How To Light Trap Insects!

- How to setup light trap for insects is pretty simple and I will show you. There are so many options when it comes to finding insects .... bugs. Consider location, and when to set up a light trap to attract and capture insects and invertebrates. Entomology involves lots of light traps and luring insects in to study and photograph them. As for the lights, there are also many different types that will attract different types of insects. My favorites are U.V. blacklights (ultraviolet), florescent lights and the best are mercury vapor lights. I use a Progeny portable power generator (battery) to plug the lights into and stay mobile and lightweight. All this and more will be covered in this video. #entomology #lighttrap #insects

If i had to give this video marks out of 10 i'd give it 20. Excellent, all round, concise information from how and where to find, and what was found. Superb camera work and some stunning examples of the beauty of nature from colours and patterns to form.

I've used a brand new white towel which glowed bright blue with ultra violet light and a white fluorescent light and attracted tons of insects.Both were battery operated. That female true katydid was priceless. Side note when hunting tree crickets or katydids I like to use a Tostitos dip sauce jar because they are a wide jar. This prevents escape or injury to the subject in most cases. I got to get my hands on the Eastern North Americans beetles handbook. I still have the Audubon guide to North American insects and spiders since i was about 10 years old. Very useful.Thank you for sharing and happy hunting. Salute to you my friend.

A note for light choices. You can purchase UV LED light bars that have a USB cable for VERY cheap online and you can run those for hours off of a powerbank. UV is the way to go for attracting insects.
There is so much great knowledge in this video, I learned a lot. Setting up my own light trap is something I really wanted to learn how to do, so this is gonna be a video that I come back to a lot. And you got a ton of cool finds, even with low overall abundance the moths really represented well. That Imperial Moth was especially cool, I love saturniids. Great work Chris!

I do this in my garden to collect moths for some of my mantis. Really easy and doesn't take long, just don't do it on a full moon or it halves your collection rate.
Books - still have my nature ones from when I was a kid. The internet is great for info, but sometimes looking through a book just works.

Dang, that exploding bulb in the studio sounded crazy. "I'm just looking for insects, I swear" 😂 Love those bigger moths, so cool looking. My buddy from the zoo said AZ during the monsoon, new moon thing works well for the sheet/light setup. Same conditions for good herping out here. Not sure how that works out east where you are though. Great info in this one, Chris. You're pushing me to do this, we'll see.
Do it, Man! Who knows what you'll see. For me, it is a lot of fun. Kind of like the lottery, but it comes to you, lol. Well, maybe not quite as cool. I definately agree about the new moon or a cloudy night. There is still time for big moths up here, but imo, the peak has passed. Do it.....do it.

You definitely need to adjust the white balance and either find enough light, or use a tripod. If they are on a sheet, it moves in the breeze.

Hi Chris, Very good video, however your 10W YKDtronics LED light is the wrong wavelength at 390-395 nm. I bought a similar light, online at 50W (over $50.00) & at that same 390-395nm wavelength (never checked specs carefully!) & it was totally useless for attracting bugs. The correct wavelength should be at 360-365 nm... these are also available & are the ones you need. All B.L. tubes for attracting insects are labeled BL with normal external white appearance unlit & bluish lit up ...NOT BLB with black coating which are those (along with your 10W YKDtronics LED light) the wrong wavelength at 390-395 nm used to enhance colors in bars etc. Higher wattage (100 - 1,000Watt) M.V. & M.H. bulbs are excellent as well... I run a huge 1,000W M.V. trap all summer long ...off of my house mains (along with 7 other combo B.L. & M.V/M,H traps on automatic timers). Been moth trapping & hunting at sheets for 47 yrs... Hope this helps viewers.
