Future Bob 🤣 I never would've noticed you said something weird until Future Bob showed up and started poking fun! This is great information! One thing I would add in relation to the lifespan of the snake: if you ever move, be prepared to do all of this prep work over again. When I first got my ball python I lived in a big city and had tons of resources: three exotic animal veterinarians within 10 miles of my house, several pet supply stores, and a bunch of neighbors who loved and kept reptiles as well. Then I moved to a much smaller town and the only local pet store didn't cater to reptiles of any kind, the closest exotic vet was 2 cities over and about an hour away, and everyone here was afraid of my babies and wouldn't even come inside my house. We eventually figured it all out, but the 2nd go around at prepping my animals for a new life was actually much harder than the first...
Got my first snake (banana super blackhead) 3 weeks ago, and my snake hasn't eaten, and it stressed me out so so much. I've tried frozen rat pups, normal rat pup and that didnt work. Today I tried using mice shavings with the rat pup and my snake finally ate its first meal since he's been with me! I was so happy that he finally ate. Now I can sleep peacefully
I'm a brand new ball python mom, got him yesterday!!! Been researching for about 6mos prior to getting him. Your videos have been incredibly helpful!! Seen most at least twice. Thank you so much for your assitance in this process.
About a month ago, I got my first BP, a firefly morph. I've done my research and your channel has proven to be instrumental. You provide an honest, educational, and personal approach. Well done!
I guess it's part of the research, so you didn't really leave it out, but prepare for the quarantine period. Make a plan for where you'll have your snake during that time that might be different from it's more permanent location in the house. I think the initial quarantine period is an easy one to not be super aware of. And my upcoming snake will be a rosy boa! It'll be at least a couple months before I am ready, but I'm super excited!
I’m glad you mentioned fumes or smoke not being good for a snake. I have a new ball python and his enclosure is out of a high traffic area but very near the place where I make stained glass pieces. The soldering produces quite a lot of smoke. Im going to have to possibly move the enclosure on soldering days or solder in another room or look into some type of air vacuum/filtering or something. Glad you brought the point up though.

Man I'm so freaking glad I found your youtube channel. It's not the only one I've been watching, but it's definitely the main one! Every time I doubt myself with my new banana pied BP, I watch a vid or a few from you or any other decent snake keeper, and am immediately reminded that I'm doing basically everything right. Some of the ways I see snakes being kept, treated and anthropomorphised concerns me so much!! Sorry to use one of your vids as a springboard to ask this random question, but I'm really tring to find out. There's a vid on YT of a ball python gaping its mouth open and tensing its body to fart. Like, fart aggressively. The mouth is so open, it looks like he must be swallowing air and then forcing it out through his vent. Mine hasn't done anything like that, but if it ever happens, I need to know... is that, like, a normal, okay thing for them to be doing? Or does it mean they're in some kind of distress? I'm concerned about the vid in question because I remember you mentioning that BPs don't really like having their mouths open unless they're feeding or there's a problem. If you know the video I'm talking about, would you be able to shed any light on it for me please?

Glad you mentioned the smoke. I smoke, and will be keeping my snake in the bedroom with the door shut so they are not exposed to my habin. (smoking not permitted in the bedroom - thats how fires start).
I do too, although I want to quit so I can one day have them out more in my living room. Their room is in a bedroom next to the living room, I keep it closed unless I can open all my windows on the good days in the midwest. I also have an air purifier running 24/7 next to their door going in, just to take some out but I will probably move it in there eventually. JS ❤

I have a very fat lazy cat I rescued lol although she's not even one to mouse, I have a children's safety gate in the doorway to the room where my snakes are. And when I sleep or go anywhere I shut that door just to be on the safe side. You never know, so I don't give her the opportunity to go in. ❤

For some strange reason I seam to be watching your videos from new to old it doesn't really bother me because you are providing myself and other with a wealth of knowledge. When I have done enough research and feel confident enough I intend to get a royal python. I had a quick look through the comments but I don't think i saw pet insurance for the unfortunate visits the the vet that you might not of expected
I am planning on finally getting my BP by the end of this month. I have the enclosure set up and heated. I am still deciding on the morph but breeders who advertise baby BP that have been handled and are on FT diet will get my business.

hi i hope you remember my comment about getting a tub for my ball python well i did as you suggested and at first my snake wouldnt eat after i put him in the tub so 20 days later he finally ate in his tub so i think he is now used to it so i wanted to thank you for the good advice .

