Lyrics:
You were there from the start/ taught me to be aware of the sharks & prepare for the dark/ you kept a secret you practiced what you were preaching against/ your inner demons were praying I would tear apart/ you won't admit but you competed just a little a bit/ I could tell cause you'd be heated over little sh*t/ telling me to quit trying & get real/ I got a little shine you was like big deal/ I was pursuing dreams, steady doin my thing/ you wasn't doing the same you wasn't doing a thing/ from my truest to a brutes to a judas/ to who knew that this would happen/ but the fraction was brewing it seems/ I should have seen, mistaking smoke for a little steam/ it turned to fire you burned me hoping to ruin me/ I won't even mention your name in the bars, it's too close to the scars/ but I'm sure n*gga you know who you are/
Chorus
You Know Who You Are
You were there from the start/ you told me what ever I'm doing to do it from the heart/ I was pursuing a dream that was cloaked in the cloth of the uncertain/ making money music & art/ and it wasn't perfect/ you told me what ever's worth it is worth hurting/ double edge seemingly sharp, rather unnerving/ but still, you believed in a brother/ I was starving as an artist, you was feeding a brother/ you could see in a brother what I couldn't see myself/ when couldn't see myself needing help/ one reason or another I was trying to do it all/ there's allot of ways to fail but that's the fastest to the fall/ but through it and after all you was with me not against/ you cheered me from the bench/ and now you're with me as I ball/ and that meant, I ain't got to mention your name in bars/ you know you're close to my heart/ so I'm sure that/
Chorus
You were there from the start/ before you were even aware of a plan you part/ of the scheme, grand as it could seem at the top/ man can only go so high before you reached where we can't breath/ but you know your limitations you walk patient/ while everybody starts to run for their plan B/ like a fire escape, but you stay in the kitchen/ let them sleep on their dreams, you just lying awake/ you stay eyeing the cake, they getting greedy/ and then they turn their side against you like their getting sleepy/ try to prevent you cause you ain't too what they bout/ get in your mental convince you to take the way out/ please, let them try, let the me fail/ let them tell lies on you let them be/ let them see you prevail/ let them bail on their attempt to stunt a star/ in any event be sure that you know who you are.
Honestly, this shit is a fucking masterpiece. I don’t throw that around loosely either. This is a fucking masterpiece bro.
I am Amir’s mother and still to this day you never told me the person you were talking about in this song ,but it was a beautiful song.
I met your son at a concert in Detroit,Mi. He was a pleasure to meet. Thank You Ma'am for raising such a talented and respectful son. 🙏
Your son is a humble man leading artists on the right path in a dark world. I had the privilege to meet him in Nashville, and his presence was genuine. He shook my hand and asked how I was doing and somehow it was real. He has helped me and so many others get through some very tough times through his music, which is ultimately through you, Mrs. Mohamed. So I want to say thank you for raising such a man, you indirectly improved so many people’s lives.
This is my favorite song! I met him last November and told him how much it means to me and he signed my record. Then he performed it and pointed at me! I’ll never forget it.
I feel the song is about 3 perspectives. The first is about someone you come up with and think has your back but ultimately gets bitter and jealous once you once you get success. Like they weren’t real friends. Second verse is about those friends who cheer from the bench. And that could be anyone rooting for you near and far. People that let you crash in their couch. Believed in your dreams. Didn’t give up on you. Third verse is directed at us, the listener or the singer himself. Reminding you of how far you have come and don’t stop being you. Don’t let anyone take away who you are and what matters to you. You know who you are. 💜
@@djoldboy4407excellent breakdown. Well said 💚👊🐮
I met Oddissee once at a union Market in DC and we talked about Foodie stuff since I’m a chef and sharpen knives . Cat was real down to earth and I’ve been a fan since day one . I think he’s the greatest MC in DC history and I know he’s from Largo but he’s that talented . Diamond District for Life ! Have all the LPs and I have high standards listening to Donuts from Jay Dee in Nicaragua while coming down a mountain on a downhill bike after 5 expresso shots from Selva Negra area 😅
i can't remember how i found Oddisee, but im glad i did
+Paper bless
I was listenin to Kendrick Lamar's old mixtape then this one song popped up. "Wanna be heard" the instrumental was dope af so i looked it up. Then it said it was from Black Milk " Popular Demand" i listened to that song and then different songs that were related or similar popped up one after another eventually i found ODDISEE. I realized then that J.Cole and Kendrick weren't the only ones with good hip hop this generation.
Love & Respects
young soul forces brought me here. 4 oddisee's!
