- The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Portal Wireless Headphone is pretty remarkable for reasons I didn't expect at first. The sound quality and build quality is excellent, as expected, but the versatility is remarkable. You can use this in Xbox Wireless mode, Bluetooth 5.1 (with AptX), Aux mode, and even USB-C DAC mode. This headset works not only on Xbox and Windows 10, but also on Playstation 5, Nintendo Switch, and more. @@pr1der mic monitoring or noise gate? In the app I showed in the review, you can adjust side tone/ANC but that only affects what you hear, not what your teammates hear. I haven’t seen a way to adjust noise gate yet, which is the ability to block background noise and what affects what your teammates here. I hope that helps
@@GadgetryTechI guess it's annoying for my people in the party because they can hear my gunshots and footsteps I think it has something to do with mic monitoring but there is no way to change it even through the Dolby atmos app on xbox

I think that pushed me over the line also, I have owned both Xbox and PS for the last few gens, I think the PS5 sucks a bit for me personally so will wait for PS5 Pro or PS5 mini before I jump into PS this gen but the fact this headset will also work on PS5 controllers is a great selling point for me, and by the time there is a PS5 refresh or Pro there should be a pretty decent library of content too

It's 2023 now, my Portal still work like new, everything that was said in the video is still true.
Hi, i'm planning to buy one of these. I have WH-1000XM4 and Beoplay EX. Bought the Beoplay EX like a month ago and I absolutely loved the sound quality, even feels better than Sony. Can I expect a sound quality like Beoplay EX from Beoplay Portal? Or should I lower my expectations to not get disappointed?
How has battery life held up?
@@Tyler-rf5sg I'm not using them every day, they have longer or shorter periods of use, but I didn't notice anything bad.

Best review on this headset by far..at the moment I'm using both the audio technica ATH-AG1X and the turtle beach Elite pro 2 with Dac. When I want to hear crisp flat sounds are used the ATH when I want to hear extremely loud I use the ELITE pro 2. SO SINCE YOU SAID THAT THESE WEREN'T THAT LOUD I'M HOLDING OFF ON MY PICTURES I THOUGHT THESE ARE GOING TO BE EXTREMELY CRISP AND EXTREMELY LOUD I RATHER JUST STAY WITH THE SETUP I HAVE CURRENTLY.

Make sure you play with the app for your phone along side the Dolby Atmos app on the Xbox to get that punchy base like you get when listening to Bluetooth music. Man that comfort though!

The connectivity to XBox is why I’m looking at these over others. But it’s not my primary reason and I’m really looking for a high end pair of headphones for music and travel. The fact that these do pair to XBox though is why I’m looking at these instead of Bose or even Apple ProMax’s. Appreciate the review.
I just bought a Corsair Virtuoso XT 17 days ago before watching this video. I bought this yesterday because of this video, via Amazon, and will be delivered tomorrow, can't wait. I won't be using this for XBOX but for a gaming laptop that has an OLED screen. I only play WoW TBC Classic so I'm going to use this for music and movies so I'm hoping it does well for all three.

I got these about a week ago and love them, great sound quality, very comfortable and easy to setup and use with XBox. I did struggle for a while on the price but I am glad I got them. All the features you mentioned here and the little details make it worth the cost.
Can your friends hear you clear, I got Penrose x and mic is awful so muffled. Thinking about getting these. Not seen any bad reviews on these yet

I agree 100% with what you said. As a Penrose and Portal owner, I won't lie about sound quality - the Penrose wins (especially on the default profile) but for everything else, the Portal wins. For example, playing Forza with these headphones for a few hours - no problem, with the Penrose you can't last more than half an hour without taking a break.

With the sound it's the way B&O are, they favour natural tuning and accuracy over everything else out of the box, handy to have the Beosonic in the app to fine tune for personal taste. Hello, please allow the end user the option to disable/enable the Bluetooth signal when the Xbox Wireless connection is active. This is an important feature for many who are really interested in making a purchase, but are not because of the lack of it. Thanks for considering it, if you do.
John, the headset is fantastic. My only issue is I just feel like the Xbox game audio sounds weaker than the Bluetooth audio. Anyone else feel the same way?