I know this is an older video so I hope this comment finds you, I'm sure you've been asked this before but my question is, Inspectors bioactive enclosure behind you, is he fully grown? Is that the biggest enclosure he will ever need and what size/dimensions is it? I currently have a 40gal front open zoo med enclosure and have been doing research on whether it's suitable for a BP at all?

No need to remove them to feed, and it actually could stress them out and cause them to regurgitate. It's always best to feed them in their own enclosure. Congrats on your new snake!
i'm getting my first ball python this Christmas and have done a ton of research, I just wanted to ask if an air humidifier in the same room/house as the snake would be dangerous due to their respiratory sensitivities.
@Miss Grimm I came across female version of Kent. I was at a pet store when about middle-aged woman walks in with a dang literal "fish bowl" full of water and wanted to buy a gold fish. The staff member got suspicious and asked if she has aquarium and tech in place waiting and she just lifted up the round little bowl and said something about the bowl being it.
@@missgrimm5574 Well the staff member tried to tell her what she needs to keep a fish alive and refused to sell one. And it's the only pet store that sell fish in our city so she couldn't just walk up to a next one.
How long do people need to research prior? See people doing so for like a year and I don't know what else I could possibly learn that would take that long that isnt experience related. Am I missing out on something?
How does one catproof an enclosure? Is there a specific way the cover the top that a determined cat can't get through? I don't think my cats will bother my snake as I have two rats that have been part of my household for about a year and half now and they get curious when I have them out of the cage, but they get freaked out by them when they get close and leave the room(it's kinda funny since it's not a dramatic freak out, just a look of confusion and a "I'm out" behavior). And they don't bother them at all when they're in their cage. Koda hops on top if I move the cage to a new location until I tell him no a couple times, though, so I can see him being curious(he gets into all the cabinets and gives me attitude about my closet being closed sometimes).
I've never had to cat proof an enclosure, but if I had cats I would probably stay away from screen tops. I'd either just use PVC enclosures or modify the screen lid somehow. I believe there are PVC replacement lids for Exo-Terra enclosures.
@@GreenRoomPythons I'll have to look into that option. I'll have time before I move to a terrarium enclosure, so I can take my time to make sure I get what's best. Do the PVC enclosures come with an option to be able to lock the doors?
It depends on how smart your cat is, but really a secure lid with clips or locks should be enough. Don't have my snake yet, but I have a hamster in a 40 gal tank with a metal mesh lid. Never once has my cat gone in or tried to get in. But she does like to lay on top of the enclosure. So just be sure the lid is sturdy enough to withstand that.
I have a small question I wanted to get young BP but I also thought to get a 30 or 40 gal tank but pack it full so it seems small but lots of places to hide...my question is it wrong for me to do that...or should I just get the 20gal?
That should work fine. If the snake seems to not be doing well in there, you could always get them a little tub for their first few months, but usually a larger cluttered enclosure works fine.
Pastel ball python or maybe a vanilla. Quick question. I have a pvc sliding front door enclosure. It has slits on the side for air I assume but it also has a screen top. I just bought a clear plastic sheet to screw onto the top of the enclosure to keep the cat out. But I’m worried about not giving enough air but I don’t want too much humidity to get out either. Should I drill some holes to keep some of that ventilation?
i’m thinking about getting a BP in a couple months so i’m doing tons of research, but it would be my first snake which I’ve saw isn’t really recommended for a first snake, however I wouldn’t want another snake for 20+ years first just to get a BP lol, what should I do?
I think a ball python is a great 1st snake especially for someone who is doing research ahead of time. They are pretty easy as long as you know what you're doing :-)
Hi! Sorry I know this is a little off topic,, but I currently have a male BP, and I am looking to get a female. I do not want to breed them, but my question is, can they have their enclosures close together without issues? Will they smell each other and stress each other out/want to mate? Thanks!
Once they're of breeding age, there could be a pheromone issue if they're really close together, but it's not a big deal. Your male could get a little testy and they're could be some food refusals from either one - but that can happen without pheromones