Same this Dude SICK
oddisee defines underrated and has been for awhile
+Hamuera Anaru he remind me of a guy i used to deal with that was also an under ground artist lol crazy shit
I don't doubt you for a second Huni Brown what goes underated goes underground.. But they will get theirs one day
He is underrated but..he is huge u underground and doing well probably getting paid better then mainstream..he started this many times
Totally forget about this version..8 years later still gives me goosebumps..
Oddisee is a beast. Man deserves so much more recognition.
I always love when rappers do acoustic shit. Not many people can pull it off and I don't think that it should happen too often but every time I hear it happen it's some magic.
William Lodge quality over quantity
Atmosphere - Guarantees
The acoustic version was great. Smooth like butter: ua-cam.com/video/EdoZMurKQJA/v-deo.html
i listen to this every day
No words can really describe how much i respect artists such as these guys.
Thank you.
Fuck is wrong with this bitch? on your period ? lol gtfoh
Really soulful shit right here!
Oddisee is one of the best live performers I've seen. I saw him opening up for KRS-One and Public Enemy and those are two of my favorites but I spent most of my camera space on him and I don't regret it. He's engaging and charismatic on stage, thats all you need, you don't need million dollar effects etc.
FUCKING TRUTH !
*****
Delyric Oracle, I have to agree. I have been a fan since the foot in the door mixtape, finally got to see him live in Chicago... was thoroughly impressed by his stage presence. Dude was just having a good time on stage and his joy spread throughout the venue. Much respect to Oddisee!
That's nice to hear. Quality over everything else
What an honor for Oddisee to open for hip hop royalty like that. That’s how you know you’ve made it. Fuck the awards and record sales. Society is too dumbed down to recognize real music like this. And the powers that be make sure music like this doesn’t reach the masses. It’s too encouraging and soul reaching.
Cant believe this dropped 7 years ago. Major nostalgia right now
Those rhyme patterns on first verse damn. Such perfection.
I'm very passionate and descriptive with my words. I've never had issue explaining something or voicing my opinion on it. But no simple sentence or even article can give justice to this song.
This is Art.
This is beauty.
This song connects with me on a spiritual level. Ive listened to it repeatedly for about 2 years now since I heard it. And it still invokes a deep, profound emotion within me that i cant even place a label to.
Please continue to make music for yourself, with love. Because that's the only way music will ever retain its own soul.
Thank you.
one word to describe this: fire
Without a doubt 🔥
Oddisee needs to get more love, this is a gem in a world of glass shards.
Who are these 40 haters that dislike this? Lil B fans? This is real HIP HOP and ART.
Chords: Cmaj7, Am7, Em7, Bm7, Em7, Bm7
+The JMR Experience gotta love the 7th chords
+The JMR Experience THANK YOU
THANK YOU
word
Yea those chords are pretty spot on, nice one yo. But I found it sounds better if you kinda play it the way this dude here is. Lay your first finger over the entire 2nd fret, middle finger on the B chord 3rd fret, ring and pinky fingers on the 4th fret on D and G chords. Keep that hand formation, move your 1st finger over the entire 4th fret for the 2nd chord. Next chord is same, 1st finger over entire 6th fret with the other 3 in the original positions. Last chord is played on the entire 6th fret alone with your 1st finger only
If this doesn't touch your soul...I'm sorry
Glad to hear that real lyricism is still alive. This is a great version of this song.
ThunderLips what's the other version?
Dope! This is how you help hip hop expand in a healthy manner. Respect!
Odisee... we feel you bro, so deep and damn talented lyricist. Big respect from Chile
Truly a diamond in the rough admist this empty mainstream hiphop nonsense. Oddisee is the truth and listening to this album as well as travelliing man just opens your mind to the undeniable fact that soul and hiphop are not truly dead. Mad respect for the brotha, Can i get an AMEN?
Poetry need only strings of a instrument and vocal cords to make it beautiful.
OpenTheory fuk u
true
This song takes me back to the first time i heard it almost a decade ago... Oddisee heavily underrated
I need THIS VERSION on Spotify!! The live version doesn't cut it!! 🔥🔥🔥
This dude is the truth.......from day one!!!!
This is the version that should've been on the album. The album version is all over the place but this is just on point.
This is incredible. i wish oddisee would produce a full length olivier album. i know they released an ep together but a full length would be fucking awesome. olivier works so well over oddisee's soulful production.
Odd is so slept on
I thought i heard quite some music by Oddisee but just found this...just confirming what a huge amount of righteous music this man has made!
listened to this everyday since it was released, saw the views go up in the thousands each day! this should be getting millions, instead the polluted UK charts choose that rihanna singing how she wants to men inside of her should be number one. pisses me off
I listen to this five times a day
Unbelievably authentic and heartfelt. Thirst quenching music.
This one of my favorite songs I remember stumbling on this song years ago and it’s just one of those songs that’s been imprinted in my memory every since. Timeless
This will always be my favourite live of any track
Real hip hop! Rhythm and Poetry at its finest! Glad I found this artist.
