  • Today it was time to adjust and repair the odometer in our Volvo 850. The old reading was almost exactly 100000km off and so we took the cluster apart and removed the odometer to adjust the reading. A pretty tedious but rewarding task!

    - Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.

I had to change my T5R from 80,000 miles to 118,000. I used a paper clip so I could change all at once. As you slide the rod out, slide the paper clip right behind it until the paper clip is all the way through. The paper clip is flexible enough to spin the numbers while holding onto the blue gears. When correct, slide out the paper clip as you’re pushing in the rod.

I have already bought a gear for the instrument panel years ago, but I still haven't changed it, even though there are many good instructional videos on UA-cam on how to do the job

Nice Video! I did this on my own 850, and of course the gear got loose. In the end i got all of them loose and cut off the plastic strip in front to get better access. Then it was relatively easy to fit them back.

6:00 I did just over 6000km like that on mine. Didn't want to risk the gears falling into the housing. 😂

Nice ! I think gear was already replaced by someone, bronze gear isn't factory. You can also improve cluster even more - install trip computer. It, I think, requires only computer, plug in wiring and one button :D also if you didn't, you can replace warning light bulbs, they are should blue from factory, and available from Osram(2721MFX)

Yeah that bronze gear made us even more suspicious and that it has been tempered with in the past.
And thanks for suggesting those upgrades! We might replace the cluster entirely for a higher tier one in the future😊

Your car's meter has stopped. It's pretty close to the same reading as mine, in my time it stopped at 413,000 km