Question..when it comes to early signs of ri..is it possible to make changes in husbandry to help get rid of the ri without a visit to the vet? Or is a vet visit an absolute must?
Some people have good luck with bumping temps a few degrees to knock it out if it's the VERY early signs. But my advice (because RI can be very serious) is always to see a vet.
@@GreenRoomPythons what wood be considered "very early signs" and signs that are to far along to be considered "early" signs? Vet bills arent something everyone can afford especially with the economy n the way its trying to recover from covid.
@@nemolank I'd say if you're hearing an occasional wheezing but they aren't opening their mouths (other than an occasional yawn) and mucus isn't coming out of their nose - you don't see mucus on the glass if they're in a glass enclosure... Yeah, vet bills aren't fun. I get it :-)

Please dont listen to kent. You need to properly cycle a tank before adding fish otherwise you will encounter an ammonia spike and they can all die off. Do your research, even on fish 😂
You forgot the nitrogen cycle for fish. I get its a joke section of the video but as someone who’s educating people on animals i would put a disclaimer that if they do that theyre killing whatever fish they get.

For some strange reason I seam to be watching your videos from new to old it doesn't really bother me because you are providing myself and other with a wealth of knowledge. When I have done enough research and feel confident enough I intend to get a royal python. I had a quick look through the comments but I don't think i saw pet insurance for the unfortunate visits the the vet that you might not of expected
I don't know anything about pet insurance. Not sure there are any that would cover reptiles, but let me know if you know of one
I am planning on finally getting my BP by the end of this month. I have the enclosure set up and heated. I am still deciding on the morph but breeders who advertise baby BP that have been handled and are on FT diet will get my business.

If you're on morphmarket you definitely need to make sure they're feeding FT because it seems like a lot of breeders are feeding live these days

hi i hope you remember my comment about getting a tub for my ball python well i did as you suggested and at first my snake wouldnt eat after i put him in the tub so 20 days later he finally ate in his tub so i think he is now used to it so i wanted to thank you for the good advice .

I know this is an older video so I hope this comment finds you, I'm sure you've been asked this before but my question is, Inspectors bioactive enclosure behind you, is he fully grown? Is that the biggest enclosure he will ever need and what size/dimensions is it? I currently have a 40gal front open zoo med enclosure and have been doing research on whether it's suitable for a BP at all?

No need to remove them to feed, and it actually could stress them out and cause them to regurgitate. It's always best to feed them in their own enclosure. Congrats on your new snake!

Just mix water into your substrate and you'll be fine. Set up everything before picking up the snake

i'm getting my first ball python this Christmas and have done a ton of research, I just wanted to ask if an air humidifier in the same room/house as the snake would be dangerous due to their respiratory sensitivities.
A humidifier in the room is just fine. They just cause a problem in the enclosure.

@Miss Grimm I came across female version of Kent. I was at a pet store when about middle-aged woman walks in with a dang literal "fish bowl" full of water and wanted to buy a gold fish.
The staff member got suspicious and asked if she has aquarium and tech in place waiting and she just lifted up the round little bowl and said something about the bowl being it.

When you are bringing a ball python home should you cover parts of the enclosure to reduce stress from the envoronment?
Yep that's helpful, especially if you have them in a glass enclosure.