Yes yea yes yes. Soul music. Where have you been!
if only there was good music like this to put on youtube videos for personal content this is perfection
Again thank God autoplay on you tube this is real hip hop no gimmicks and I can relate to this
Saw this guy two days ago at Dour Festival in Belgium, he's an inspiration. Great personality, great flow, great vibes, and his live band is amazing. Best show I've seen in a while, I strongly recommend it!
As a rapper and a producer this man here is actually unreal! Love from England bro!
Probably one of my ALLTIME FAVS.. And it seems so simple.. no complex riffs, prolly only 3 or 4 chords on the guitar
One voice with just one guitar - why are the finer things in life always just so simple!?
love from Africa
I will forever love this song
Really, truly, vibin' on this one in a profound way.
This song gave me chills, great song.
This is criminally underrated.
His flow is awesome
I love the texture and depth of these lyrics, they’re what bring me back to listen to this so many times ❤️
storytelling makes for the best hip hop.
this is so beautiful. I really don't know much about hip hop but this is amazing.
Double snaps and a bow... Classic.
Why is this not on blast throughout the nation

Doesnt get any better.
Tune of the day...
Ive played this about 20 times in a row and the more i listen the doper it gets i prefer to this the version with the beat . His rhymes come out clearer and more powerful . I make music myself and its really refreshing hearing this joint. I love his diction and phrasing pure talent and dopeness. singer kills it on the guitar as well
One love.
that was Amazing, Soulful and Beautiful
Dopest rapper ever! Even better in concert!
I’m so glad I remembered this song. I was humming the intro and remembered his name, thank goodness.

One of the best acoustics I've ever heard in my life.
Awesome.
Wow, I was just reminded of the singer Case for a second. Lovely singer Olivier Daysoul :)
Good music
I consider myself a huge hip hop fan and have been expanding my knowledge of the art daily over many years, but only today i found about Oddisee. Ive been listening to your tracks all day, wow have ive been missing out for years. Massive respect and much love from the UK man. Peace
THIS IS THE FUTURE!.. keep doing you. We'll keep listening.
this needs to be put in rotation.
NOW
Come to Orlando, FL
This is why i listen to oddisee all-day-long
This is my Soul Medicine. 🙌🙌🙌
Most of mc’s should take your example. Very rare today for have some acoustic songs. That’s so beautiful. Sad that this acoustic version is not on your LP.
beautiful song and guitar
no matter how many times i listen to this song it never gets old, a true sign of genuine talent.
still listening in 2021!
such a talented artist
They compliment eachother do much on this track it wouldn't be the same without that acoustic
really really dope, fresh, ill, raw, nice, legit, on point!
Grown man hip hop
theherbpuffer You are paying for this new phone screen, right? Fucking dipstick bitch.
Jack Miller 😂😂
the true test of hip hop is a stripped down acoustic version - brilliant.
i love the whole song, but man that second verse. imagine having that big of an effect on someone that they wrote that verse. that has to be the most fulfilling feeling.
Great things like this are happening.
I keep coming across great hip hop man, it never left, the people left real hip hop. Shout out to Oddisee for keeping it real, Phora, Portrey Youth, Logic, Pro Era, Clear Soul, it goes on and on but I'm happy there's still artists out there staying true, one.
Guys, Thank YOU SO MUCH for coming to Bulgaria and transferring all the love and energy you have! It was one of the best things I've experienced lately! I need your music! Thank you! Keep on!
Still bopping to this today 🔥
Od and the whole Mello Music Group are underrated
2021 anyone? Had to revisit this gem. Used to listen to this as kid I’m 18 now.
I am not listening music like this, but Oddisee , this guy knows what music need to create :)
he is real..
talkin' facts!
this man oddisee. my man be making good music.
You were there from the start
Taught me to be aware of the sharks and prepare for the dark
You kept a secret you practiced what you were preaching against
Your inner demons were praying I'd tear apart
You won't admit but you competed just a little bit
I could tell, you'd be heated over little shit
Telling me to quit trying and get real
I got a little shine you was like big deal
I was pursuing dreams, steady doing my thing
You wasn't doing the same, you wasn't doing a thing
From my truest to a Brutus to a Judas
To who knew that this could happen
But the fracture was brewing it seems
I should have seen, mistaking smoke for a little steam
It turned to fire you burned me, trying to ruin me
I won't even mention your name in my bars
It's too close to the scars, but I'm sure that
[Hook: Oddisee]
You know who you are
You know who you are
I ain't gotta name names
You know who you are
I ain't gotta name names
You know who you are
I ain't gotta name names
You know who you are
You know who you are
Oliver has such a smooth and beautiful voice
