The original ending was supposed to be a reflection of his WW1 experiences coming home to haunt him, from what i recall. It does come out of left field when you first read Lord of the Rings.
The Scouring of the Shire was purposely removed from the movie, aside from a time issue it was felt that the part was fairly anti-climactic, Sauron's fall should be the End of the war. The heroes returning to the Shire, untouched by and blissfully ignorant of all that had happened in the world outside was more fitting.
Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings was done for Cinematic effect and I personally think he did a brilliant job.....however J. R. R. TOILKEIN's version will always outshine all other interpretations, a master storyteller and a man blessed with an amazing mind, no body can better his written saga. Just imagine if Peter Jackson had filmed 2 alternative endings, one as he saw fit and other by Mr Tolkein!!! Peter, if you're reading this..... I mean they brought Peter Cushing back from the grave to appear in the latest StarWars trilogy, I'm sure bringing back Sir Christopher Lee wouldn't be a challenge.

Saruman was killed in the end by Wormtongue who slit his throat in a fit of madness and also killed while trying to escape.

The real question is why didn't Saruman just build a new staff?
They did an alternate ending showing wurmtongue killing him
why are there no movie about this?