Is not being able to use the xbox wireless AND bluetooth at the same time an oversight? A lot of people in the gaming community are feeling this is a deal breaker because of this...

Just did a test on the ms headset bass boost and bass plus 12 lol for 99$ this ms wireless xbox headset is insane
Just bought the Xbox Wireless Headset but I’m putting the Beoplay Portal on my Christmas list.... that blue & gold version looks stunning. Dolby Atoms is a game changer, even when just watching movies!!
The Xbox headset is sooooo horrible. Get the LucidSound LS35x, for $125.
Thanks for the detailed review. The tip about connecting to Playstation through USB was an especially good tip. I'm still trying to decide between Bang & Olufsen Portal and Penrose X. The Penrose X seems more performance for the money, but the convenience and slick design of the Portal is so nice.
Penrose is very different anyway. Planar vs dynamic. The Penrose should be better in terms of raw performance for games for sure, but at the potential expense of build quality and long term comfort. The B&Os are incredibly comfortable with great noise isolation.

I had the Penrose and have sent them back and ordered these. They were really uncomfortable for me after wearing for any more than about 45 mins. Great sound but not great if you can't wear them for long.

I picked up a few days ago should have posted my review. But you are spot on with the lack of bass etc still taking it to its paces to see if it’s worth it
lack of bass means it probably has better sound quality than people are used to. Too many people equate deep base with quality. There should be base when needed, but it shouldn't overwhelm the other frequencies.

Fantastic review, you apologized for making the review "long", but please don't, because this is the only review I've found so far that goes in-depth on a lot of the features that the headset has. I'm very interested in this headset, but at $500 I'd only be able to justify it if I can use it as my gaming, commuting, and work headphones, and this is the only review that actually answers that question. You mentioned that the headset doesn't get overly loud, but to give me a point of reference, what volume level do you settle in at when you play? 80%, 90%, 60%? I tend to like my volume a little bit higher than the average person, so knowing the threshold you're comfortable with would give me a good idea of if these will be loud enough. Thanks again for the review.
If B&O are reading this, I don't need to listed to podcasts on BT or anything, but if you could just allow the headphones to pass on text/call notifications that would be awesome!

Just got a pair for $250 brand new based on your recommendation.
They're quite good so far, but I don't think they're worth $500. At $250 they are pretty awesome though. The sound is great and they're exactly what I wanted, a do it all headset for my Xbox and PC/phone.

@@theopraxar7665 It‘s worth the 230€. But never the original 499€. The sound and the buildquality is great. One downside is that you can‘t use bluetooth while connected to the xbox. I really liked this feature on the XBOX wireless headset😊

Great review! But I'm wondering, will dolby atmos also work between other devices and the portal? It works with with the xbox series but my LG smart tv suports it to. So if I watch a movie on the netflix app on my TV that is shot with dolby atmos, will it work with the portal headphone to?

Brilliant review, and the only one I could find that confirms that you can use the USBC directly with the PlayStation 5 (I assume this also charges via their PS5). Sounds perfect, wireless with atmos on Xbox, and wired with PS5’s built in surround. Great stuff.
Just a heads up they are releasing a PlayStation variant too! If you don’t have an Xbox that may be a better option. Usb audio mode will still charge the headset at the same time btw. The new model comes out very soon. I hope to have one for testing soon.
@@GadgetryTech Thanks, yes I saw that this morning. I have both a PS5 and Xbox Series X (lucky me I know, I just wish I had the time to play them) but thinking this is the better of the headsets as it seems the PS5 version won’t work with Xbox (as Xbox doesn’t do usb audio connections by default) wherein the Xbox version will work wirelessly with Xbox and wired with PS5… unless I am mistaken.

@@danielmichaelgarcia thanks! They both have aux so in theory you can use either model on console with a wire no problem. The Xbox version gives you game to chat mix though whereas the PS version does not. So I think you are right that the Xbox version should be a better choice for you, plus it goes on sale once in a while now. I haven’t used the portals too much for quite some time due to covering other models lately. Thanks for the sub!

