This movie will help educate us to how hard it is to start over in a new country, important and beautiful.

This preview just hit the core in me… it’s just a few minutes but it portrays everything we encounter as immigrants.

This movie was sad but optimistic, this woman was hard working raising a single child but you knew times would get better, as the boy grew up the load on the mother would get lighter and alont with Simon life would indeed get easier so she could finally enjoy it. But then the terminal cancer.
Poor woman came to the country, raised a child and will die and the only thing she really experienced was hard work in an alien country and even Simon was really just your average midwestern american.
    I cried multiple times

I was somehow really related to my personal situation. Like, I insist (?) to be called by my korean name. It’s obviously a name cannot be caught by foreigners at one time. Whenever they dont get it, even tho I expected that, sometimes it makes me a fucking ailen

So many films at TIFF this year seem to be cheaply trafficking in nostalgia.

@@vaderstar Have you seen the movie? Firstly, it takes place in Canada. But I said "trafficking in nostalgia" because the film sloppily inserts pieces from the time period at times. Also, I was an immigrant from Taiwan living in Vancouver around the same time as the character and I was also close to the same age. The racism that the character faces doesn't line up with some sort of general reality...only in a melodramatic sense maybe. That specific kind of victim narrative is just so overdone and completely lacking nuance.

@@vaderstar "30 years things have got worse for those who are marginalized" Huh? While racism obviously still exists, statistically speaking, things haven't gotten worse. They've gotten much better. You're essentially denying reality. Serious. Look up at the overall stats.
