I don’t understand anyone who thinks this generation of 1 Series coupe/cabrio is ugly. I find it to be one of the best car designs of all time, so well proportioned and purposeful.
I own a 135i now.. and coming back to this review, the car is exactly how he explains it. I absolutely love this car. Not only does it has amazing power, but it also luxurious. Maybe not as much featured as he M3, but it isn't empty handed either! It is such a fun car to drive in for the younger age group (~23 to ~35 years of age?) Love the sound of the car! not too loud and not so quiet. Just perfect Believe it or not the cops won't pull you over in this either! (Sorry to the person in evo)
The car has absolutely classic looks; a bit of mustang, a bit of e46 M3 - personally I prefer it over the e90, and I think it'll also age a lot better. A classic in the making, imho, and that's why I'm buying one.
If you gave the 135i proper non runflat tires and a set of m3 rear subframe bushings paired woth m3 front/rear control arms which i got plus koni yellow struts performance springs and it will outhandle almost every car out there with ease
Im startin with all rubber and tyres first…. Them suspension n steering… Then comes the toys and the injector fuel etc…. I. The end coilover and single turbo? Cams?
I owned both a 13' M3 with competition package and a 13' 135i with M package. The 135 handles great but you just feel better behind the wheel of the M3, the exhaust note on the high reving V8 is pure magic.
This was my very first bmw but sadly it gave me nothing but problems. At one time I had my transmission completely rebuilt and sent to Germany. Luckily it was still under warranty and I remember the bill came out to $35000.00 cad. The fuel pump caused so many problems. I would be driving and then all of a sudden loss of power, one time I was getting onto the bridge and somehow I managed to find a spot to park otherwise it would’ve caused a big traffic jam. It drives amazing but the problems with this vehicle was a nightmare. I knew more problems were going to occur on this car and just before warranty was about to end I traded it for a brand new 2013 328. That was such a reliable car but just not as exciting as the 135i.
recently bought a 2010 135i love the little thing, love smoking wankers in there ss commodores or silly p platers in there shitbox xr6s at the lights, looks like jane goes like tarzan
as a 1 series owner, without swapping in M suspension/sways and better shocks/springs, there's NO WAY the 135 will keep up with the M3. it's hilarious to even compare.
I know this is 10 years back but shame on you Top Gear Australia for continuing saying that this is a girls car…. It’s a car, anyone can drive it…if it look less meaner, does not reflect the gender of the driver… what a loaf of crap guys
For the E9x you can get supercharger kits, ranging in power, but easily in the 550 - 750 BHP range. Ultimately, a bigger engine (4.2 liter vs 3.0 liter) wins the tug of war. However, the mileage you can get from the customized x35i is a lot better than the M3. I like the N54B30 for its cheap tuning capability. As a matter of fact, just from a software tune you can get around 400 BHP.
Stop thinking like a 22 year old, Tokyo-Drifter. Horsepower is nice but how a car feels and handles is more important than 0-60 mph times. It's the whole package that matters. You don't spend all day going in a straight line without turning do you?? lol
ah awesome. Can't believe I had to leave right before they finished building those!! Yeah, I pretty much sweated all day... Shower in the morning and after school, as well as in the evening. hahaha
I can't believe how expensive cars cost in Australia. $80k for a 135i and $180k for an M3? Insanity. But I suppose Aussies are used to that kind of pricing.
The 135i and M3 are in different performance classes. They made a mistake with this comparison. They should have put the 335i beside the 135i. Same engines.
I saw one of these the other day and couldnt believe my eyes when it said 135 on the back! a suprise when most of them are the pathetic 118d or similar. What an amazing car, and can achieve 30-40mpg 0-60 5.2 seconds now thats an achievement (as fast as a AMG E55)
@blutterback1234 over in the uk, a 135i costs £30,000. we get ripped off by high import tariffs here in australia. all for the sake of preserving an unprogressive local car industry. and the more expensive the car, the worse it gets. large luxury cars in australia (7-series et al) cost upwards of 250% more than those in the uk. it's ludicrous!
@gta4mythbuster Not Shan-grilla but St. Regis I think. Yeah, taxes suck here too but probably not as high as in Singapore. Yeah, I know, US car prices are just ridiculous! That's how it should be though. I didn't test drive the 135i but I've only heard good reviews about it and how people call it basically a M car. I've sat in one and the rear seats are even usable to some degree. So I would personally recommend it.
M135i only does it because of the amazing 8speed.. the engine doesn't have anywhere near the potential of the N54. and 5.4 is a high estimate, the fastest i've seen stock is about 4.9 vbox.
M3 is 4.0L 10k+ for teh supercharger installed with headers etc. on the M3 for about the.. say 600whp mark at best.. about 15-20k all up installed tuned all supporting mods. the N54 with 2k in bolt on's and tune, you can expect 450whp... with meth and upgraded turbos (another 3-4k), 550whp, and in a straight line it makes even a supercharged M3 look slow due to the fat midrange.
If I hire one of these on my upcoming trip, chances are they will only give me the entry level model with small engine - I don't know the model number they give it - but will it be any good?
@gta4mythbuster It's getting really cold now. Started to snow and it'll probably pile up soon. I remember a year ago, when I was in Singapore, I would die to see some snow but, now, I miss Singapore so much!!! Have they finished building Universal Studios in Sentosa?
this car just looks younger and sportier, you know? cooler! Let's face 70 percent of 3 series drivers are above 60 years old. Then the few that drive the m3s are middle aged CEO's.
@gta4mythbuster Nice cars wise, yeah. I would always see a Ferrari F430 or a Lambo Gallardo almost everyday in Singapore. It's almost like that here as well, but we also have a share of lousy cars here as well. Just like Singapore, Bimmers or Mercs (except Gullwing AMG) never turn heads. I love the 135i though. You gotta have at least a Bentley Continental! hahaha It's the same in Singapore right. What's that 6 star hotel called near Orchard?? You know, where like 3 Bentleys are always on a row.
The stock suspension in the 135i is a big disappointment. The feeling is closer to "Corolla" than "sports car". It can be fixed with aftermarket suspension upgrades and proper tyres.
Keep in mind this is Australia, they pay twice what Americans do. I drove an American spec M3 in Germany and I payed half of what the Germans pay for a car that is made in their own country. I stole mine for $64k, the same car down the street at the BMW dealership in Germany was selling for 105k euro! That is nearly twice the price!
Andy H Yeah...But the wage in Germany is twice that of America because these costs are all higher. Higher wages, higher taxes, higher living costs, higher everything. I live in Norway, it's much the same. It makes it very expensive for foreigners, but it's much less bad for those living there.
Andy H It's obviously not "twice" but it's significantly more. I lived in Germany for 3 years, I earned a lot more than I would for a similar job in the US and because of public transit actually existing, I payed a lot less in living costs too.
Imagine a world without Clarkson May or Hammand it would be a very dull and boring world indeed. Ok let me get out of here quick so i could watch the real top gear.
def a girls car but i dont mind. im tryin to byu a 2nd one cos they are amazing. top gear Australia on the other hand... I will just say one word, CRINGE
I don’t understand anyone who thinks this generation of 1 Series coupe/cabrio is ugly. I find it to be one of the best car designs of all time, so well proportioned and purposeful.
I think the e92 335i is much better looking. Not that the 135i is terrible, but definately not nearly as nice.
I own a 135i now.. and coming back to this review, the car is exactly how he explains it. I absolutely love this car. Not only does it has amazing power, but it also luxurious. Maybe not as much featured as he M3, but it isn't empty handed either!

