resting place..Please, keep the awesome videos coming !!
It's amazing I think that he managed to record clusters like M6 and M7 from the latitude of Paris at about 49 degrees north they must be very low and Shaula, the Scorpion's Sting, must be virtually on the horizon. It's probably not possible now to see them from Paris due to light pollution?I saw them from Florence, Italy, which I think is 44 N and it was very low.On a trip to a rural village north of Oxford, England called Kings Sutton,52 N, and Shaula was too low probably actually on the horizon.
I was surprised to see the sad state of his grave. I would happily donate a little to a crowdfunding, just make sure that the graveyard isn't protected by any cultural heritage laws that prevent anyone from doing any work on it. Charles Messiers memory deserves more than a grave overgrown by moss and vines.
Good, fun video. Your idea for the flowers and upkeep on Charles Messier's grave sounds like a very nice gesture. Maybe shoot for a 1 or 10 year goal. It could inspire others to do the same and follow in your footsteps. I see nothing wrong with it.
I am in favor of cleaning and maintaining Messier's grave. This is just as appropriate as building museums; it helps, in some way, not only to honor Messier but also to educate the public. I do think the IAU or another major organization should be involved, not just individuals. Maybe even a grant from the French government. Also, I am intrigued by the inscription you found and couldn't read. If you can get a legible copy of it and it's Latin, I'll be glad to translate it.
Thanks Michael, I will contact the IAU and see what they think about it, that's a great idea. As for the inscription, I sadly still can't tell what is written as it is not in good shape :/
Great video! I love Pere Lachaise but wasn't into astro last time I went many years ago so never looked Messier up. I like the idea of the crowdfunder but would there be any regulations to stop you doing this? If not, go for it!
It would be great to clean the graveside…do what you can for now…I’d make a donation…I’d also be interested in contributing to a Messier Scholarship Fund for students pursuing careers in astronomy.
Not a bad idea but I wonder if he would have preferred using that money to fund education opportunities for inspiring younger generations to explore the heavens. I guess this achieves that goal too in a different way. No worries!
Charles lives on in every astronomy book, star chart, and at every star party world wide. He is eternal!
Yes he is eternal. He’s one of those people who will be remembered forever.
What a shame no one has taken care of this great man’s grave! Thanks for finding it.
I feel that Charles Messier was so influential to astronomy, that I too would donate to keep the grave cleaned, at lease the initial deep cleaning. Keep up the interesting videos, thanks!
Thank you for showing us Messier’s resting place.
There is a picture of his grave in Wikipedia [search Charles Messier] taken in 2011. No vine, and it appears well taken care of.
It’s a super idea. We must never forget these influencers who mean so much to us .

Really nice idea. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed your production it was very nostalgic and beautiful.
Good to see you guys back on UA-cam. I also really enjoy such astro „sidequests“.

Glad you seem to be doing well Ant! Thanks for that video. Sad to see his grave in such horrible shape. Happy holidays to both of you!
Bravo pour cette super vidéo 👍
Your idea at the end of the video is good.
Did you find out what text was on the front of the tomb after the cleaning?
Thanks, and no I don't know what is inscribed on there sadly :/

cool video guys. I wonder if they buried him with a scope?
Excellent . Bises à vous deux. Alain
Superbe épisode qui mérite d'être partagé.👏
Merci Philippe !
Top effort guys . The messier grave was awesome. I am with you, sad to see the state of his grave. His work was awesome for time.

Haha 110 does make much more sense than 100 years! 😅
great idea !!!
What a humble grave for such a great figure in history.

Interesting video guys, very different. Shame to see the grave in a bit of a state. Was nice to see someone had took the time to tidy it up a bit.
I think its a good idea.
Does anyone have the gps coordinates for the site?
Your video inspired me to visit the grave of this Great astronomer which I did last week.
joyeuses fetes de fin d année

Welcome back!
I've also been to that place sand looking for some graves. So difficult to get lost. That place is so huge and complex

We stand on the shoulders of those who passed before us… or something like that
Wait, wasn't this out a while ago? I feel like I remember this episode!
it was posted on instagram
Cool video, always good to pay our respects to our forefathers, next time im in Paris I Will defo go there.
Instead, why not contact organisations like the IAU and ask for their assistance.
Very good idea 🤔
I would give a few bucks for CM gravesite it’s a good idea
Классно 😁

Sad that his grave has been left without being cared for. That needs to get rectified!
Yes it's so sad especially since many graves in that cemetary are always full of flowers!
Not a bad idea but I wonder if he would have preferred using that money to fund education opportunities for inspiring younger generations to explore the heavens. I guess this achieves that goal too in a different way. No worries!
Do not touch this tomb with ancient charm. :)
Are those fries... or French Fries? :)
They’re Freedom Fries of course! 😁
@@jlecomte0719 of course... 😁
