    Recently got hired to a smaller police department. Had to supply most everything. I was issued a new vest and uniforms but other than that I had to supply the rest. I'd love to get the FRAS for my vest. My dad was issued a 2nd chance vest when he became a cop in the early 80's. He got his survivor number in 1986

      @@freefieldtraining thank you. I hope that I dont ever get a survivor number like my father did. Was interesting to see my dad tear up when he say me on my first shift as a cop. He didnt want me to be a cop. But this is what iv wanted to do since I was young.

    Tommy, I don't think I've mentioned enough how valuable these armor videos are. There's a lot more to body armor than "it's rated for this, and it's NIJ certified". (Hell, if anything, I've been vocal about how I think the NIJ standards are less than stellar to say the least.) These videos aren't everything. But to see someone who actually gives lots of experienced input on armor like you do is a valuable part of the equation when it comes to selecting your own armor.

    When i first got into private security back in 2009 I went to a police supply store to get measured and fitted for a vest. Told them i wanted the best that money could buy lol. Ended spending $700 on a American body armor xtreme. Made out of dyneema. Had them sew an extra 5x8 pouch on the back of the two carriers and bought two t-15 titanium plates that were identical to the K-30 in your video. Back then the t-15 was $80. Funny how they are so cheap now! total bill was around $1000 😬

    Trauma inserts are not rated for any levels of ballistics, they arent just extra pieces of body armor. They are specifically used for absorbing the energy from a bullet. You usually put a small 5x8 speed plate or standalone plate in the very front of your vest, than you put the trauma plates behind the speed plate, and than your body armor. The thinking is that the trauma plate will absorb the back face damage from the first speed plate, and minimize damage.

      They don't cover very much by themselves. I guess because you can get two steel plates and a carrier for dirt cheap. Some people say such a rig is good to stuff under a desk for an emergency. Personally I'd consider a soft vest as the priority given that most gun crime is still handgun.

    There's something I'm very curious about that maybe you are as well and can answer. We both have the gear to do it, I can't imaging it hasn't crossed your mind that maybe it's worth it. I asked Safe Life Defense but didn't get a satisfactory answer. That is FRAS on FRAS, the FRAS 10x12 ICW a full FRAS vest.
    Safe Life gives a rating for FRAS on soft, and that sounds like something you do/recommend. But they don't say anything about FRAS on FRAS. I'm curious if FRAS on FRAS can reach a level IV equivalent and stop .308/30-06 AP and M855A1.
    I suspect you've questioned it yourself. Wear the soft vest and have handy or add the FRAS 10x12. The Safe Life IIIA+ is going to handle the vast majority of common threats. And the 10x12 FRAS ICW a IIIA+ will handle more capable rifle cartridges than FRAS alone at least in that area. Or wear just the full FRAS vest for the better coverage with more common rifle rounds. But what about FRAS on FRAS, or even hard plate with FRAS. Nobody that I've seen has talked about or tested anything ICW with FRAS.

    So for a patrol officer issued an outer carrier with a 6X8 and a 7X10 pocket in front of his level 2 soft armor....what should he get as sort of an upgraded k-30 with top bend to contour the chest?

    How much bigger in grith is the 2XL from the XL on Safelife defense 3A+ panels? The length of the vest is great. I order the XL even though their chart says large. I still have 1&1/2 gap on each side. Should I get the 2XL short or 3XL short?

    I would rather wear no plate than a steel plate. More likely to survive a sucking chest wound compared to taking spall from a steel plate to the jugular. Steel is only good for shooting at.

    FRAS How about bullet impact chest at an angle instead of straight on?
    How does angle impact at mid chest work?

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  2 роки тому

      Most rifle rounds within the spec at angles simply stop. Low power rifle rounds like 22 and all handgun rounds we have tried bounce off and fall to the ground a few feet away. Excellent question though, I like where your mind is at.

    I've thought of putting a skin stapler into my plate carriers IFAC and
    have seen no one else do it? So, is it a good idea, what are your
    thoughts?

    • @TheCivilWarriorProj
      @TheCivilWarriorProj 3 роки тому

      Let me preference by saying I'm not a certified medical technician anything. I have "advanced" basic trauma training from the military and fire department. Although a good idea, I would not recommend the skin stapler and here are my thoughts: If something is bleeding you need to pack it and apply pressure. If it's a minor bleeder just cover it and if possible apply pressure. Remember this is all pre hospital stop gaps. If someone enters the hospital with medical staples in them you are increasing treatment time because now someone needs to remove said staples. Another thing to consider is the legal ramification for using such device if you aren't certified to do so.
      Hope my 2 cents help you with your decision.

      If a farmer made a video about power equipment for farmers would landscapers complain that they were left out? Or do you think they would they understand that a farmer can only give his impression of such things from the perspective of a farmer. Would homeowners be upset if in that video the farmer doesn't recommend they go out and buy a john deere 5310 to mow their 1/4 acre yards? Some might... If you are a carpenter or plumber or stockbroker and like body armor great, and I support your right to do so, but that isn't the focus of my channel and I can't recommend you buy it for any specific purpose. So here. Is body armor for Joe blow: "Today on my opinion we are discussing body armor for Joe blow the dude who doesn't get shot at for a living but thinks body armor is cool or who has a dangerous job. I recommend getting armor that meets the realistic threat matrix for the area and environment you live and work in. If you don't have any specific threats you are concerned with them get whatever gets you hard and fits your budget."