Proper driver's car.

i love this guys opinion of the car. I love how the 1 series has hardly any features and is just a pure drivers car.
If you gave the 135i proper non runflat tires and a set of m3 rear subframe bushings paired woth m3 front/rear control arms which i got plus koni yellow struts performance springs and it will outhandle almost every car out there with ease

@@simonshek8701 yea i went further got the m3 steering rack as well feels awesome alone with apex wheels and new ps4s tires
The 135i with all the M Suspension parts and a few mods and well you're sitting very nice! Remember pre maintenence before modifications!
I owned both a 13' M3 with competition package and a 13' 135i with M package. The 135 handles great but you just feel better behind the wheel of the M3, the exhaust note on the high reving V8 is pure magic.

'At least I thought he said "runt"' lol
135i is just a tune away from 380-400 HP or more if you do some mods. And much cheaper to mod than an M3.
and then came the 1M
recently bought a 2010 135i love the little thing, love smoking wankers in there ss commodores or silly p platers in there shitbox xr6s at the lights, looks like jane goes like tarzan

Its possible a 135 just run no suspension. And it will be easy…. Just no bumps lol
2022 and now all the rubber is due to be changed… all rubber..
Hello!!! Im restorin the n54 135i single turbo kit last?
I know this is 10 years back but shame on you Top Gear Australia for continuing saying that this is a girls car…. It’s a car, anyone can drive it…if it look less meaner, does not reflect the gender of the driver… what a loaf of crap guys

no this is the right comparison because you must calculate weight/hp
Girl’s car?? That’s stupid, literally have seen one or two women driving these since they came out, all others have been driven by guys.
Ikr, especially the 1M. Finding a girl that drives a manual 1M is a rare breed.

Don't say kilowatts. It's horsepower.
Its Kilowatts in Australia.

@blutterback1234 well, that's 80.000 AUD, which is around 50.000 pounds sterling. Here in Norway though, it costs 80.000. Pounds!!
The only reason it gets called a girls car is because its the smallest in the range apart from the roadsters

@Senninha1960 check out the new 135i m.it alot nicer than the older.one.