@@korcankarakoc no, they were quite tricky to get in Australia at the time. I went with the Nova Pro Wireless that were released a bit later.
Wife just got her headset yesterday. Super clean mid and high. No punch it's flat you right about that. To restrain we will see if I can juice these with some turning. But those foots steps come in clean.
Awesome Review! I got mine 2 days ago. It was a pain setting it up for Xbox game mode. The reason why is because Android's B&O app has yet to update it (I have a Note 10+). The iOS B&O app is ready to rock. You have gave me so much more information for PS5 with the DAC mode, which I didn't know. I used it only with the AUX cable to the controller. Thanks again and I ca'n't wait to see if you will have EQ settings in the future like you did with the Xbox Wireless Headset.
Man I thought I was going crazy. I have the Pixel 5 and I could not get Game Mode to work as well. I have been emailing B&O support for the last 2 days and they have yet to mention the app. As soon as I saw this video I noticed the BT and Xbox icon shown. @@JoshPotter yeah no worries. I was on reddit, youtube, and etc. I was going crazy when I first got them and saying to myself for $500 they sound so low and I can't get xbox game mode. I still have an old iphone 6s plus and got the game mode and makes a world of a difference plus with Dolby atmos app through xbox.
Go out to the B&O app on the Google Play Store. You can enroll in the Beta. I removed my Portal from my account within the app. Deleted my BlueTooth Connection and Factory Reset the Portal by holding down the power button once powered on for 8 seconds. This will cause a red led to flash. Once all has been removed and you have installed the beta version of the app. Go through the setup process again. It looks the same as it does on this video.
My husband's friend is having the same issue with the Android app on his Note 10+. Me on the other hand, I have a Z Fold 2 and B&O app is updated and I can control everything on the app for my headset.

Bought mines Day one. Best headset I’ve ever had sound wise which I expected but what I didn’t expect was the in game chat performance. They nailed these. Glad Microsoft is going hi end with all their peripherals

This is a good intro review of the headset. Your presentation is nice. I unboxed these on my channel yesterday and my video is plain compared to yours. My experience with the headset so far is average. The ANC could be better and the volume level could be higher. Nice review again. Thanks

Amazing review, thanks so much for all the detail! I am about to pull the trigger on the Beoplay Portal. I was wondering if you have tested the 3d audio feature when connecting to the PS5. Is the 3D audio effect comparable to the PS5 Pulse headphones or maybe even better? Asking because the Pulse headphones are marketed as being tuned for 3D but hoping that I won't miss out on 3D audio with the Portal. Many thanks in advance!!!
Thanks for the great review! A no-brainer at 200€ today here in Finland. Pretty good sale. Got the PC/Playstation version, that comes with 2 dongles, one for PC and one for Playstation. Didn't this Xbox version come with a PC dongle back in the day couple of years ago? Or does the Xbox dongle work with Windows directly?
there is no xbox dongle.... Its licensed to work directly with xbox ;)
I have to equalize it on the app and on Dolby Atmos to find the best settings strictly for gaming?

Great Review. I plan on getting them because i game on xbox and also want some good sound for my video editing. The only thing i was looking for and your not the only one not to review it. Was mic/voice monitoring when gaming. Its there according to the user guide. Its called "Own Voice". At least thats how it was described. Any feed back on that feature?

Great video looking forward to your next video on it in a more in depth review. Can you play and charge at the same time? I work from home. Have my console running all day with shows, videos, twitch, and party chat. so running the USBC to charge and play on box would be ideal. Ideally I can charge from a wall USB adapter to headset not through another device. +

Still trying to get my hands on a set and will release a review once I get one. For now I will say the Penrose gets high marks for Xbox gaming but falls short a bit in the app and stability department.

Great review - already pre ordered...my only concern is the volume level on Xbox - how is it working out now you’ve had more time with them?
It's definitely softer than it is on Bluetooth but still plenty loud in most cases. I would use the Atmos app to dial it up a couple notches if you need a little more punch. I try to avoid loud volumes for long periods of time and I find the stock max volume to still be more than adequate.
Ok an update. Bought the navy color after your review. Only 2 things: B&O updates in firmware to allow track skipping in touch controls, and to have a good B&O carry case like the HX for sale for those we would like to travel with the Portal.
Everything u said in this video basically confirms everything I’ve heard abt B&O. Those guys r absolutely no joke
