    It was Morgoth that lied to Ungoliant. He roped her in to eat the trees by promising that she could eat her fill. He fled after the trees were killed and she followed.She was not full, and wanted more. She sensed that he had objects that created a lot of light, and she wanted to eat those. Ungoliant had gotten so large by eating from the trees, that even Morgoth was afraid of her. He promised her the Silmarils, and eventually ended up giving her fake ones to eat. She sensed that he was lying to her and she tried to eat him with the silmarils. He then screamed so loud that all of his Balrogs came to the rescue.

    If you look carefully at the writing, Ungoliant wasn't actually a spider. She was an evil being who took a spider-like form. If you want to see something closer to what Tolkien likely intended, Jazza has a video where he drew her daughter Shelob based purely on book description. There are features mentioned like a neck, horns, and a stinger, none of which a spider actually has. Shelob's described more as a demonic monster whose closest resemblance is to spiders, with word like "most like a spider she was," indicating something that shares a lot of basic features but most definitely doesn't look the same as one. Jazza's drawing of Shelob going purely by the book writing is actually far more horrifying to see than just a giant spider, and it's worth looking at some of his stuff because he does a bunch of drawings based purely on writer description. Sometimes it's done with someone else choosing the character or creature, giving him some description in notes, and him just drawing whatever he's given, only getting to know what it is after he finishes. As a fun one, Cthulhu's original descriptions by Lovecraft are pretty much exactly what image comes to mind for most thinking of him.

      It's also the creature in IT according to some

    • @Dokgo22
      @Dokgo22 Місяць тому

      The problem with that is its js his imagination as we've had fans draw the iron thrown from asoiaf yet grrm still saying it's not quite his vision several times the authors pov and the readers tho similar will still perceive 2 at times vastly different outlooks from a description of something.

    • @UnswimmingFishYT
      @UnswimmingFishYT 29 днів тому

      @@Dokgo22 There's definitely room for a level of interpretation in exactly how the features look, but the basic creature is very visually distinct as what she is even if the original picture the author had in mind can't be confirmed.
      Not like the Nazgul's winged mounts, where further description was given outside the story and Tolkien compared them to pterodactyl type animals. Taking that basic outline and adjusting it to fit the book descriptions is gonna be very close to what was intended, with the only improvement being if the man was still walking around in order to draw it.
      Best monster description ever is Cthulhu. If you look carefully at everything describing him physically in the original writing, it adds up to be exactly the way people usually draw him. Almost no room in his description to vary too much.

      Is that why in the Shadow of Mordor game, they make Shelob a woman?

    • @UnswimmingFishYT
      @UnswimmingFishYT 13 днів тому

      @@renderlifestyle Yes, that's their interpretation of her mother choosing the form. Considering Shelob was born that way and stayed the same for centuries just getting bigger and fatter, I think it's inaccurate. I think Ungoliant was just drastically stronger in every way than her offspring, especially with Shelob being the only surviving one for unknown reasons.

      If they’re older than Sauron, and possibly Melkor, then they would’ve been enemies of Eru Illuvatar or used by him during the Song of Ainur to create the universe. So they wouldn’t be weak beings and could be a bigger threat than either dark lord ever was if they were set onto the surface.

      @@The.Lore.Seeker Possible theory crafting, since the written lore of these are pretty scarce. The art work and depictions are so unique compared to all other denizens of Arda. We're they part of Erus song but fell out of alignment. Were they beings seperste from Eru entirely and the originator of evil. I'm a huge Lovecraftian/Eldritch horror fan and finding out about the Nameless Ones was so exciting. It's a shame Tolkien didn't elaborate more about them. Thuringwethil was such a great character totally WASTED by Tolkien as he avoided to have a more accurate idea about her fate, though it seems it was ill-fated one, as Luthien found her magical dark-cloak just thrown randomly on the floor as she is leaving Sauron´s fortess after having defeated him and rescued Beren alongside Huan´s help but... just suddenly she dones that magical cloth and asumes a disguise as her to infiltrate into Angbad alongside Beren who is turned into the deceassed werewolf too, so... did Thuringwethil died too by chance on this implication off-scene?
    However this made some lost of being more explicit on her fate and having a rather more interesting scene fighting Luthien and being killed by her or with Huan´s help as had happened earlier to Sauron. (Also makes perfect sense to have killed Thuringwethil as she might have gone faster to inform Morgoth about the defeat of his main minion, but... suddenly she is no working as the usual messenger so... Luthien is able to have her disguise and to infiltrate to get the Silmaril, all very convenient with the sudden dissappearing of Thuringwethil so... though Tolkien never says it, she died somehow but... why to hide that?!!)
    It seems that Tolkien hated to have openly ill-fates for evil FEMALE antagonists on Middle-Earth by some reason. He is so openly stating on male ones but female-ones besides on being very few on her own, their ill-fates are so AMBIGUOUSLY OPEN and off-scene that seems as if he was doing some sort of pro-feminist working there, thinking of this as missogynist issues rather that proper justice retailation on them but... seems that Tolkien felt into the naive narrow dychotomy of males prone to evil more than female, and to be rather apologetic on them being not so harsh or openly stating their proper ill-fate retribution at their end: all the very few evil females (Ungoliant, Shelob, Queen Beruthiel and Thuringwethill, and even Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, got very loose and vague ends for all the nasty evil deeds they did, and so VERY WASTED characters!!)
    He got the opportunity to make a good stand of a great woman of goodness on Luthien against an evil one on Thuringwethil but no... he MISSED A GREAT TIME!!

    And you know whats still one of the best writings of the book? Humans are humans here, there are no overpowerd humans that can solo a balrog (and no wizard are no normal humans). Its not a power fantasy (altough i enjoy those too), and there is no “perfect chosen one” its nations forming a front against ancient evil. Frodo might be “the one” thats needs to throw the ring into mount doom. But if he didnt have his friend with him at the end a new era of evil would be born. Its not the story about a small group saving the world, its a story about nations rising up helping the core group even when they fall apart.

      Not sure I agree with you regarding the humans as the ancient Numenorians were meant to be super human and Aragorn obviously has some of those traits. But I think it's because Tolkien is just far more subtle with how he portrays power. It's not cheap and flashy and it's very much embedded in the earth, surroundings and spiritually. Which for me makes it far more powerful and intimidating than any other fantasy because it feels real and immersive

    It would be nice if the creators of the lord of the rings will create a background story of those so called Nameless things which was thought to be older than morgoth himself. I wonder what sort of dark primordial powers created those things and how powerful such creator was. Come to think of it, it might be a stand alone series of its own if it will be turned into movie. I can only imagine those ancient primodial heroes that will serve as archenemies of these Nameless things especially on how powerful they are as they were able to cast such powerful Nameless beings into the depths of the earth, never to be seen again and just become some sort of folktales among those dwelling on Middle Earth... 😊

    Tevildo would’ve most likely been a bogeyman of sorts among house cats and their kitten offspring, a monster to enslave them and kill their human owners that they loved as a parent (so theorized a friend of mine who’s a cat lover). Tolkien didn’t hate cats, but I can image he would’ve built up Tevildo as a creature that regular cats would fear and utterly hate.

    10:39 I think we can actually make an educated death about the nameless creatures. It all rests on the sentence that they are older than Sauron...which means that they cannot originate from Middle Earth. Sauron is one of the fallen Ainur/Maiar - he himself is older than Middle Earth which means that no creature from Middle Earth can be older than him.
    This only allows one conclusion: They originate from the Void.
