    This programme (‘Out of Town’) was wonderful.
    A perfect depiction of gentler times, some would say of more intelligent, certainly more worldly-wise folk
    And JACK Hargreaves truly knew the ways of the countryside.
    Watching all of the rescued episodes right now on Talking Pictures TV👍🇬🇧
    Have saved this episode here.
    This here collie owner loves it

    I was a nipper in the 70's and used to love this program. Between Jack Hargreaves, Sir David Attenborough, Percy Thrower and David Bellamy, they showed me that I was a born environmentalist, nature and animal lover.
    I still refer to Old Jack's wisdom, and I always learn something new.
    Even though when I was 7 years old when this programme aired and I thought he was Colonel Sander's twin brother ( lol!), I would watch it avidly, with the other program "The Old Country". Every time I hear a manoldin, I think of Old Jack Hargreaves and smile.
    Thank you for keeping his work going.
    He was and still is a little know National Treasure.
    When I have walked the Wilds of Wiltshire I feel the connection of the old droves and tracks Old Jack and Blue travelled with the dogs and I am blessed to have lived and known of his work :)

      Although I'm not gardener I can listen to Harry Dodson of the The Victorian Kitchen Garden all day as well.
      We are blessed with quite staggering history in the UK, I love old droveways & trackways in Wiltshire, too. An old trick I heard to find the approximate age of a track is to count the number of bush species making up the hedge and multiply by 100.

    I grew up with dogs on a farm. At one time my parents had 43 dogs. They were mainly English Springer spaniels like the liver and white one that Jack has sitting with him and my parents showed them as well as worked with them in the field which even then was quite rare as most show dogs never work. They had two dual champions who were not only show dogs but also had passed stringent tests of their hunting and retrieving ability.
    My parents also had a Labrador (like the black one Jack had with him) that did work, Border Collie sheep dogs which my father worked and trained and then sold, a Wolfhound and an English Pointer as well as a Beagle. What Jack said is entirely true. I have never owned a dog as a an adult because I lived in London and other places and knew I could never give it the life it deserved.

    Fantastic! I grew up watching Out of Town. Mind you, what really struck a chord with me was watching the family who bought a puppy drive away off the estate 15:46 with virtually NO cars parked anywhere!! Reminded me of my estate where I grew up, playing football and having go cart racing with my mates on deserted roads and pavements :-)

    • @freeganjustin6699
      @freeganjustin6699 4 роки тому +3

      And they had nearly as many cars then as now. Just kept them off the road when not in use, often in garages. And each didn't do as many miles as today either. Sadly, there were 4 times as many fatalities on the roads each year compared to today, so some things have improved.

  • @PurityVendetta

    Still very interesting and informative. I have had dogs all my life and grew up with them and I still enjoyed and learned a couple of things watching this.
    One dog, my Bess, I adopted when she was around a year old and she lived until she was 19 years old. We knew each other so well we barely had to exchange a work for her to know what it was I wanted her to do and I knew instinctively what she needed from me.
    One thing, I believe dogs should always live with others of their own kind too. I have three at the present time. It's excellent for their socialisation and helps in creating a hierarchy for the home.
    For me, no home is complete without a dog.

    Dogs had a much better life back in the day. I remember in the 1960s, my Nan's dog would disappear after his breakfast and not return until his tea-time. Sometimes we'd see him running in his pack when we were playing at the park half a mile away. No adults with us of course, because kids had a better life then as well!

    If only people got their dogs by giving it so much consideration. Nowadays they choose a dog based on what it looks like, then phoning to see who has a pup for sale. No research, no considering if they can give it what it needs or whether it's the right breed for their lifestyle.

    When i was growing up in the 70's i remember how many dogs lives were very different in the ways they are now. Many got kicked onto the streets in mornings and would wander miles, there were always dogs that would just bite you. A lot of them didnt get fed dog cans they got what families ate or left over. again many didnt ever get vaccines and died from diseases like Distemper and never got to see vets, or flea or worm treatments. they were just there. Dogs get much more consideration now and their welfare is considered by owners and im glad that life has improved for them. Many dogs got pregnant when on their travels and you never knew what breed the pups would be..there were always mongrel pups for sale (poor things), many didnt get cared for properly as they werent appreciated. you could walk into a rescue and buy/adopt a dog cheaply without any forth and many were taken back again soon after. Or some people would just take the dogs to be put to sleep if they were fed up with them. There have been lots of improvements for dogs through the decades and im very glad of that.

    • @seamusoflatcap
      @seamusoflatcap 2 роки тому +4

      The dog we had when I grew up was fed mainly scraps topped up with canned dog food, and it was fine. Dogs, after all, are omnivorous scavengers.
      I now have a cocker spaniel and buying dog food can be confusing given the massive range of brands, wet/dry food, chews, treats, toys etc. There's even a brand that claims to produce breed specific food. I wonder, if I fed my spaniel food supposedly for a French bulldog, would he suddenly start barking in a different accent and would he become all philosophical? Usually he just sits and licks his bits. A lot.
      I take your point about how some dogs aren't properly cared for, then and now, and it's disgraceful. We now have the opposite extreme with anthropomorphism - calling dogs fur babies etc. It makes the owner look stupid and is unfair to the dog; let it be a dog.

    How informative for those who were about to become dog owners, it would have done equally well for some parents and still would benefit many , however in the modern day all of this common learnt sense is not PC,which we all witness daily both in dogs ,owners,children and parents or vice versa as is your experience! I am sure JH may have had a more Edwardian handle on all this ,and indeed this may have been a soft delivery for the the time,but is all real stuff,from an experienced pedestrian of life. R.I.P Jack your kind we could so with today!

    • @rustyhowe3907
      @rustyhowe3907 Рік тому +1

      Interesting you mentioned an Edwardian handle on things and this video being a softer shown side, to my observations such an initially strict start up can easily settle down into a soft gentler side simply because the ground rules are laid out from the beginning and now there'd be no need to keep up the stricter performance because a short "no" is enough.
      No has been given its meaning at that point, pity the PC brigade ruined it as you alluded to.

    I really think there is some kind of dog re-incarnation thing going on and is passed down through the generations. I think the dog at the end of life just hands back its personality to the universe or whatever it is to be reused. We humans are around through several canine life-cycles and I have seen re-cycled dog personality reappear.
