    We are bringing home our first ball python hatchling this weekend and I’ve been going back and watching all your care videos. Thank you for so much knowledge! We are going tomorrow to get all of our tub items and get it set up so it’s ready. We actually weren’t planning to get one until we could afford a bigger tank and the more I watch you the more I realize it’s pointless to invest in a big tank until they are much bigger and well established. My daughter is so excited.

    I don’t have the money or space for a snake right now. Until I am able to get one, I am planning and researching consistently. I have made multiple Google docs about the husbandry for the species I want (Plains Hognose), a printout for recording both feedings and cleanings, a printout to record temperature checks, a full instruction page for if someone else would need to care for my snake (obviously it’s just general, and I’d make changes as needed after actually getting the snake), etc. I plan on having all of my equipment at home, set up, and tested for at least a week before bringing home the snake. Probably will have replacements of different (most likely the essentials) pieces of equipment to be prepared for any potential issues. I want to be as thorough and educated as I can be, since I have to wait anyway.

    It also helps to block off three of the four sides of the enclosure (everything but the front) so they don't feel as open to the rest of the room. Sometimes I even block half of the front so my snake can decide if he wants to stay hidden or be able to explore and look out (he's actually more likely to want to do that because he has an abnormally outgoing, confident and curious personality!)

    Love the water bowl section of this video! ❤ smartest and most knowledgeable information that everyone says other wise, they always say to get one big enough for them to soak and after having my white wedding ball python for over 6 years now, i noticed she doesnt ever soak but as she got bigger, i got a bigger water dish to accommodate that myth and i ran into the problem of cages not being big enough to house a large water bowl comfortably in my bioactive setup! I was thinking to myself, does she really need one this big? So i began a search and finally came across this and it confirmed my thoughts! Thank you for making this video!!

    🐍Reptile zookeeper here: I would encourage providing much more space and using at least 2 hides for security, as well as (as you mentioned) filling the enclosure with lots of fake plants as needed (rocks, sticks (safely pest-treated of course)) to give that sense of security, but also the option to move and explore. Males especially really appreciate being able to climb, as that's part of the process of searching for a mate in the wild. I'm not comfortable with restricting movement and the ability for the animal to at least choose where they want to be. I think they should be able to lift their head up at least 15", as they would do this naturally to "scout ". It's really important not to assume what animals like, and instead go off of their behavior when given choices. Some snakes are shy and do hide more, but even they will pace and explore at times and need to be able to have that exercise to maintain a healthy body condition. We also know now (see Dav Kaufman's Ball Pythons In The Wild movie) that Ball Pythons do move around a lot and don't stay underground in termite mounds all day, and come out to find water, hunt and find mates. Some even climb trees. The more you give your animals, the more they will exhibit "new" behaviors. 🙂

    Every breeder I see uses mats for heating on plastic tubs but instructions on the mats says not to use on plastic. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just trying to research since I’m thinking of breeding and going on plastic tubs myself.
    Thank you in advance and really appreciate your videos!

    • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  Рік тому +2

      The standard way that breeders keep ball pythons is in racks with plastic tubs and heat tape which is basically a heat mat that goes all through the rack. Thousands of snakes are kept this way. Generally when you buy a heat mat it does say not to use it with plastic but that's the way we heat tubs. Overhead heat doesn't work with a standard tub so you have to use heat from underneath. An unregulated heat mat will melt a tub and also kill your snake. Regardless of the type of enclosure, you have to use a thermostat. A heat mat that's regulated with a thermostat will not get nearly high enough to melt plastic - It's just warming the surface to around 90°.

    • @JayJitz
      @JayJitz Рік тому +1

      @@GreenRoomPythons but doesn’t the thermometer only read above the plastic? How do you regulate the tub itself where the snake goes? Also, do you suggest a certain brand of tubs to use?

      Hey Joseph, yes thermostats are a must for any heating element. I see badly burned snakes posted in different groups all the time because a heat mat wasn't on a thermostat. Those elements are just not good at keeping a steady heat and they can shoot up at any time... All my enclosures are at different settings. You have to experiment with what temp to set it at in order to get a heat gun reading of 90 on the tub surface.

Quick question, my cool side stays around 77 degrees ambient temperature. When the winter months come and even right now I want to raise the ambient temperature in my tub! Any tips? • @GreenRoomPythons
      @GreenRoomPythons  Рік тому +1

      It's going to depend on the snake but in general if you put a small snake in a large enclosure they'll do fine as long as there is plenty of clutter and places to hide. If they don't eat for you that's a good sign they need a smaller enclosure until they become more confident. Aspen is good if you live in a tropical climate. For most people living in areas that don't have super high humidity, Aspen is too dry.