How long do people need to research prior? See people doing so for like a year and I don't know what else I could possibly learn that would take that long that isnt experience related. Am I missing out on something?
How does one catproof an enclosure? Is there a specific way the cover the top that a determined cat can't get through? I don't think my cats will bother my snake as I have two rats that have been part of my household for about a year and half now and they get curious when I have them out of the cage, but they get freaked out by them when they get close and leave the room(it's kinda funny since it's not a dramatic freak out, just a look of confusion and a "I'm out" behavior). And they don't bother them at all when they're in their cage. Koda hops on top if I move the cage to a new location until I tell him no a couple times, though, so I can see him being curious(he gets into all the cabinets and gives me attitude about my closet being closed sometimes).
I've never had to cat proof an enclosure, but if I had cats I would probably stay away from screen tops. I'd either just use PVC enclosures or modify the screen lid somehow. I believe there are PVC replacement lids for Exo-Terra enclosures.
@@GreenRoomPythons I'll have to look into that option. I'll have time before I move to a terrarium enclosure, so I can take my time to make sure I get what's best. Do the PVC enclosures come with an option to be able to lock the doors?

It depends on how smart your cat is, but really a secure lid with clips or locks should be enough. Don't have my snake yet, but I have a hamster in a 40 gal tank with a metal mesh lid. Never once has my cat gone in or tried to get in. But she does like to lay on top of the enclosure. So just be sure the lid is sturdy enough to withstand that.
I have a small question I wanted to get young BP but I also thought to get a 30 or 40 gal tank but pack it full so it seems small but lots of places to hide...my question is it wrong for me to do that...or should I just get the 20gal?
That should work fine. If the snake seems to not be doing well in there, you could always get them a little tub for their first few months, but usually a larger cluttered enclosure works fine.

Pastel ball python or maybe a vanilla. Quick question. I have a pvc sliding front door enclosure. It has slits on the side for air I assume but it also has a screen top. I just bought a clear plastic sheet to screw onto the top of the enclosure to keep the cat out. But I’m worried about not giving enough air but I don’t want too much humidity to get out either. Should I drill some holes to keep some of that ventilation?
Sounds like a nice enclosure! A few slits on the side will provide plenty of air for your snake. No need to drill holes ;-)

i’m thinking about getting a BP in a couple months so i’m doing tons of research, but it would be my first snake which I’ve saw isn’t really recommended for a first snake, however I wouldn’t want another snake for 20+ years first just to get a BP lol, what should I do?
I think a ball python is a great 1st snake especially for someone who is doing research ahead of time. They are pretty easy as long as you know what you're doing :-)

Hi! Sorry I know this is a little off topic,, but I currently have a male BP, and I am looking to get a female. I do not want to breed them, but my question is, can they have their enclosures close together without issues? Will they smell each other and stress each other out/want to mate? Thanks!
Once they're of breeding age, there could be a pheromone issue if they're really close together, but it's not a big deal. Your male could get a little testy and they're could be some food refusals from either one - but that can happen without pheromones

Question..when it comes to early signs of ri..is it possible to make changes in husbandry to help get rid of the ri without a visit to the vet? Or is a vet visit an absolute must?
Some people have good luck with bumping temps a few degrees to knock it out if it's the VERY early signs. But my advice (because RI can be very serious) is always to see a vet.
@@GreenRoomPythons what wood be considered "very early signs" and signs that are to far along to be considered "early" signs? Vet bills arent something everyone can afford especially with the economy n the way its trying to recover from covid.
@@nemolank I'd say if you're hearing an occasional wheezing but they aren't opening their mouths (other than an occasional yawn) and mucus isn't coming out of their nose - you don't see mucus on the glass if they're in a glass enclosure... Yeah, vet bills aren't fun. I get it :-)

Please dont listen to kent. You need to properly cycle a tank before adding fish otherwise you will encounter an ammonia spike and they can all die off. Do your research, even on fish 😂
You forgot the nitrogen cycle for fish. I get its a joke section of the video but as someone who’s educating people on animals i would put a disclaimer that if they do that theyre killing whatever fish they get.
